Built my gaming pc after 15 years of gaming laptops exclusively, blown away... Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:25 AM PDT So for the last 15 years, I have been gaming on "gaming" laptops as my job had me all over the place. Now I have a job where I stay there for my shift, then come home. I finally decided to build a dedicated gaming pc and I am blown away by how things have come along in the last 15 years compared to my experience on laptops. Ryzen 5 2600 16gb 3000mhz ram (2x8 in dual channel) 1tb Intel M2 ssd GTX 1080ti GPU I splurged and bought the Asus ROG Swift PG279QZ I am super impressed by this beast. It runs flawlessly, and to me, super quick and responsive. I score 21,094 in Firestrike, and 9,044 in Time Spy. I was worried a bit by the CPU bottlenecking, but honestly I love it and it runs 1440p gaming superb. Keep in mind, I come from laptops and I have always had to fight with throttling and thermal temps that would melt my legs. This this is a whole new world. (and big price tags) And then there is the whole 60 vsync jump to 144 Gsync. Its like going from console to pc again. I had no idea what 144hz gaming was like until now. I want to play every game I have loved from the last 15 years again just to experience it again in 144hz gsync glory. Thanks to everyone who contributes to these communities giving advice, deals, and compatibility information for all of us. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:35 PM PDT From what Im looking at here, it appears that the i5 is the way to go, right? I am not too familiar with threads or what that even means, I am most looking for a computer that will look cool and help me do my QA and moderated prototype studies as well as run Chrome for various sites I need for Work From Home shifts. I'd still like the best deal. From what I remember the threads are irrelevant unless the software can take advantage of it right? Am I wrong about thread counts? Is 10 more threads and 2 more cores (Ryzen 7) that much better than what the i5 has? If it doesn't make a difference now will it make one in the future when more software supports the advantages the Ryzen has? Also the i5 has onboard graphics so I could skip a GPU for now and purchase a good one in a month or two, Ryzen does not, is that correct? I had everything picked out but now I'm worried I may be screwing myself. [link] [comments]
Is it just me or is the force required during certain installations uncomfortably high. Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:21 PM PDT Best examples would be: push down ram modules, plugging/unplugging 24 pins, the latch on the wraith prism... Im no stranger to PC building but seeing the mobo bend under the force being applied just seems wrong on so many levels, even though i know it's capable of handling it. What parts/tool will I need to successfully take my PC from USA to Thailand? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 07:34 AM PDT Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, wasn't sure what sub to post this in. I'm moving to Bangkok in a month and I'm wondering what is the best way to bring my PC. I'm assuming its to take the whole thing a part and ditch the case. Should I put everything into a carry on bag (most likely going to be my backpack), or are there some components I should put in checked luggage? I would like to buy a Pelican case or something heavy duty but those are so expensive for something I'll only use a handful of times. Which components would require static bags? Will TSA make me take every part out to get x-rayed? Maybe I should just sell it and buy a new PC over there? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:16 PM PDT Obviously in a perfect world I'd get the 3600 and the 1660 ti but I'm looking to save a bit. Which combination would see the most improvement in FPS on 1080p 75hz? [link] [comments]

Changed bios settings now pc won't boot Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:56 AM PDT Troubleshooting Help:What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.
Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. I tried to change some settings in the BIOS (Set D.O.C.P standard, and a few voltages) in line with guides online, got stuck in a boot loop so I safe booted and loaded optimised defaults. Now no boot drives show up in the boot menu (They show up in other areas of the bios) and every time I boot it just boots back into the BIOS. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I have tried: Disabling fast boot, Updating to the latest BIOS, played with a few other boot related settings, CMOS reset. Nothing has changed. :( [link] [comments]
Get gaming PC now or half year later? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:28 PM PDT I have a fairly old PC that has served me well for almost a decade but sadly it seems to have exhausted its potential. I am eagerly waiting for the new wave of games, specifically: Cyberpunk, KSP 2, Doom Eternal, Subnautica Below Zero and probably more stuff that I am forgetting. I am debating between getting the new machine now or getting it sometime in December-January. What would you do? Do these several months make a significant enough difference in terms of value/money? It's build day as long as parts arrive on time, what do I need to remember? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 09:18 AM PDT I'm swapping out my CPU motherboard and RAM today. I haven't actually done any major computer stuff since the 90s. I know I want to avoid static and take some snapshots of connections. I've already made my windows install media with the media creation tool. I'm expecting about 30 minutes of hardware installation time and a few hours reinstalling windows and other software. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:02 PM PDT Is it possible to allow 2 people to play games in their own instances using the same computer? I would use 2 monitors,2 keyboards, 2 mouses and 2 Bluetooth headphones. [link] [comments]
My Friends PC keeps Crashing in-game Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT After I suggested what parts for him to get and he put it together there has been many issues -Firstly he began to have blue screens during game so he reset his pc -This was probably a ram issue since when i helped him select an xmp profile and manually set to frequency to its rated speed they stopped however his reseting of the computer did seem to make them less frequent in the first place -Now his pc crashes but unlike normal crashes there is no display what so ever on his monitor and the lighting of his keyboard and mouse goes off but his computer stays the same -He bought a Evga 700 br and more fans but this didnt solve the issue SPECS: Ryzen 5 2400G Asrock HDV B450M Corsair Vengeance 2x8gb 3000mhz ram Seagate 500gb 7200rpm hdd 120gb Kingston M.2 Cit Seven case [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 10:57 AM PDT I have had a watercooling issue twice in the past. One was a leak that caused an overheat (no water left) and a ruined video card (oxidized because of a slow leak). This was over time > 1 year, I'm not sure if it was an installation issue or a materials issue. Because of this I lean towards air cool rather than water ... it's been about 3 years since I last upgraded my rig. Is water cooling worth it or can I get by with air? I'm looking at a i9 9900 and I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble and worry. I will not be OC'ing. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:54 PM PDT After months of Youtube and creeping this sub I finally finshed my first build. Here is my parts list now all thats left is new peripherals! Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:07 PM PDT Hello Reddit-brothers, i am looking to upgrade my PC to some degree this year. Bought it last year with the following parts:
-- That was what i started with. Now upgrading with the following parts:
Prices here: https://imgur.com/a/AREXdTc -- also gonna replace the GPU with the next Nvidia Gen, if that is not too shabby. my SSD is also getting replaced by a nVME from Samsung one day. probably gonna switch to a Dark Rock Pro 4 Air cooler, most people tell me to not go for AIO Watercooling. Did i do a mistake with the upgrade parts? I can still send them back. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Sold a functioning motherboard. Buyer is now saying it is dead. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:02 PM PDT Not sure if this is the correct place to post. I pieced out my old PC. I sold my X58 (1366) Motherboard on CL. I was selling the board with the i7-920 CPU. The buyer didn't want the the CPU so I knocked $10 off. I was using the PC up to 2 days before selling it. I cleared the CMOS, put on a anti-static strap took everything apart ran some compressed air across it and stuck it in an anti-static bag. I met the guy did the exchange and everything was quiet for 2 weeks. Today I got an email from him through my other CL posting saying that the motherboard is dead. His email said its not working, he took it to a computer repair place and it tested not working. I responded with: Not working as in totally dead? No bios or anything? It was a fully functioning board. What processor and ram is being put into it? (I asked because he said he was going to stick a Xeon into it. I told him the board supports some 1366 Xeon's not Westmeres since it doesn't have the jumper and he said hes done this tons of time. His response was that the computer shop tested it and it was totally non functional. They tested it with multiple i7, memory, and video and its not working with anything. My second response: Is it showing power, post codes, beeps? There is a post code indicator on it. I've used this board for 9 years and he was made aware of it. I've never had a single issue with the board and I was using it just 2 days before. I've had an IT career for the last decade so none of this is uncommon to me and things happen. I've installed, pulled, cpus, boards, memory more than I can think of. It was sold as is, and I handed him a well taken care of working board. I don't feel guilty about that, but I also believe in karma. I'm not sure what route to take. Do I give him money back and take back a board that is now broken? That board has a lifetime warranty SKU that I registered so I can get it replaced with a bunch of leg work and some shipping cost, but is it worth it? Has anyone else been in this boat? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:30 PM PDT Hello, I am currently looking to buy a new monitor to go with GTX 1060 + i5 8600k Budget is 200 - 300 USD Specs I am looking for: 1920 x 1080 24" non-curved 144 Hz good text quality (sharpness…) I've seen a lot of people recommend ViewSonic XG2401, but I'd like to hear some more opinions. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
AMD RYZEN 5 3600X ($318) vs RYZEN 7 2700X 8 ($333) vs RYZEN 7 3700X ($435) vs RYZEN 7 3800X ($555) Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:28 PM PDT So I guess it would easily be the 3600x over the 2700x, right? But what about the 3700x, would it be worth it the $120 more? And if that the case would the 3800x be worth it the $237 more? Note: The prices are in USD but I'm not in the States, that's why everything is more expensive. [link] [comments]
Best way to recycle SSD for new computer Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:26 PM PDT So I'm building a new PC and I plan to recycle some components from my old PC, mainly the power unit, RAM, and SSD. The SSD is a Samsung 860 1TB, and I want to know the best way that I can safely implement it into my new computer. I don't need to keep everything on it as all of my stuff is recoverable, so wiping is an option, I just don't which is better or how to do either of them. All suggestions are appreciated. To all of you posting Ryzen 3000 + B450 Mobo builds, are you facing problems? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:15 AM PDT I'm planning to go red team for a budget 1440p system (Ryzen 3600 + B450 + 5700) but I'm a bit scared after all the launch problems. Have the new BIOS versions solve everytthing? I'm aware of those B450 MAX, but they haven't been released on my country and on top of that I wanted to have a wifi mb (Carbon AC) which seems to be discarded for a MAX version. On a side note, are the 5700 drivers stable by now? I've read that they are a bit problematic... Thanks! [link] [comments]
PSU/Case panel cables connectors Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:34 PM PDT Hello everyone, This my first pc build and I want to understand everything before connecting frontpanel/psu cables to motherboard. Because I was thinking the SSD 2.5 needs only SATA6 cable to motherboard and all done, but recently I found out is that it needs SATA cable to power supply? So yeah I want to be in safe side. On PSU afaik there are 3 connectors can't go wrong with them because they're unique which they for: - Motherboard - CPU - GPU And then there are SATA connectors to provide power to other parts of the pc, which mine are:
As for case panel connectors are straight fowrard and the labeling is great Are there anything I'm missing? Or any tips? Thanks! [link] [comments]

A friend needs help with which parts of his pc to upgrade Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:57 PM PDT ____________________________________________________________________ Specs CPU: i5-6600k @ 3.5Ghz GPU: Nvidia Geforce 1070 8gb Ram: 2 x Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 4 gb @ 2133 Mhz Motherboard: MSI Z170A-S02 PSU: Fractal Design Effekt 600W ____________________________________________________________________ The problem that my friend has described to me is basically random spikes of low performance during gaming, especially while entering larger cities in games like BDO or playing Apex: Legends. He has noticed that his CPU spikes up to 100% during these ''low performance spikes'' and stays there for longer periods of time. I've myself recommended that he upgrades his CPU to something like a i5-9500F or 9600K and also getting 16gb of ram, and maybe even a motherboard upgrade as there might be compatibility issues with his current one, have not looked into that yet though. But the thing is that I'm unsure if these purchases are actually necessary upgrades or upgrades at all, as I'm far from a professional nor have any extensive knowledge in computer parts. So any input or help would be greatly appreciated by me and my friend. I'll gladly provide any extra information asked for, and I'm sorry if I have left out anything blatantly important. Hopefully I'm not violating any r/buildapc rules! [link] [comments]
About to build a PC, need advice on how to swap my old ssd to the new motherboard. Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:44 PM PDT Old Evo ssd to a new Asus prime Mobo. Added 2x Drives in RAID 1 - Should They Turn Off When Inactive? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:02 PM PDT I've added 2x 4TB 2.5" Seagate Barracuda HDDs to my system this week. They are set-up in RAID 1 with AMD RAIDXpert2 and working find. I was wondering if they should be totally shutting off when they are inactive? Because if I feel them they are always spinning to some degree. Not full power spin, but not no spin. Windows, Programs, Games, etc are on a m.2 NVMe, and the new drives are just for storage of photos / videos / work data. So even when the PC is in use, they may not get accessed for days or weeks at a time. I have my windows power settings set to turn off inactive drives after 10 minutes, but does this only apply to your main OS drive, or additional drives and RAID too? nVIDIA Quadro P5000 vs 3GB GTX 1060 for gaming? Posted: 29 Aug 2019 11:40 AM PDT I have the opportunity to grab a $3,500 16GB GDDRX5 P5000 for basically nothing (essentially a trade for a 3GB GTX 1060.) However, I'm under the impression that the P5000 is built for video editing and not for gaming. Would gaming performance suffer? I compared the specs of the two cards and it seems like the P5000 is at least 50% better than the 1060 in every single field but I wanted to check with you guys first. [link] [comments] |
