    Simple Questions - August 17, 2019

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I created a PC Building app for iOS and Android devices

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:30 AM PDT

Edit: PM me or post on /r/BuildCores if you want a part added or other request. It's a bit hard to see them in this thread.

Edit 2: Thanks for all the part requests. I'll try to add them later today or tomorrow! Some of you mentioned that I should add an in-app dialogue that allows users to automatically add parts to the database. I'll look into it.

I posted here back in January when I released BuildCores, a mobile app for building your own PC. It wasn't just my first ever app, it was also my first attempt at a serious programming project. I received a lot of feedback over the past 7 months, and I wanted to share the progress of the app. It's still work-in-progress, mostly with the Android version, but here it is.

    Apple App Store

    Google Play Store

The app lets you choose PC parts and add them to an unlimited amount of custom builds. These builds are stored locally on your device and you could save as many as you want. In essence, it is like PCPartPicker but I want to try to differentiate BuildCores with features that embrace the mobile ecosystem.

    Some additional features include:

    • Offline support (everything can be accessed offline besides images, pricing, etc.)
    • CPU and GPU benchmarks in a scrollable bar chart.
    • Automatic builds if you're a newcomer (not on Android yet).
    • Built-in compatibility filter that you can enable (needs some improvement on Android).

The main request was releasing an Android version of BuildCores, which I initially released 2 weeks ago. I completely rebuilt the app with Google's Flutter framework and Material Design, while the existing iOS version is built with native Swift and UIKit. While it is possible to transfer the iOS version to the same Flutter codebase of the Android version, I really enjoy Swift development and the entire community at /r/iOSProgramming (plus I might want to get an internship/job with it).

If you are pretty experienced with PC building, you might notice some limitations with this app. I don't think BuildCores is perfect. It needs some work but I am dedicated in growing my skills as try to build new features.

I hope you enjoy it and if you have any feature requests, bugs, criticism, or anything else, I am always listening!

recommendations on best bang for buck 1440p 144hz monitor (hdr if possible?)

switching from console and coming from a 4k hdr tv, it'd be nice to keep the hdr. but they usually charge an extra arm.

    9900k temps

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 11:51 AM PDT

    Hello!

I decided to remove my fan splitters and plug fans directly into the motherboard.Temps changed from 40-45 to 55-60c after the change.

Checked that everything is plugged/working etc and even increased profile from silent > perfomance but temps stay around 60c.

Is this some kind of monitoring bug?Any ideas?

    First Build

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:32 AM PDT

I'm doing my first ever build by myself and I spend the whole last two weeks trying to perfect it to my budget (1200€).

Im gonna put the SSD and HDD from the old computer that I have now on this new build but only temporarily, I plan on buying a M.2 NVMe on the future.

I would like to know if these parts are good for gaming and if anyone has any recommendations of pc parts for me

    Can't decide between 2070 super or 5700xt

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:24 PM PDT

So I've been looking into building a pc for a while now and I finally can but I've had a hard time deciding between parts I saw some videos about the new red devil 5700xt and wasn't sure if it would be worth switching my gpu on this build for that and upgrading my processor or cooler. I have a roughly $1650 budget and want to use my pc for mostly gaming as well as school work. I'm really hyped for borderlands 3 and can't wait to play it and I want this pc to be able to run it the best it possibly can but I know borderlands 3 benefits from amd hardware but am not sure if the 5700xt would just be a better investment for all games in general. Thanks!

Hey, I just built my first pc. So far it's all working fine, but some airgoo rgb Strips I got aren't working even though I'm putting them in compatible rgb headers. What am I doing wrong?

My motherboard is a Asrock b450 Steel Legend btw.

580 vs vega 56 vs 1070 (maybe ti)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 12:18 PM PDT

So I am finishing up my build and as it stands I am trying to decide on a gpu to put into the rig. I basically play Minecraft, league, maybe some WoW, but not anything you would consider super heavy (besides heavily modded minecraft). I am trying to decide if I should go with a used 580 for ~$100, a Vega 56 at ~$200, or the 1070/1070 ti between $200 and $250. My upper limit is $250 and I'll be buying used. I don't have a 144hz monitor and I'm not looking to push 4k or even 1440. Is it worth it to spend the extra $100 to "futureproof"?

I'm building this PC for productivity and some gaming (Target is 1080p, high refresh rate and low response time.) I just wanted to post it here and see if I did a good job picking parts. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated! Thanks!

I'll go over my thought process for picking each component:

CPU - going with this over the 3700x because I like the benefit in things like running VMs, compressing files, rendering etc.

MOBO - mainly just for out of box compatibility tbh.

Memory - want 32gb, wasn't sure if I should get 16x2 or 8x4? Went with 3200 because I heard performance doesn't go up significantly above that.

SSD - basically went with one close to 1TB. I'll buy larger storage in the future.

GPU - Cooling and noise seemed to have gotten better with this custom 5700 XT card, and from what I read it should handle 1080p 144 fps in the games I will be playing.

Case - didn't spend much time thinking about this. Was recommended.

PSU - not sure about this. Went with ~200 watts headroom because I heard the CPU and GPU are power hungry.

Anyways, thanks for looking and hope I did alright! :D

Computer starting to feel a bit dated when it comes to new games, where to go from GTX 1070?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:02 PM PDT

Not the best with computer parts and building. I have a friend who helps me with the hardware but he isn't too familiar with newer parts. I am looking to go forward from my 1070 as I find myself not running games quite as well as I would like. I am wondering if it is more my i5 6600k slowing me down or the 1070 itself. Thank you.

Where did all the GPU's go?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 11:18 AM PDT

Last time I wanted to build a PC the 1070ti was the newest card for around $450. But I kind of lost interest but now that I'm looking into it all of the GPU's arent for sale anymore. I have no idea what the 1660, 2060, etc. are. Can someone bring me up to speed on what the current lineup of GPU's are?

Ryzen 3600 build frequent random resets.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:14 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Recently built a pc with the following spec:
    *Ryzen 3600
    *Palit gamingpro oc RTX 2080
    *MSI B450 tomahawk
    *Corsair LPX 16GB @3200
*Motherboard, CPU, cooler and RAM came as a pre-flashed, pre-installed bundle.

So I can run the ram at rated speed of 3200 and have carried out Karhu ram test (I stopped it as it went above 7,600%) and Memtest 86. No errors, it's all stable.

Windows install and all the initial set-up for the PC was a breeze.

However, the pc instantly reboots randomly. No BSOD, just brief periods of black screen, then it posts and loads back into windows immediately again.

I have run the relevant Sfc/scan commands, disabled precision boost in BIOS and as I said earlier the ram seems completely compatible and stable.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to solve it?

Or is it just an issue with the 3,000 series chips and B450 Tomahawk?

    What should I do?

    What's a worthwhile upgrade from a 1070?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:03 PM PDT

Hey guys, I haven't been keeping up to date with hardware since I bought my 1070.

I'm running a 144hz 2560x1440 monitor and some of the games I play are starting to drop below 100 frames at certain times and I'm not happy about it.

I'm looking at around a $600 or so budget for an upgrade, I run most of my games on low/medium, especially ones I play "competitively".

I'm not against switching to AMD, as I have seen some good things from them lately, I've been looking at some cards here and there trying to get a feel for what's out there but I don't have a lot of time to do deep digging at the moment and figured I'd ask you guys.

    Thanks in advance!

The white VGA debug light is on on my motherboard although there doesn's seem to be any problem. Could this be a bug?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:01 PM PDT

I have the Asus Tuf X570 Wi-Fi and every once and a while, after turning on the pc, the white vga light will turn on. The display comes up fine and I can play games fine as well. Userbenchmark test was also good too. After a restart the white VGA light goes off. It happened a few weeks ago and just happened again today. Should I be worried about this or not. My GPU is a B Stock EVGA RTX 2070.

Can I reuse my Corsair SP LED Lighting Controller with newer Corsair HD RGB fans?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 04:00 PM PDT

My system is a couple years old and my LED SP120 fans are starting to rattle, looking at replacing them with RGB HD120 fans. Can I re-use my existing 6-port SP controller in my machine? I dont need to buy a new controller right? I can just buy new fans and plug them into the ports in the existing hub/controller?

Do NOT Use Driver Booster With Ryzen!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:58 PM PDT

Hello all, I am making this post to make others aware of the terrible ordeal I have had this past week regarding my system randomly stuttering and buzzing (that of a BSOD) for around half a second every 30 - 90 minutes, first of all if you want to use Driver Booster with Ryzen, you can just be CAREFUL with what you allow it to update and check if it's going to change the driver to a completely different one first! So here's the story in Balamory, in Driver Booster once your scan is complete if you have a Ryzen processor (3rd gen for sure, not sure about 2nd, etc but most likely it will be the same) it will have 2 updates for 'Standard SATA AHCI Controller', DO NOT 'UPDATE' THESE DRIVERS! It will NOT update them, instead CHANGE them to 'AMD SATA Controller' this driver is NOT supported on Windows 10 and can ONLY be used on Windows 8.1 and BELOW, even then I still wouldn't use them, if you install these on Windows 10 it will most likely cause random BSOD like stutters, if you have fallen victim of this all you have to do is go to your Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and then UNINSTALL the 'AMD SATA Controller' and make sure you tick the box to uninstall any additional crap it came with! Restart your PC and Windows will automatically download the actual drivers you're meant to use. This will solve the stutters. Hope this helps.

I hate summer. What is the best cooling option for my computer?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:43 PM PDT

    For reference:

    - Ryzen 5 2600 w/ cooler stock and some shitty thermal paste that i don't really remember the brand (Looked cheap tho)

    - Open case (I will get one this year, I'm still thinking wich one i should get in my budget range...)

    - No other fan besides the cpu cooler and my GTX 1060 6Gb fans. (GPU Does not go above the danger zone, for now at least)

Since the start of the big temps here in Europe my computer has been skyrocketing on the cpu tems, I know, I have a shitty setup, but for now is what i have.

I usually tweaked a bit the cpu freq, and voltage but nothing special. Well... now i NEED to undervolt it or else it gets over 80oC and ends up shutting down after getting to 90. (Celsius)

Today i was trying to stream and well, it hit the 90's.

What should be my Number 1 Priority upgrade on the cooling side of the stuff?

First time building, won't power on, desperate for help

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:52 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I've spent the past 24 hours building my first PC and unfortunately it's been a very frustrating experience. Last night I finished the build but the PC would not stay powered on. It would stay on for about 15 seconds before powering off and then on again. I replaced the PSU but the issue still persisted, so I went back out and replaced the CPU and motherboard.

I replaced the CPU and motherboard, hooked the computer back together, and now it won't power on at all. And I'm completely lost. I undid and redid the wiring 3 times and it still won't power on. I tried powering on with only the CPU but still nothing worked. I don't know if there's a short or what. I was hoping for some pointers to help me solve this issue. Here are some pictures of the build, not sure if they're helpful at all:

    Boot issues with my build

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:50 PM PDT

Specs: Asus ROG Strix B450-i Gaming motherboard, Gigabyte 6GB GTX 1660, Ryzen 5 2600, Corsair Vengeance PRO 2x 8 GB 3200mhz RAM, Corsair CS550M Power Supply

Yesterday I moved back to my sorority house at my university and brought my PC along, it transported fine in the box for the case with a blanket underneath as a shock absorber. Booted fine yesterday, even shut it down once in between. Then today when I got home at the end of the day, went to turn it on and the yellow-green "boot" indicator light on the motherboard was lit and the PC was stuck on the ASUS ROG screen with the prompt to boot into the BIOS. Yesterday I was doing some tinkering and I changed the setting for the RAM to 3000mhz since it was on auto and running lower than it is rated for, so I thought this might be the problem and entered the BIOS and set it back to auto. Another restart didn't fix it, but shutting down, unplugging and plugging back in, then turning back on worked and now it seems fine. No indicators on the MB.

What I'm wondering is, should I be concerned? Or was it likely a RAM issue, and I should just leave it on auto to prevent future issues? Would it be worth opening up my case and reseating my RAM (would really rather not do this since I'm away from home now and have less space to do so) just to be sure?

5400rpm WD drive or 7200rpm Seagate drive?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:05 AM PDT

Titles says it all. I have both a 2tb 5400rpm WD drive and a 7200rpm Seagate drive for the same price. I've heard 7200rpm drives are 33% faster than 5400rpm and the main reason I'm upgrading is for speed. I've also heard Seagate is unreliable. What move should I make here?

PS. The Seagate drive has a 2 year limited parts warranty on it

Upgrading from i7-490k to current Ryzen Gen

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 01:09 PM PDT

I currently have a build with an i7-4790k on a LOCKED micro ATX board (yes I screwed up when buying the mobo) and 32 gb of 1600 G-Skill DDR3 memory, planning to upgrade and I figured for now I would only need to buy a micro-atx mobo that's compatible with the ryzen chip and DDR4 memory as well, however I'm not sure if it's worth going down from 32 gb of ram to 16 gb and also wondering how does Ryzen 5 3600 fares against my current processor.

My budget is around $500 but I'm willing to go more if necessary. I already have everything else (PSU 750W, GTX 1070, 3tb HDD and 512 gb ssd)

I mostly use my pc for gaming and multi tasking on chrome, while I'm a software developer I mostly use works computer for that, so I wouldn't take that into consideration.

Need help finding cases similar to the NZXT h500.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:19 PM PDT

They are out of stock literally everywhere, and I'm planning on buying the rest of my parts by tomorrow. The reason why I liked the h500 was because of how clean and simple it looked along with how easy it is to manage cables along with good airflow. What are some cases that are similar if not better than the h500 in those aspects. Willing to spend $90.
