    Simple Questions - August 09, 2019

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

REMINDER Twist a cpu cooler off rather then pull to avoid damaging the cpu like I did whilst doing my first rebuild

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:59 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of rebuild/restoration videos on youtube and thought I'd give it a go as they are meant definitely the best 'bang per buck'. However my inexperience shows when I rip the CPU out of the socket when removing the heat sync, as seen below.

    GIF or the moment https://i.imgur.com/qiULvmp.gifv

Video (3:30 is the time of the offence) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqYHermFfzw

Edit: As many have correctly pointed out heating the CPU up with some synthetic load before is an infinity better solution to this problem!

PLEASE include your monitors refresh rate and resolution when asking CPU/GPU questions!!!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:43 AM PDT

People! Please Please PLEASE tell us what framerate and resolution your monitor is when you're asking about part upgrades (or what you plan on upgrading to down the road). It makes it much easier to recommend something when we know your use for it.

BEWARE NZXT H700: The top and front panel are held by very tightly fit PLASTIC pins that break off easily

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:57 AM PDT

It may sound a bit stupid to most, but I think this is an important information for first time PC builders, or at least people new to NZXT Cases.

So, to remove the top panel of the NZXT H700 cases(install top fans or radiator), you first need to remove the front panel, you have to do that by grabbing the bottom of it and just pulling it, while praying that the goddamn plastic pins don't break. After that, you can remove the top panel the same, pull at the front upwards, BUT here be very-very careful, as the top panel is held by 12 Plastic pins and they ones at the back can very easily break off(Source: learnt the hard way). Just really, be very careful, don't be too aggresive with it, don't be aggressive at all.

Wanted to get this out, because the wonderful guide coming with the case only shows a simple arrow as to where you need to pull it, nothing else. Got one pin broke off at the top panel exactly because of this, and I wasn't even trying too hard with the pulling, shame on NZXT for using plastic here, shame on me for trying too hard(?).

My 1440p $267 (including monitor) pc build

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:07 PM PDT

So with the release of WoW classic coming soon, I wanted to give it a try, but only had a high power workstation laptop. Since I wasn't too convinced I'd be playing it for too long, I decided to put together the cheapest PC possible that I thought could run a mid-low tier game at 60 FPS in full HD. I started searching around and this ended up becoming more of a personal challenge than an actual budget build. In hindsight, my time spent searching for deals wasn't worth the savings. All prices below are including shipping if necessary.

    Part Price Source
    Athlon x4 950 (OC to 4.2ghz) AM4 $25 /r hardwareswap
    Sapphire Rx480 armor $70 Ebay
Asrock B350 Fatality Gaming K4 (Included Wraith Spire) $50 /r hardwareswap
    Kingston M.2 128 GB SSD $14 Ebay
Antec True Power Classic 750w 80+ Gold $35 /r hardwareswap
Seagate 1TB SSHD Actually had this one in an old closet
Hyperx Fury 16gb DDR4 2133 (Can't get this to overclock for the life of me) $25 /r hardwareswap
    TP-Link Archer T2UH 600mb/s Wifi card + Thermal Paste $8 /r hardwareswap
    Asus pb278q, 27" 1440p, up to 75hz $40 (scratched) Offerup

I ended up putting this in an old HP micro-ATX case, which required some fab work since my motherboard was full ATX.

Overall I got pretty decent deals on everything, if you're faster there are definitely better deals to be had. It would have probably been worth the money to bump up to a Ryzen 1200, and I may have been able to get a cheaper Mobo that included Wifi, but I went with this as it supported Ryzen 3rd gen in the future. I also got lucky in that every item worked as intended.

I haven't tried too many things on it yet, but Skyrim SE in 1440p maxed out still returns ~60 fps (in a short bit of gameplay, just a rough estimate, didn't average out the frames). League of Legends TFT in 1440 maxed out returns ~80 FPS, I can update with benchmarks if anyone cares

TLDR: Used parts build a very cheap PC

Did I waste my money on a Samsung 970 Pro 1TB? Should I have gotten an Evo Plus or an Intel 660P instead?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 08:44 AM PDT

I recently built my gaming PC and usually I tend to spend a bit extra but keep it for 8+ years without upgrading parts (except the GPU) - so by not doing an extensive research I just went for one of the fastest and most durable M.2 NVMe drives, I thought this was the right thing to do so I spent $315 on it.

However when I built my system, everyone keeps telling me that I wasted my money and I won't even benefit from the speed and durability of this SSD and how I should have chosen an Evo Plus or an Intel 660P instead - which is the best value for money apparently.

So what do you guys think, did I waste my money on something I don't really need or I shouldn't worry too much about it?

I just built my first PC and saved up for a long time

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:02 AM PDT

So I saved up my pocket money for like 3 years and build my first gaming PC.

I am 13 so I just entered the pc master-race.

    Specs:

    H81 pro Asrock motherboard

GTX 1060 6GB OC (it was a GTX 660ti when I first built it for budget reasons)

    16GB DDR3 RAM

    500GB SSD from Seagate

    2TB HDD

    I5 4460

$40 case with some RGB and a window and red fans

    500w Corsair PSU

Games: Satisfactory, BeamNG, Automation, Scrap Mechanic, Besiege, City Skylines and some other stuff.

On a Iiyama black hawk monitor.

It's fast enough for what i do and i love the feeling of semi high fps gaming for the first time.

[Build Help] My graphics card kicked the bucket, and I'm realizing that I should just update my whole 2013 build when I replace it. Where the hell do I start?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:10 AM PDT

Hi friends! You helped me in 2013 to put together a solid gaming rig, and it's been smooth sailing until now. I'm back for more help, as this really isn't something I'm very proficient in. Can you give me some guidance on where to start for updating this build for 2019? Looking for something that will run Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra. Flexible budget.

Building a PC with $800 to my name.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

I'm 16 and unemployed, and all I have to my name is around $800 from working last fall. I've wanted to build a gaming pc for a while now, and finally decided to put some money into it.

I'm asking generally for two things: suggestions on equal but cheaper parts, and suggestions on cases that will fit.

    Specs:

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2600x

    GPU - Sapphire Radeon Nitro+ RX 590 8GB

    RAM - Patriot Viper (2 x 8GB)

    SSD - Samsung 860 QVO 1TB

    PSU - EVGA 550W 80 Plus (Non-Modular)

    MOBO - MSI Performance Gaming B450M PRO M2 Micro-ATX

This isn't considering keyboard, mouse, case, or monitor.

Thanks for all of your help, guys

I just want to tell you guys I'm pretty anxious for my first build

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:54 PM PDT

The parts started arriving yesterday. I bought them in different stores so they are arriving randomly at my house, and everyday I get more and more excited. I already have the case, PSU, RAM and HDD. I can't wait! It's my first build, any tips not to mess anything up?

I don't know which motherboard to buy for an i9

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:23 PM PDT

I've read too many negative reviews on 200-250$ motherboards arriving DOA to having bios issues. For example, one of the motherboards, you can't boot the windows or update the bios without updating the bios first. In order to update your bios, you have to install a professor that's compatible. I got scared after reading bunch of negative reviews with bios issues. My question would be what's a good motherboard you would pair with an i9? I definitely need m.2 slots and wifi.

    PSU compatibility check with build

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:11 PM PDT

Hey dudes. Below is the build for which I've got most of the parts already, minus the case, GPU, and PSU. I'm waiting for the AiB 5700 XT's coming out in a couple of weeks.

    Questions:

    • Is the PSU enough? 650W seems like it would be a comfortable minimum, but I don't have mind going for a 750W.

    • Do I need the extra 8pin for the MOBO? I'm going for an air-cooled system and I don't expect amazing OC results from the CPU, so I was planning on only using one 8pin

    • Of all the x570's, is the Aorus Master a wise choice? I don't mind the price, but if I'm missing something vital, I don't want to skimp.

    • Overall, how'd I do?

    Thanks guys!

re: "Wtf 64Gb of RAM is just a waste of $300" yes, probably, but I'm a lazy developer who leaves multiple IDEs open at all times, and I really, really don't want to worry about anything anymore after coming from a cramped system

AMD v Intel (latest chips for power work not gaming)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:20 PM PDT

So I work in computer forensics where we have a lot of processing of hard drives and phones going on. We have to decode 1000s of SQL databases or hash TBs of data, sometimes a couple at once on a single machine. We are in the process of spec'ing up some new rigs and currently unsure whether the i9 will be better or worse over the Ryzen 9 (possibly the 3950 when it's released in sept... (But appreciate there are no real world benchmarks for this yet)

Other specs will be whatever top end there is, 128GB DDR4, 2080 TI Graphics card, cooling etc etc. It's mainly the chips I'm focussed on though. I read everywhere the i9 is for gaming and the AMD for everything else.

Also, as a note, at present our current end of life PCs are twin Zeons, 128GB ram, 1070 cards. They are pretty good but showing their age.

I'm just looking for peoples thoughts and poss any build ideas (money is "almost" not an issue 🤣)

    Thanks.

Any obvious changes? 3k DDR4 and the unclockable Ryzen CPU shouldn't be a problem because this isn't an enthusiast build. I'm supplying him a GOLD PSU https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015YEI8JG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and 1070ti nvidia founders edition. Any obvious improvements or recommendations to keep the price around this range?

Could someone please recommend a powerful but quiet video card?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 07:48 AM PDT

    Price range is around $350-400ish.

This will be paired with a Ryzen 3600 CPU.

    My goals are:

    Low noise

    Excellent 1440p performance

    Raytracing would be nice

I don't want to have to upgrade it for four or five years (my typical cycle)

I don't care how it looks (RGB or whatever) I just want it to perform awesomely and very quietly.

    2080 ti caught fire

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 08:37 PM PDT

My 2080 ti AORUS waterforce caught fire only after hours of installation, I have warranty covered and all, so I'm not too worried, but the sheer fact that my graphics card caught on fire has me shook. It's going to be a hassle to replace since my mobo's damaged and I use a water loop. Any additional steps I should do? EDIT: imgur link https://imgur.com/EKS2UkL

    PSU, Memory, what? Stumped

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:09 AM PDT

I bought a new rackmount case and EVGA 650w Modular PSU for my FreeNAS implementation (which should have been plenty for my 8 spinning disks and one SSD boot). I powered it up once...and everything booted, all my pools where there. I then added the 5 remaining fans (I should note that I replaced my case because my old Norco case was poorly ventilated and the disk temps shot up to 56C when I added the 3 additional disks). Powered it up again, and nothing. The green LED shows power to the mobo, but the PSU fan doesn't spin, and the CPU fan doesn't spin. No error beeps as well.

I tried booting with my old 400w PSU...same issue. Power to the mobo (green LED on) but system does not post.

I thought I might have shorted out the mobo or CPU when moving stuff around to add the set of 3 fans, so I replaced both. I powered it on with the new mobo and CPU (minus the disks) just to see if it would post...and nothing.

The only thing I haven't replaced is the memory...and I'm stumped. If it was the memory, it would still boot but error on boot...but it would post...or am I off base here?

    Motherboard:

    ASRock C236 WSI

    CPU Intel I3-7350k

    16GB ECC memory

EDIT: I started over and found the issue. The power switch was broken. No matter how many times I pushed the button, it didn't work. I swapped it out and all is well. I guess I'll ship everything back.

    Ryzen 5 2600 + GTX 1660, Good combo?

So i live in the Netherlands, (no newegg or microcenter because of taxes, shipping and import fees.) I want to build my own PC soon when i have saved enough money, it is very budget oriented and right now i am thinking of a Ryzen 5 2600 paired with a GTX 1660. Over time PC build?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 04:20 PM PDT

I am looking into building my first and last gaming desktop here in the near future "18 months max" by buying the parts over time and sourcing the absolute best deals on items over this period of time. I could buy the items all at once but I'm enjoy items more if I get them under MSRP. Also I just bought a brand new Acer Predator 300 with the GTX 1060 6GB and this will get me by for now. I will be buying the CPU & GPU last and was thinking of the i9 9900k unless this changes in the future and a RTX 2080 TI for the GPU. I really am not a fan of the RTX cards especially compared to the GTX 1080 but how long will it be before Nvidia releases another GPU? I don't wanna buy the RTX ti and then 6 months later they come out with a new card. I just want to have 4K gaming as well as editing I will never go to 8K in the future. Thank you all for the time and I'm sorry if this is a pain to read.

TL&DR: Building a 4K Desktop by buying parts over time should I buy RTX TI or how long for new cards?
