    Simple Questions - August 06, 2019

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I'd Like to Acknowledge a Redditor

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:22 AM PDT

I can't post this in r/hardwareswap so i figured this would be the next best spot. About a month ago i sold some pc parts to u/killerabbit and everything went perfect. Last week i sold my GTX 1060 6GB to another redditor, however i got mixed up and put the wrong shipping label and mailed it to u/killerabbit. Called the post office and they weren't able to stop the shipment, re-route it, or even send it back to me. On a whim, i contacted kilerabbit and explained the issue and he/she was more than willing to help when they didn't need to. He/she quickly printed out a new shipping lable provided by me and mailed it out the next morning. IN a world full of people trying to get over on each other, i just wanted to publicly thank this person for helping me out because i could've been out a graphic card and the cash that was paid to me for it as i'd have to refund the purchase since this was totally my fault.

Building a multi-seat machine for work!

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 04:17 AM PDT

    Greetings!

I am looking to build a beast of a computer for work. I have experience building "normal" systems, but nothing on this scale. As I have been made responsible for putting this machine together I thought I would get some second opinions on the build before proceeding with this bad boy...

The OS will most likely be Arch Linux or Ubuntu. The machine is to be used for heavy computational task, such as CFD and numerical mathematics. The idea is to have one powerful computer and configure multi-seat so that 4 people can use the machine simultaneously for graphically intesive tasks such as CAD. To achieve this, the machine needs to support 4 Nvidia GPU's, hence my choice of CPU (for the number of PCIe lanes) and motherboard. In addition some users will login remotely over SSH / VNC / etc...

I have already tested the multi-seat configuration with 2x GPU's and keyboard / mice, and the setup is working supprisingly well even on low-end hardware. I do however not know how this would scale with the hardware proposed below at ~8 (4 local 4 remote?) simultanous users. As far as I can tell the parts support eachother, but i can of course be wrong -.-

    Additional points:

    • Some of the software we use require Nvidia graphics
    • We sadly do not have time to wait for TR3
    • We have access to a local NAS for mass storage
    • We currently use laptops from ~2013, so read 'graphically intensive' with a grain of salt

If you have any experience with putting these systems together, with or without the intended use-case, any input would be greatly appreciated :)

    Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Fg6Vr6
    (Nvidia 1660 x 4)

EDIT: Downgraded to 3000GHz memory, in accordance with motherboard specs.

I built my first PC in 17 years - Iron Man (Iron Gauntlet) Build

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:54 PM PDT

I've been a video editor for 15 years, this year. I've been a very happy Mac user for the majority of that time but given the inability to upgrade the new machines along with their super hefty price tags, I decided it was time to jump back to the world of Windows and build my own PC. After all, the Adobe and Avid apps I use for work are compatible and it's easier than ever to migrate projects back and forth between Windows and Mac versions of both apps. So at around the time I started to do my research into this new build, I saw Avengers Endgame and absolutely loved it. On a human level, I love Tony Stark's selfish to selfless character arc and as a filmmaker, I was blown away by how the writers (Marcus and McFeely) and the directors (the Russo Brothers) were able to weave 21 films worth of narrative into a cohesive and enjoyable story that gave us a great ending and also a new beginning. Nothing short of superhuman in effort.

I happened to have a little spare time this Summer and I'm a creative guy and I've been having just a bit of the "Fuck you Dad, I can do whatever I want!" syndrome against Apple's very strict eco system, so I decided to do a totally custom build and here's the album and story!

    https://imgur.com/a/80y0r46

EDIT: TL;DR - I felt extra creative and put a little extra elbow grease into my build to make this cool custom editing rig:

    https://imgur.com/a/u2AfuLY

    2ND EDIT FOR SPECS:

    -i9-9900KF -Asus Z390i Mobo

    -32GB DDR4 3000 RAM (2x 16GB)

-EVGA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 XC Black Edition

    -Corsair H80i v2 (with HD120 RGB Fans)

-Noctua 80mm PWM Fans at rear (x2)

    -Mushkin 512GB NVME M.2 2280 (2500 read/1500 write)

-HGST 7200 RPM Enterprise HDD 4TB (x 2 in RAID 0 configuration as media drive for footage)

-Corsair CX750M (Will likely replace with an ERP-compatible model)

-Corsair Lighting Node Pro controlling one Corsair Pro LED strip and both Corsair fan RGBs

What differences can we typically expect between the various upcoming RX 5700 XT cards?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:39 AM PDT

    XFX, Sapphire, and so on.

Is there ever much difference between them all, and what things should I look out for when choosing between them?

Are some of the third-party manufacturers typically better than the others?

My brother and I are both experiencing a "USB disconnect sound" issue on our new Ryzen builds

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:16 AM PDT

Every 10 to 50 seconds we hear the USB disconnect sound and have no idea what it is. Its getting frequent to the point of annoyance and Im just wondering if there's a way to fix it or if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

    Build is:

    Ryzen 3600

with same motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus x570 I (the mini itx variant)

Ram speed isnt important as we both have different speed kits and the problem still occurs

UPDATE: Bluetooth issue. To fix, either disable Bluetooth or run the troubleshooter.

I've been looking forward to building my first PC for awhile now. I would really appreciate it if you guys could look over my list and see anywhere I can save or upgrade for similar price (about $1800 budget). I'm looking for 1440p 144hz gaming. I know the least about motherboards and just picked one from Asus. If you have other suggestions that would be great! (I don't really care about RGB)

Also, I'm aware that i didn't include a monitor, I was gifted one from my dad.

WIFI has stopped working on my new build.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:45 PM PDT

Pretty much everything was working as it should apart from my RAM, so I restarted bios, and checked my bios settings. Didn't change anything as it all seemed fine.

When I logged into my computer again, I wasn't connected to the internet, and my sound had also stopped working.

I checked all the connections on my motherboard, and they all seem fine. I tried moving my WiFi adapter to a different slot but it didn't do anything.

My adapter does appear in device manager and I think driver is up to date.

I searched on my pc for internet connections, but there aren't any to choose from.

I've been tossing up building a computer for years, and a recent pay rise and upcoming sale has made me decide to pull the trigger finally. I'm looking at the $1000 to $1200 NZD mark.

    Heavy Minecraft modded PC

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:39 AM PDT

I'm thinking of eventually building or upgrading my PC so I can run minecraft shaders with mods and still get over 200fps on medium/high settings. Right now I have a PC that plays minecraft very well (most of the time 200-400fps highest settings, 2000+fps on lowest), even with 100+ mods i get at least 60fps on medium settings but cant really run shaders that well (between 20-60fps, most of the time 20-40), should i upgrade my old pc or build a new one? (I've never built a pc before, i got my current one as a gift on christmas cus my old one was dying (even though the processor was pretty good and all it needed was a graphics card)). I also want my PC to be able to run games like Fortnite and CS:GO at 40fps or higher, and all roblox games at high settings.

    Current PC:

Intel Xeon X5647 2.93GHz Stock (Turbo up to 3.20GHz which i literaly just found out about, i think intel turbo boost is turned off in bios)

NVidia Quadro 4000 2.0GB GDDR5 @ Base ClockUnknown 6x4GB DDR3-ecc (either 667mhz, 1066mhz, or 1333mhz, it shows something different depending on what tool i use to measure)

Unkown 2x1TB + 2x0GB HDDs (C drive is for OS, boot drive and minecraft (400GB+ used), D drive is for storing virtual hard disks (~100GB used? idk) 2x0GB cus 2 spare slots)

Dell Precision T5500 motherboard (this used to be a workstation PC but it runs games better than my old one with a 3rd gen i3 and integrated graphics)

Windows 7 SP1 (Previous owner (the one who gave me the PC) told me that he tried installing windows 10 but it wasnt letting him, have spare hardrive laying around with windows 10 preinstalled, wondering if plugging it in and booting from it will let me use windows 10)

Wont have access to it until September 2nd cause I'm on vacation.

My WiFi Card is causing many problems

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT

So while building my PC, I put in a Rosewill RNX-AC1900PCE card because Ethernet isn't exactly an option in my current situation. However I've been having a lot of trouble with it. The drivers seem to be cause my PC to freeze for several seconds, it keeps disconnecting from the WiFi and will sometime require a restart to connect again at all, and its not running very fast (a week ago I was pulling 600mb/s speed, now I'm consistently under 100). Now I have read that my specific card is known to stop working after 6 months, which is about as long as I've had it, so I think it might be an actual issue with the entirety of this product. If there is a way to fix it I would like to do that but otherwise I was hoping for some recommendations on WiFi cards that you guys trust. I haven't found one yet that doesn't have a bunch of terrible reviews saying its bad and/or doesn't work at all.

First PC build (PC parts from other builds thrown in to fit a budget).

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:29 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

I created a pcpp list by basically watching videos and looking at other peoples builds and shifting what parts I needed to make a strong gaming pc.

I intend to play AAA games, Skyrim with plenty texture/weather altering mods (ENBs) and causal web browsing, at high-ultra settings. Currently I'm aiming for 1080p 144hz because I'd rather not sacrifice quality of youtube videos I watch.

My budget is $1500 and I'm trying my best to keep it around or below that. I'm purchasing the parts in the US in a few weeks, unless there are things to look out for in the future. I'm here to ask if there are any changes that could make the build cheaper or even a difference part that could cause a great difference in the pc experience. I've tried myself to find cheaper parts but after reading the reviews of parts and how many people get malfunctioning versions of them, I just switched to what I had before.

I wanted my first build to be flashy, hence the RGB ram and fan coolers. Also don't really have the choice to use an ethernet cord, so I got a wifi card. Should I wait for the RX 5700 XT to have different versions and buy one of those? Should I remove the cpu cooler to use the stock fan, making more space for upgrades? Thanks for any suggestions and help :)

    new mobo is possessed/haunted?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:15 PM PDT

    https://gfycat.com/goodnaturedenchantedechidna

Hi, recently built a new PC with a lot of guidance from the r/buildapc here and I'm repeatedly encountering a strange problem. Parts are: 3700x on x570 GB Aorus pro wifi, 16GB 3200 CL16 Ballistix, 2070 super, RM750x PSU. This has happened since the very first POST and continues to happen intermittently.

In BIOS/UEFI, the mouse and keyboard react on their own. Mouse either moves all the way to right (right every time) or only intermittently responds -- suddenly stops then starts again.

KB is worse, random inputs changing values all over the BIOS and pressing arrow keys often doubles or triples the input, keeps scrolling back to same spot and is just generally a huge mess to navigate. I've changed the KB and mouse, changed monitors, changed/tried every USB port, unplugged every other peripheral except CPU/RAM/GPU and it keeps happening every so often. Finally caught it on video here. What is happening? Is this a mobo problem? has latest UEFI F4j.

The problem does not occur outside of the UEFI/BIOS; so once windows loads up the KB/M respond normally.

edit: I have also tried clearing CMOS, but the problem continues intermittently.

How do I prevent a vaulty power supply killing my pc parts? (When the psu is possible vaulty)

    Switching from console. Need advice.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:18 PM PDT

I decided on finally making the permanent switch to PC gaming after getting tired of low framerates, exclusives lacking replayability, no free online multiplayer, having to replace a console every so often, etc.

I'm a college student who studies out of state and thus, periodically drive to and from campus. The main things I'm looking for in a PC are - Compact size for transporting and space efficiency - Silence of PC to not bug me or the roommates - 1080p 144z with better graphical fidelity than a PS4 Pro (I have the monitor for it)

Truth be told, I'm not very interested in the newest games coming out besides like Doom Eternal, Elden Ring, or the new Call of Duty. I'm also hoping to play Sekiro, Dark Souls trilogy, and The Witcher 3 with max or near-to-max settings. I'm also intrigued by some VR opportunity if possible.

What GPU Upgrade From A GTX1050 2GB Would Be The Best? (i5 7400)

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:12 AM PDT

    So my prebuild Acer Aspire GX-781 is 2.5years old with an i5 7400, GTX 1050 2gb, 8GB ddr4 Ram, 128gb ssd.

And I'm looking to upgrade my rig to keep up with the latest stuff. I recently ordered 2x8 Ballistic DDR4 Ram sticks with a speed of 3000 Mhz, and now I'm looking for a newer GPU: I was thinking about the GTX 1660 (Ti), GTX 1070 or the RTX 2060 without bottlenecking my i5 7400. I currently play: Overwatch, PUBG, GTA5. And I wanna play the new modern warfare game but my 1050 wouldn't handle that at 60fps. My goal is to play all those games at +80/90FPS at medium settings -> I don't need high quality :P

Upgrading to a i7-9700k and I am using my corsair h100i pro AIO what thermal paste should I get because I am assuming I will need to reapply and wipe off the stock paste on my cooler.
