    New GPU but worse Performance

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 05:09 AM PDT

I recently upgraded my GTX 1070 to a RTX 2070Super and am I was getting worse performance than with my old GPU. A game like Rocket League that ran at max FPS (250fps) now ran at 180-240fps, eventhough when checking stats in CAM neither my CPU or GPU were used more than 40% or hotter than 50C. I deinstalled and then reinstalled the graphics drivers and every other driver I could think of.

I then tried using my old GPU again and it now has the SAME peformance as the new one, which is worse than before?? I have no Idea what the issue could be, also tried the other GPU slot on my motherboard.
If anyone has an idea what the issue could be I'd greatly appreciate it!

Need help with PC not booting after radiator fan fell off.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:32 AM PDT

So I was in the middle of a game when suddenly I heard a loud bang from my cpu and crazy audio static through headphones that caused me to throw them off and it completely froze my PC so I forced powered off my PC.

I opened up my case and saw that one of my radiator (h100i V2) fans fell off and actually broke (http://imgur.com/a/yL0AUOa).

So I wanted to see if my PC was ok so I tried turning it on and only stayed on for a half second and will just loop. I also noticed that the ezdebug light would flash from cpu to DRam then back to cpu really quick before cycling again. Video: (http://imgur.com/a/U77wXcS)

Would really appreciate the help. Thanks!

(I might be asleep since it's late now. Will be sure to check up on this post in the morning)

What CPU/GPU combo is better for these games?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:34 AM PDT

I'm looking to game at 1440p/1080p (depending on the game/settings) in addition to streaming. I'm planning to buy a 1080p and 1440p monitor for a dual monitor setup because of this.

I'd like to hit around 120 FPS in any game I play.

My main games will be Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, Minecraft, and Civ V. Other games I'm interested in are GTA V and Battlefield V but these are the ones I expect I'll need to play at 1080p.

Would a Ryzen 5 3600X + 2060 Super be enough for this, or should I aim for a 3700X/2070 Super?

I don't have much experience with PCs so I don't know what would be best for my goals. Any help would be awesome--thanks!!

Edit: This post got a lot more attention than I expected... And the responses are all pretty different 😂 I'm leaning towards the 3700x and 2070 super and having a 1440p monitor as my primary one. If you disagree that's the best option... Let me know why! I'm thinking it will keep me pretty safe when playing more intensive games at high settings while streaming. I'll have Gsync enabled also!

    Good cheap 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 05:59 AM PDT

Wrapping up my build and still need a good 144hz monitor for games like CSGO, assassin's creed, tomb raider etc. Whenever I look up reviews they keep contradicting eachother and I just end up more confused. Wondering if anyone can help me out. I'm from The Netherlands

Edit: looking for a 1080p, TN, G-Sync monitor

Happy Birthday to me! 3700X + platform upgrade!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 08:54 PM PDT

So if you follow me around on the Discord you're already aware of this: I'm apparently cursed. Killing 3 motherboards in the last two years for my 4770K rig has left me worried that my latest motherboard dumpster-dive from Kijiji won't survive. Hopefully a new system will fix that problem!

So, for my birthday, my wife drove me across the American border to the promised land where I saw some silly shit, my laptop for almost $1000 cheaper than what I paid for it, and obtained the blessed parts. Everything else picked up was courtesy of Amazon gift cards

Because you all came here for the pictures!

I'm astounded on how smooth this build went this time around, the move from ITX to ATX was worthwhile now that I'm not hauling a PC around by bus (college was fun!). Piecemeailing niceities over several purchases has helped keep me from cringing over buying a crapton of fans. The motherboard is pretty as hell, and being modern means nice things like PWM on fan headers, and fan curve controls, and BIOS updates via internet! The HDD is also going to be nice, because my 1TB died a while back and I've been meaning to start streaming again once work becomes less bonkers. Now I'll be able to store recordings again so people believe me when I say that I can win games in PUBG!

Lastly, you guys are all an awesome community and it humbles me that I can share my builds and experiences with you. Ask me questions and roast my part choices!

EDIT: The partlist is pulled from my PCPP saved lists, so everything was marked as purchased and had some stuff in Ameribucks, so I tweaked it. Note that anything marked with "Purchased at" is what I bought, so no I did not buy a GTX 1080 for 700 Canadian Rupees - that's insane. I've had that card for two years now :P

    Choosing Mass-storage

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:34 AM PDT

So, i'm planning on building a gaming PC. The budget is still a bit of a questionmark but i'm aiming for something between 1000- and 1500€. I'm currently struggling on choosing my mass-storage. From what i've understood, something like 500gb SSD and 1-2tb HDD is a pretty good combo. But could it be worth it to just go for 2tb SSD? Or maybe 1tb of them both? Here in Finland Samsung's 1tb SSD comes with relatively cheap price being only 129,90€ in a local store.

Another question i have is, what particular SSD's and HDD's do you recommend? For example, I've read a lot of negative stuff about seagates barracuda HDD's But they seem relatively cheap. Kingston's SSD's are also quite cheap, and i'm heavily considering their 480gb SSD. And Toshiba also seems to be a pretty affordable option.

And one last small question, should i install Windows 10 for SSD or HDD?

    All help will be appreciated.

    How's Realtek ALC1220 Working Out?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:20 PM PDT

I'm considering putting together an AM4 build & can rationalize buying a higher end board if the onboard audio is enough to retire my simple JDS DAC/Amp stack. It seems that every few years there's a new Realtek codec promising to be the one to eliminate background noise/hiss and every time it disappoints. It's quieter with a better PSU but never does it approach the claimed >100db noise figures from the spec sheet.

I'm currently on a Z170 board with ALC1150 and not only is it noisy but it doesn't provide enough power/gain for my 94db planar headphones. What I'm asking is:

    1. Is ALC1220 a noticable improvement over ALC1150?
    2. Is there significant variance between boards using the same codec in EMI rejection & amplification power?

    Late Birthday Build - 3700x or 3600

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 09:25 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

this will be a delayed birthday build for myself after coming back from prolonged work trip.

Now, this is my first build in 5 years (not that long) and I'm upgrading from an FX-6300 which served me well. Meaning performance gain will be massive anyway.

My use-case will be mostly gaming, RPG's, some Doom Eternal and maybe some recording or minor streaming like Total War Warhammer 2.

Though nothing competitive, I would still like to be future proof as I don't foresee upgrades in next 5 years.

I was hoping for some of your input into if I should go for the 3700x or the 3600.

The 6-core is a bit over half the price of the 3700x here.

Another matter is going 16 or 32 GB of RAM.

And finally the matter of the PC case. I was hoping to find some decent mATX case, something smaller then 42cm tall by 42 cm long, but the choice is hard

For now planning with going with this budget case SilentiumPC Signum SG1 TG by polish manufacturer and modding it white with spray paint. Specs are pretty decent and it's 40$

Otherwise I would have to aim for something higher-end.

    Here's the build draft

I would appreciate any additional advice about parts, motherboard, PSU etc included.

Will probably start ordering soon to not miss stock.

Should I wait until black Friday to build a PC?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:30 PM PDT

I'm starting the process of building a new gaming PC. I'm looking at building something top of the line and dropping roughly $6,000. I have my parts picked out but Its going to take me a until the beginning of October to get the money saved up. Are the savings on black friday / cybermonday usually worth waiting for? Has their been good deals on PC parts on those days in the past? I could probably wait until then if it meant money saved that I could put towards something else.

    Upgrading an under performing PC.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:12 PM PDT

I built my PC around 1 year ago at this point, I mainly use it to game (games like R6 Siege and CS:GO). It is equipped with a Ryzen 1500x CPU and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a GTX 1050 ti. Recently in my most played title (R6 Siege) I have noticed significant frame drops below my usual steady 70 - 100 FPS. My system also has troubles playing games and being in discord at the same time (distorted voice, cutting out etc.). So that leaves me with several questions:

1: Is my system just weak and its time to upgrade? If so what needs to be done?

2: would one part of the build be bottle-necking the other? (note: my GPU and CPU dont run at terrible differences in % usage but sometimes run a little hot.)

3: is there something else that can be done to rectify the situation? Some kind of tip and/or trick?

Thank you for your time and I would appreciate some guidance here as I know too little about Computers to make an executive decision without some guidance.

EDIT: my motherboard is the ASUS PRIME B350M-A. Rainbow six siege usually takes up to 30% of my CPU usage. My system runs hot. Sometimes up to 90 degrees. Give or take.

When is it worth upgrading from a 8GB RX 580?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:31 AM PDT

As the title says. There's a lot of great, but demanding games coming out in the next year or so and I was wondering if this would be a good time to upgrade my 580. I'm only interested in 1080p 60 fps gaming and ideally I'd like to play my games on high settings. I'd be thinking of something in a $500 CAD budget. For example, the rx 5700 is one that I had my eye on that fits in my budget.

    My current specs are:

    Ryzen 5 1600

    MSI RX 580 Armor OC

    MSI B350 Tomahawk

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15

Is my PC good enough to handle the current iteration of games at 1080p 60fps at med-high or will I be at a significant graphical and frame rate disadvantage if I don't upgrade.

Good morning Reddit! Recently, my PC and boxes of spare parts were stolen. My 3 dearest friends pooled together and got me a little something..

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:45 AM PDT

My desktop had a ryzen 1400, an r9 280x, 256gb SSD, 4tb hdd, x370 motherboard, and haf 912 case. All my peripherals too. Too many old parts to list were stolen too, as well as my Dell visor (but not my controllers!) I was devastated.

After everything went down, I calmed down and decided to pinch and save for a ryzen 3 laptop so I could still play destiny 2 with them (30fps most of the time). They kept suggesting this or that, an old optiplex + a 1030, or a very old used gaming laptop with a 650m or something like that. Those options were out of budget though.

About a month went by after I got the ryzen laptop, and I got a big package I wasn't expecting..

    http://imgur.com/a/hG6LL3x

Core i5 7600k, a GTX 1060 6gb, MSI h110, rosewill srm-01, an evga supernova 750w semi modular, and a 480gb SSD, as well as a neat Dell keyboard with two USB ports on it and a g502. No monitor though, I'm going to use my TV for the time being.

Not pictured is an Asus VR headset that didn't come with controllers :)

Cherish your friends, folks. I love these guys

    Have a good one!

Red CPU light on new Ryzen build. Looking for any help possible.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT

Hello everyone! This is my first pc build and I'm having problems. When I go to boot up a red light labeled CPU lights up on my motherboard. The fans spin but no signal to my monitor. (If I plug hdmi into gpu or motherboard)

I've tried nearly everything I can think of with the same results. Reseated cpu, ram, and gpu. Tried booting out of case on cardboard. So far nothing has worked and I'm kind of terrified.

(Planning to ryzen new gen when it's out but was hoping to use this cpu in the meantime...)

My first gaming rig I built, with your help!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:45 PM PDT

Let me start off thanking everyone in this sub who reply almost instantaneously whenever someone posts a question, whether it's for troubleshooting or a build help.

So, for almost 4 years now I've been getting along on my Alienware 15 R2 with a Nvidia GeForce 965m. A mediocre card at best but it did alright running most games at medium (though no 60fps). It was time to make a switch, and a big one at that.

I named my new pc ALIEN ONE, in tribute to my Alienware. Might be a bit corny but I like it. Anyway, these are the specs:

    • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO
    • CPU: Intel Core i7 9700K 3.6 Ghz
    • CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15
    • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 16GB
    • HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
    • SSD: Crucial MX500 500GB
    • PSU: Corsair RMx Series RM 750x (80 PLUS Gold)
    • Case: Cooler Master MasterBox MB511 RGB

I do not plan to overclock it, since the games I've tried already run great at ultra on 2K or 4K settings (depends on the game). My main reason for this rig was to continue pursuing my hobby and (future) career as a graphics artist - so I'll need the hardware to run as long as it can. I hope you folks like the rig!

Building a PC for scientific computing -

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:24 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Looking to build a pc that can be used for small to medium scale physics simulations. Essentially a computer that can multiply together large matrices quickly. I believe this more or less translates into needing a shit hot CPU and massive amounts of RAM. There's a possibility of dabbling with GPGPU computing, as well as some machine learning but it's not the number one priority. Whatever desktop we settle on, we'll be building 3 or 4 of them, so if we end up wanting to do anything GPU intensive we'll probably strip out the cards from the other units to beef one up. Finally, just in case it makes a difference, I'll mention that the machine will be running some linux distro.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Not gaming, but I'd be open to any suggestions for a nice screen.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

For practical purposes limitless, but unless there's a truly worthwhile upgrade it would be nice to keep it below $5000, as the money we don't spend will probably go towards the university's HPC cluster.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The US

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The parts above are a rough first pass at putting together a high performance machine. I am by no means knowledgeable about hardware, so am looking for any advice on whether there are superior parts to pick, and whether I'm missing anything/need to check parts compatibility. Finally, I'd like to ask if there would be a significant performance gain using a more sophisticated cooling system, and whether that's likely to be worth the faff.

Thanks for reading, looking forward to hearing any input you all might have.

    Best card for 1080p/60Hz?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:27 PM PDT

    Title pretty much says it.

My current build is six years old, and my video card is way too weak for most current games. I'm planning to build a new rig during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales --- hopefully all the new AIBs and motherboards will be out and bug-free by then.

I was going to spend a bundle and future-proof, but reading this sub has convinced me that it's better to build cheaper and more often, than to get the highest end stuff once every five years or so. Plus, it's a lot of fun to build a new PC, and I can do it more often with the second strategy.

So, it looks like I can save the most money by cutting down on the video. A 2080 Ti and a good 4k/144Hz monitor will cost $2K or more. But I don't really need that; if I can play everything at 1080P and 60 Hz, I can have 99% as much fun, use my current monitor, and probably spend around $300 for a new card. Hopefully, in two or three years I can get a card and monitor that plays 4K/144Hz for around $500 each.

So my question is, what's a good bang for the buck GPU that is likely to be able to play any game out now, or any game likely to come out in the next two years, at 60fps/1080p? I've already decided to go with the Ryzen 3600 for my CPU, and probably a mid-range X470 mobo, if that helps. And I'm willing to pay extra for low heat and noise.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Do I need integrated graphics?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:19 PM PDT

So I can buy a 9900k or a 9900kf , only differences are the kf doesn't have integrated graphics and costs £20 less but do I need integrated graphics If I'm gonna use an ASUS ROG Strix 2080Ti Graphics card? Also because it won't have integrated graphics will that mean it will run cooler then the 9900K?
