Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:02 PM PDT Hello I just wanted to share some good tips when you are planning to purchase a new laptop. A lot of Laptop dealers at the moment have ongoing deals as a result of Student discounts. In order to full get the best value out of your potential laptop there are a few things you may have to do but it might be worth your while.
Company's such as Lenovo will often offer you a specially discount when you create an account for their website. Lenovo for example offers up to 100$ off for your first time purchase ( this might not seem like a lot but it adds up.)
For example on the US store the latest X1 Carbon Gen 7 is currently available for $1300 ( lowest spec) compared to its 2150 original list price. (A steal in my opinion. ) I would be a good idea to search for these kind of deal irrespective of the brand you are buying from.
I promise I am not sponsored, however Honey can play a pivotal role in saving some extra bucks. It checks its database for the best coupon that can be used on your purchase,. i was able to save about 1200$ from the original list price of 2800$ by applying the coupon "THINKPADSALE" which worked for me . Conclusion: By combining all of these methods I was able to go form 2950(including tax) to about 1600$ Wishing you guys the same success I was able to get. Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:00 AM PDT So the first year of uni is coming up and I'm looking for a decent laptop I can take notes on, so I'd prefer it had a touch screen. Also, I'm looking to program on it since I'm studying computer science but it doesn't have to be a processing power monster. Budget is around 800€ (1000€ if the situation is dire) and I hope it can make it through 4 years of uni with me. I think I can get away with charging the laptop between brakes or even in class so I'm looking for performance over battery life. It would be nice if it didn't weigh a lot but anywhere below 5kg is acceptable. Here's the tricky part, I might have to dual boot windows and Linux so I really don't know how much drive space it needs, I'll have an external hdd for anything I can get away with storing on it. Screen size N/A. I'll be using it for programing, taking notes on it and possibly CAD, I have a beefy pc for gaming so don't bother with that. As for other specs, I really want a touch screen that works with styluses, backlit keyboard would be nice but it's definitely not a must. Originally I thought a Lenovo Yoga would be good but their prices are spicy and I have a feeling that's primarily because of marketing. Any suggestions are welcome. Edit: if the touchscreen requirement os too much of a bother, I could drop it for a classic, better laptop. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Legion Y540 or HP Omen 15 Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:56 AM PDT Both these laptops have similar specs and I'm not sure which one to choose. I'll be using the laptop for school and gaming. The Y540 cost like 200-250 more but there are quiete a few people saying that the Omen 15 makes alot of noise (which is kinda disturbing during college). Which one of the 2 laptops would be your choice and why? [link] [comments] |
Help with a gaming laptop With a budget around $750 and from México Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:06 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: México and 750 **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Decent specs and battery, doesn't have to be top tier-* How important is weight and thinness to you? -Very important! I travel quite a bit so I'd like the lightest I can get- * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Linux- * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -13inch seems like a good size without being too large- * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -Maybe a bit of Photoshop * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -N/A, I have a separate PC for gaming- * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Good build quality would be nice since I'll be carrying it a lot with me and I want something that'll last a few years- * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -I'm beginning to learn to code, and I have a lot of downtime at my work (12 hour night shifts), so I was wanting to get a laptop that's really light because I'll be carrying it around with me and I travel a lot. I'm learning on my own with online programs but I'm also planning to go back to school so I'd be using it for classes as well. Nothing else matters for needs outside of coding programs and classes because I have other PCs, a tablet, decent smartphone for everything else. I've been researching on my own, but I'm getting overwhelmed by the choices as I only need it for coding and educational content.- [link] [comments] |
Now or later? Dell xps 15 7590 Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:45 PM PDT Basically the title. Should I wait for student sales or should I just buy it now? In amazon i7, 16gb ram, 1TB ssd and 4k screen is 2.1k$. And also, maybe I should buy something else? I want a laptop with great built quality, light and thin workstation with good screen for photo/video editing(Mainly photos for now). [link] [comments] |
first time buying a gaming laptop Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT I don't want anything crazy, and I'm not trying to spend thousands of dollars or anything. Right now I'm looking at a few options, and because I'm not great at understanding the specs, I'd appreciate any feedback on which of these is superior : - Acer Predator Helios - Dell G5 - Lenovo Y530 - MSI 85C-029 - HP Omen [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:40 AM PDT So I'm confused between the two. My usage is photo and video work. PUBG. I'm only listing the difference in specs that I noticed. Both are priced similarly at an offline store. Y730 specs: i7 8750H 1050Ti 144 Hz display No dedicated numpad. Y540 specs: i7 9750H 1650 60 Hz display Dedicated numpad. Which one should I get? Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:55 PM PDT I don't know very much about computers. I want something easy to use, I've been using a $100 slow piece of garbage for two years now and I would like a faster and better one for college. I like the appeal of Macbook but is there another one that would be good for a student? I like to watch videos and I always have a bunch of tabs open at the same time. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

I know Ice Lake just got announced but word seems to be that we wont see it in anything until November at the earliest. Help with a Laptop for video-editing, 3d rendering and post-production Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:08 AM PDT Hello everyone! I'm gonna start a bachelor in multimedia design and post-production and I'm looking for a laptop able to withstand the workload, since my current laptop is barely able to keep up with Chrome. I'd love to get a Macbook pro and stuff, but I can't afford it at the moment and I think it would be probably better to start with something in my league and eventually upgrade when and if things get serious (not necessarily a MBP but you get the point) I was looking for something in the 1200-1400 euro range and I stumbled upon 2 decent choices being: ASUS VivoBook Pro N580GD-DM452T 1200 euros
and MSI PS63 MODERN 8RC-018IT for 1400 euros
My understanding is that the MSI has a better battery life and a cool thing is that it comes with an empty memory slot, meaning I can eventually upgrade to 32gb of RAM when push comes to shove. On the other hand the Asus has a better chipset (I think..?) and I think also a better screen. I'm not sure if the graphic card is basically the same written in 2 different ways, or if the MSI has an advanced version of the 1050 Can someone give me advice on these 2 configuration? I'm not sure if the more powerful Chipset will really make a difference or if the MSI is overall more balanced and the RAM will eventually make a difference. I don't even know which one has the better screen and if it's going to be a really dramatic factor, given that both of them are not 4Ks. I'm also open to other ideas, but so far this is the best I could find. Thanks so much for taking your time to read this and I look forward to some answers! [link] [comments] |

Gaming/Media machine 1000$ Japan/USA Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:41 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally under 1000$ in Japan or USA, but very flexible budget. Really looking for value here. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? 2 in 1 is nice, looking for middling battery life, but very value driven. Specs will largely be limited by USB-C charging How important is weight and thinness to you? No battleships please, but anything around 4-5 lbs is fine. Light and thin is a plus as long as it's sturdy. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: Windows or Linux Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 inches, flexible to smaller sizes. Any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Gaming, details below. Do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Skyrim, at 60 fps1080p. (Settings don't really matter, pretty sure max on a game that old is doable) The most taxing would be something like Total War: Warhammer, but I seriously doubt I would try that on a laptop. But 1080p Medium settings? Maybe a laptop could do alright... Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Quality 1080p 60hz (ideally Touchscreen). 4k is just a waste of power and money at this size and price point. USB-C charging is a must. We have usb-c phones and laptops already and it's so nice around the house. Backlit keyboard, but nothing too extreme if possible. Would really prefer professional over cringe design. An optical drive would be a plus but good luck finding that. Finishing thoughts: This is meant to be a shared home laptop. Watching netflix outside, reading a recipe in the kitchen, or gaming while traveling. (Wife loves Skyrim) The last laptop like this I got was around 600$ but I deeply regret having such a bad screen on that machine. I'll even trade touchscreen so long as the touchpad is good and the screen quality is excellent. This may be at odds with good color quality, but I'd also like a good response time. The last laptop was so bad I could feel the delay (on top of the garbage colors) but that was likely due to old touch screen tech. If there is some really great deal on a 4k OLED I would consider it because I know those panels have reviewed very positively. Battery life is a priority, but I'm really just hoping to get above that 5-6 hour mark knowing that in the future it will decay to 3 or so. A discrete gpu hurts this a lot, but so many machines throw in big processors too which I don't want. I've been eyeballing the XPS 15 but I feel like the CPU is overpowered for the GPU it has (if any), and I can't find any reviews of the non-OLED screen. Razer Blade 15 seems very pricey for an overkill processor and storage. I have a pretty robust home setup for storage so anything over 512 Gb is kind of excessive since we don't game enough to keep 20 triple A titles downloaded on our machine. [link] [comments] |

Lenovo Thinkpad Extreme Gen 2 on sale is it worth it? Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:38 AM PDT Basically as the title says, adding the promo code "THINKBIG" changes the price from $2,880 to $1,729 So just wondering if this is worth it? Should I buy this for the upcoming school year and will it last me for a few years? I will be using it for productivity mainly while only playing league and apex Legends on it seeing how I have a gaming desktop to play other games. Would appreciate what you guys think. Hearthstone, Facetime, and Netflix Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:18 PM PDT Edit: I used Facetime as a generic term for video chat. I didn't mean Facetime exclusively I'm looking for a laptop and I need help on finding one. As the title says, those 3 things plus simple web browsing are what I will be using it for. I want to be able to play Hearthstone on max settings and that's my most demanding requirement. I won't be playing any other games and based on that, I don't believe I need a "gaming laptop". Can someone please suggest to me the best laptop for my needs? Under $1k. [link] [comments] |

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DT-AL087 - Question! (: Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:00 AM PDT Hey guys! I'd like to get some information about the notebook mentioned in the title: https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-FX505DD-DT-DU/ I'm looking to buy the following configuration: Ryzen 5 3550H GTX 1650 512 GB SSD 1) Will I get the 120hz panel with the configuration and model number mentioned above? There are two panel options for this notebook, 60hz and 120hz. 2) Considering, that the display is FreeSync capable, will it work with the dedicated GTX 1650 card? As far as I know, there were updates about some NVIDIA driver modifications. Thank you in advance, if any of you can help me! TurboSean [link] [comments] |
