    Background Information

This post is written for those that will be going for a 3000 series build. Not here to start a war between Intel and AMD.

I have been a Intel user my whole life (+25 years). I recently got myself an AMD 3000 build and have been quite impressed. I have written some guides for the AMD forum and would like to share them with you all here.

The goal for Ryzen 3000 is to get a clock frequency as close to 3800 Mhz as possible with the lowest CAS you can get while keeping the Infinity Fabric clock equal to your DRAM clock. It's best explained here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14525/amd-zen-2-microarchitecture-analysis-ryzen-3000-and-epyc-rome/11

    Here's the important data

    1. Hardware Unboxed Data Analyzed: 3900x + RAM Scaling vs. 9900K collected by me

As you can see, grabbing a decent ram KIT and tweaking it will get a 3900X to trade blows directly with a stock 9900K. I guess if you're sticking with the stock cooler, the extra money can go towards a better RAM kit. The stock cooler doesn't perform that bad with Ryzen 3000 as shown by hardware unboxed.

    Recommendations

If you're interested in grabbing a kit and tweaking a little, after having discussions with other users, a lot of us have had great success with grabbing a 3600 Mhz CL16 kit and getting it to 3600 CL14. As you can see from Linus test results, 3800 Mhz CL16 = 3600 Mhz CL14. If you have time to tweak and you get lucky, 3800 Mhz CL14 would give you quite a nice boost in performance.

If you just want to grab a kit and not tweak it much at all. Grab 3200 CL14 and let it be.

If you have money to throw away? Grab a 3800 Mhz CL16 and tune them to 3800 CL14!

EDIT: Also wanted to add, 3200 Mhz CL14 and 16 are nearly equal in performance. For some reason, at this speed CL13, 14, 15 and 16 are all equal.

    https://lab501.ro/procesoare-chipseturi/amd-ryzen-3000-part-iv-ddr4-scaling-english-version/24

The only reason to grab 3200 Mhz CL14 is if you're trying to go 3600 Mhz CL14 or CL16.

EDIT 2: Again, about 3200 CL14 vs CL16, games that are pretty CPU intensive will see a difference like Battlefield V. It's safe to grab the CL16 kit and tune it to CL14 IMO. I think this is very doable. Users have been grabbing the Ballistix Sport LT kit tweaking them.

We rebuilt my partner's computer. Moving the same parts to a new NR600 case and adding a Hyper 212 cooler reduced CPU temps from 80C to 40C while gaming and MB temps from 60C to 30C while gaming. What an improvement!

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 06:07 PM PDT

My partner's PC was built in early 2012 on an Intel i5-3570 and an XFX Radeon HD 6950 in a Rosewill Challenger U2 case. We never really worried too much about thermals because it would get around 50-60C, which wasn't cool, but not really anything to write home about.

Recently though she wanted to get more frame rates out of Final Fantasy XIV. It's a pretty graphics-intense game, so we went and bought her a Radeon 5700, along with a set of RGB case fans (she loves colors and missed out on the RGB trend in 2012). Of course, the card started to work the CPU more and even with the extra cooling, the CPU and graphics started to pour a lot of heat into the case. Temps shot up, Mobo temps went up to 60C and CPU temps went up to 80C while gaming. Fans would ramp up to 2000 RPM almost as soon as the game started - it was a total rocket.

She wanted to upgrade the computer eventually but I asked if the game was running slow and it really wasn't. However the thermals were worrying so for her birthday I bought her a Cooler Master NR600 - one of the best budget thermal cases and (with a recommendation from /r/buildapc) a Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB.

We installed it all and the result was phenomenal - CPU runs at 40C while the game's running and the Mobo is around 30C, just a touch above room temperature, AND the fans are running at less than half of their previous speed. Same build but EVERYTHING is quieter. It's like it's a brand new computer.

The case makes such a huge difference!

    Here's some pics.

    Specs:

    • Intel i5-3570. Yes, it's old, but it works fine for now. When it's too slow, we'll think about upgrading.
    • AsRock Z77 Pro 3
    • 8 GB of some kind of DDR3 G-Skill RAM
    • A bronze-rated Seasonic PSU. I think the fan in this PSU is the loudest thing in the build now.
    • Radeon 5700 (reference)
    • Samsung EVO 860 1TB
    • Samsung 830 128 GB
    • Some 2 TB hard drive
    • CoolerMaster NR600 case
    • CoolerMaster Hyper 212 RGB CPU cooler
    • CoolerMaster MasterFan 120R A-RGB fans

Traveling international with brand new PC parts, have a few questions

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 12:37 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I posted a build-help request last week and everyone here was absolutely incredible. Thank you all so much for the help, everything has finally arrived and now I'm getting ready to travel with my brother back home to Mexico where he lives with my pops (I live in Las Vegas). Instead of putting together the build here, I decided to bring all the pieces to his final destination and assemble it there. That said I'm a bit unsure of what's allowed/recommended when traveling internationally with PC parts.

I'll be traveling from Las Vegas to Mexico via American Airlines. I can bring two checked bags, a carryon and a backpack. One of my carryons will be a small rolling luggage.

I did try to do research before coming here, but most posts were like 8-12 years old and most referred to prebuilt PCs or laptops, not brand new hardware. I'd like to keep some stuff in original packaging but these boxes are massive for small parts, so it's seems silly. I can buy bubble wrap, anti-static, etc, I just wanted some advice on what you guys would recommend as far as: what can be brought on the plane? What needs to be checked? What should not be checked? Do I need to declare things? Etc.

Thanks for all the help, and I'm sorry if I broke any rules with this post. You all rock!

Not booting - Bang and puff of smoke from PSU after new GPU install.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:01 PM PDT

    Hey /r/buildapc,

Today after waiting for it to come in stock my Asus ROG Strix 2070S OC arrived.I was more than pretty excited because it was replacing the last non Asus / Corsair part of my PC.

I uninstalled my AMD drivers from my old card, I took the old GPU out, and put the new one in, swapped the power cables to two 8 pin cables and spent time putting the combs through them to make them look nice.

This is where I'm not sure I did the right thing. My white PCI-E cable that split from a type 4 (into the PSU) into 2x 6 pins + 2x 2 pins (That say PCIe) was looking a little grubby, but I had other white 8 pin cables (but these were 8 pin into PSU and 8 out labeled as CPU) and I used them.

I got everything put back together and plugged in, switched the power switch on the PSU and hit the power button. Nothing.

So I took the side back off of the case and took out the power cables to the motherboard and removed and replugged the GPU cables - thinking that I'd maybe not got them all the way into the modular PSU. Deciding to keep the side off of the case incase more work was required I plugged back in the power cable, flicked the switch and then BANG, puff off smoke from the PSU and then nothing.

    • I took the GPU and the power cables out and I tried to boot. Nothing.
    • The fan test button on my PSU works and the fan still spins.
    • There are no lights illuminated on my motherboard - I think there was an orange one illuminated top right before. But I can't find anything in the manual to suggest otherwise.

I'm not really sure what to do now. Is my motherboard fried? Could my CPU, RAM, GPU and storage be fried too?

If it's fried was it my fault? Or was it a faulty component? Do I speak to Corsair or Asus first about figuring out what to try? (Out of hours for their phones in the UK just now)

    Any help appreciated.

Lets get serious: The current situation between Intel and AMD right now?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 05:08 AM PDT

How big are the differences between the two brands at the moment? It seems to me, and I am a real Amateur, as if the gap between AMD and Intel CPUs in the sense of Followers/supporters has been getting smaller and smaller over the last few years. What are the major differences between the two brands at the moment? And especially: How is it with Nvidia and AMD.

And even further: If you google: CPU, the first 20 results are Intel, now is that fair? Could it be possible that google also contributes to the rivalry between AMD and Intel by advertising Intel more?

    What do you know/think?

Computer won't turn on after upgraded MOBO, CPU and ram

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 09:22 AM PDT

    Greetings!

So I recently bought an MSI x470 motherboard along with a Ryzen 5 2600X 6 core CPU and corsair vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) for RAM. I'm using a 650 W PSU from my old build and the damned thing won't turn. I thought I had gotten a dead motherboard so I returned it for a replacement (thanks, Newegg) but I still had the problem. I took the graphics card out of the rig to see if that would start it up, still no luck. I also took it to a repair shop for their expert opinion and all they could offer was that the motherboard is dead ( which led to the replacement). Any thoughts or advice from people would be much appreciated!

Edit: The computer is completely dead, no fans (PSU or otherwise) nor lights. Thanks for all the replies!

About to start building my first computer at 14. Wish me luck and no blue screens

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT

Just got all my parts to arrive, on my first day of highschool. Hopefully I will be back soon with a completey successful build! Edit : My 3600 does not seem to be staying in the socket even after bring down the bar/lever to secure it. A few pins were slightly bent and I gently put them back in place and tried again. My understanding is that you just line it up correct and then gently drop it in and move the lever down. Please help, thanks! (Youtube is not helping much:( )

    Which CPU?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:47 PM PDT

I don't know much about PC's I recently have decided I should build one. Better than buying laptops that are over £2K when a PC for £2K will last me much longer and play games and much more. As a person not knowing much I always preferred intel over AMD as intel is a household name and AMD not so much. However, with the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x with 12 cores my understanding is; it's better with things like video editing and streaming? If I am wrong please do correct me I am willing to learn more. Also I find it more daunting trying to build my first pc with Amd chipsets since only some motherboards are suitable and also the BIOS stuff seems confusing.

What ive tried so far: Changing the ports for the psu to a differrnt one.

Making sure the wires are fully into the port on the RT.

I made sure the wires and pcie slot still work by switching my RTX to my old Gtx 1080 and everything worked with that.

My psu is an 850Watt G2 evga. im not really sure what to do at this point, maybe the wires just dont work with the rtx or something because they work with the 1080. If it is the wires, can someone link me to replacement wires for PSU to graphics card one for the rtx.

    any help would be appreciated!

    Hello old friend!

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Well sh*t here we go again.

I've had my PC built about 3 months ago with some advice given to me on this subreddit. But let's get to the point, 1 of my 2 siblings play on my PC and the other plays on our family old Toshiba laptop. Games as basic as minecraft can't even run smoothly on the laptop and there might be a slight disadvantage when going against each other. I thinking of building a home PC or a all rounder for the household then I don't have to build multiple machines.

I will go with a second gen ryzen system, I am only familiar with 2nd, not 3rd gen and the prices of 3rd mobos.

Mobo: MSI itx b450 ac, because the atx one is harder to get.

Any recommendations to other parts? The least they will do is Minecraft, roblox, YouTube and web browsing. Trying not to spend too much as it is a home system.

    Is 3950x Build worth it?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:39 PM PDT

Hello, I am a content creator and I make living using PC. Currently, I make 1080p videos but would like to transfer to 4k as I see this trend is going to go up (especially with new wifi 6 and 5G).

So my current build is: 2700x (wraith cooler), 3200 MHz 32 GB Hyperx RAM, x470 Gigabyte Gaming Ultra MoBo, 500W PSU (80+ Bronze) Antec, 2080Ti Colorful, 1TB M.2 SSD, 250GB M.2, 2TB 7200 RPM Seagate HDD,

I'd like to add that even if you watch 4k video at 720p it looks better than watching 720p because of youtube compression. Also, I will use optical fiber so Internet speed will not be a bottleneck. When I try to edit videos my CPU goes up to 100% and just cannot handle previewing 4k (full rez in Premiere). I have to use the best resolutions as my eyesight is deteriorating rapidly and it was caused by my bad genetic combined with watching low resolutions (this is from a specialist).

For my next build, I intend to use these parts after reviews and benchmarks in September:

    3950x water-cooled 32 GB 3200MHz RAM, MSI X570 GODLIKE or ASUS X570 Crosshair VIII Hero (I haven't researched fully), 1TB M.2 SSD, 10TB 7200RMP HDD, 850 W V850 Platinum (from Coolermaster), 2080Ti Colorful ,

My budget is around 4500USD and I am buying parts In Croatia where they are approximately 30% more expensive than the USA.

I would get 2080Ti from my old PC and buy used 1060 or 1070 for it to be my backup PC because something always happens.

Keep in mind that I do this for a living would like to make myself enjoy it as much as possible so I am happy about doing the work and inspired to do more and earn more.

Programs that I use are Premiere Pro and Photoshop 90% of the time, sometimes I use DaVinci Resolve but am not that comfortable with it.

I am not a complete noob when it comes to parts and I do not cling to AMD, Intel or nVidia and try to buy the best fit for my purpose. I know there are much smarter guys when it comes to this and that is why I am posting this also I'd like to know if something seems like a rash decision because I know my emotions can cloud my judgment when I am buying something I want.

    Thank you.

Edit : I do occasional gaming but not competitive I game in 4K to enjoy the game (around 10-15hours per month)

After many years of using laptops, finally built my own PC! Microcenter really is the best shopping experience!

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:37 PM PDT

Kudos to this sub because in less than a month, I was able to find sufficient information about parts for the kind of setup I was looking for. I went into this initially wanting an Intel CPU mainly because I never used an AMD computer and therefore had no clue how to make comparisons to equivalent Intel setups. But, with enough YouTubing, Googling, PCPart Picking, and browsing this sub, I finally came to this final build:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X

    GPU: Radeon RX 570 8GB

    Motherboard: ASRock B450M Pro 4

    RAM: Rip Jaws V 3200Mhz x2 8GB

    PSU: Powerspec 650W

    Storage: m.2 Intel 1TB NVMe

    Monitor: LG 21.5" IPS 75Hz

    Case: Thermaltake v100

My reasoning for this build is my aim for light gaming and adequate computing power for hobby level of video editing. Took me roughly 6 hours and my main issue was that the front panel audio jack wasn't working when I plugged in my headphones. But it was a simple fix because the HD audio cord somehow unhooked from the motherboard. Really glad everything went smoothly. Microcenter truly is recommended for newbies because if I had ordered my parts online, I would had bought RAM by Aegis that was apparently incompatible with my chosen CPU. Something PC Part Picker wouldn't know.

I do have one regret though and that is how I went through the trouble hooking up the RGB fan that came with the CPU and using a case with a non-transparent side panel. I originally didn't think I would care about the pretty lights, but once I saw how the lights ossillated, I really dug the effect. Anyone know if it's possible to simply buy a clear side panel for my mid tower case? Or am I pretty much stuck with this case until I decide to get a new case?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 06:14 AM PDT

Hi everyone, can you please have a look at the build, I am pretty much ready to order all the parts.

My main concern is that the website says that there might be compatibility issues between r5 3600 and b450 max, aren't these updated tomahawk mobos supposed to be working fine with new ryzen cpus?

Would greatly appreciate any advice, thanks.

    Psu dilemma

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 12:50 PM PDT

Hello friends i am trying to build a pc but i am running into a few problems Amd gpus arent super common in my country so my options are the 1650 or the 1660 I decided to shell out the extra cash for the 1660 since the 1650 is horrible value

However there is a problem one of the areas i am lacking in is the psu The bronze rated psus are a bit expensive But the thermal take and coolermaster non rated psus are much cheaper

So my question is are cooler master and thermal take reliable options even tho they arent rated

For refrence i am planning to get a ryzen 2600 and b450m mobo to pair with the gtx 1660.

    Budget build check!

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 06:22 AM PDT

Hey all, back after a few days of indecision and reconfiguring. I'm looking to use this for school, small programming projects, and hopefully some games. I haven't played anything seriously since my last desktop, so the only title I'm guaranteed to try out on this machine is MapleStory for nostaglia's sake.

I'm happy with where I'm at now (I can't get the table to format properly in markdown, but the total is ~$510), but I'm wondering if it would be better to drop down from the Ryzen 3400G to the 3200G to save the $50 with the intention of possibly adding a GPU later? As well as generally how things line up-- there are no compatibility flags, but I know that I don't know enough to be sure everything will be utilized properly.

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming/streaming, your typical browsing/light workload nonsense. Occasional video encoding.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p, 144 Hz, high settings on single-player, probably low in MP games (I already play this way in Apex).

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Right now it's landing at ~CAD$3000, including a monitor.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I built my original 'puter back in ye olde 2011, and somehow it has kept up (I use that term loosely as of late) over the years, most likely due to upgrading the graphics card 3 times (460 Ti --> 670 --> 1070). Now, thanks to a new job (and an amazon pricing error), I'm planning on a big boy upgrade to the Ryzen 9 3900X, and would like an opinion on the acoutrements that I selected. A lot of these parts were picked out with the help of a very knowledgeable friend that I trust, but I would also like more opinions/discussion/a sanity check on everything.

    Good budget CPU cooler?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 03:31 PM PDT

Title pretty much explains it. I'm looking for a budget CPU cooler that is compatible with the AMD Ryzen 7 3800x. Thanks!

IO sheild Came pre installed on the motherboard. Do I have to take it off and snap it in?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 03:20 PM PDT

I actually just tried taking it off but it won't snap in. I have a MPG x570 gaming edge wifi board and NZXT 500i case.

Unable to POST after memory upgrade on 7700K with DDR4-3200CL14 memory at 3200 Mhz.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:50 PM PDT

I recently bought some new RAM after moving my previous memory to another system. Unfortunately I can't seem to get this system to POST with RAM at 3200 Mhz and I haven't been able to figure out why. My suspicion is that the memory controller on my CPU just kind of sucks. The system has otherwise been stable for some years now.

Here's what has worked for me:

    • System can POST with either DIMM installed individually in slot 2 and XMP frequency & timings enabled.
    • System can POST with both DIMMs installed in slots 2/4 at XMP timings and RAM frequency lowered to 3067 Mhz.
    • Moving both memory sticks from slots the recommended 2/4 to slots 1/3 allowed it to POST at 3100 Mhz.

    Some other things I tried:

    • Updated to latest BIOS v1.08.
    • No success with attempting to POST with RAM at 3200 Mhz with automatic timings.
    • No success with XMP enabled and raising RAM voltage to 1.4V.
    • No success with setting both VCCIO and VSA to 1.0V. (I don't know what the optimal voltage is but this works at 3100 Mhz)

Any ideas? Does this RAM need to be RMA'd? Here's a link to the motherboard manual for reference.

    1440p Ryzen Build Check.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 08:49 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, light photo and video editing, light plex transcoding.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1440p 144hz.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Sub $1000. I'm not trying to min-max performance per dollar and will appreciate aesthetic choices if somewhat close in price.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm looking to do a mostly new build after several years of doing piecemeal updates to my current machine. The main driver for the build is that my current case does not have the drive bays to add additional 3.5" drives and a want for more threads in the CPU.

I've been impressed with the Ryzen series and would like to buy Red for the first time in decades. The GTX 1080 I have seems to be satisfying the gaming needs I have at the moment and can drive high frames for the 1440p monitors I currently have. This check is to ensure I'm not mismatching parts for CPU, Mobo, RAM, and Case or to be educated on specifics I may not be aware of since I haven't done a new build in some time.
