AMD Ryzen 9 3900X: Advice on a Thunderbolt 3 (certified) motherboard such as ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:47 AM PDT

My plan is to immediately make a compact build with the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X and the ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 motherboard, and if that works great, when the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is released I'll make another, bigger, build with the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X and ASRock X570 Aqua. This is mainly for development purposes on compile-time heavy languages such as Rust, although I occasionally do Golang.

I must stress that I want to make really compact build. Budget is not really an issue, but I don't want to waste money for no reason on things like RGB (sorry, if this offends you) and making the system look pretty.

Questions for AMD Ryzen 9 3900X build:

    1. What other X570 motherboards support Thunderbolt 3 (certified) aside from the ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3?
    2. I am confused about the cooler situation with the ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3. To make matters super simple, what cooler shall I purchase? Please suggest a specific product or a direct link would be even better. I appreciate it, thank you.
    3. Will the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary or the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT fit into a ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3?
    4. Can I output video from the Thunderbolt 3 port on the ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 to my monitor that supports video-in via USB-C?
    5. What's the most powerful aftermarket AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT card, from my searching it seems that ASUS Radeon RX 5700 XT ROG STRIX OC 8GB GDDR6 PCIe 4.0 Graphics Card, 7nm RDNA, 2560 Streams, 1770MHz GPU, 2035MHz Boost is the most powerful one, is that correct? Apparently the latter card supports a Maximum Digital Resolution of 7680x4320 @ 60Hz (8K UHD).

    Build details:

The board support "1 Hyper M.2 (PCIe Gen4 x4)" that is why I am getting a 2TB drive.

Please don't ask me to go Intel, it won't happen.

I have 4 120mm fans.. 3 are case one is cpu.. HOW FAST should they be going?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:37 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list. corsair 120mm magnetic case fans

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. Is the cpu fan suppose to be faster or slower than the case fans?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I have software and tried both.. but I duno if theres a definitive answer.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here. its a simple cpu case fan

Provide any additional details you wish below. So, in command center because click bios wont allow you to actually change any settings. I have the cpu at 75% and the case fans at 50% and thats the only wayit seems comfortable atm. does that make sense? on default it runs the cpu at like 200rpm and the case fans at like 1500.

How I have it set so its not messing anything up for me is 2000rpm cpu and case fans at 1500rpm.

    I might’ve just blew 3200 and I’m shaking

    Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:34 PM PDT

I'm not sure where else to put this but I need help quick. So I was buying a origin pc for about 3200 and I used PayPal to pay for it. When I hit continue on PayPal it redirected me to a error screen and when I refreshed the page it said "You're order could not be placed" Then when I went to go check my PayPal I had payed 3200 to some random customer service email and I have no idea what to do because I didn't get a order number, receipt or anything and I'm so scared that my parents are going to get absolutely infuriated with me because of this. What do I do now to fix this??

Considering going to AMD for the first time. Anything to know to a prior intel only user?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:43 AM PDT

So I'm trying to make a budget pc for school. I've gotten every component from old scrapped intel based pc. The only thing I'm looking to upgrade is my mother board, cpu, and ram( currently have ddr3 and not looking for a motherboard compatible for that). I've been looking at the pc sales subreddit and have seen some good deals in the price range I'm looking for but they are mostly all AMD. I have absolutely no experience with an AMD system. Any things to know before moving over? Also are there any other components that I may currently have that may only be compatible with intel? My price range for my cpu is about 200, motherboard about 100 that can support 2 970's SLI. If you know of any good components for that price range I'd very much appreciate it. Also is ram intel or AMD based or does it not matter?

    No Display

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:53 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My pc has failed to boot up when turning on this morning.

When I press the power switch the pc starts up with fans and LEDS running as usual but nothing happens on the screen. This is what I have tried so far upon my own trouble shooting.

    • Screen works fine with other uses, as does HDMI cable. ( I have also tried using another screen&HDMI)

    • I have tried a new power supply which resulted in the same issue.

    • I have removed graphics card and attempted to boot with onboard which also resulted in the same issue.

I am beginning to think that my motherboard may have had its last day but I am unsure.

    My specs are as follows

Gigabyte GA-AB350M-D3H (all the info I have from physically looking at it) AMD Ryzen 15 1400 quad core 3.2Mhz 16GB ram Radeon RX560 (being replaced imminently)

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Motherboard

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

I currently have a RX 5700 XT and a Ryzen 5 3600. Everyone is recommending me to get the B450 Tomahawk Max mobo but it isn't for sale in the US, and to be honest, the impatience is starting to kick in. How big is the risk of getting a standard B450 Tomahawk to pair with my R5 3600? Will there be guaranteed issues? Should I buy another mobo instead? Guidance would be appreciated.

Rear audio only works when there is something connected to the front

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 08:46 AM PDT

    Win10

    MOBO: Gigabyte H310M M.2

    Headset: Logitech G230

Sorry for the double post, I thought I would be able to add a screenshot =( I'll get a link

Edit: For now the back panel gives sound by tricking the PC into thinking it is the front panel (?) By enabling front detection on the realtek software, I got sound from the back even though it shows as connected to the front. But the back mic plug still doesn't work, in fact, the back panel still is not being identified, it just works off of the front panel, for some reason.

PC is 3 months old, always used headset on the rear audio jacks. Today, I was watching videos and installing PUBG Lite (might be related?) when the audio suddenly stopped working, microphone too. Plugging it back in, still didn't work, but some times audio would return for 1-2 seconds and stop again.

On device manager, the headset and mic were not being detected, so I tested with my earphones, it also wasn't detected. Troubleshooting said the ports were working. On the front jack, both were working fine (mic and audio for both the headset and the earphones)

At some point I decided to test both jacks at the same time, and to my surprise, as long as there was something plugged into the front jack, the rear audio would work just fine (not the mic tho), swapped around the headsets and this trick still worked. As soon as I remove the device from the front jack, the rear device stops being detected.

So, I'm lost on whether this is a hardware/MOBO issue, driver issue, something broken after I installed a new software (Unfortunately I still don't have backups to restore to), or something else. Hopefully this is enough info, thank you!

    It's done! X99 plus 1080 for $1000

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 01:40 PM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/3OwTvDO.jpg

I got the Deepcool Matrexx 70 which is the first case I haven't had to modify to mount anything or fit a large PSU into. I also didn't even have to use a flashlight! There are a lot of features they don't advertize:

    • Glass PSU shroud

    • Vertical GPU mount

    • 4 SSD slots

    • Removeable/movable HDD tray

    • SSI-CEB support

    • twin 360mm radiator support

    • dust filters on the bottom and the front

    • the entire front fan mount comes off to make fans easy to install

    • you can fit so many cables in this thing just wow

I seriously recommend this case over anything with a similar boxy glassy style. $80 without 3x RGB fans, $100 with. Very full of other features and for a great price.

    Parts and prices:

    i7 5820K - $100

    Gigabyte GA-x99 UD3 - $100

    16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 - $100

    MSI GTX 1080 (Blower) - $299

    2x PNY CS900 120GB - $40

    Corsair RM750X - $70

    2x Seagate 1TB 7200 - $100

    DEEPCOOL Matrexx 70 - $100

DEEPCOOL Captain 360 EX Gamer Storm - $100

    upHere 6-fan RGB kit - $35

I don't really care about NVME, there's no benefit in my personal use case so the price premium is not worth it to me. I can always upgrade later.

I've got a Seagate Compute 4TB on the way that I paid $75 for, but it hasn't arrived so it was not counted.

I plan to do dual 1080s (this is a workstation, NOT a gaming PC) because I do a LOT of work with Blender, GIMP, and video rendering, plus I stream from time to time.

I also plan to upgrade the motherboard to an ASUS Sabertooth X99 and get an i7 6950X and a dummy high amount of RAM or something later down the line when I have the money to do so.

I don't think I could have gotten better performance for the money. I was originally gonna do an i5 9400KF but I'm glad I didn't because the 5820K thrashes it for a lower price.

Usb bios flashback, how does it work?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:16 AM PDT

With the help of a member of lovely reddit, I've bought myself a msi b450 gaming plus edition motherboard with a ryzen 5 3600 and I believe I'll have to do the USB bios update prior to the processor being recognised.

However this is all new to me and was wondering do I just have to flash the latest bios from https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450-GAMING-PLUS

Or is there a specific bios I need to flash to make it compatible?

It should all be arriving tomorrow so just trying to get everything ready so there's minimal messing around tomorrow.

    Thanks

Gifted a PC, Told it needs work, Im a noob

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 06:38 AM PDT

    Hey Yall.

To start off, I dont know shit about shit. However I am a quick learner and I love to tinker with shit. My brother gifted me his old PC however he told me it needs a new "motherboard".

So naturally I assumed I would have to take it apart. Which I did, very carefully, and now it's all over my desk. After taking it apart piece by piece and googling shit It seems I have these components inside.

    • AMD FX-8320E 3.2 GHz 8-Core Processor • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler • Seagate BarraCuda 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive • EVGA BQ 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply • Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard • Crucial Ballistix Sport 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1600 Memory • Intel 540s 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive • Asus Radeon R9 290 4 GB DirectCU II Video Card • Whole bunch of small fans • . 100000 cords/wires • Big frame all the parts were inside

OKAY. So I dont know what any of these things actually are apart from some quick readings that gave me a rundown. So apparently I need a new motherboard, cool, but are these other parts worth a damn? I think its an older PC, although I'm not sure.

How should I go about selecting a motherboard? and/or new parts based off what's here.

I don't game but now that I have this Im looking to start with some badass PC games. Im also looking to use it for programs im learning in school like ArcGIS.

TL;DR: I got this computer from my brother, it needs new parts, Idk if I have to replace other things as a result. Perhaps its too old? I want to use it for gaming/school.

Heard a spark and a little bit of smoke started coming out. New build first time turning on

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:54 AM PDT

Hi everyone, the power supply I had bought came with wires that were too short so I tried to use wires from a different power supply ( I now know I shouldn't have done that). When I turned it on, I heard a spark and a little bit of smoke came out from the mobo close to where my aio cooler is and I quickly turned the power supply off. I'd say it was on for about 3 seconds.

I quickly searched and understood that I made a huge mistake mixing power supply cables so I replaced all the cables to the original power supply ones. I tried it again and everything turned on and is working perfectly now.

Do I still need to do something about my motherboard? Do I have to replace it? Everything seems to be working fine? Please help.

First PC, am I bottlenecking it?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:59 AM PDT

Warning: On mobile, sorry for formatting

Built my first pc and it's been running smooth for the past month but I'm not the most knowledgeable with computers in terms of software or overclocking. I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600x, Asrock Steel Legend B450M, an RTX 2060, and 16gb of Corsair ram at 3200mhz. I can run most games at 144+ fps at 1440 but was wondering if any of my components are holding back another like if I should use faster ram or a better mobo. Any advice is appreciated thank you!

    PC damaged in flood

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:33 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I figured it's probably be the best. I had a dual PC setup and was using one for gaming and the other one just for watching streams. Unfortunately a few weeks ago my basement flooded and my PC's we're on the ground.

My gaming PC will not turn on at all. I've tried different power cords and turning the power switch on and off. I was wondering if anyone knew of any quick fixes, or if there's a chance the PC won't turn on due to not being plugged in for weeks.

My other PC has been working completely fine. The flooding didn't seem that deep but I'm not sure what damage it could have caused.

Just looking for any recommendations or quick fixes anyone would have. Thanks.

    Ryzen 2700 + cheap B450 board, OR Ryzen 3600 + expensive X570 board?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:17 PM PDT

I'm working on my next build, and I really want the 3600. The only chipset that works out of the box with zen 2 is X570. Pretty much all X570 boards are $200 and up, and there is only one for MAtx which is $220. This is really pushing my budget, and then I thought I could just get last gen Ryzen 7 and be good for a cheaper b450 board and get some extra features with it like WiFi. Do you think it would be worth it to get the 7 and save $200? I don't plan on upgrading again for a pretty long time so idk if the 2700 will be viable down the road.

    Thanks

Build help: my first time in 19 years - would appreciate a second set of eyes

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:11 PM PDT

it's been almost twenty years since I pseudo regularly built PCs for myself, family members and my dorm mates at college -- I've been reading, lurking and researching for the last few weeks as I prepare to pull the trigger on a new build.

considering how long it has been I would really appreciate a second set of eyes

    General

    • am I missing any obvious compatibility/stability issues, e.g. was I super dumb and put the wrong chipsets together...
    • Re: $ balancing parts: do you think it's well balanced?
      • I didn't really want to spring for the 2080ti as I know it's a horrible $/perf ratio but I've fallen in love with the Samsung so I don't feel like I have much of a choice basically 4k etc etc.

    Cooling/noise

    • I'm aiming to keep this thing as quiet as possible and have slight +ve pressure
      • hence the aftermarket fans... wrong choice? pointless purchase? not enough?
      • top and rear = exhaust, front and bottom = intake
        • Intake: Front = 2x140mm + Bottom = 2x140mm = 238 CFM
        • Exhaust: Top = 2x 140mm + Rear = 1x140mm = 178.5 CFM
      • Do you think I need all these fans or can I cut e.g. 1 from intake and 1 from exhaust ?
    • my guess is the PSU is a little overkill but I'm hoping that leads to the fan spinning up less aggressively

    Aesthetics

    • My desk is a 70x30 sit stand; bamboo desk, white frame
    • I'm worried this build is going to look pretty horrible - I'm going for a white/black vibe - e.g. my speakers are white - any advice on RGB, lighting, or mod cable kits...
      • e.g. would you get the white modcable kit?

Deeply appreciative of any suggestions or feedback.

    Main uses

    • email ;)
    • gaming, music editing, VR in a few months

    So with all that said:

EDIT: swapped out the mobo after folks pointed out I'd originally picked a mini-atx board :)

I need help improving my current PC.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT

My PC was built by a friend around 6 years ago and has not had any upgrades since. He did a great job, despite only spending around $450 for the whole set up, but it is definitely time to upgrade the PC. I am not that great with hardware, and really only know the bare minimum about it. Here are my specs from the "system" window in Windows.

    Edition: Windows 7 Ultimate

Processor: AMD A10-7850K APU with Radeon(TM) R7 Graphics 3.70 GHz

    RAM: 8GB (7.42 GB usable)

    System Type: 64-bit

    Manufacturer: ASRock

    Motherboard: FM2A75M Pro4+

What would you advise to upgrade? Again I must stress, I know only the bare minimum about hardware, so please keep that in mind. My computer used to be able to run Overwatch no problem a few years ago, but a few days ago I tried playing and even on the lowest settings it maybe gave me 10 fps.

RTX 2070 Super dedicated GPU memory

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 02:59 PM PDT

My gpu benchmarks are not as high as what they should be according to userbenchmark. According to Task manager my GPU never seems to use more than about 2.5gb of dedicated GPU memory (when running games or benchmarks), should this be higher?

Building my first $5000 rig. Need some inputs.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 02:58 PM PDT

I'm about to order this gaming rig: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6qHTvn. Yep, it's more a (audiophile) media machine than a gaming rig, which I'll also be using for productive work. Here's a quick part list:

i9 9900K with a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 air cooler, Z390 Aorus Ultra, 32 gigs of 4000 DDR4 ram in dual channel, 12TB storage (if you're wondering, the reason for this amount of storage is explained later), Zotac 2070 Super 8GB, 850W Seasonic PSU (80+ Ti) packaged in a be quiet! dark base pro 900r2 full tower case.

Here's some stuff I need suggestions about:

    1. Should I liquid cool it? I'm pretty much against liquid cooling after reading horror stories of people frying their builds due to internal liquid spillage, and the cooler I've selected has a max TDP of 250W, which should be able to handle a slight overclock if I decide to in the future.
    2. Should I go with a slower RAM and upgrade the motherboard instead? If yes, what's a good middle ground without any kind of noticeable performance hit? Currently, 3200MHz ram is half the price of the 4000MHz ram I selected, but I'm just future proofing my build, so I went with the 4000 kit.
    3. Should I change the thermal paste? I'm not going to liquid metal it, just need something that's good AND lasts long. It's okay if it's expensive.
    4. Like I said, I'm going with a 2070 Super, which will hopefully drive the monitor at native resolution in all games, at 30fps or more at least (monitor is selected). Should I go with the 5700X instead? What will I gain or loose other than Ray Tracing?
    5. I know this is a niche question, but does anyone have any idea for a better internal Blu-Ray drive? (Selected drive: Pioneer 209DBK).
    6. Another niche question: Better sound card? I don't need a 5.1 or 7.1 channel sound card, just asking if anyone knows something better than the Creative Sound Blaster AE-7 that I've selected.
    7. Last question: I've selected a Seasonic Focus+ Platinum 850W PSU. Is there a better one? I've read that Seasonic makes their own PSUs, and they're excellent units, hence the reason for selecting this one.

My current clunky PC will probably be turning into an HTPC, since that is all it's good for now. I use my PC for at least 6-7 years after building, which is why you'll find other extraneous stuff if you check this build on PCPartpicker. Here's why I need that amount of storage: A 2TB nvme storage for all the immediate applications and files I need, a 4TB SATA SSD for all my Virtual Machines, and a 6TB spinning storage for all my games and documents, and I've also kept a total of 12TB external storage to store data from all of my ripped optical disks (I do have quite a lot of them), and all my important stuff.

I've invested a lot of patience in saving up money for this build, which is why I really don't want anything to go wrong with my hard earned funds. If this seems like an over-the-top build, it's because I'm hoping I don't have to open it once it's built for at least the next 4-5 years to upgrade stuff. I've been on this sub for quite a while and trust the people here, since they actually seem to know what they're talking about, which is why I posted this. I apologise if this is a long post.

Note: If you look at the build on PCPartpicker, it goes a little above $6600, I'm aware of it. The title says $5000 because that's what the main/important parts cost.

EDIT: Updated CPU, mobo, Storage, keeping stock AMD fan, selected 2080 Super. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/g9LgYT
