Just got my first new windows machine in over in almost 10 years... what are some must-install free apps?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:03 PM PDT

I literally have not touched a windows machine since 2009 and i have no idea what apps i need, can someone help me out with the basics?

    Here are some I have installed already;

    1. Chrome
    2. AVG antivirus
    3. Malwarebytes
    4. WinZip
    5. LibreOffice (O365 alternative)

This machine is for my home office and I don't plan on doing much with is. Everything I need is inside Google suite so its all web-based so no need for dropbox or anything either... but what are some other basic things I should have?

(Urgent) Need to find TimeStamp for Inactive user through AD

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:04 PM PDT

Long story short, there is a lawsuit and we need to find a old user's timestamp of everytime he logged into his domain account.

We do not have the PC that the user used previously, as IT was a very long time. ( otherwise we wouldve used the event viewer)

We do however, have users Active Directory account which we never disabled. Is there any way we can find out how many times he logged in and out through AD?

Please, any help would be greatful.

    Intel Virtualization keeps turning off

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:53 PM PDT

So as title says this started after I reinstalled Windows. I bought laptop with Windows already installed but I later decided to reinstall it. I've done this already on other computers so there was no problem. After Windows was installed I was installing some programs that I needed including Virtual Box which after installation requires reboot. After I rebooted my computer and tried to run virtual machine it said that virtualization is no supported which was weird because it was working fine before reinstallation so I downloaded Intel Identification Utility which told me that it's not supported on my CPU. Then I shut down my computer and I went to BIOS where it said that virtualization is enabled. So I just rebooted it once more and still the same thing about virtualization not being supported. I found out that by turning it off and the back on it would work and even Identification Utility would say that it's supported so have been doing it this way whenever it turned off (said that it's not supported). It hasn't been too big of a problem until now. I downloaded Android Studio and couldn't install Intel HAXM because of this. It said that virtualization is disabled in my BIOS so I couldn't use Android virtual machine while I could use Virtual Box or VM Ware just fine. How can I fix this?

    Edge Chromium Experience

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 08:20 AM PDT

I was searching for all ways to salvage what is left of my dying laptop battery and since Chrome is such a big battery hog, i decided to switch to alternatives. I wasn't much impressed with Firefox and I always preferred the Chromium engine so decided to test out the Edgium.

I was pleasantly surprised, it is less resource hungry than Chrome and works just fine. Though some of the features are missing but this is definitely a positive start.

Any way to prevent Windows 10 Home from replacing my touchpad driver after every major update?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 07:50 PM PDT

Every time a major Windows update is installed the specific touchpad driver I have installed is replaced. The new driver will disable the 2 and 3-finger click actions as well as 2-finger scrolling. It's happened several times now and basically makes my PC unusable until I spend 15 minutes reinstalling the old driver and re-configuring the multi touch settings.

I've tried disabling automatic driver downloads which seemed to prevent this from happening during normal updates but still always occurs with a major update. Is there any way to stop this? It is extremely infuriating.

Why does my windows lag so much?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 07:59 AM PDT

Hey, my laptop has an intel core i5 cpu along with 8gigs of ram. I have the latest version of Windows installed with updates.

But GOD my windows lags so much, even in the smallest of tasks, from booting up to operations, it's very laggy. Sometimes it works fine, but most of the times, it's laggy.

Previously i had the last year's October update, that was laggy as well. Every windows 10 version i tried, it's the same issue.

I don't think it's my pc configuration that is to blame here, core i5 isn't that bad of a chipset, no matter the generation.

So what are you experiences? Any solution?

how to unassign or reassign the "Print Screen" button, which uses windows built in screenshot manager, so that it can be reassigned to another program?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 08:01 AM PDT

i'd like to assign the button to another program rather than having it assigned to the built in windows screenshot manager – how do I go about unasigning it away from the built in windows screenshot manager? Is the only way to do this by editing the rigistry or is there another way? If the only way is using the registery I'm asking for instructions on how to edit the registry or add a key to the registry that will release control of the print screen button so that I can assign it to different program instead

Dx11 Hardware Composed FLIP Multi-Monitor issue

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:32 AM PDT

First before all: I'm sorry if this does not belong in this sub.

    Hello lads and laddies,

Currently i'm working with some D3D11 and DXGI stuff.

The software was previously using exclusive fullscreen mode and window modes using the regular DXGI_SWAP_EFFECT_DISCARD now i wanted to port the application towards using DXGI_SWAP_EFFECT_FLIP_DISCARD for a smoother TAB-experience.

It all worked fine most of the time. The application is running using Hardware composed FLIP (HC FLIP) (as per PresentMon) but as soon as i startup OpenBroadcaster Studio on my second monitor, the app switches to FLIP presentation which leads to a very high latency + stuttering and thus bad experience. (40ms opposed to 2-3ms with HC FLIP)

The Swapchain is created with DXGI_SWAP_CHAIN_FLAG_ALLOW_TEARING.

The main Monitor M1 that runs the screen-filling Dx11 application is running with 144Hz (g-sync) and the second monitor M2, where OBS is running, runs at 60Hz.

It works fine while other applications are running. E.g. Chrome running a HW accelerated Video on M2 does not introduce the issue.

The Application on M2 never overlaps with M1 and OBS uses a Gamecapture source (tried with Monitor and Window, same results).

I don't understand why the application suddenly get knocked out of the HC FLIP into the regular FLIP presentation.

Is there any way to prevent it / work around the issue? (while staying in borderless window FLIP-Model)

Different screen modes for different desktops in Windows 10?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 10:05 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have a 2 monitor (main and a side) setup and I utilize 2 desktops in Windows 10, one for studying and other for slacking off. While I'm studying, I'm using both of the monitors however, while I'm gaming etc. I'm only using the main monitor. To conserve some energy (whether it's significant or not), I manually switch to single monitor mode and turn off the side monitor when I don't need it but it's kinda time consuming to do that multiple times in a day. Also, when I switch to single monitor, all the apps located at the side monitor swaps back to main one and I have to move them manually. So I was wondering if I can keep 2 different screen settings for the desktops, single monitor for Desktop 1 and multiple for the Desktop 2.

    Any help is appreciated.

A script to add some conveniences to the "Save As" dialog

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 05:39 AM PDT

I've had a script that makes saving stuff an easier experience for me for a while; some other people saw it and liked it, so I figured I'd offer it up here... Introducing "SaveAsBuddy":

This is an autoHotkey script, it runs in the background and watches for the 'Save As' dialog box. When it detects a 'Save As', the script runs some checks & replacements on the default filename. Its GUI will pop-up next to the 'Save As' box (without stealing focus) to tell you what it did and show its options.

    Screenshot: https://imgur.com/ejOFfR1

What the script can do so far (You can set any or all of these as options):

    • Checks if a file that has the same name already exists and changes the name (by adding a number) to prevent a collision. Chrome does this by default and I wanted to apply that effect to everything.

    • The ability to set a maximum name length. Some apps will just go crazy on the default names, in some cases making them so long explorer won't be able to handle the file properly if it's deep in a folder tree. This lets you do an intelligent truncation of super long names.

    • Prefix/affix custom text to the name. For when I want to group a bunch of saves together but don't want to give them a folder... You can put %DATE% and %TIME% in these boxes to have a timestamp added to the file name.

    • Invalid character check. Most apps are good about not sticking invalid chars in their default names, but not all. You can also edit the allowed characters in the script to remove crap like emoji's showing up in filenames.

Any suggestions/improvements are welcome: Anything else people want the save as dialog to do, and if anyone knows a good way to match & extract from GTK/java versions of the save as dialog.

    Get the script:

*As raw source on pastebin: https://pastebin.com/QYHtBQEU
*As a .zip file containing the script & a compiled .exe (for running without installing autoHotKey): https://mega.nz/#!dUIzhA5b!_4IWj5KmKquzCIlBvopJmFCmiNWt9zJy_tk6AL4grRM

When run, it will pop up its GUI; set the options you want then hit "Dismiss" to set it waiting in the tray. The command line option -hide can be used if you want to put it in your start-up group and have it automatically go to the tray.

Help: Mac user sent me files with no extension but I can't open them on my PC

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 10:31 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. A new client sent me files to do a catalog layout, but I can't open the files on my Windows PC. It shows up with no extension and the file type just says "file". I tried adding my own extension after it by renaming the file as "file-name.jpg" I also tried .png, .tif, .psd, .zip but I still can't open the file.

He said he never had this problem before and I found out he uses macbook.

Is there anyway for me to open the file or is it only accessible for mac users?

    Thanks in advance

Edit: Not solved, but the client decided to hire another designer. He said when he sent it to the other person ( who also happened to use mac), they were able to open it fine. He said it was jpeg files, which is weird because I wasn't able to open it as jpeg. Thanks for all the advice though.

Hope it is not to much to ask, If you need me to be more convincing, I can provide more details.

Will installing a secondary drive with windows installed affect startup?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:23 AM PDT

I have a used SSD which come with my new laptop i bought around 3 months ago, but i swapped out the SSD for a Samsung one which is faster. And now i want to put it back into my laptop 2nd drive bay, however before i swapped out the old SSD i forget to format it clean hence Windows 10 is still install on the drive.

Will putting it back onto the 2nd drive bay affect the startup, even if i have it boot after my main drive?

If it is not possible to not affect startup, how can i format it without the need to spend extras buck for stupid one-time use external SSD readers?
