MSI GS65 with GTX 1070 vs Razer Blade 15 with RTX 2060 Posted: 06 Jul 2019 03:04 AM PDT In the market for a slim gaming/productivity laptop. Through many hours of research I've narrowed it down to the older MSI GS65 with a 1070 (£1598) or the 2019 Razer Blade 15 with a 2060 (£1899). The RTX 2060 is only marginally weaker than the older 1070, probably not noticeable, but the MSI is a good deal cheaper. I've heard that the RTX models aren't worth it, especially at 1080p and on a 2060. That said, I think the Razer is a much better built and better looking machine, plus it has a newer CPU and double the SSD space. Any thoughts? Posted: 06 Jul 2019 03:00 AM PDT Hi, I just found out for this subreddit so I thought it would be a good idea to ask, what laptop should I buy for around 80-150€. I was thinking of buying a Lenovo T420 but I'm still not sure if that is a good idea. I would like to get some good suggestions on laptops that have at least: CPU clocked at 2 or higher GHz 4GB of ram or higher 250GB of storage or more Can at least play eSports titles (CSGO, Rocket League of Legends etc.) and YouTube videos smoothly Monitor at least 1336x768 or higher resolution. Thank you for your response. [link] [comments] |

Laptop Bricked - Need a new one for school <$1,700 USA Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:25 PM PDT Redditors of /r/suggestalaptop, I'm reaching out for help finding a decent laptop. I'm going back to school and spent ~$1,000 on a refurbished HP Elitebook in January from amazon. Today it bricked, and I have no recourse with a warranty. I'm so disappointed because I treated that laptop so well. I need a new laptop ASAP, preferably one with a warranty because now I'm afraid not to have one. * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* USA, 1,700 or less * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Good Battery Life is a must, other than that best specifications for the money. I'm not into 2 in 1 form factor. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Not at all * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 15.6 inches or higher * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* No special programs but I do want to be able to hook it up to TWO 28" monitors at the same time (extend the screen onto them) * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* No Gaming, but would be willing to pay higher end of budget for a good processor. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Preferences: Ø Reliable Quality Ø No touchscreen (but I could deal with it, its just not a selling point for me) Ø SSD is a must Ø At least 1 TB storage * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* Looking for something that's likely to last at least 2 years, have decent storage space and preferably has side venting to keep it cool. I don't care if its an absolute brick if its a good laptop. Thank you for your guidance! plan-on-it [link] [comments] |
What do you think would be a better choice? This year's Dell G7 laptop? Or last year's? Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:17 PM PDT I am a video editor, occasionally play video games, and will be off to college soon, so I figured I'd buy a laptop. I like Dell's gaming laptops. They seem to be pretty good budget options without looking "gamery". I'm thinking of getting a Dell G7 but I can't decide whether I should get this year's model or last year's. The specific configuration of laptop I plan on getting is an i7 with 16gb (may go with 8 to save some dollars). The graphics card doesn't particularly matter to me to be honest. I don't need anything too crazy. But for the sake of it, the 2018 Dell comes with a 1060, while the 2019 comes with a 1660 ti. Both cost about $1100-$1200. I don't know I can't decide. :/ Edit* Heres the helpful form: Budget: I guess $1200 2 in 1 from factor: prefer a normal laptop How important is weight and thinness?: Eh, I don't mind a larger laptop, but thinness is nice Which OS: Windows Screen size: I find 15 inches to be a good sweet spot for me Specific requirements: not really. I mean, I'm looking for a machine that can do video editing and some gaming, but I don't know if that's a "special requirement". Finishing thoughts: I think the post is pretty straight forward. Other suggestions are appreciated. [link] [comments] |

$1200-$1800 Laptop for College Posted: 06 Jul 2019 01:36 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** My total budget is around $1800 but I'd prefer to stay closer to $1200-$1600 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I want to get a 2 in 1 as I prefer the design and may use it for outside college. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Preferably not extremely heavy and I'd like it to be thin if it's a 2 in 1 * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** At least 15 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? At what settings and FPS do you want?** The most I'd probably play is Minecraft in terms of demand * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build, backlit and good keyboard * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Mainly I want a laptop for on the go that will give me a few years of use in a computer science major [link] [comments] |

Purchased new Dell Inspiron 15 5575 w/AMD Ryzen 5 2500U for $319.20 USD today Posted: 05 Jul 2019 02:50 PM PDT I just bought this laptop today. At the price I think it is a great deal. If anyone is interested, its at this price only today at Fry's Electronics, in-store only. Fry's has its reg price @ $599.99, sale price this week @ $439.98, on promo code price today for $399.00, and there is an additional 20% off purchases over 199$ today (in-store only). To get the promo code price and the 20% off, you have to be on their email list, which is free. The total price before tax came out to $319.20 USD. Dell i5575-A217SLV-PUS 15.6" FHD Laptop With AMD Ryzen 5 2500U Processor, 8GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive, Windows 10https://www.frys.com/product/9922656?nearbyStoreName=false&site=sunlanding063019 Also purchased this 512 Gb NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD from Amazon for $59.99 USD a week ago, installed it today and was very impressed. I'm getting consistent seq q32t1 read speed of 3185+ MB/s and write speed of 2115+ MB/s. It took me a while to figure out how to boot from it automatically while using the 1Tb hdd as a storage drive, but so worth it. 10/10 would do it again. Also, I am installing 2x8gb Pacific Sun 2666MHz DDR4 SO DIMM. Does anyone think 32gb vs. the 16gb I'm installing would help performance at all? Or will the difference be negligible because my processor is older/ on the slower end? [link] [comments] |

A laptop with industrial-level sturdiness and consumer-level specifications Posted: 05 Jul 2019 05:53 PM PDT I am the absolute worst with my laptops. I drop them, I expose them to heat unnecessarily, I take them on dangerous trips, and I fall asleep with them still running on my lap. I need to get a device that I can have for years on end without having to get a repairman in. Because of this, I've been trying to look into more blastproof models, but I can't seem to figure out the right combination of terms to get what I'm after. The hardy laptops I've found online all seem to have had their specs built around the assumption that I am using this device so I can safely make spreadsheets on an oil rig, rather than because I'm a fuckin' stupid idiot that just wants to have a normal-people laptop experience. Some don't appear to have dedicated graphics cards, since you don't need those in a warzone. Many are at low and/or nonstandard resolutions I would more associate with machines from the late 90s, since nobody is going to be using their volcano-research-center-field-computer to do anything besides read and write text. All of them have promotional videos where the audio is really, really loud. I'm not even sure how to look for what I want, here. Thank you for the attention. Total budget and country of purchase: Let's call it ~$1800 US. More can be fine, if that's necessary. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I need to be able to bludgeon somebody with this device and get away with it unscathed. A 2-in-1 design seems interesting, but it isn't a high priority, and probably would just be an opportunity to break hinges. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm inevitably going to get a laptop that weighs more than a baby, so I'm not too concerned, but I would still happily shave off an inch of space from the machine's height if I could do so without compromising structural integrity. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm a Windows user, but dual booting isn't that hard. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd say at least 11 inches, probably. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing is my trade and video games are my hobby, but I'm not expecting to find a device that would let me do those things here. I have my desktop for that. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mostly play Paradox Grand Strategy games, which are relatively CPU intensive. Besides that, the games I would play would be pretty lightweight. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is my raison d'etre at the moment. As for touch screens and touchpads, I've noticed that these industrial laptops tend to have resistive screens instead of capacitive, so you can keep your lumberjack-gloves on in use. If for some reason there exists one of these devices with capacitive input, I'm all for hearing about it. Or resistive is fine too. Or none at all. Anything's good. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If the machine was also easily upgradeable, that would be cool, too, since I could then celebrate my invincible device by keeping it running for the rest of my natural life. It shall be immortal, and sire many tough tablet children. That's the lowest-priority issue I can think of, though. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jul 2019 05:48 PM PDT Hi. Looking to buy a laptop.
Of course CPU, RAM etc. is important. But it's not very hard to find laptops with good enough performance, so I wanted to see what you would recommend given my pet peeve on keyboards. It should handle Chrome w/10 tabs open (Twitch, Youtube etc.) and a 1080p H264 video played in VLC at the same time etc. I don't see Battery life as very important as long as it can last for like 2 hours. Any gaming would be older games like Fallout NV or less resource heavy games like Heartstone. I have a PC that I can play the newer games on. This laptop will be used to have something to code on when I'm not at home, for the most part. Other than that, I'll be consuming Netflix, HBO and Youtube etc. [link] [comments] |
Thunderbolt 3: Are they the future? Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:29 AM PDT So I am on the market for a new laptop. But the ones which have better specs in terms of CPU and other stuff( for eg. Oryx Pro from System 76) do not come with a Thunderbolt 3 port. So my question is two part: How essential are Thunderbolt 3 ports in today's context? Do you think they are gonna be indispensable in 5-6 years' time, which is approx. the least time I wanna this new laptop to last? Also suggest some alternatives with similar specs(9th gen iCore, 16-32GB RAM, Nvidia RTX, M.2 PCle NVMe, Linux support) if you know of any. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
