How easy/difficult do you find using nnn?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:12 AM PDT

    Hi r/linux4noobs,

Author of terminal file manager nnn here. I believe there are some terminal enthusiasts among you and I would love to know how easy or difficult you find using the tool.

A little bit of background on this. I have tried to write nnn in such a way that it's simple to use (no commands and as few as 7 keys to handle the basic navigation and functionality) with an easy learning curve. One of the driving goals has been to help introduce users who are not accustomed to the terminal or aren't sure how productive it can be in certain workflows to the ways of the terminal. nnn is designed to unfold in stages... e.g., only when the user is ready (s)he can edit his/her rc file and add a few configurations to play around with. The defaults are sensible enough so they work without any issues on a generic system. While nnn is extremely hackable, the priority is next to being simple and friendly.

I would like to know how much I have achieved so far. I would also love to have some feedback, suggestions, areas of improvement which can make it a more useful and newbie-friendly utility.

    Many thanks in advance!

Are there any distros with a 3D desktop environment?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:34 AM PDT

Kind of new to Linux and loving it so far, but the amount of freedom got me wondering if a childhood dream I had could come true. Does a desktop environment that's a 3-dimensional "room" exist? And if not, how difficult would it be to make one?

    Thanks in advance

Can someone explain how this works?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:46 PM PDT

Ok so for some reason after a power failure, like the power goes out briefly, my Linux server doesn't restart up correctly. Like half of the stuff starts up and the other half starts and stops over and over again. So the only way I have gotten it to work after this is making a USB boot installer for Linux Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS, the version that I am on, and going into try Linux. I look at all the drives and then restart and now it starts up correctly.

I got no ideas why this would make it work but I would like to know. I would also like to know maybe why my server does this after a power failure if you have any ideas.

My laptop is a hot mess right now

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:47 AM PDT

I'm running Linux Mint 19 Tara on a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop.
As the name implies, my laptop is not in a good state at all. It boots up and can log into a session, but almost none of the apps I use on a daily basis work. On top of that, I can't install any security updates. Here are the errors I get when trying to run some apps:

How to install lubuntu alongside windows 10 and current ubuntu

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:27 AM PDT

I read a few posts answering this question or very similar questions but I didn't fully understand. Can I install lubuntu, without messing up the two OS's I have now and still be able to choose which I boot into(someone said the last install controls grub?)

I have a moderate laptop but windows has lots of issues and is very slow so I switched to Ubuntu, but now I ran out of space and want to install and develop on unity3d and blender so I figured I'd grab a lightweight lubuntu and use it there. I am thinking the light weight OS will result in a better time working in unity.

Does any of this not make sense can anyone help or share tips?

Cheat sheet for permissions on linux?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:41 AM PDT

I was using Manjaro and they have something really useful in which you right click a folder, and there is a gui option to change the permissions for that folder.

I am now using Opensuse and they don't have that. Is there any good, simple resource that a new user like me can use to quickly learn how to set permissions through the console?

    Also change ownership and stuff.

How to forward a port to a VM within proxmox

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:51 AM PDT

I am trying out proxmox for the first time this week, with the purpose of (for now) hosting a minecraft server for my friends and myself. For some reason when i forward port 25565 it is not showing up on canyouseeme, and when I connect with minecraft it sometimes says "connection refused" and sometimes "timed out" with a lengthy string beforehands (IO.bitty). I can join and play my server over lan. The distro I am using is antiX as ubuntu and ubuntu server and a few others werent installing properly.

Edit: using r410 with e5630 and 16gb ram

New SSD, how do I smartest arrange software setup?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:51 AM PDT

Just got a new 1tb SSD for my workstation. I have Ubuntu on my laptop. I want to install a lot of software on my workstation like Unreal Engine, 3D modeling and Rendering software etc in windows 10. But I really like linux for normal everyday task when I'm not working with that particular software.

So do I install windows 10 on my SSD and allow 500gb and make a virtual machine for Zorian or Ubuntu for 200gb and then make a partition for 300gb for sharing?

Or do I install Zorian since it comes with wine and make a virtual machine with 500gb space for win10 and a partition to sharing for 300gb?

What is best or do you have a better Idea? I'm not dual booting.

Why is 127.0.0.53 a nameserver for my ubuntu ?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:33 PM PDT

When I run netstat, I get

    127.0.0.53:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 723/systemd-resolve

So what is the actual address of the DNS server that is answering my DNS requests? 127.0.0.53 is just another IP for my localhost.

Diagnose audio cutting out pop_os 19.04

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:56 AM PDT

I installed pop_os yesterday, everything was fine.

    Today I installed: - Lutris - wine dependencies for d9vk - d9vk - cs:go - path of exile - hearthstone

And something messed up my audio. I can play audio just fine, but it will cut out for half a second, than work for 10 seconds, rinse and repeat. Please help, it is driving me nuts!!

Hardware: - Intel audio on a dell vostro 5471

Edit: Fixed by running sudo apt autoremove libasound2-plugins, then restarting, and than launching the default pop session (as I'm using kde) and than running sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop again.

Edit 2: Running games in dxvk with lutris causes the issue. I just uninstalled lutris alltogether after this.

    Handbrake on Ubuntu Server

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:43 AM PDT

I am running a simple home server using Ubuntu Server 18.04, this machine is mainly running Plex. I'm hoping I can run Handbrake on it as well but I can't find anything useful about it online. I was hoping I could use your collective knowledge to help me. Has anyone had handbrake running on a headless system before? Do you know of any useful online resources to help me with this? Are there any pros and cons to this? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Bluetoothctl fails to pair or connect.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:02 AM PDT

I am using Manjaro with i3 on the 5.2 kernel. I was following the Arch Wiki guide on Bluetooth, but I am having some issues.

I get this error whenever I try to pair:

[bluetooth]# pair 70:26:05:3C:4B:EA Attempting to pair with 70:26:05:3C:4B:EA Failed to pair: org.bluez.Error.AlreadyExists

If I then try to connect it, I have this issue:

[bluetooth]# connect 70:26:05:3C:4B:EA Attempting to connect to 70:26:05:3C:4B:EA Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed

What should I try to do?

    Safely updating remote servers

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:20 AM PDT

Having had to deal with a botched yum update via SSH because my internet connection failed, I understood that I need an update method which runs regardless if the parent process, i.e. my shell disconnected. Googling for it, no one seems to discuss this, so I suppose I'm asking how would you make the update process less prone to such interrupts?

I'm thinking a at or cron (i.e. installing updates every week) should do the trick, but maybe there's something better?
