1060 or better, 1070 would be great. 4 cores minimum but 6 would be awesome. 2 in 1 if possible.

    Anything like this exist?

Dissapointing UserBenchmark Results on new laptop. anything I can do?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:40 AM PDT

[UPDATE 3: PROBLEM SOLVED. CAUSE OF BAD BENCHMARK RESULTS WAS PRIMARILY DUE TO NOT USE MAX PERFORMANCE BATTERY PROFILE]

    . . . .

Just received my Acer Swift 1 today and went to run user benchmark on it.

Here are the results: UserBenchmarks: Game 12%, Desk 22%, Work 16%

It seems like the CPU and RAM both perform 20% worse than the their averages.

    Model Bench
CPU Intel Pentium Silver N5000 18.9%
GPU Intel UHD Graphics 605 3.1%
    SSD Micron_1100_MTFDDAV256TBN 256GB 63.9%
    RAM Unknown 2x4GB 18.7%
    MBD Acer Swift SF114-32

Is there anything I can do or will I not end up noticing it anyway? I am gonna use the laptop for browsing, note-taking and light productivity (programming).

Avg bench for Pentium Silver N5000: 38.5%

    . . . .

    UPDATE 1

Updated BIOS, Testing on highest performance mode and while charging: UserBenchmarks: Game 13%, Desk 40%, Work 22%

    Model Bench
CPU Intel Pentium Silver N5000 43.6%
GPU Intel UHD Graphics 605 3.4%
    SSD Micron_1100_MTFDDAV256TBN 256GB 69.3%
    RAM Unknown 2x4GB 26.6%
    MBD Acer Swift SF114-32

CPU and overall Performance is much better :) Phew I haven't used laptops in a long while so forgot about the battery saver options. Unfortunately RAM performance is still pretty bad. Avg ram bench is 40% but I don't know if I can trust that since UserBenchmark labels it as Unknown ram.

    . . . .

    UPDATE 2

Over-provisioned SSD 10% manually in Windows Disk Management because the Micron SSD software was giving errors every time I tried to use its over-provisioning tool. This has given a minor improvement to the SSD score. I think I'm done setting up the laptop now :)

    UserBenchmarks: Game 13%, Desk 40%, Work 22%

    Model Bench
CPU Intel Pentium Silver N5000 43.4%
GPU Intel UHD Graphics 605 3.4%
    SSD Micron_1100_MTFDDAV256TBN 256GB 71.1%
    RAM Unknown 2x4GB 26.8%
    MBD Acer Swift SF114-32

    . . . .

[UPDATE 3: PROBLEM SOLVED. CAUSE OF BAD BENCHMARK RESULTS WAS PRIMARILY DUE TO NOT USE MAX PERFORMANCE BATTERY PROFILE]

    XPS 13 Vs. Yoga 920

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:25 PM PDT

Hello. I am a student at a university. My current laptop is on its last knees. I currently have a really old HP Spectre. I am thinking about getting either an Dell XPS 13 or Lenovo Yoga 920. I was wonder how you feel about the these laptop. What should I go with? I need it to last minimum 5 years with 7/8 hours of battery. I will not be playing any games on there. Just homework, studying, Netflix, the basics, etc. I need it to be relatively quiet. No HDD, only SSD. Webcam is not a priority. TB3 is a must. I know there are issues with both laptops from readings few forums, but I would like to minimize as much issues with my new laptop as possible as it will be my life for a few years. If you have any better alternatives, please suggest it. I don't want to pay more than $800 without tax. I'm not rich at all, but I want to get solid quality.

    Lenovo Yoga 920 https://slickdeals.net/f/13268881-lenovo-yoga-920-2-in-1-13-9-fhd-ips-touch-i7-8550u-8gb-ddr4-256gb-pcie-ssd-thunderbolt-3-active-stylus-2-win10h-f-s-739-99

Dell XPS 13 https://slickdeals.net/f/13268155-dell-xps-13-9360-touch-laptop-1080p-ips-i5-8250u-8gb-ddr3-256gb-ssd-735-free-shipping?src=frontpage - I know this is expired, but this is the price I'm looking at.

    Choosing between performance and design

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:34 PM PDT

I'm looking for a 13" laptop for around $800 and I've narrowed it down to these 2:

    HP ProBook 430 G5

    Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UA

The most important spec difference is that the HP has an i5-8250U, and the Asus has an i5-7200U.

But what's just as important to me is the design. Overall the Asus looks so much better, and that's why i'm really considering it.

So my question is how big is the difference between the CPUs? Just for everyday usage, and also AutoCAD.

Why is there such a huge jump in price from laptops with 8GB RAM to 16GB?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:20 PM PDT

I need a new laptop and looking around there seems to be a huge gulf in prices when RAM is the only major change.

    E.g.

    Spec HP 250 G6 Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (2019) Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (2019)
    CPU i7 7500U i5 8265U i7 8565U
    RAM 8GB 16GB 16GB
    Storage 256 SSD 512 SSD 256 SSD
    Price EUR 560 EUR 778 EUR 828

I would prefer 16GB in my new laptop but didn't really want to spend over 700 and it's proving hard. Is it worth it to spend the extra couple of hundred?

New ASUS laptop making fan noises

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:05 PM PDT

    Hey there, fellow redditors.

As you could guess, I've got a problem: fans of my brand-new (bought yesterday) ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DT-AL209 (Ryzen 7 3750h with Vega 10, GTX1650) are making some weird fan noises: they are whistling (not quite loud, but nevertheless pretty noticeable) and cracking (also not quite loud). Had anyone encountered such problem on devices like this, and if yes, then how did you solve it? Is it worth visiting the service centre, or it isn't a warranty case, so it would be faster and better to fix it myself?

Also, there is another little question regarding this laptop: is CPU working temperature (active net surfing) of 50-60°C normal for that model? I heard it's cooling system isn't quite good, so that might not be a problem, just a consequence of the above mentioned. Should I change thermal paste, or it's alright the way it is?

In advance, thanks for your help.

Dell XPS 15 9570 battery not charging

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:04 PM PDT

For the past few days, I've had a problem with my 1 month old XPS 15. When I first got it, the battery was plugged in, but not charging, however after a BIOS update, everything seemed to work properly. Now, 1 month later, my battery seems to be stuck around the 90-95%, and in the bottom right it just says: 94% available (plugged in).

I checked the BIOS, and the adapter is recognized as 130W, and the battery health is excellent. I also used Dell Power Manager, and it also says that the battery is fully healthy, but it says: 94% available, plugged in not charging. I have tried to change the battery charging settings from Standard to Adaptive to Primarily AC usage, yet nothing changed.

This wouldn't bother me usually, as 90% of the time I use my laptop while it's plugged in, but lately I have been getting massive FPS drops in any games I play, and that's beyond annoying for such an expensive laptop, which should be running those games easily.

For reference, I have the i7 8750H with the 1050ti GPU, in case that helps.

Going abroad and I need some help.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:56 AM PDT

Hi all, here Eudald in need of some help. In a few weeks I'm going abroad but I would like to keep playing in my new place (I will be there for some months so I want a laptop I can get back home). I have been looking for a new laptop for some days but I just can't decide wich one is the best for me and I'm only like "wow this one looks cool" wich I know is not the best way to decide.

My ideal laptop would have this characteristics: being able to play LoL and APEX (for lets say 6 hours straight) and being silent (fuck my last HP, I couldn't go to the library with it) without costing lets say more than 500€. Any ideas?

    Thank you all in advance!!

    Asus with bad BIOS flash

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:23 AM PDT

A friend has an Asus laptop, Zenbook UX310UAK.

I'm not quite sure what happened, they said they were using it when it did some some sort of "flash update", all of a sudden they couldn't control the mouse, panicked and turned the machine off.
Now the machine turns on as soon as the mains is connected, fan spins but no display.

I believe that they've turned the laptop off during a BIOS update, and for lack of a better term, buggered it.

Is there a way for me to flash the BIOS with the machine in it's current state?

Laptop as desktop setup, any advice?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:43 AM PDT

I have decided to finally get serious about finding a new home for my desktop and use my laptop as my main computer. I am just curious if anybody has any advice on things they wish they had done from the start? Also wondering how everybody has their laptop set up? I plan to do an ultra wide screen monitor. I would love to have my laptop tucked away some place discreet, but I am worried about cooling it. I am find that MSI is a bit lacking in that department.

    Vant Laptops in Spain

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:33 AM PDT

[EDIT: The model number of n240wu seems to be common for other laptops with the same chassis, but I don't see parts.

I'm over on a trip to Europe and I got my hands on a Vant Moove 14 laptop but it has either a Spanish or Portuguese keyboard.. It doesn't seem like this company makes their own chassis. Does anyone know anything about them or where might be a good place to get a replacement keyboard?

The system is very modular and looks like it's pretty much made to be upgraded.
