Macbook Pro 13 2019 for programming

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 11:44 PM PDT

I was planning on purchasing a MBP 13" for college. I was wondering if the 128SSD would be a problem or if SSD's even mattered that much for programming.

Windows 10 Laptop for Recreation, Large Excel Files, with a long battery life. $700-$1600

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:33 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm buying in the US and have a pretty wide budget between $700-$1600, but if something is slightly above that would give me far superior performance I would consider.

My currently laptop has awful battery so I need something that will last for at least 6 to 8 hours. My excel files I work with are regularly over 100MBs.

Having a light laptop is important.

    Windows 10 is a must.

Not too particular on screen size, would prefer around 15 inches.

No gaming/editing or anything of the sorts will be used.

Reliability is the biggest must, having a slick keyboard would be nice and a fingerprint scanner would be cool as well. I want this laptop to last for several years, especially if it is on the higher end of my budget.

As I mentioned before only things like Netflix, YouTube, article reading and those types of entertainment would be used aside from my big excel files. My last laptop would freeze or work incredibly slow when I would try to work on them. Performance, battery life, and reliability are my biggest needs. I appreciate any suggestions, thank you for your inputs!

MSI GS65 or Razer Blade 15 (2018). Both refurbished.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:26 AM PDT

I'm looking for an cleaning or minimal looking laptops with adobe work (Photoshop and Premiere) and the Option to 144hz light-medium gaming (Overwatch, CSGO and MOBAs), not really highend-AAA titles

My budget would be 1800€ max. and found two options at the moment:

    • the MSI GS65 with i7 8750/GTX 1070/512SSD for 1500€ or

    • the Razer Blade 15 (2018) with the same spec, but an 256GB SSD for 1700€

both are refurbished with 2 Years of warrenty.

Both looks good and i could upgrade the ssd on the razer. I know i could get better laptops with newer hardware, but they are often looking ugly/gamery to me. And there is also the aero 15 x9 with the 1660ti for 2000€ but I don't know, it's more expensive.

Hope you could help me out :)

Latest I3 vs Ryzen 2200U for heavy browser, doc, and pdf use.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:15 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

So i need to choose between these 2 for my daily use. And sound like their computing power is not that different.

I do play old games sometimes, so ryzen looks promising but I've read somewhere that it has reliability and driver problem is it tru?

And I also read that performance wise, i3 is better especially in battery performance.

But do their graphic performance have big differences?

And do you have rocomended brand or type?

    Give me your thoughts!

    Need something portable for photoshop

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 03:53 AM PDT

Hello everyone, any advice would be much appreciated.... I'm looking for kind of a specific laptop so I've only been looking at "assemble your own laptop" websites. But if pre configured laptops already exist, please do recommend!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** £1000/$1250 UK

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Battery life is very important to me.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Portability is really important, if you can get a tiny laptop, that would be great!

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. ** Windows, but I have my own copy so it's not a big deal.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Smaller the better so that it's lighter

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
    Photo editing

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** NA

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** -fill here, remove dashes-

RAM: I need at least 16GB of RAM for photoshop, if you can get 32, that would be great.
GPU: Weakest possible, don't really need it CPU: Strongest possible
SSD: M2 would be nice, but minimum 500GB please.
OS: I already have a copy so I was hoping to save money by custom building, but if they're included, it's not a problem.
Battery life: NEEDS to be long, 8 hours minimum with day to day use.

Basically, my only real requirement as such, are the long battery life and at least 16GB ram. Thanks!

I can't decide between these laptops for my mom... help me plz

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 03:49 AM PDT

    Hi,

My mom is in need of a laptop and for the past week I have been searching up potential laptops that may suit her. I however have little to no knowledge on laptops so I went around searching for ones with at east 4gb ram, and an SSD. All the ones listed below are refurbished, and most come with 1 year warranty's. She is searching for a reliable laptop that she will use for watching videos, and low level business work. Our price range is 400-600 Canadian.

Looking for laptop replacement for general use/casual gaming

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 09:25 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

Preferably under $2,000, but willing to invest in something that'll last 5+ years! Will be purchasing in Singapore, but feel free to recommend laptops I can find on Amazon

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs for money, but I'm also intrigued by 2-in-1 tech like the Microsoft Surface line

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Preferably an aesthetic lightweight/thin form factor, but not as important as good specs, since the laptop will primarily be only for home use

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Preferably Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

Simple gaming + general use (web browsing, Netflix, etc)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Looking to get into gaming, particularly Steam and games like Fallout, Tomb Raider, Witcher, Portal, etc (I would welcome games recommendations too for relative beginners!)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality for sure, I want this to last 5+ years if possible, like my 2013 MBP it's replacing

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking to replace a 2013 MacBook Pro (running both Mac OS and Windows from university days) that has served me well for going on 5 years, but its dying battery, and Apple's limited universe, have compelled me to start looking for Windows replacements.

I appreciate any and all suggestions, thank you!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money and lightweight

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? A lot, i have to carry it around everyday

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't game

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't like Asus, i had a lot of bad experiences with them. A lot of 13" laptop has an integrated video card and 8 gb of ram, this means that the available memeory is around 5-6 GB. I want to have 8GB of ram available and a dedicated video card or 16GB of ram available and an integrated video card. I like Dell and Lenovo a lot. I saw the Inspiron 13 serie 5000 - 5390; it has a Nvidia MX250 on a 13" and i'm worried of thermal throttling problems.

Need laptop/2-in-1 for photography and coding

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 02:18 AM PDT

As the title says + should replace my desktop. Torn between the Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2 - however not sure which size SSD to get + RAM. My desktop (which I will sell) has a 512GB SSD and have plenty of space left and got 32GB RAM. Photos are stored on a WD Red drive, backups are done in the cloud.

I only use the SSD for OS and installing the programs I need (Lightroom, InDesign, Visual Studio, ..) and some smaller applications.

So unsure about the SSD size and RAM size to make it future proof enough (3-4 years of usage) but not pay for an overpriced laptop. The i5/8GB/128GB is 1020 euro and the i5/8GB/256GB is 1500 euro... almost 500 euro difference for 128GB SSD space more...

    Buying location: Belgium, Europe

Any advice or alternatives? I like the 2-in-1 and/or ultrabook factor. Pen support would be nice on a 2-in-1 but not necessary.

    Thanks!

Total budget and country of purchase:

1000-1650 euro (should be desktop replacement) - Belgium, Europe

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery, 2-in-1 or ultrabook (like the SL2)

100% sRGB is a must, have an external monitor at home though.

How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Weight not so much. Thinness is.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows or Mac

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 to 14 inch (maybe 15 as well)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Help with on the go gaming laptop

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:56 AM PDT

Hi. Kindly I need advice in picking a gaming laptop that I will be using for general office and other random stuff. I do have a desktop setup and that will always be my daily driver. But as I'm having longer trips and I somtimes want to game in them. Mostly FFXIV and other lighter games and would like a good screen for Youtube and maybe movies. Having good keyboard is very important. As it's needed it both my gaming and my on the go office work.

Below are the options I found. If there is a significant gain from going to a higher budget I would be willing to pay more.

    1-Acer Nitro 5 AN515 Laptop: Core i5-8300H, 15.6inch Full HD IPS Display, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, NVidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Graphics https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C715KNT

    2-MSI GV62 8RD-275 15.6" Performance Gaming Laptop NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti 4G, Intel Core i5-8300H, 8GB, 256GB NVMe SSD, Red Backlit KB, Win 10 Home, Aluminum Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MCDNHJ3

    3-HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15.6" Core i5-8300H 15.6-inch Diagonal Full HD IPS Anti-Glare WLED-Backlit Display(1920 x 1080) with Narrow Bezel Design 8GB RAM + 1TB HDD Storage 15-cx0056wm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KQXHP4M

I'm leaning towards the HP and if HDD gets to annoying upgrade it with an SSD. And if I'm not mistaken I can upgrade all of there ram to 16GB later if needed. (doubt I would but it's peace of mind).

Thank you for your time ^

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is a must. Touch screen and nice keyboard would be lovely.

      • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Been looking into ultrabooks a lot, for what I can expect at most in the gpus are MX150s, which for my usage would be more than enough. I'm interested in the surface laptop 2 since it's built nice and it is a great machine, but the high res screen worries me that it wouldn't be able to run league of legends in good fps.

    Any ideas are great!

Laptop for a master's student in Big Data - around $800 - Spain

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 12:57 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

So I need some help, I moved to Spain from the US and unfortunately I had to leave behind my desktop (which I am selling to buy this). I will be studying a master's in Big Data and I think I need a laptop better suited for it. So any advice on what I should look for on top of suggestions would be appreciated. Currently I have a 12in, Pentium N4200 1.10GHz, 8GB RAM, with a keyboard that makes it hard to code due to its size and layout.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I think best specifications for the money is most accurate.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's important since I will be moving around with it.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I will use Windows, though likely also Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Currently I havea 12in but keyboard makes it tough to type, so bigger would be better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I had a gaming PC which I miss, though the focus on this would be for the master's purposes. If someone that knows more on what I need for that purpose thinks I can fit some light gaming in, it would be great.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and reliable build quality. This will be my main PC so good I/O.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would love to hear everyone's opinion on what should be more important for my use case, as for now I assume it would be CPU power. If anyone else knows the field or studied something similar, maybe they can tell me what to expect/look for.

    Refurb Dell vs New Asus

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 08:28 PM PDT

I am in the market for a cheaper laptop. I mostly use my gaming desktop PC that I built, but want a laptop for portability. As such, this does not need to be an extremely powerful machine, but fast and lots of storage, mostly used for internet/school stuff. I am looking to spend $400-500. Specs I'd like to have:

    • 13-15in screen
    • Intel i5
    • at least 8gb RAM
    • nice to have SSD (128gb or higher), or at least 1 TB HDD with slot to add SSD.
    • not too heavy and decent battery life

I am currently looking at refurbished Dell machines via the Dell Outlet site -- there are many Inspiron 15'' 5000 series units available with the above specs for around $400, with one having a 256gb SSD. I wanted to ask for opinions on Dell laptops? I've never had one, and have heard mixed views on build quality and reliability. However, these specs at the low price points are attractive.

The other option I am considering is the ASUS VivoBook F510UA. $500 for i5/8gb/1 TB HDD, and slot to add a SSD. I have a good opinion of ASUS as well, and this would be a brand new machine. However, would have to purchase and add a SSD.

Thus, new ASUS machine for about $150 more without SSD, or refurb Dell with all desired specs and cheaper, but used and uncertain about build quality. Between these two options, which would you recommend? Thanks!

Casual gaming/DJing laptop for around $500 (bonus points for a backlit keyboard)

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 08:12 PM PDT

1). I DJ as a hobby and my current laptop feels like it's on its last legs. So I need something with a decent amount of storage for music, but nothing necessarily huge.

    2) I've been feeling nostalgic for online games from my childhood, particularly MapleStory and RuneScape or maybe SWTOR. Not very graphically demanding games, but I'd love to have a laptop that could run them well on their highest settings (except maybe for SWTOR on its highest settings.

    3) Not like this is a deciding factor, but I've always wanted a cool rainbow backlit keyboard lmao

I don't know very much about computers so I appreciate any and all feedback. I was considering the Acer Aspire E 15 but have heard it's very slow until you install your own SSD and isn't very good build quality. The E5 model is $400 on Amazon, maybe there's an affordable SSD that would make the E 15 worth grabbing (leave me a link if there is please!)?

    Thanks!

EDIT: New to the sub and wasn't aware of the posting format, will update this post with that soon. Sorry! Feel free to make suggestions still though.

    Laptop Under 1500$

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:50 PM PDT

Looking for a gaming laptop between 1000-1500 USD. from minimal searching I've narrowed it down to these 3. Would be used mainly while traveling and would like something that'll last even if it means slightly less in the performance department.

    1) Omen 15-dc1030nr 2) ASUS Zephyrus S 3) MSI GS65 Stealth

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000-1500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Would like good battery life but not necessary, as long as its more than 3hrs and is sturdy. No touchscreen.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, will be used for travel. As long as its not super bulky it should3be an issue though

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would like to use CREO/ 3d printing software. Maybe abacus. However not a deal breaker if I can't use it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Yes, overwatch, minecraft, assassins creed, other FPS. Fps ~60

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality
