College student looking for a basic, reliable laptop

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:14 PM PDT

Total Budget and Country of Purchase: United States, i'd like to spend less than $750

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life, or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: 2 in 1 does not really interest me much, I'd really prefer a strong battery life. I'm in college and a commuter student, I have long days where my battery needs to last

How important is weight and thinness to you? I would love it to be light, sometimes I'll be carrying this in my bag for eight hours a day, but a bigger computer is not necessarily a deal breaker

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. And not a Windows S version where you can only download microsoft stuff.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Just not super small

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like to be able to use photoshop, but it's not super important

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)? N/A

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: I'm really just looking for something that will last me a good amount of time. I need strong battery life because some of my classes are 3 whole hours long. I'm an edu major so I don't need to do any heavy tech stuff, I just want reliability, kind of light weight, and strong battery life. When i started school two years ago i bought a $300 dell laptop and its been such a disappointment, weak battery life, and has had problems running throughout, so I really don't want to get burned again

New College Student looking for a laptop to last atleast the next 4 years

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:42 PM PDT

So you guys know, I am lucky enough to have a Microcenter near me if that helps.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

I would like to stay between $800-$1200 ( USA).

But I was also looking at the MSI G65 and Acer predator triton 500 for $1500, I would be willing to go up that high if you guys think these laptops are worth the price.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Don't want a 2 in 1, prefer a decent battery, at least 5 hours if possible.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Would like to stay around 5lbs or less. So as thin as possible without compromising performance/ thermals too much

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13 inches - 15.6 inches, But, probably at 15.6 inches with 144hz, 1080p

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I enjoy playing video games, my college degree will be in IT

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

csgo, fortnite, overwatch, other competitive games. Also to be able to run some AAA games, but I usually don't buy games very often. I usually play at lower settings unless it offers gameplay advantages like viewing distance in fornite.

I want to able to play smoothly with a 144hz screen

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Build quality is important as I want this laptop to be able to last 4+ years as I use this to play games at home and take this with me to use at school during classes. Good Keyboard+ Trackpad, would prefer SSD or SSD + HD combo.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

    - Laptop to play games and portable for school.

Important specs for me include - Intel I7, 16 GB ram, GTX 1060 - RTX 2060 (GTX 1660ti seems to be the sweet spot)

Laptops I am looking at right now - Should I be worried about buying from companies like Acer and MSI?

    - Acer Predator Triton 500 - This is my top choice other than the price, RTX 2060, would be able to buy this off Acer's website with student discount for about $1.530 - little lighter and thinner with better battery and 512 gb SSD

    - $1,500 is a little much for me, do you guys think it would be worth it over the Helios 300? Though I can't get that price on Amazon. should I have any worries about buying the laptop directly from Acer instead of Amazon?

    - Acer Predator Helios 300 (2019) - All specs I need/ want for $1,200 - just wish it was a little thinner with a bigger battery, but when do guys think of the durability for this laptop.

    - MSI GS65 - On sale at Best Buy for $1,500 with RTX 2060 16GB ram. 512SSD, Though it seems the the 16GB ram is single channel. Is it worth it over the Triton 500?

-Razer Blade 15 (2018) - $1400 from Razer with GTX 1060 with 1tb HD with 128 GB SSD, 16GB ram, seems overpriced.

Other laptop suggestions are welcome, right now the Helios 300 is my top choice, do you guys think it will be durable enough for at least the next 4 years? I take care of things pretty well. And what are you guys' opinions on buying Acer laptops/ buying from Acer?

Looking for good laptop for College, heavily considering MacBook Air

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:57 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 America

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important! I want it as light as possible, I have to carry it around campus with me all day.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer Mac, but not required

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not hugely important, but I am looking for the lighter laptops, which usually means on the smaller side, about 13 inch is fine

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No editing or games!

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard a MUST have, long battery life, fast + reliable, will last me a few years

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have an hp ENVY that died on me and need to replace it. Really considering the MacBook Air. I don't do any coding or editing ( Biology major). I've never spent this much on a laptop and I just want confirmation that it is in fact worth the $1000+ price tag, or suggestions for other laptops that are better/ more worth the money. I want it to last several years. My hp only lasted 3. I want to switch over to Mac from pc, just haven't yet because, again, the price.

15.6 inch screen, Australia, $ 2000 AUD MAX Laptop required.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 03:48 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max of AUD $2,000. Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't want a touch screen. Would like a battery life, that would last at least 6 hours.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer a laptop under 2.2 KGS. Weight more important than thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Home

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-16 inches. Nothing less, nothing more. 300 nits minimum required. 1920x1080 only.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Do a bit of programming with Python, VBA. Use Excel heavily. Will use Chrome with 5-10 tabs of Youtube open. I also would like to connect my laptop to my 4k TV to watch a downloaded 4K movie. I would prefer if I can do all these tasks without any stutter/lag. No requirement for gaming at all.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard should be decent. Would like it to be backlit. Seperate numeric keypad not a must, as I have wireless keyboard when I need to type alot. No touch screen. Finger print reader would be sweet. No need for optical drive. Decent multi touchpad. NVMe SSD is a must - 256 gb is okay.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop is 6 years old. Browsing is okay. But trying to play any youtube videos on 4k stutters alot. I can't even have multiple tabs open in Chrome either. NVMe SSD is a must.

I am confused, for the tasks I mentioned above, if I need i7-8750H or an i5-8300H is enough? Do I need 16 gb ram? Will the on-board intel graphics card be enough to play 4k videos with no issues?

Thank you for reading and helping me!

Looking for a new laptop to replace my sad dying 2014 15" macbook pro

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 09:44 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**
~$3k probably (based on the current costs of the MBPs), USA

(although I'm traveling to Taiwan later this year, idk if it'd be cheaper to buy there?)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

battery life and good specs are nice, don't care about 2 in 1 form factor.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

I love the form factor of the MBPs, but some quick research shows that PCs make similar looking computers nowadays!

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

I love Mac's OS but I will learn a different OS if I have to.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13-15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I'm a watercolor & digital artist, so I use a lot of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I also make videos, so I use Adobe Premiere (although I've considered purchasing Final Cut Pro). I have the Mac version of Rhino3d (my beloved CAD software that I do still occasionally use, although not for anything super heavy).
I use InDesign sometimes. All of my Adobe Suite products are either really old (CS6, LOL) or the new version that I got through my full-time job. I also occasionally do some very light gaming (think like, Stardew Valley). I also use software for my printer, scanner, and cutting machines, but I don't think those are particularly heavy.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I'm not picky about this because this isn't what my computer is really for.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A good screen - I need to be able to color correct my paintings easily. Also, I'd like for it to last a long time because I do not like repurchasing expensive electronics.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I am pretty spoiled with my MBP even though it's pretty old now, and it's struggling a lot when it comes to opening larger Photoshop files or exporting even just a ~10 minute video from Premiere (I'm not using 4k footage, just footage from a digital point and shoot camera and my phone). I have an iPad Pro that I use for drawing, so I don't need the computer to be able to handle a lot of drawing (thus, touch screen is not necessary), and it doesn't need to be too too portable because I just bring my iPad to different places nowadays. The big thing for getting a new laptop is that I have a lot of software that is only Mac-compatible, and I'd have to rebuy it for a Windows computer (although if I were saving a bunch of cash on the Windows computer, it'd probably be worth it?)

Thanks in advance for your help!!

This will be replacing an HP 360 x pavillion that I had for about a year. I honestly didnt use it that much and the screen popped out which caused the chassis to break and it's now unusable. For that reason I do not want another HP. I use my phone for just about everything but there's always those times when you just need a computer. Main purpose will be streaming and light internet browsing. I know I can go cheap for just that but I want something that's going to be on the faster side and have a good display but trying to figure out specs is driving me crazy.

Looking for small but powerful laptop for video editing, media production and some light gaming

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:09 AM PDT

Hello, as the title suggest, I'm currently starting to look for a laptop that will replace the one I currently have (growing old, hinge broken and doesn't perform as well as I'd like)

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm aiming for a 1200$CAD budget, but ready to go to 1500$CAD if the laptop is somewhat guaranteed to last 4+ years. Country of purchase: Canada - but I can probably find a way to get something out of the USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I've grown to like the 2 in 1 factor with a 360 touchscreen despite really not thinking about it at first, so 2 in 1 factor would be good, but not mandatory. Battery life should last at least 5 hours on light use (browsing). Looking for best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't really care much about the weight, but I do want as portable and sleek as possible. Something I could slide in a smaller backpack, in the hydration pack pocket.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Looking to use Windows as most of my programs are for Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Screen size would be 13 or 14 inches but offer at least 1920x1080 resolution.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Looking for a pretty high performance device as I'd like to run: Vegas Pro (Video Editing), Probably the Adobe Creative Suite in the future, and some games through steam and Guild Wars 2 - important to note, GW2 is badly optimized, it works on DX9 only and performance isn't enhanced by graphics card that much. Much more processor-based. (Single thread engine...) - I also run some Android Emulator

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Guild Wars 2 is my main game, but if it can run some of the newer Tomb Raider games, I'd be pleasantly surprised. Also included: Overwatch, Identity V and Other Steam titles

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard must be solid and backlit - if it's spillproof, even better but not mandatory. Reliable build - I plan on travelling around a lot with that laptop, it should survive everyday use and more. No need for finger-print reader nor optical drives, but I do want USB 3.0 plugs, and if possible, USB-C Charging for the laptop plug, and an HDMI Output, 2 in 1 headset audio jack, and SD Card reader - SD card, I can live without, as I'll probably go with a multi card adapter. At least 2 USB slots and for the wireless, WiFi (duh) and Bluetooth

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So again, I'm looking for a solid, ultra portable high performance laptop so I can travle the world and edit videos, pictures, and maybe play some games once in a while, but the main focus is as a work tool for media production. 2 in 1 is cool with me, but not mandatory. 13 to 14 inches so I can carry it in a hydration pack pocket of smaller backpacks, so small form factor is pretty important.

    Thank you very much!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    $1,500-$2,200

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Don't want a 2 in 1, prefer a great battery.

Macbook Air 2019 vs Pro 2019

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:33 AM PDT

    Hey,

So I'm a CS student who's gonna start his 4th year in college. I've been looking into getting a Mac and have been torn between the Macbook Air 13 inch,256 gb,8gb RAM,1.6 Ghz dual core and the Macbook Pro 13inch,256 gb, 8gb RAM,1.4 Ghz quad core.

I intend to use this laptop for the next 4 to 5 years atleast during which I will probably be working. Since I will be buying it in India, the difference between the two models is about 200 dollars.

I was wondering if it's worth spending that extra money for better performance given that I'll be doing a fair amount of coding over the coming year.

I want to buy a a Mac specifically and will welcome suggestions on whether I should go for older Mac models too with the condition that the budget is around 1400$ taking into account durability. Thank you!

    Any Law School laptop recommendations?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:33 AM PDT

Filling out the form first - I'll add more detail at the end of the post!

\ **Total budget and country of purchase:***

    400/500$, US

\ **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.***

    good battery life

\ **How important is weight and thinness to you?***

Very; I'd like a lightweight, small laptop that would possibly not be too delicate

\ **Which OS do you require? ***

    Windows

\ **Do you have a preferred screen size?***

    Small, maybe 13/14"?

\ **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.***

No. I only use the Office suite, Adobe Reader and do light browsing/streaming on netflix. No gaming.

\ **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?***

I'd prefer a traditional laptop, not really into the 2-in-1 models or anything touchscreen. A good keyboard is a plus and I'd really appreciate a screen that doesn't tire the eyes too much: I definitely prefer an anti-glare screen as opposed to a "glossy" screen.

\ **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.***

After this term in a US law school, I'm moving back home to Italy, so I'd like for my laptop to work there too!

    More into detail:

I'm in law school and want to replace my (5-year-old!) hp laptop with something new. I only really use Microsoft Word, the acrobat pdf reader, and do some browsing to look for case law and papers online. My ideal laptop is small, reasonably priced (around 400/500$), as lightweight as possible (but not too delicate) and has a long battery life so that I can bring it with me to lectures without having to worry about running out of battery while I'm taking notes.

I find Apple laptops very aesthetically pleasing and I also like their size, but they would be a total waste of money on me since I basically only write and read files. I like the idea of a Lenovo IdeaPad but I've found so many different models and can't tell them apart!

    Thank you all!

Uni undergraduate looking for a powerful laptop with a good airflow system (and if possible a desktop replacement) that can handle heavy 3d graphics

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:45 AM PDT

About me: I'm an architecture undergraduate and I use Zbrush/maya/3ds max/Cinema 4d (So let's call it 3d animation) on my spare time as well as playing video games. I thought of going for ROG G703 but I think that's too expensive for my budget ( I can go until a thousand dollars and perhaps a hundred more or two) , especially that I'm a student.

Any suggestions? Is it worth it? Isn't it too much for me?

Looking for a new work laptop

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:37 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: €2,000 - purchasing in Ireland

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and portability are the most important factors. Needs to be a good, solid laptop as I travel a lot.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, travel a lot so weight is key.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch ideally

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ideally I would like a backlit keyboard, touch screen would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a Dell XPS 13 which I have had for about 4 years and have been very happy with. Our IT provider has suggested another Dell XPS 13, a Microsoft Surface Laptop or a HP Elitebook X360 although I can suggest other options.

    Thanks all!

I'm not great with computers but I download lots of music/movies, stream lots, I run DJ programs like serato and record and edit a lot. I also travel/hike and wear a backpack everyday. Need a solid all around everyday laptop. Please and thank you!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600-$700 can push to $800 if there a big difference

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. For the most part my laptop will be plugged in and powered so I'm not too worried about battery life. Not sure what 2 in 1 form factor is? Haha sorry.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? When I do carry it I would like it be on the lighter/thin side but I dont want it to be flimsy and possibly break. I'll carry the extra weight if it means its stronger.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I currently watch movies on my cell phone. Anything bigger would be better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. For the most part no. I may in the future want to edit some videos together(I use a Sony video editor program, rarely)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not sure. Last game I bought was fallout 4 for xbox, but I'll run emulators to play older games NES, SNES type stuff.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality and able to run multiple usb drives as sometimes my dj buddies have drives with music.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not worried about security. For the most part I need storage for lots of music and movies(I also run external storage and connect via usb). I like to watch high quality movies at night.

Thanks for any and all help!

    12-15" : USA : $0-750

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:13 PM PDT

I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 right now. I've had it for about 3 years now. I've loved it, but my screen broke today (and repair doesn't look simple), so I'm looking for a replacement.

I honestly don't care if it's used or a few generations old.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Somewhere south of $800

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is most important, specs for the money is 2nd.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I do like the ultrabook feel, but it doesn't have to be an ultrabook

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-15". Smaller is better

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do a little CAD and some games. Mostly programming though.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Stellaris, Factorio, CKII

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

1080p screen. I'm using 3200x1800 right now, and I'd like at least that. Good keyboard, touchpad, and battery life are necessary. I don't want a Macbook...

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Like I said above I don't need anything too fancy if I have to go back a generation or two to find what I need in my budget I'm fine with that. If it has good battery life, and a great screen I'm sold. 16GB of RAM and SSD preferred.

Weight is important, preferably something around or under 3 pounds

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows only

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Must be between 13 and 15 inches. Nothing under or above please.

    Not gaming.. N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

good build for portability for in class notes, homework, and research. Touch screen, a small graphics card would be nice to assist in photo editing, good thermals (dont like when laptops get hot to the touch under or on the keyboard), ssd storage is a must, and ddr4 ram is preferred if possible

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I will be using this laptop to write notes on it in class and take to my dorm to do homework, multitasking for everyday use, and programming. I will also be doing my photo editing on it. A portable and powerful laptop would be best. Thank you and I appreciate any suggestions and discussion.

[US] Seeking a 15.6" laptop with a FHD matte/anti-glare IPS screen and a centered trackpad.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 05:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$500 new or <$300 used. USA.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferred.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" matte/anti-glare IPS screen only.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Centered trackpad is a must. Also an SSD is preferred but not mandatory.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is for my aging parents to use at work. Looking for something similar to the older Lenovo T520 or T530 or older Macbook Pros that still had anti-glare screens and centered trackpads. It's a bit tough to find laptops today this size with relatively centered trackpads.
