This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Been given new RAM, is it okay to just "stick it in"?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 10:47 AM PDT

My friend has given me his old RAM, it's 2 sticks of Corsair 8GB Vengeance LPX DDR4. I believe this is faster than my current RAM, which is 2 sticks of 8GB DDR4, but is it okay to install this alongside my current RAM or does the RAM all need to be the same? Also, the current RAM is in the 1 and 3 positions because I read this was best for my motherboard (?) so is it okay to just stick this in the 2 and 4 slots?

    Thanks for you help!

Make sure your fans are blowing in the correct direction..

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 12:26 PM PDT

So, today I was swapping out the liquid cooling in my PC from the Deepcool General 120 to a Fractal Design Celsius S36. While unscrewing and de-constructing the old cooler apart I was looking at the radiator and realized there was alot of dust there, for almost no reason. Sure it's almost guaranteed to be dusty but this was on a whole new level.

I payed no further attention to it but then I started thinking to myself "have I been running this as an intake fan for a whole year since I got it?" and the answer is yes, yes I did..

This moron (aka me) mounted the fan the wrong way when I initially installing the cooler and as a result have been running my computer without an exhaust fan for over a year.

Check your fans for the small arrows, folks, before you do what I did.

    Facepalm.

You should know that if you're getting high fps in games but never "felt" it, it could be microstuttering

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 07:27 PM PDT

i have been living with 120 fps on fortnite for over a year wondering why it felt slow while displaying high fps. I used this 30 second guide https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/391091-how-to-fix-or-reduce-micro-stuttering-in-every-game/# and the difference was night and day. I feel lied to.

commands: REMEMBER THERE ARE TWO COMMANDS!

    bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes

    and

    bcdedit /set useplatformclock true

    I don't have a M.2 screw.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 12:12 PM PDT

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but here we go.

A while ago i bought an intel optane to boost my hdd's performance, but when i opened my pc to insert the m.2 stick i didn't have a screw in the m.2 slot in my motherboard.

My computer is a prebuilt from a company in norway. I have upgraded motherboard, cpu and ram.

Any suggestions on what to do? Can i stick the drive in and leave it floating, or should i identify the screw size and buy one?

GTX 1080 or RTX 2060 super

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 09:04 AM PDT

So I was just going to wait until the RTX 2060 supers came out to get one of those for my first build but I was just offered to buy a GTX 1080 for around the same rumored price as the RTX 2060 super. Now I'm at a dilemma as to which i should get. I'm more of newer title gamer. I'm actually building this PC with psyberpunk 2077 in mind but play destiny 2 right now (on xbox) and cross save is coming in September. I also play ARK: Survival evolved. I'll want to overclock and also game in 1440p 60hz+ on story based games and 1080p 144hz+ on competitive games. Which card would be better suited for me? Thanks for reading and sorry for the format, I'm on Mobile.

I don't believe the release of Nvidia SUPER cards will have much impact on the current pricing structure...

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:55 PM PDT

I know there is a lot of hope that the upcoming Nvidia SUPER cards will cause a downward shift in current GPU pricing.

The thing is, though, that there is _plenty_ of daylight between current GPU prices -- the SUPER cards can slot right in and not have an impact on pricing. Essentially the SUPER cards are just "filling in the blanks" and we're just getting more choices.

I would imagine it will be a little like buying a new car: you have a base price and the more things you add on, the more the price goes up. Nvidia GPU becomes the base and the more you add (speed of memory, amount of memory, etc), the more the price goes up.

(pricing below taken from EVGA website 6/30/2019)

    GPU | PRICE |

    :--|:--:|

    2060 | $350 |

    2060 SUPER | --- |

    2070 | $500 |

    2070 SUPER | --- |

    2080 | $730 |

    2080 SUPER | --- |

    2080 Ti | $1000 |

Will there be some movement? Maybe some.

Will it be that anticipated "omg 50% price drop !!!1!1"? Nope.

Got a dumb question about potential damage to a cpu

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 11:08 AM PDT

First of all I'm sorry if this isn't where I should be posting this.

After months and months of looking I decided I wasn't smart enough to build my own pc and settled for a prebuilt service. Unfortunately it looks like my liquid cooler isn't working properly and the company will be replacing it. The first time I fired it up the cpu was running at about +90c and the fixes they suggested didn't work.

My question is if the half hour or so running the cpu that hot will cause any type of permanent damage? Should I be asking them to replace the cpu as well?

    Thanks!

    Feedback on first pc build

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:09 PM PDT

    Type Item
CPU Intel Core i9 9900K BOX, Coffee Lake
CPU Cooler Be quiet Silent loop 240mm
    Motherboard Gigabyte Z390 AORUS ULTRA
    Memory G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB, 3200 MHz
Storage Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1 TB, M.2
Video Card Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Ti OC, 11 GB
Power Supply Be quiet! ATX 850W 12V DARK POWER PRO 11

Could you please give feedback, if all components are compatible with each other and if you guys have any recommendations for swapping with another item within the same price range.

I don't plan to overclock components, I just want quality for the chosen item.

I also plan to use 2x Asus PG279Q with this build.

    Also some questions:

    - is CPU cooler even needed or is it just for the style points?

    - wasn't sure which one to choose between:

    - gskill 3200mhz or hyperx predator 3600mhz, my logic was to choose gskill because some of you claim that
gskill is a better quality item?

    - Gigabyte Z390 AORUS ULTRA or Asus Maximus XI Hero, chose Aorus, because a lot of you recommend
this motherboard even if it has shit BIOS, but that's not an issue for me if I don't plan to overclock it?

I think my new 2060 GPU is underperforming

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 12:39 PM PDT

Hey. i have a question. I bought a new pc a few days ago and it has a RTX 2060 from Gigabyte. It's combined with a Ryzen 5 2600. I mainly use it to play only one game all the time. Overwatch. I saw a youtube review video of 2 different channels where they had a GTX 2060 with a Ryzen 5 2600 and they easily archieved average fps of 250-260. I only archieve 180-190 fps with alot of drops down to 160 even. I reinstalled windows, reinstalled the drivers (its weird because it sometimes only let me install DCH drivers and sometimes the Standard ones). My 3D Mark Time Spy score was average when i compared it online but i don't know why i have this issues with that game then. i think something holds/blocks the full power of my card. and i don't know how i fix it. Some help would be really appreciated. if you need more infos let me know. my pc specs :

    1 x AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Prozessor

    1 x GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 OC 6G 2.0

1 x Samsung 860 QVO 1 TB, Solid State Drive

    1 x Seagate ST2000DM008 2 TB

    1 x Cooler Master MasterCase H500,

    1 x Corsair TX650M Power Supply

    1 x Corsair DIMM 16GB DDR4-3000 Kit

    1 x MSI B450 TOMAHAWK

    Windows 10 Pro

https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/37199738? is my 3dmark time spy score. seems normal right? it just feels like the game holds back alot of my GPU's power

Does going from SSD to M2 provide noticeable performance boost?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:36 PM PDT

Title pretty much says it all. I have a Kingston SV300 240GB and have the option to upgrade to a Mushkin Pilot 500GB. If I do, would I notice a performance boost?

I'm not much into gaming or video editing. I use my computer mostly for surfing the web and some light coding.

Advise on upgrading relatively old CPU and GPU. Is it worth it on this rig?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 01:51 PM PDT

Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my post! My gaming PC is starting to show its age. I play a lot of video games. ARPGs (Path of Exile, Diablo 3), FPSs (Vermintide 2, Doom), RPGs (heavily modded Skyrim and Fallout 4) just to name a few. I'm getting ~50-60fps in most games until there is a lot of action. Then, I'm dipping down to 30fps and it's definitely affecting my enjoyment. I'm currently planning to upgrade my CPU and GPU with the hopes of sitting at a stable 60fps. However, I was wondering if it is worth it considering my other hardware.

    Here is my current setup:

    CPU: i5-2500K (3.3 GHz)

    GPU: XFX Radeon R9 290 DirectX 11.2 R9-290A-EDFD 4GB 512-Bit GDDR5

    Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77

    RAM: 16GB - 4x Ballistix Tactical Tracer 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1866 (PC3 14900)

    SDD/HDDs: I have 2 SSDs and 3 HDDs connected

PSU: Rosehill Hive Series 750W Modular Gaming PSU, 80 PLUS Bronze Certified

I have a decent CPU cooler. Even when playing games that are maxing out my PC, I'm at 50-55c.

    I have a few questions:

    • My plan is to buy a GPU and CPU upgrade. This Vega 56 was $300 yesterday. An i7-3770K is the best chip I think my mobo can take, I think and they are ~$160 used on ebay. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Are these good upgrades or should I be looking at something else?
    • Is it worth the ~$500 to upgrade this rig or is it time to just completely start over with a new mobo, RAM and possibly PSU?
    • Will I need to do anything other than physically replace the CPU/thermal paste? Do I need to do anything in the BIOS or elsewhere when replacing the chip? I've never replaced a chip before, only done an install on a new system.

I7-9700 for $264. Is this a good deal with Ryzen 2 near?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 08:57 AM PDT

    Urgent Help!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 09:48 AM PDT

Hey guys. I'm new here. Just needed some help with my new gaming PC. I got this PC today from another state. Around 600kms away. It was delivered by a courier service. The PC was completely assembled, packed and sent. It was tested before packing. Since I got it. The PC turns on before even pressing the power button on it. It seems to start as soon as the main power supply is connected from the back. Once the SMPS switch is turned on it automatically comes on. But the monitor says 'No HDMI cable detected'. It's soo annoying!! The PC even comes on when the 'Power SW', 'Led+', 'Led-' wires are disconnected. The RGB's and fans still come in. Need some urgent help guys :(

Things Tried: -Reconnecting GPU -Reconnecting Ram -Resetting the mother board (battery method) -Using Different power Cable

Will using 2 m2 ssd's cause them to run at 50% speed?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 12:48 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

For my new build I bought 2 m2 ssds which will arrive tomorrow. I wonder if using 2x m2 ssds (im using the intel 660p 1TB m2 ssds) cause them to share the speed so will it be slower than running only 1 m2 ssd?

    Current best 144hz gaming monitors?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:20 PM PDT

Hey guys, I bought a monitor G2460PF quite a while ago and back then the it was one of the better budget options, with XG2401 as great option too if you could find it.

What are the current best monitors for a budget and 144z and low delay? Is the new XG2402 the best option now on a budget?

    I've also heard of a new XL2411P?

I'm mainly just looking to upgrade to a dual monitor setup with my G2460PF and another ~24" for gaming.
