Posted: 13 May 2019 03:09 AM PDT Hello everybody. Me and a friend of mine have rented a server by a local hosting company. We use to connect to this server through SSH. I've never had problems and I haven't at the moment but he can't connect today after 3/4 days of regular use for him. We have not changed anything to the configuration and the issue is only related to his pc because it doesn't work both on linux and windows he has on his pc. He can connect with his username through other PCs so I can't totally figure out what the problem could be. By not working I think it goes in timeout without prompting any message. Can you help us? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Help with Ubuntu installation on an external drive Posted: 13 May 2019 01:04 PM PDT Hello, fellow noob here and trying to learn so I found my place in the world. Recently I installed Ubuntu on an external drive, as I want it to be portable. I installed it from my laptop and I could boot Ubuntu from there just fine. The problem began I when I tried to boot from my PC .. At first it wouldn't boot, and I found out that I needed to switch my bios to legacy mode. That seemed to fix it - right to the grub panel - but when I hit enter on the "Ubuntu" option it would freeze on a purple screen. So I did some searching and found out about the nomodeset configuration which I applied (I found this weird since my PC doesn't have an NVIDIA graphics card, it's an intel with integrated graphics). Then it booted okay and everything seems to be working except for the extreme low fps it now has. Everything is really slow. So my question is, how do I fix this? is it possible to make a portable ubuntu installation ?. Any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Linux Mint freezes periodically after long standby time Posted: 13 May 2019 07:48 AM PDT My linux mint 19.1 starts to freeze every several seconds, if it stays up for prolonged periods of time (over a weekend). I can move my mouse, but all windows are completely dead for several seconds. Then for several seconds everything seems normal, than this happens again. If I look on htop, I can spot, that cinnamon DE (version 4.0.10) takes up to 100% of my CPU after that freeze occurs. I found, that it could be caused by graphic card, so I unplugged it and now work from HD graphics. Also I turned off almost all of my cinnamon applets (CPU and RAM monitoring). I have tried to unmount HDD. I have got such problem also with my old working machine (another HDD was used as system drive - now it is SSD, more RAM - now 16 GB from 8, and another, newer CPU - i7-4770 now) and Ubuntu 17.04, so it might be something in my software then? I constantly run MegaCloud-sync, TeamViewer, Nightshift (or flux). I am on 4.15.0-48-generic kernel now, if that matters. Do somebody experience such issues or that is just me? [link] [comments] |
NVMe drive probably died, what does Mint tell me about it? Posted: 13 May 2019 03:27 AM PDT tl,dr: desktop drive died. what am I seeing when I try to mount it in Linux Mint? pastebin of dmesg: https://pastebin.com/eDuJVbw6 I've been having problems with windows bluescreening for a week or so - the error code indicated memory or MB issues, but no testing could ever give a useful answer. Let it sit for 10 mins and cold reboot, and it would work fine until the next day. Until the other night, when it died with a different blue screen code, and rebooted without detecing the nvme drive. A cold reboot detected it, but ended with an ominous "insert system disk" error. No big deal, I have backups. Lots of them for important data, in fact. I've put it into a brand new USB-nvme adaptor, and hooked it up to my laptop. No drives or partitions appear, and the "Disks" util shows it as "no media" where the volumes list it. lsusb shows nothing at all, but dmesg has a bunch of info that makes me think it's toast. Are there any other tests/checks I could do to attempt to make it work? While I'm not worried about saving this one (it's going back under warranty), that will take a few days to process and playing with the tools in case I ever need to recover a failed drive is a worthwhile learning process. Thank you! PMC. [link] [comments] |
Upgrade from ubuntu 16.() to 18.04.2 removed ROOT (CERN) Posted: 13 May 2019 10:59 AM PDT Earlier today, someone had loaded Ubuntu onto my laptop, with the version 16.something , and also copied this file of root 6.14.04, with the folders as shown in the pic. Later, I got a prompt to update the OS, and so I did, however the root software which was installed earlier is no longer there, and I can't figure out what to execute in the terminal to set it back up, since today is my first day with Linux ( I just remember there was something done of the sort 'source .../thisroot.sh) (also, after the update, whenever I open the terminal, it says 'root-config: command not found'. https://i.redd.it/o2f26ydqp0y21.png Please help as soon as possible, I require root(cern) on my laptop at the soonest. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Help connecting to windows pc from ubuntu machine without RDP (win 10 home) Posted: 13 May 2019 02:25 PM PDT Operating system Ubuntu 18.04 I'm trying to set up a headless windows PC without the benefit of having access to windows remote desktop using Remmina. I don't know how to get my linux/ubuntu computer to see my home network, though, and I cant find a decent guide to this on the internet( most are from the windows perspective, trying to hook up to a linux pc.) I do have the advantage of access and control of both PCs and the network, though. [link] [comments] |
Frozen screen after upgrade to Fedora 30 Posted: 13 May 2019 01:42 PM PDT Hello, I upgraded my system from Fedora 29 to 30, and now when I try to log on, the screen is stuck with just a Fedora logo. I am able to use ctrl+alt+F3 to login, but startx does not work and I have no way of accessing the desktop. I do not think Nvidia drivers are the issue, as I have disabled and enabled nouveau drivers to no avail. I tried using recovery mode, and it just says my root account is locked. Any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks in advance. EDIT: upon consulting the X.org log, it says NVIDIA: Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module [link] [comments] |

Setting up four workstations to one computer. Posted: 13 May 2019 12:46 PM PDT Hi all, I'm hoping to gain insight into solution I'm missing. I'm want to set up four workstations to one computer (already set up with necessary ports for peripherals). I need a lightweight distro that has limited capabilities for users to mess with settings. All we need is an internet browser and maybe Libre office, and printing capabilites. Is there a linux distro that handles the multiple workstations, too, or would that have to be separate software? Posted: 13 May 2019 07:23 AM PDT If you haven't seen me around other sub reddits, my name is Ben and fairly new to Linux. I've been on Linux for about ~1week or so. I've been watching tutorials and trying to find my direction. I am looking for the best way to learn everything I possibly can. I've been around Synaptic and terminal watching some videos that use them often. I want to know the best ways I can learn more. Essentially I'd like to get into coding/programming, but still need to learn the basics. I've seen a few books people recommend. At this point I'm willing to read whatever I have to and advance my knowledge. I'm kind of lost as where to go after getting comfortable with the desktop environment. I really need some guidance and for someone to speak as simple as possible. I am new please don't forget. I appreciate all the help so far, and just looking to further my knowledge. Thanks, -Ben [link] [comments] |
Error trying to access other system's camera by ssh within a python script Posted: 13 May 2019 10:52 AM PDT I am trying to access a live video from another system. For that, I have copied a python opencv file in the remote system and I tried to access the video using ssh from my python script. Can someone explain to me how to resolve this error and why this error has occurred?

Cant i postpone the death by not writing anything to it or is its time already set in stone? What exactly is going on? Why does it mean that its failing? [link] [comments] |
vgreduce/lvreduce during SAN replacement Posted: 13 May 2019 09:05 AM PDT I'm in the process of decommissioning a SAN. I have mirrored the data to the new SAN via lvconvert -m1. My plan for removing the old SAN is as follows: • vgdisplay –v <san groups> to find the contents of the SAN • lvconvert –m 0 <applied to the various old SANs) • vgreduce vg_san <the component parts of the SAN> Do I also need to lvreduce? My thought is no, because I'm not really changing the size of the volume. I just want to fully disconnect the SAN from the server, reboot to clear any remaining traces loaded in memory, and then I think I'm done. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2019 08:13 AM PDT I'm an C# dev professionally. I need to spin up a webserver for some personal use and have no desire to pay for a windows license. I have access to my own VM environment and have a few Linux VM's running (Ubuntu LTS Servers), so I'm not completely a Linux noob (I know enough bash + google-fu to break things nicely). Mainly I'm looking for a web server/language that wont be too complex to install (what packages) and language to pickup. My site is basically just going to display files in a directories (mp4's) to allow play/delete. [link] [comments] |

Difference between changing desktop environment or the entire distro Posted: 12 May 2019 09:10 PM PDT Hi, I am new to linux and I have an old pc with Core2duo E6300 1.86ghz processor and 2 gb ram. I recently wiped the windows 7 on it and installed Linux mint 19.1 because the system is slow. Even after installing mint it is still slow and hangs sometimes but is usable. I have heard that using a lightweight DE like lxde can make your pc run faster. But I am also considering installing lubuntu. So in your opinion which would be better, lxde or change distro? and which de should I choose? Thanks in advance.... [link] [comments] |
Simple way to move mouse with keyboard? Posted: 13 May 2019 06:01 AM PDT I've created my own GPIO matrix keypad connected to a raspberry pi running Raspbian. Inside of the dts file I had to make I've been assigning linux-event-codes to each button on my matrix keyboard. Is there a way I can assign mouse movements to my keys? I need the mouse to work on startup. I've had some mild success using a method where you use the number pad keys to move the mouse however that requires running a couple commands on bootup everytime. The only thing I can think of is to create a bash script to run on start up everytime but that seems messy and it's quite buggy anyway. Is there a simple way to assign key presses to mouse events on Raspbian? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu server doesnt reconnect after internet needs reboot Posted: 13 May 2019 04:33 AM PDT Currently on Vodafone UK BB. Every so often it needs to be restarted. However once it's back up and running, my server appears to be disconnected still and I have to reboot the server via the power button to have it back online again. Any ideas?
