Laptop using integrated 630 instead of using the gPU Posted: 02 May 2019 05:08 AM PDT Im using a hp spectre x360 with the 1050ti but whenever i load a game the frame rates are super low. when i check task manager its showing that the 1050ti isnt really in use. and when i check display settings it says that my laptop is using the 630 instead of the 1050ti. but whenever i connect a second monitor in display settings it says in graphics settings that thats using the 1050ti and my laptop is using 630 [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2019 07:11 AM PDT My laptop recently broke and I urgently need to get a new one but can't decide which is better? I use it mostly for university work so want it to be easily portable and a long battery life. Although ultimately I'm not a fan of a super thin laptop due to the fact they just look like they may snap? [link] [comments]
Laptops with high-end CPUs but integrated GPUs? Posted: 02 May 2019 02:19 PM PDT I'm looking for a laptop with a high-end CPU (nowadays they're hexa-core CPUs, and soon we'll get octa-core CPUs if the rumors/leaks are true) with integrated graphics and no dedicated graphics. The idea is this way I can upgrade the GPU whenever I want with an eGPU setup and hopefully the CPU will still be relevant a generation or two or three down the line (if you look at benchmarks at least, the i7-2760QM performs about the same as the i7-7700HQ, which are 5 generations apart). I guess I could always buy something with a dGPU and disable it in the BIOS or something, but I heard that some laptops will brick themselves if you try to do that, or the display output ports are sometimes tied to the dGPU so they'll stop working. And the added benefits would be less heat/power, one fewer point of failure, and potentially lower price. However, it seems like every laptop with an i7-8750H or better has some sort of dGPU included. Are there any that don't? [link] [comments]

Just changed the thermal paste on my laptop. Posted: 01 May 2019 04:08 PM PDT Took about 40 minutes to do, I applied the thermal paste by doing a rectangle on the die with a dot in the middle.
Unfortunately, I didn't take screenshots so these temps are from memory. Before: Idle, 50C-55C. Load, 90C-95C. After: Idle, 38C-45C. Load, 60C-65C. Laptop is generally more quiet*. Also higher frame rate in games. Overall, I recommend this for a 6+ year old laptop. I plan on doing this again on a Dell Latitude E5420 with an identical cpu and will document it better. Acer Chromebook 15 (Pentium N4200) vs Acer Aspire E15 (I3-8130U) Posted: 02 May 2019 11:37 AM PDT I'm looking towards buying a new laptop and these are basically the 2 main choices for me. Right now, refurbished, they're about a dollar apart on Acer's Refurbished website. They both fit the bill for what I need with the exception of OS and the Chromebook has a touchscreen. I've had some pretty terrible experiences with budget Windows laptops in the past, but from scouring the internet, the E15 seems the be performing well. On the other hand, I'm slowly moving towards a home and workspace centered around the Google ecosystem. I know they both would work pretty well for the most part for my uses (Browsing the internet, word processing, Hulu). For gaming, I understand the Chromebook can run most Android games pretty well, which is about as serious as I get nowadays. Does anyone have any opinions on either of these laptops or moving towards Chrome OS? [link] [comments]
Is undervolting really safe? How are your experience after doing it? Posted: 02 May 2019 11:21 AM PDT My laptop has an i7-4750HQ and a gtx 950m I use it mostly for school, work, and gaming. Looking for cheap laptop for mturk work/occasional WoW Posted: 02 May 2019 07:17 AM PDT Title says it all, just looking for some real help (yes, I've tried google, would like other's opinions). I basically am looking for a cheap laptop that I can take with me to my actual job, so I can do my side job (amazon mturk). As well as maybe screw around on WoW and other older games. I don't need anything fancy. Thanks a lot for your everyone's input! [link] [comments]

Worn out ASUS Laptop, how do I optimize it?. Posted: 02 May 2019 08:53 AM PDT Hello, I have an "ASUS ROG G551J" that is becoming a bit old and is really worn. I used to do "intros" on YouTube, which would make the PC overheat I guess and I did it for like 2 years straight. In After Effects and Cinema 4D, also did some photoshop occasionally. Anyway, I wanna optimize it as much as possible, since I am attending a continuation school next "semester" or whatever and I don't have my own laptop, I use a Chromebook from the school that I am currently attending and I am pretty sure I can't buy it from the school, so I want to either optimize my laptop or sell it after it has been optimized. It's so worn out at this point, that I can't disconnect it from the charger without it shutting off automatically (I am planning on buying a battery soon) and its fans are roaring as soon as I open anything and sometimes when I just start the PC and it's just on idle, the fans just start making noise like crazy. I am also unable to get one of the screws out on the bottom, because I tried so hard to get the screw out that I just scratched it to the point that I couldn't screw it in or out, so it's basically stuck. So, I just wanna know how to optimize it to its fullest such as removing all bloatware and all that stuff. TL;DR: Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2019 06:57 AM PDT I'm not an Apple fan by any means, but their MacBook Pro always looked appealing to me, but all the reliability problems with the keyboard, the fact that Premiere is not optimized well on macOS and the fact that I'm a Windows, Linux and Android user that won't change soon are some clear disadvantages if I go the Mac route. I need a laptop for work, photo and video editing on the go with enough power to edit 4K footage and photos of my A7iii and with 8+ hour battery(and to charge via USB C) of web browsing, email and light photo or sketch(from my iPad Pro 2018) editing. I want something under 4.5-4.7 pounds, but anything lighter is welcome, with minimum 2 TB3 ports(1 is enough if it excels in other categories) [link] [comments]
Visual Designer looking to upgrade- $1500-$2000 budget Posted: 02 May 2019 06:52 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: I'm a designer who'll be graduating this year so i'll be out in the working world soon. For 4 or 5 years now i've been using a MacBook Pro 13' which i believe is a 2013 model (its got a cd drive if that helps). Its really slowed down but i've really loved it. Its been reliable the whole time i've had it and besides slowing down i've never had any hardware issues, not a single crash or anything. unfortunately it's just too old now so i'm looking to upgrade. I'm in australia and have a budget of $2000 and less. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm not looking for a 2 in 1, battery life is helpful but i've always got my charger with me so it's not an aspect that is super important. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all. I carry it around a lot but it's just in my bag so a little extra weight isn't a bother. I'd also like something with a range of ports so i'd much prefer something heavier or thicker if it means more options for ports. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Being able to retain everything that's stored on my current laptop is essential, don't think that would effect os choice to much though. Been using Mac os primarily for a while now and really like it. It would make transferring everything and getting started easier if i got a mac seeing as i got time machine backups and everything. That being said, i'm also very comfortable with windows and if i'm still able to get all my files and data over, even if it takes longer, i'm willing to do it. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. As i'm designing i'm using a lot of different software. Mostly using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, a few other adobe softwares every now and then. other than that, the software i'm using is pretty basic, just itunes, textedit, maybe a game every now and then, something simple like stardew valley, i'm not looking to play any sort of intensive games. **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?* * Like i said above, just a few simple titles like stardew valley, minecraft. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? not an absolute requirement, but something that i've loved about my mac pro is the trackpad. It's been the only one i've used that's actually felt like it 100% worked and was responsive. To the point where if i'm just browsing i'll use it over a mouse and even use it for small movements and adjustments while designing stuff in indesgin, illustrator etc. So something with a good trackpad would be nice, but not essential. I'm happy to adapt to just using a mouse. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. i've been looking at the dell XPS 13 and newest MacBook Pro 13'. My worries with the mac are that the ssd is small enough that i'd require an external drive. This compunds with the other issue which is that the total lack of ports on it. Having to use external cables just so i can have a hard drive and a mouse plugged in at the same time is frustrating, and buying these accessories will only add to the cost. I've also not really liked where apples design in terms of their computers has been going these last few years and i'm worried that if i invest in another apple laptop i'll be too entrenched in their system and will have to spend more or use products that are designed with form in mind more than function. I'm hoping to escape that a bit by branching out with this purchase. that being said, i've had so little hardware problems with this computer and have seen so many windows users have frustrating hardware problems with the laptops they've used that i'm hesitant to switch. The xps seems good for me, but my main worry is the whole process of getting set up. It may sound silly, but over the years i've really streamlined how i use this computer, i'm super efficient on it now and know how it works really well. I'd have to restart that process again and get back up to speed with windows. I'm also unsure of the process of transferring all my files and data. Like i said i've got time machine backups but i don't want to lose anything in the process of switching systems Thank you for reading this very long post and for any suggestions! :) [link] [comments]

Help With Multi-Display Connection Posted: 02 May 2019 05:10 AM PDT Not sure if I'm in the right place, but here goes. My boss at work just got a new laptop and docking station. He used to have a desktop and everything worked just fine. He has two DVI-D monitors on his desk and one of them comes off of a splitter that also goes to a TV on the wall via HDMI. As of now I cannot figure out how to get the second monitor to duplicate (much less come on) when using the adapter and splitter needed since the dock only has two DisplayPort ports. Temporarily we are just connecting the second monitor directly to the dock via a DP to DVI-D cable, but we really need to be able to mirror to the TV as well. Any suggestions? For the life of me I cannot find any DisplayPort to 2x DVI-D adapters anywhere. [link] [comments]
Laptop has no hard drive all this time??! Posted: 02 May 2019 03:55 AM PDT Hi guys I have a dell Inspiron 5570 and recently in the BIOS diagnosis, the fan has been apparently not working. I opened it up and cleaned the fan which was quite dirty and then out it back together. Booted it up and it said 'hard drive not detected/installed'. I then opened it back up again and apparently, I have no hard drive..... (watched a video on dismantling the HD and when I opened mine I couldn't see anything). How in the **** has it been operating all this time and how do I fix this? Please help! [link] [comments]

Can I get a laptop/Tablet that does all this. . .? Posted: 01 May 2019 11:23 PM PDT I've only ever used desktop PCs, but I want to start traveling in a few months. I intend to travel for a long, long time, and I was planning on getting a tablet or laptop. I want something that:
I've looked at the latest Surface Pros and they do seem pretty good. I've looked at the Dell XPS-15's as well. The thing I like about the surface pro is that the keyboard is detachable and the whole thing looks pretty light. Any recommendations, guys? Should I be looking more at laptops or tablets? Posted: 02 May 2019 02:48 AM PDT Hi! I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 model p66f001. The display is horrendous. It has washed out colors, it is dim and has shit viewing angles. I want to replace it with something better. Is there a way to do this? Are Dell displays compatible as far as connectors go? Did anyone attempt something similar? What should I be looking out for? I expect the only things I need to pay attention to are the physical size and the connector type. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2019 01:48 AM PDT Do they work? I am not using them to push performance but rather to lower the temperature only what do you guys recommend? [link] [comments] |
