What is Disney Circle and what exactly does it do?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Hi! Total tech idiot here. My parents bought a device called a Disney Circle to monitor my family's internet usage, and I'm really curious about what it can and cannot do. I know it uses ARP spoofing to do its job and that you can bypass that, but I don't know if that's possible on my cheap little tablet. I try to understand the information I look up online, but like I said before, I'm not very technologically literate, and I really don't know what I'm reading or doing. All I know is that my parents always seem to know where I've been online, and I'm an adult. Please help!

10Gb home fiber infrastructure. Mikrotik experience or alternatives?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 01:05 PM PDT

Hey Everyone, first of, hope you're having a wonderful day!

I'm looking to try and set up a fiber backbone that will realistically be able to do 10Gb today and if possible move to 40Gbe+ later on down the line. current infrastructure is 2 servers, one for vm's /plex provider(unraid), the other acting as both high speed nas and longterm HDD storage (timemachine backups and the like)(freenas). on the network we typically see 15 devices at the low point with a maximum of around 40. everything from phones to laptops to proper workstations, networked receivers etc.. Everything is currently running 1gbe rj45, except for workstations which are a combination of 2 or 4 1gbe links bonded

few things: reason for fiber backbone is that the total length of the space is 100' by 50' 2 floors, not to mention that we'd be able to upgraded the receivers down the line if/when the need or opportunity arrises for a network upgrade. my current thinking for the network is to deploy Mikrotik switches because of their support for 4*10Gb SFP+ on inexpensive switches (crs305 and crs309)

    Thoughts?

Proposed set up is as such, from top down view https://imgur.com/a/O5l8bKV

    Router + Gateway

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:47 PM PDT

So I've got a router/modem combo gateway surfboard (what are they called?) in my apartment and it works just fine.. for me. I have no issues with my desktop PC via Ethernet, nor with my laptop from the bedroom, but my boyfriend constantly complains about the WiFi.

I have noticed that my download speeds via Ethernet are almost triple than what can be reached on my laptop via WiFi, but I assumed it was because my laptop's WiFi adapter isn't the best.

    So I have 3 questions:

    1. I'm looking into buying a coax extender + another coax cable to move the gateway to a more central location. Will this make a difference?
    2. Should I buy an additional router? would it work on a gateway that already technically has WiFi?
    3. Or should I rid myself of the gateway altogether and get a router and a modem? I used to have this setup before I moved in with my boyfriend - he got the gateway without me having any say. I figured gateways had improved by now, but I've heard they are still bad. Are they?

Requesting advice with a simple network

    Posted: 02 May 2019 12:47 PM PDT

I live in a very old house (actually 2 joined together) which has a thick central wall of sandstone. I have tried various methods to get past this and none have been overly successful. I have decided the only way to get decent wifi on both sides of the house is by a wired connection between the 2 sides.

My ISP is Sky but they have recently made it easier to use 3rd party routers and I am looking to upgrade my old sky hub to something with dual band and a more stable wifi. My wireless access point on the otherside of the house needs at least 3 ethernet ports.

My speeds aren't great at the present 16down and 0.5up I am looking for advice on what router/WAP to get preferrably that work without having to go crazy on the settings.

    Thanks in advance.

    Choosing a VPN router

    Posted: 02 May 2019 06:17 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a router (preferably not expensive) to configure Surfshark on. They have 6 options listed on their support page, but I'm not a particularly technical person, so I have no idea what the differences between these 6 are. Basically, I want something I can set up and forget. Any personal experience/suggestions will be very appreciated.

Speed Test High / In-Game Bad Lag

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:54 PM PDT

Recently over the past 2 weeks my room mate and I have started to experience lag in our gaming across all the games we play. Running speed test gives us the a download of 160+ mpbs and upload of 10+ mbps.

    We are stumped. Any suggestions?

Requesting Network advice for property with multiple units

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:14 PM PDT

My friend's dad wants to increase his Wi-Fi coverage efficiency across his property. The property holds two buildings in an area of approximately 50x50 meters. The main building is 4 stories high: the first floor being a Hair Salon and the other three floors are each separate apartment units. The other building is an Airbnb which has two different units and is located behind the main building.

As of right now, I'm pretty sure he's using a single integrated modem/router to provide Wi-Fi access across the entire property. Needless to say, the traffic across the network often gets congested to the extent that it becomes unusable.

I'm a first year IT college student so he's asked me if I could lend him a hand in installing a Wireless WiFi Repeater to solve the issues. I'm no expert in networking, but to my understanding repeaters are garbage (even the expensive ones) and I don't think they would do anything in this situation… Correct me if I am wrong.

My first thought was to suggest to him that he should connect a switch to his edge router, and from the switch run a single Ethernet cable to each unit of the main building and let the tenants deal with buying their own routers if they want Wi-Fi in their units. Also, that he should run another cable from the switch to one of the Airbnb units, and then connect it to another router which would provide Wi-Fi access to both Airbnb units.

However, I don't think he'll be willing to spend that much on new network equipment and set-up (e.g. 1 switch, 1 router, running multiple RJ-45s inside the walls across the entire property). I also don't think his current tenants would be pleased to have their Wi-Fi access taken away from them and having to buy their own routers.

I would like to present to him multiple solutions, but since I am still a noob in networking I don't have much to offer. Any opinion/solutions/advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

Two not so identical monster routers from Spectrum -- would like your thoughts

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Hoy. Spectrum offers some beast mode routers apparently. I didn't realize how powerful they were. In any case, I'm puzzled by some info at WikiDevi and would appreciate your input.

Spectrum offers three variants of the same router, from three manufacturers:

    RAC2V1A: Arris (USA)

    RAC2V1K: Askey (Taiwan)

    RAC2V1S: Sagemcom (France)

Setting aside Sagemcom for now, since its page is missing data, there's a discrepancy between the specs for the Arris and Askey models. They both have a MIMO config of 4x4:4 for their first module. This module apparently handles an + ac.

However for their second modules the Askey shows 4x4:4 while the Arris shows 3x3:3. This module handles bgn.

The relevant chip is slightly different. The Askey has the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9984 for the second module, which is the same chip that they both have for their first modules.

However the Arris is listed as having the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9983 for its second module.

Is this plausible? Do you think it might be an error?

Also, am I right to think that these are badass routers? What's a good comparison router with a 4x4:4 configuration?

    Unable to ping to container

    Posted: 02 May 2019 06:49 PM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I am setting up nextcloud on LXD inside my Ubuntu 18.04 headless server and am facing a problem with connectivity from LAN to the nextcloud in the container. My setup looks like this.

So from the diagram, I can ping from LXD to internet (8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9, 1.1.1.1 etc.), I can ping to 192.168.1.30, 192.168.1.1 and also the host 192.168.1.31 itself, and I am even able to ping to the users in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet connected to the wireless access point. However, I am unable to ping from PC to container, ufw is disabled for both host and container. I am able to ping to host computer(192.168.1.31) from my laptop but not container. So what is the problem with my connection?

    Thanks in advance guys!

    What am I looking at?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 07:05 AM PDT

I am buying a house and am pretty pimped that it is pre wired with cat5. The linked image is of the network closet.

    network closet

I get that there is the switches but it looks like they plug directly into the green panel and then another wire comes out of the green panel and enters the conduit to it's destination.

I think this work was done some time ago so could probably use an upgrade of some hardware (eg. >100mbps switches) but I would love some insight on what I'm getting into.

    Thanks!

How do you wire up telephone service with a voice modem?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 05:51 PM PDT

Hello everyone -- Say you have a "voice modem", which is a cable modem + telephony device. It has two RJ-11 ports. How do you connect it to a telephone? Do you plug a telephone into the voice modem directly, or do you plug the voice modem into a wall phone jack or what? Here's the Spectrum device (PDF, one page).

Anything better than Orbi right now?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:59 PM PDT

    TDLR at the bottom

Last week I was having issue with my Ubiquiti setup and I simply didn't have time to fix it. Been working 6-7 days a week mostly 12 hour days. Ubiquiti is great when it works but tougher to trouble shoot. I had a complete Unifi system router, switch, two APs and cloud key. Of course my family isn't patient so I sent my wife to Walmart to get an Orbi (RK50) after a very very quick internet search showed it to be the best. Speeds are fine throughout the house and have no complaints so far though I am still working non stop and havent done in depth testing but coverage is as better than Ubiquiti in my yard.. I haven't touched any settings beyond initial setup. Well Walmart charged $40 more in store than there online price and they won't adjust after the fact. Well I am going to order a replacement off Amazon and they can have there's back. I am fine ordering another Orbi but since I have a bit of time I am open to other options.

1500 square foot house with me, my wife, 19 year old son and 13 year old daughter. Main thing is coverage and I tried many regular routers plus a LR Ubiquiti and none reach my master bathroom. So I need a mesh or multi AP solution. At this point I am looking for a more consumer rather than prosumer solution. I've moved on from Android techie to Apple it just works mentality.

TDLR;: What's the best mesh consumer option out there.

TP-Link or Asus router - thoughts?

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:29 PM PDT

Hi guys, just wanted to know, which one of these routers are better 1. as a router and 2. as a AP

    TP-Link Archer C7

    Asus RT-AC66U

Now I am using Asus as my router and TP-link as AP point (ap mode). Is there any difference between these or it doesn't matter at all?

There is one thing which I find very annoying and it's the lagg spike every 10 minutes or so. I can notice it when playing games and ping goes up to 300 then back to 20 in a matter of 2 seconds. I am not sure how can I help/improve my network so that's also why I am here asking your opinion.

    Thanks for any tips.

Router with most reliable (fast) wifi? Problems streaming media from Plex server

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:25 PM PDT

We sometimes like to watch movies & TV shows from my Plex server on our living room TV. For the past several months though, the playback from the Plex server sometimes pauses randomly when watching on that TV. My house is not wired for ethernet, so currently I have everything connected via wifi. I'd rather not wire the house for ethernet if I don't have to. I've noticed that TV sometimes doesn't connect to wifi when I power it on, but if I go into its network setup and manually reconnect, it connects successfully. Also, the other day, I noticed my Plex server PC got disconnected from our wifi and was trying to connect to another (neighbor's?) wifi hotspot. I'm curious if I may need to buy a new router, as I've had my current one (an Asus RT-N66U) for maybe 6 or 7 years.

This is the list of devices involved with this setup:

    • TV: Samsung UN55JS8500, currently set up to use wifi (currently mounted on the wall in a corner in our living room - There are several walls between it and our router)
    • Router: Asus RT-N66U
    • Plex server: Home-built PC with an Intel i5 (SandyBridge, 2###) processor, 16GB RAM, running Linux Mint. Connected via wifi using a TP-Link TL-WDN4800 wifi card.

IP source is a dedicated server in Poland.

    THEN

    FW.WANATTACK DROP , 16 Attempts, 2019/4/26 03:58:01

I don't have a source IP for this.

I also have been getting these every day, not sure when they started because I reset my router and can't tell if they go before that. I could not log into my router because I (thought) I had forgotten my admin password. They go back to the day I reset my router.

    Arris DG3450 Gaming Issues

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:44 PM PDT

I seem to be having issues with my Arris DG3450 gateway. It is provided by my ISP and is the only real option i have for my gigabit service currently due to budget constraints. My gaming pc is currently wired to the gateway directly via ethernet and I tend to get random net drops in game that disconnect me from servers. If I'm quick to check it will generally switch from the icon for ethernet internet in the task bar to wifi with the little yellow issue icon and then switch back to ethernet and be fine. I've also noticed poor connections to servers that should otherwise provide excellent ping. For instance I'm in California and say connecting to an Los Angeles based server should net me a decent sub 50ms connection and it will be routinely over 130ms sometimes cresting 200ms.

This had all started happening when my ISP switched to this new gateway. When I run speed test I get good speeds 800mbs plus with 30 down and my ping is always around 10-20 but my jitter always seems suspect. yesterday I had a ping of 10 with a jitter of 14 in a speed test. I'm not sure its all the gateways fault but I assume that being it is set to factory settings there is at least room for improvement in setting it up for my application. I am unsure of what else to inspect or try to alleviate these issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Wireless isolation issues

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I started hating Wireless Isolation, (Wireless Client Isolation)

I mean it is great to have, because I have no idea how many people have the Wifi password. So I turned Wifi Isolation ON. This way I don't have to worry too much about who is accessing the network.

Few months later I couldn't figure out, why can't I access the router, can't ping, can't do Web interface (192.168.1.1),

Can't do anything over Wifi :(

Then I got a Pihole (DNS server and Ad-blocker) 192.168.1.2 Again, can't do anything over Wifi, can't use SSH, no web interface, no ping etc...

I would like to keep Wireless Isolation ON but is there a way to be able to access the router and PiHole over Wifi, without turning off the WiFI Isolation OFF everytime?

Putting an unmanaged switch between a modem and router

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:02 PM PDT

So I don't know a ton about networking and was wondering if this is possible. A buddy of mine lives in an apartment with roommates, and is always dropping his connection on his xbox and computer (wifi connected).

The apartment is set up with a front room (where the router is) and a long hallway with bedrooms leading to a utility closet where their modem is. There's a cable run from the modem to the front room, connecting the two. I'm trying to get him to hard-wire his devices. Could he put an unmanaged switch in between the modem and router and have the router manage DHCP for both devices, or is that not possible. If not, I guess he'd need to move the router back, and either get another router or some sort of WAP for the front room / wifi?

Router in question is a tp-link TL-WR940N if that matters.

Unifi POE devices getting power, but not data

    Posted: 02 May 2019 09:58 AM PDT

I ran 17 Cat6 cables in the house and terminated them at the patch panel via keystones and RJ45 connectors at the devices. I wired the connectors as 568A for both ends. Then connected the keystones in the patch panel to the switch via a patch cable.

I need advice on why my Unifi POE devices (APs and cameras) are getting power but no connection. The POE switch status lights only shows the orange POE light and no green link light. The devices show up fine if I connect directly to the switch, which I did for setting them up. But once there connected to the patch panel they don't show up in the controller, but they get power.

Should I of made the connections with 568B connections? Is it possible all the terminations are fucked and need to redo?

    Any help would be great!

    Connecting multiple routers

    Posted: 02 May 2019 05:54 AM PDT

I have a business that has multiple routers set up which all connect to one main modem. They all have different SSID's as they all serve different purposes and different people and clients connect to them, so I cant simply set them up as acces points as some devices on some networks are private.

I have recently set up a NAS on one of the networks, and wondered if there was a way to acces it through some (but not all) of the different routers. I'm pretty new to networking so i'm not even sure what to google...

If someone has any resources or so where I could learn more about all this then that would also be highly appreciated.
