For college (Comp Science) laptop anywhere between 500 and 1100 USD, USA Posted: 14 May 2019 01:17 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* Upto 1100 USD **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Doesn't really matter. Preferably slim **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Doesn't matter as long as I don't need to build muscles just to carry the fucking thing around **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows/Linux **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* N/A **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* For college, computer science. Very light gaming **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* CSGO, whatever FPS. **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Not my top priority, but I would prefer the laptop to have good build and a nice keyboard. Touchscreen and FP reader etc are not required. **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* Cannot get secondhand thinkpads where I live. A nice screen would also be a plus because I'll be watching movies and I regularly visit certain websites for.... scientific research. Don't need 1050ti or better. In face, I'm pretty sure CSGO should be able to run on integrated graphics. Hopefully shouldn't feel like plastic. [link] [comments] |
Best price to performance laptop for 700 USD Posted: 13 May 2019 06:44 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** US, 650- 750 USD (the 750 USD is as high as I am able to go, plus or minus $10 -$15) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I would like best specs for the money, and 5 or more hours of battery life on light load * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** The thinner the better, but Specs are more important to me. I would not like anything over 1 inch in thickness, though. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6 down to 14 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I was planning on using Blender, Fusion 360, Photoshop, Unity. Some light online gaming. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I really don't plan to be running more intensive games in the near future, but I want to be able to run nearly anything at above 30 FPS * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I would like it to have a dedicated graphics card, and I really do NOT want an optical drive. I would like to have a machine with minimal keyboard flex, and windows precision drivers. I am looking for something with both a 2.5 inch SATA drive bay and a m.2 or PCIE SSD slot. I would much rather have a new laptop than a used laptop, and need at least 2 USB 3.0 and a Displayport or HDMI connector, and consider user Upgradability very important. Thunderbolt 3 Would be nice, but is by no means a necessity. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** My current laptop is the HP ProBook 4530s, i3 2350m. I have replaced the Thermal compound, Swapped the HDD for a SSD, replaced the broken fan, and added a stick of RAM. The only further upgrades that are realistically possible is to upgrade the CPU, but that is not going to give much performance boost, or I could connect an external GPU through the ExpressCard Slot. I have 2 more years until college, so I would like this laptop to still be functional and fast in 4 years. [link] [comments] |

Something light for taking notes, under $300. Posted: 13 May 2019 06:44 PM PDT
About $300 or less, purchasing in the continental US.
Preferably 2-in-1 with good battery life. Performance is of least importance, as long as it can be used for basic schoolwork.
The smaller, the better.
Windows is preferred, but not necessary.
N/A
Nothing that requires significant power. Just Microsoft Office/LibreOffice and drawing.
Touchscreen is a must.
I'm helping a friend shop for something to use for school. They want to spend as little as possible, and need something small and lightweight that can hold a charge for most of the day. They're an artist and would like something with a decent touchscreen so they have something to practice on when they're away from home. I've suggested a refurbished Chromebook, but they want to know if we could get something running Windows for around the same price. It looks like we're pretty limited at this price range, but they want a second opinion. [link] [comments] |

Need a laptop for a Research Student Posted: 14 May 2019 12:03 AM PDT Hey everyone, looking for a laptop that can meet my performance needs. My current performance needs are lying within the high multi-tasking and high ram (Tabs for days as I'm working on many different projects and cross-referencing). On top of that, i have many excel, and word documents open simultaneously, also part of the cross-referencing. I write A LOT, so a really good keyboard along with this laptop would be great, and if possible, the ability to flip it and draw on it would be incredible. I want something durable, and will last me, i don't game at all, just work, so i don't need a good graphics card. SSD would be a necessity as i don't care about on-board space, just boot speed for the pc and programs. Here's my request following the form format: * Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: < 700-1000 (CAD) * How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?
* Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. More space to see excel documents, the better. Not entirely indifferent, but something too weighty is an issue. * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Chrome, but very many tabs at the same time (Chemist / Research student) Excel, Microsoft word, many documents and PDFs on at the same time Mainly a build that puts a preference on the operation speed, and ram size, video card doesnt matter at all. Also, SSD for booting up every program and the laptop itself. * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A touch screen would be great, especially if it can be drawn on to. I think this person im getting it for would get a lot of use out of it. If that's inconceivable, a really good keyboard is essential as this person is a writer, and does mainly writing. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Needs to be able to multi-task optimally, boot the computer quickly, and be able to have a lot of tabs open in chrome simultaneously. [link] [comments] |

Affordable and practical work/ movie machine Posted: 13 May 2019 11:09 PM PDT Hi guys thanks for taking the time to read and help out. I need a new computer for work, everything is done over the cloud so I don't need to install any large software but I need it to be decent and reliable. Pick or include any that apply. Decent battery life to last me through classes. Can handle gaming How important is weight and thinness to you? Thin and light weight are very important to me as I will be carrying this around 24/7 Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Would like a 15.6 inch screen (I think that's the actual size for a 15 inch laptop?!?) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be an Engineering student if that helps any. I would like to run most triple A titles at 60 FPS If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No specific games but I want access/ability to play new games. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Is there a Clevo P750TM1 sold without the graphics card? Posted: 13 May 2019 09:58 PM PDT I've been looking for a music production laptop for a while and have finally found one that meets most of my criteria; however, I was hoping I could save on expense and power consumption by relying on the i9's iGPU since that's sufficient for my needs. Unfortunately, even a site I found that sells a barebones version still comes with the GPU included. Is there any way I can get a 15.6" system with an i9-9900k running integrated graphics? 70% study / note-taking/ stats. 20% music/video production. 10% gaming. Posted: 13 May 2019 09:41 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $2000 AUD - Australia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 essential as I want to be able to take notes with a pen in tablet mode/form. Good battery is always a bonus. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Switching from a 2016 Macbook Air because I'm not a fan of the MacOS workflow. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12.5" + Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will mostly be used for productivity (excel, word, outlook and onenote) and statistical analysis (SPSS), some light video editing (DaVinci resolve), music editing (Reaper DAW) and the occasional game (Warcraft 3 reforged/CivVI hopefully!) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Warcraft 3 reforged, CivVI, Heart of Iron - as close to 1080p 60fps as possible though I'm realistic about framerate probably being lower than that. Overall, gaming is a low priority compared to the productivity. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good digital pencil / note taking ability Reliable Good battery and keyboard preferred. Least amount of bloatware where possible. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So basically I'm aiming to replace my 2016 Macbook Air and 2018 iPad with one device for notetaking, word processing, stats and some light youtube/music production and light gaming. I've looked at the Lenovo Yoga c930 and really liked the way it has a pencil silo but it quite expensive ($2300+ AUD) and worse performance vs. competitors on the benchmarks I've read. The HP x360 spectre looked good but has a poor trackpad (wouldn't mind if it was average) and filled with bloatware. The base level surface book 2 looks good too but looks like it may be refreshed relatively soon and doesn't come with a pencil and not sure I like the hinge too much (not really a dealbreaker though). Any other suggestions? [link] [comments] |
student looking for 14-15.6" for editing/school Posted: 13 May 2019 07:08 PM PDT Apologies for bad formatting Total budget and country of purchase: around 1200-1600AUD, Australia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? not too picky in weight, as long as its around the 5 pounds/2.2kg area. don't mind thinness as long as its not very thick Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? Either 14 or 15.6 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video and audio editing for school work using premiere pro and audition, may even use photoshop. Also lightish gaming If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would play mainly older games from the last decade but would like the chance to play things like Skyrim, CSGO and cities skylines on medium to high graphics. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A screen that isn't difficult to read in direct sunlight Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: I currently use a MacBook Pro 13inch mid 2017 model. if I could get something that is a nice improvement for the price range listed that would be great. should also mention I would like 16gb of ram and potentially a dedicated GPU. Long lasting laptop that can run Linux <$1000 Posted: 13 May 2019 06:19 PM PDT I'm a CS major who is looking for a new laptop. Form-Factor: Indifferent about fold-able or touch screen features. Should be light and fairly thin. Would prefer aluminum. Screen: >13", LCD, Bright, Text looks good Battery: Should be able to easily last a whole day. I'm looking for something that will last as long as a macbook pro. Keyboard: Preferably backlit, good travel, and clicky. Avoiding macbooks due to recent keyboard issues. Trackpad: Ideally would be glass, but most important thing is that it works well and support multigesture on linux distros like Ubuntu Specs: >=8GB, i5, >128GB SSD Other: I really like the macbook pro build quality since there is very little flex, however, they are out of my budget and have a lot of issues on the recent releases. So I am looking for something that can provide a similar build. Also, would like the laptop to last at least 3-4 years without significant battery deterioration or slowdown. I was considering the recent XPS 13, but I have read about a few people having issues with it, including battery bulge, which I dealt with before and would like to avoid. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 May 2019 05:24 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 1000€, Portugal. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent battery life, good specifications. Don't care at all about 2 in 1. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very much. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I will use Windows. Can install it afterwards, though. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" tops, but smaller than that if possible. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe some CAD, MATLAB, light gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rocket League, CS:GO. 60FPS is enough. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touchscreen, IPS screen and decent build quality at least. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I guess I would sacrifice light gaming in order to get a better deal for a laptop with Intel Graphics but with everything else I just mentioned. [link] [comments] |

Help with finding laptop for soon-to-be mechanical engineering younger brother Posted: 13 May 2019 01:28 PM PDT I've recently been back and forth between this subreddit and r/buildmeapc for myself but now I'm looking for someone else. My brother is going into his first year of college and is starting early so we would appreciate some help with finding him a laptop. He's an incoming mechanical engineering student who games relatively often. His school has some specific minimum requirements for the laptop that I will include. Thanks in advance!

Upgrading my old Inspiron 7000 Posted: 13 May 2019 12:45 PM PDT My laptop is now about 2 and a half years old and I'm really beginning to notice especially when attempting to game. I replaced the 8gb ssd with a 250gb ssd and added another 8gb of Ram for a total of 16gb when I first purchased it. That helped boost its performance but unfortunately this 960m graphics card seems to be very outdated now and that is something I am unable to replace. I've been looking at a replacement laptop and these are standing out the most. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CD3MRZF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_g7i2CbN9EYEQ6 https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GP63041-Leopard-041-Performance-i7-8750H/dp/B07C94K74F Although, really the only upgrade this laptop has over my current one is the 1050ti card. Should I pay a bit more and get something better with a new RTX card? I was hoping to spend around $1,000 but I can probably stretch my budget to around $1,400 if it's really worth it. Here are a few I found. https://www.amazon.com/Customize-PROSTAR-NH58EDQ-Display-i7-8750H/dp/B07Q4766NF/ https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834155078 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834271142 I currently use my laptop for everything. From doing homework to playing games like Gta V and WoW. I tried playing this Star Citizen game but was getting about 5 FPS on my current laptop. I have plans on getting a computer but that won't be until around December. So I'll be be required to do all of my computing on whatever laptop I choose until then. I don't mind the laptop being heavier if that makes it cheaper. 144hz would be nice as well but not a necessity. And I was hoping for a RGB keyboard but it looks like all those laptops are $1,600+. I'd just like to make sure I get something I won't regret. Thank you for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |
