Please Help Me Find A Laptop Under $1000

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 11:32 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of the purchase: My maximum budget is 1000 USD, I will purchase it in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a 2 in 1 laptop, I really want a touchscreen, and if it can work with some type of pen, even better. I need 5 hours of battery at the very least, more is better for me. I would like an 8th or 9th gen Intel i5 or i7, at least 8GB of RAM, and at least 256GB of SSD Storage. Upgradability would be great.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care that much about weight, but I do prefer it to be as light as possible. I want a very solid build quality.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 10¨ to 14¨

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will use it mainly for writing articles for my WordPress website, having around 5 chrome tabs open at a time. Sometimes very light Adobe Illustrator use.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? This doesn`t matter.

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a very good keyboard since I will be writing a lot, I want very good build quality, a touch-screen, and several USB ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a student discount from Microsoft, I don't know what other brands offer that. I currently have a Dell Latitude 7275 but the battery is starting to fail and even if I replace it, it will not last enough for me.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Maximum 16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Kinda. The games I mostly will run is Minecraft or Geometry Dash. I also wanna edit eome videos.

    Laptop for a developer

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:54 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: under 1300 USD NYC or 90,000INR anywhere in India

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best value for money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I have ruined my back carrying 3Kg laptop everyday

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Definitely Linux If at all impossible then a laptop which has good driver support for linux is also okay

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A but would be nice if it's small

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be running these all the time: Android Studio VSCode/Atom Jupyter Notebook I am an aspiring ML/DL engineer so it would be nice if I could be able to run gpu tasks inside my laptop instead of renting Cloud services but I get that it's difficult so please mention any ideas that you might have regarding this as well if you are in a similar situation

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is a must I would certainly expect good build for the price all the other things are just a gimmick for me and I will be happy to get it if it's possible but if not possible then leave it

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will need good specs or upgradable if it's not possible I require 16gb ram 128gb/500gb ssd/hdd combo is the minimum requirement but if I have 240gb ssd then I don't care so much about hdd I will just use external

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 vs. Lenovo Thinkpad T490S?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:53 AM PDT

I am having a hard time deciding between these two devices. They have roughly the same specs, with very different fit/finishes. The Lenovo seems to be much more recent (released earlier this month) with the Surface Laptop 2 debuting last year.

The price difference between the two units, base spec on both units, is around $50-100.

    My intended uses:

    • Medical grade software (Cerner EHR/EMR)
    • Document processing (Google docs, sheets, slides)
    • Media consumption (youtube, netflix, hulu, reddit)

Which unit is the right buy for me? The Surface Laptop 2 seems to be a favorite from 2018. It definitely has the advantage when it comes to the screen. But the Lenovo has that industrial fit/finish that will last for many years to come.

I will be doing a lot of typing on whichever unit I buy, so long-term reliability is key for me. I will also be hauling my laptop around with me daily.

As an additional note, the lack of ports does not bother me on the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2. I do not connect anything to my laptop other than the charger and Microsoft wins that comparison with its magsafe-like connector.

    Laptop for uni

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:35 AM PDT

Hi I'm going to uni soon and I need a nice laptop to use, my priorities weight (very low), screen size (not small) and also being VR ready.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Not sure of my budget yet so just not wildly expensive. I'm from the UK.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. None of these matter to me, as long as the battery lasts a day of uni because I don't mind charging them everyday

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? This matters a lot, as light and thin as possible please

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but I don't mind running windows on a Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not small, preferably large

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming like league of legends and VR

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As long as it's VR ready

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? None of these matter to me but a touch screen would be cool

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you :)

    Laptops heavier than Triton 500

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:32 AM PDT

I know that's a weird title but I've been looking at reviews of the Triton 500 RTX 2060 lately and I'm sold. Everything I want is in it and also in my Price point. Now I know that it's a 'Thin and light' gaming laptop. But I don't particularly need a thin/light gaming laptop, I just want specs. So is there any other laptop (maybe heavier) that at the same price, can offer better specs at the cost of being heavy/ bulky? (It's not that I hate thin laptops, but if there are better specs in a heavier laptop, I'll take it)

Huawei Matebook X Pro (2018) or HP Spectre x360 (2019) Laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:01 AM PDT

At first I wanted the HP Spectre x360 for its 2 in 1 function, but started to question how much I was actually going to use the tablet mode. I'm a college student entering my 3rd year and I've been taking notes on paper for my whole life. I don't know how well the switch would be from paper to tablet. Even so, the Spectre seems like a great laptop to have, but I was starting to look at other options as well and found the Matebook x Pro. The display and speakers seem better overall, as well as the touchpad since it has precision drives. Now I'm just on the fence about both. They're both relatively similar in specs as well. I'm also planning on using whichever laptop I get to do some programming. Any advice?

    · Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs

    · How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, mostly to move around the house and transportation will happen in the car.

    · Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing ridiculously small should be fine.

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Preferably casual gaming WoW (BFA), Diablo III, lighter steam games, etc. (the more it runs the better in the end). Netflix, casual internet business.

    · **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**See above, anything that doesn't make it look hideous will suffice for now.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be nice although not a must (I can hook a USB one to it at home). Anything else is nice but not necessary

    13" to 14"

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Searching Laptop 880 - 1100 dollars - for editing photos/videos and gaming

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 07:15 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

1100 dollars is my maximun budget, i'll purchase in Chile.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.\*

I would like a 2 in 1 but it is not really important. I need a battery that lasts at least 5 hours, the more the better. I do not handle the technical specifications very well, but I suppose I need a good processor, good RAM and a good video card to run my programs and games in the best way.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?\*

Just do not be excessively heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.\*

I prefer Windows or Mac, really doesn't matter.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.\*

    13 " to 16 "

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.\*

Editing on photoshop, davinci resolve, premiere, lightroom. Games: GTA V, FIFA, League of Legends, Fortnite.
I hope to run games that come out in the future.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?\*

With medium-high settings and enough FPS to make it look smooth and without sticking.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?\*

Only a quality keyboard and inputs.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I hope the notebook gives me a good experience for at least five years. Sometimes I will have several tabs or programs open at the same time and I hope it is not a problem. Thanks for reading and for your help, in advance and forgiveness for my English.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 10:29 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 CAD, preferably under $800, and Canada. * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery life, at least around 5 hours, at least 8GB of RAM, and either at least 265 SDD or 1TB HDD. * How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight, under around 4lbs, because I have to bring it around quite often, and as for thinness, thinner would be better (but not too much). However, not 'fragile' enough that I would have to bring a case with it. * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Either 14" or 15"6 or anything in between. * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just light video/picture editing, some animation/art programs, etc. Plus, a lot of tabs in Chrome open. * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A comfortable keyboard, and if possible, a smooth mousepad (like, the one on the laptop). Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I do have a 10% coupon at Staples, so if there's any laptops that fit my requirements there, that would great!

Laptop for College/Daily Life; No Rush

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 10:19 PM PDT

I currently have a teal HP x360 I bought 5 years ago. It did not age well and I'm over it. I want to get a new laptop that will serve my needs for the next 5ish years (or longer!) of university and beyond. I'd like to have it by the Fall 2019 semester, I'm posting now so I can save up and consider all options/sales.

Total budget and country of purchase: No higher than $600; USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I currently have a 2 in 1 and don't find it useful, so I would like a normal laptop. Battery life should be over 3 hours. How important is weight and thinness to you? The lighter & thinner the better since I commute, but I understand price is restrictive so I'll take what I can get. Which OS do you require? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing over 14 inches, preferably around 12ish Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Using it for college (English/Education certification) and would like to use it after. Mostly running Microsoft office, web browsing, homework, and note taking. Some gaming and music as well. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want I like to play games on steam, right now the Sims 3 & Civilization games; no specific FPS Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad) I do not want a 2 in 1; backlit keyboard and matte screen are important; able to run for a decent amount of time without overheating is also important Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop is plastic and as I mentioned above teal, I would like something that looks more professional such as a neutral color or metal chassis. Lastly, I've always had HP laptops and would like to try a different brand if possible.

Is this worth it? Thinkpad X1 carbon 5th gen is on sale

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 05:56 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a new laptop after putting up with my Surface Pro 3 and it's keyboard for so long.

I am looking for a slim 13-14 inch laptop to use for programming/work applications. So nothing too intense. The laptop looking professional is helpful, as it will be in business meetings.

I saw today that the 5th gen Thinkpad X1 Carbons are on a large discount right now, and wanted to know what people thought of these specs for the price.

    Web Price:$1,679.00

    Okay this is an odd one. I'm writing a report for college and need three laptops to compare and contrast for the report. Since this subreddit helped me pick the laptop I currently use I figured i'd ask here. What I would like is;

The best college work laptop for 1,000: No gaming required just the best college work laptop you know of.

The best gaming laptop for 1,000: Simply the best gaming laptop for 1,000

A mixture of the above two options for 1,000: A laptop that is middle of the road for the two options. Not made as a gaming laptop but can do it.

I know this is strange and outta left field but i'd appreciate the help.

Best MacBook For An Incoming Computer Science Major

I know this has been asked numerous times before, but I haven't really found a relatively recent post about this.

I know all of the new 2018/2019 MacBooks will suffice, but I am just wondering what is the best bang for the buck. I will be doing mainly software related projects and video editing as a hobby. Portability is also a consideration, but not the biggest.

What would you guys recommend? Im thinking between the top of the line MacBook ($1,800), the new MacBook air (i5,16gb RAM, also $1,800) and the MacBook pro with the Touch Bar (i5, 16gb RAM, about $2,000).

    Thanks
