Windows screwed my Linux system on a different drive? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:39 AM PDT Hey everyone, so I have Linux mint installed on my ssd, and had windows installed on my hdd, and yesterday installed Linux on to the hdd, along with windows in a dual boot. Yesterday it was working fine and I was able to boot to all three systems and I was able to before I installed the dual boot. This morning, when I turned on my pc, I got the grub page. So wtf, I turned it off and then went to the boot menu. And windows boot manager was on my ssd? And windows boots fine. But booting Linux still shows grub. So I powered off and unplugged the hdd, and windows gives me the recovery page. So it seems that windows is still installed on my hdd but has spread its tentacles to the rest of my pc and messed up my Linux. Is there hope to recover my data from my original, ssd Linux? (I may have a timeshift snapshot which may be helpful, and to clarify, there's nothing on the Linux system that is installed along with windows so if that's gone, it's gone, but I really want the one on the ssd back.) Ubuntu 18.10 remains in sleep unplugged, but shuts down when plugged Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:15 PM PDT When I put my laptop to sleep while it's connected to power, it shuts itself down after some time. That does not happen when it's unplugged. Laptop: Dell Inspiron 15r 5537, core i5 Edit: My power settings. [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 18.10 waking up from sleep/close laptop lid the whole screen just gets glitchey Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:36 AM PDT And it keeps pushing me back to login screen every 3 minutes. The only way to fix it is to restart the machine. How do I fix this (other than stop using ubuntu and switch to arch)? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:11 AM PDT So I've somehow managed to mess up bigtime. I have a USB with Fedora 29 on it. Booted it up, had a 75gb partition in my D drive, and Windows 10 in my C drive. After I messed up the installation with fedora, I switched my PC off and turned it back on again. Now I'm getting this screen. Help. https://imgur.com/Pim2mBC [link] [comments] |
Bypass Privoxy for certain domains? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:42 AM PDT I use privoxy bundled into a docker, all my p2p traffic goes through it but I need to whitelist a specific site as they don't like VPNs, is it possible? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:39 AM PDT When I use Firefox with only noto-fonts installed, it'll show Google's Noto Font. But when I install ttf-liberation afterwards, it'll change the font to Liberation. Is there a way to set font priorities so Firefox will always show Noto Font despite others installed as well. I'm running Arch. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:41 PM PDT I've recently installed Ubuntu 18.10. Did not get to use it very much but today I've decided to give it a go. Installed tweak tool, custom theme and that's it, ready to partially move away from Windows. However I have noticed that the command Ctrl+A does not select the whole text (like I have encountered on any machine until now) but in fact it navigates the cursor to the beginning of the line. Is this the intended behavior or did I screw something up while playing with the tweak tool? Note: My Linux knowledge is mediocre at best. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |

Looking to install Linux for the first time. Need some advice. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:58 PM PDT Hey guys, I've been a Windows user all of my life, particularly Windows 7 in which I love. Windows 7 is ending soon, so when I got my new laptop a few days ago, I tried out Windows 10 only to be disappointed for various different reasons. So, Instead of downgrading to Windows 7 as I normally would, I have finally decided to make the jump to Linux. My only issue is finding out if there is a good amount of support for my particular machine. I picked up a Acer Spin 1, it's a 11-inch convertible laptop with a touch screen panel; 4GB of soldered RAM, an FHD screen, and a Intel Pentium 4200 processor. After doing some googling, I've decided to go with Linux Mint. The thing is, I have no idea if the touchscreen capabilities of my laptop would be supported, as well as the convertible screen. So I have come here today for help before I ultimately made the leap. Would my Linux Mint support my Laptop's touchscreen and convertible display? Thanks a lot in advance. [link] [comments] |
How can I restore a backup with bups ? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:33 PM PDT Yo, I just made a backup of my laptop with bups because I wanted to reformat it. However, whenever I do a restore, it gives me this error : no file 'quo-quo' in '/'. quo-quo is the name of my original backup. That is to say that I only have this folder now, it was stored on an external HDD. I made a folder called "backuplaptop" which contains the result of my original backup, at least I think. In it I have a branches (which is empty), hooks, info, logs, objects, refs, bupindex, bupindex.meta. config. description and head. I need this back up soon for school and I'd appreciate any help in getting my system data back on there. I tried bup restore /home/$USER/backuplaptop but no dice, it says I don't have a version or a branch. Any help is appreciated. Edit: added additional details [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:12 PM PDT Is there a word for being more of a noob than a noob? I know nearly nothing about linux other than its an OS, duh right? Long story short i want to learn linux. Im probably going to get ubuntu or mint and just run a VM for a while until i can at least learn to navigate the OS but eventually want to dual boot. My question here is where do even begin. Ive spent the last 2 hrs watching a 7 hr long linux for beginners video course on youtube and i dont know anything more than i already did 2 hrs ago. Why do i need to learn linux? Well im glad you asked. Long story short I am in the military, i just changed jobs and am in training for what boils down to systems admin/security. The course itself is some months long and while the army will train me on everything i need to know, i dont want the classroom to be the first time I'm ever seen the linux os. i believe the dod uses red hat but im not sure. Will it matter that i practice on ubuntu or mint or should i just get red hat from the get go? literally any advice is welcome. Side note i would also like to learn coding and i hear linux is good for that??? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:09 AM PDT So I will be starting a new job soon as a Developer / Programmer / Software Architect and will get a Laptop XPS 15 9570 with Windows 10 Pro. I suspect Linux might come in handy sometime but unsure on what to do: either go for a WSL config or go for dual boot. Both have benefits. Both have downsides. I have read a lot of issues with the dual boot option but it is more powerful than WSL. On the other hand, WSL might cause issues as well. Unsure. What would you recommend? As a work laptop, stability is important as well as compatibility (I will likely work a lot with others using Macs as well) Second question would be: which distro would you recommend in this scenario? Something seriously wrong and I'm not even sure where to start...here are the symptoms though: Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:22 AM PDT So my linux installation decided to get wierd on me today. I'm using Kubuntu 18.04 btw. It tells me I have updates so I go to update through the package manager "Discover" thing. I click update all and it asks me for my password, it ticks away doing its thing for about 10 minutes then just gives me the option to update again (after not actually updating anything). Thats wierd, I think to myself, so I go to the terminal and just try sudo apt-get update. It's not pretty in there after running that command. Theres a bunch of stuff in there that I wont bother pasting all of here (unless its asked for) but its essentially the same thing over and over: Err:5 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable Release.gpg At least one invalid signature was encountered. Err:3 http://linux.teamviewer.com/deb stable InRelease Splitting up /var/lib/apt/lists/linux.teamviewer.com_deb_dists_stable_InRelease into data and signature failed ...this continues for each thing that needs updating. Then towards the bottom of the output of apt-get update it repeats itself for everything that needs updating again except this time for each one it says something along the lines of: W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable Release: At least one invalid signature was encountered. Great... But thats not all folks! Other wierd things that are happening and could be related because they only started to happen today: I use Thunderbird as my main email client...I cant seem to send emails anymore. When I do I get the following error: Sending of the message failed. Error Temporary writing of file. The only other thing thats super wierd (and makes me think that this and the email thing are connected at least) is when I shut down my vagrant box in the terminal. For those that might not know, a Vagrant box is just a virtual machine that essentially acts a server for web development on my local machine. When I try and halt the box it gives me an error...the part that concerns me within the error: /opt/vagrant/embedded/lib/ruby/2.4.0/tmpdir.rb:86:in `mkdir': No space left on device @ dir_s_mkdir - /tmp/vagrant-fs-case-sensitive20190402-15900-11l8bcu (Errno::ENOSPC) ...no space left on device. I wonder if thats why my emails arent sending / saving in drafts...because it thinks theres no space left? Possibly there is some temp folder that for some reason doesn't want to be written into? I'm not even sure what to Google because I cant exactly Google everything I have written here in one query...I have tried some of the error messages but they dont really prove that fruitful. How do I solve all of this? I have restarted several times and its just the same. Basically I would like to be able to update my machine, send emails and also shut down my vagrant machine the normal way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if this is the wrong place for this then please feel free to point me in the right direction. EDIT: Another symptom...when I leave my computer and come back and the screen is locked it tells me the program that handles that has crashed and that I need to press x to go to terminal and enter x commands to fix it. This has happened several times now. EDIT EDIT: I feel like I should mention here that there is more than 100gb of free space on the hard disk. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:12 AM PDT Hi all, I am running Debian 9 as a server within VirtualBox and run as a headless system just SSH'ing into the machine when I need to use it. Every now and then after a reboot, I need to execute a manual fsck repair on /dev/sda1 in the console. After doing this, the system runs okay, but I have had to do this 3/4 times over a few months. I was just wondering what possibilities there are for causing this? Thanks! :) [link] [comments] |
Trying to install Ubuntu (Help!!) Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:37 AM PDT I tried to install Ubuntu 18, everything goes as expected, apparently, it initiates and enters the desktop but when then it shows a message saying it needs to reboot and when it does the screen goes all in black and the next commands (as the following picture). And when I start Ubuntu it gets stock after the login screen. I hope you guys can help me. Additional info: I have an SSD installed on my laptop (I don't know if it's part of my problem) Thank you! No password prompt to secured WiFi networks, cannot connect Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:34 AM PDT I'm running Manjaro Cinnamon and I can't connect to my university's secured WiFi. When I want to connect, there should be a window comming up where I enter my ID and password, but the loading animations next to the network name just keeps running and nothing ever happens. I can connect to a not-secured WiFi though. I've seen the problem on the Arch Wiki and installed the gnome-keyring, but it still doesn't work. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:04 AM PDT I started getting this a day ago. I've done some googling around and I understand what it means.
I've checked the repo and the release file was updated a couple of days ago. My question is this, is this something that regularly happens? I've never seen it before but all my debian systems have unattended upgrades enabled so I might just have missed it. Is it a reason to switch mirrors or will they sort it out? Edit: My /apt/sources.list in case there's actually a stupid mistake [link] [comments] |
Manjaro Active Directory Help! Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:59 AM PDT Hello for a class project I am required to have 6 Linux operating systems able to log in with Active Directory Users. Manjaro however is causing us issues. We have it appear in our Active Directory Users and Computers and Manjaro now has a login section on a start screen when we try to login it will just say password or user is invalid. So I went through every file possible and checked my config files I had to edit and they all checked out so I'm really stuck on what I did wrong. So any help is appreciated thank you.
