Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:59 PM PDT Hello! I've owned an Alienware M11x R2 since 2010 and while it's unable to play many modern games, it has endured. This thing has lasted me 9 years of heavy use, and it'll certainly reach the decade mark. In that time I've dropped it countless times and even rolled over it while sleeping, snapping the screen off it and having to buy a new one. However, it has survived. These machines redefine durable, at least in my experience. It's lasted well, but alas, a 1.20GHz Intel Core i7 640UM (4MB Cache, max turbo frequency 2.266GHz) + Nvidia GeForce GT 335M Discrete Graphics (1GB GDDR3) just do not cut it for anything anymore... So, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on my next purchase. I intend on it lasting me just as long as this laptop has, or as close as possible. It needs to be extremely durable, being able to survive a knock and tumble of the worst were to happen. Thermals should be as good as possible, as regular heavy strain and bad thermals would likely quickly give my laptop a sup-par performance. What suits me best, bearing these in mind? The design of the new M15 and M17 is pretty cool, although I do wonder how it compares with the thicker 15 r4 and 17 r5? Has anyone experience with these laptops? Are the M15 and M17 an all-round upgrade, being lighter, thinner, and just as powerful? Or is there a compromise of thermals, since they will be much more difficult to cool? Taking this into account, would a thicker laptop suit me better since I intend on keeping it a long time, and regularly overheating will jeopardise this? Are the thinner Alienwares less durable than their predecessors in your experience? I don't mind having a heavier and thicker laptop, providing it has benefits. I'd appreciate it if anyone could help me out. I'll be playing games on the laptop, and work away from home, so battery life is somewhat important (although other than journeys to and from wherever I'm working, I'll be able to use the laptop plugged in). What would suit me best? Any other recommendations? Any other advice or knowledge? I'd appreciate any input! Thanks a lot in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:10 PM PDT Mainly college work but also to do some light gaming. Lghtweight but can also be a 2-in-1 and should look somewhat nice too. Maximum budget is £300/400$. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:23 AM PDT I'm aware that it only has one usb-c that acts as a charging port for the laptop, however, can I use that usb-c port to charge my phone as well? Or plug in a usb-c thumbdrive? [link] [comments]
Is there anything negative about this laptop? Vivobook 15 X540UA Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:49 PM PDT So I'm looking to buy a laptop at around 500€, less would be better. After comparing multiple laptops I found this one: https://www.one.de/asus-vivobook-15-x540ua-dm437-notebook-90nb0hf1-m13300-37333#tab-Inklusive but it looks too good to be true, i5 & 8GB Ram + 250gb SSD. Am I not noticing anything or would this be a good buy? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:49 PM PDT In three different views: 1. style/aesthetics 2. Power/performance 3. Overall? Ive been having really contradictory thoughts recently I need a 13-14" for my briefcase, I began looking at the RB Stealth 13/xps13/zenbook etc I initially wanted the RB for aesthetics but decided I want to invest in a machine / company support that will last me at bare minimum 3 years. Which led me to focus on the thinkpads I've been looking at the x1 carbon with pretty much maxed components? [link] [comments]
GPU considerations for non-gamers Posted: 29 Apr 2019 11:57 PM PDT If you don't game, photoshop, or edit videos, would you still get a dedicated GPU? I do watch 4K movies but I think Intel supports decoding on-chip these days. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:16 PM PDT Bought a replacement OEM charger for an acer aspire e5 575g via ebay and while it has the acer logo, it looks much different and feels cheaper than the original. Is there a way to determine if it's a geniune product or at least safe to use? Support confirmed that new chargers rarely resemble the original. New charger/connector is green while red is the original. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:07 PM PDT I have a budget of around £350, which I know isn't a high budget but it's what all I can do. I currently own a simple iPad Air 2 - which causes difficulty when trying to work and generally doesn't cut it anymore. Im looking to sell this and upgrade; however I believe going for a 2 in 1 laptop would be the best option for me. I've taken advice from peers and it seems to me that I could find a perfect system for myself - I've started researching this, and I thought getting an opinion for a few experts on reddit will be a good start. Thank you! And have a nice day! [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:58 PM PDT I have a pretty beefy computer at home, and my lap top just broke. I was thinking I could buy a chromebook or something similarly cheap and RDP to a virtual machine on my PC at home so I can run a faster system. Does anyone have experience with this? An immediate issue are it would only be an only online machine, if I'm offline I have to use the native hardware. Anyone do this, or have thoughts? [link] [comments]

Acer Aspire One D150 and ubuntu Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:21 PM PDT I've recently gotten an old acer aspire D150, and I'm having trouble putting linux on it. Lubuntu and xubuntu work okay off a boot drive, but have random graphic glitches, where the screen shakes and windows get stuck moving back and forth. Slax and trisquel get missing system files, and I can't seem to add whatever is needed. Puppy linux seems to work best, although near the end of installation it fails. Could I use an older version of lubuntu ? I'd prefer Ubuntu distros over the others. Or is installing Linux not possible with this laptop? Thanks [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:23 AM PDT I'm thinking of getting a laptop for games like Monster Hunter, csgo, Apex legends, LOL, maybe assassins Creed and GTA. Also, I plan to be editing 1080p videos, Photoshop and maybe other stuff in the future idk. I'm planning on keeping this laptop for quite a while so I want it to be powerful. From what i saw online, the Alienware Area 51m seemed to be the most powerful but it's also huge and required 2 brick adapters whilst lasting only an hour or so after 1 charge. Help please, no negativity, and just kind advice, thank you! [link] [comments]
Looking at buying this Asus Zenbook. Thought? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:22 AM PDT This is the one in question: ASUS ZenBook Pro UX580GD-E2036T 15.6 Inch 4K Display Touchscreen Laptop - (Deep-Dive Blue) (Intel Core I7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia GTX 1050 Is it a good laptop? Possible upgrade to x1 extreme in 2019? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:15 AM PDT Dell just announced that they are putting the 9th gen i7 and 1650 into XPS 15 this year. What can I expect from X1 extreme? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:25 AM PDT I am about to enter university, and I need a laptop for school. After reading rave reviews of 2019's Dell XPS 13, I am enthusiastic on getting one. However, for some reason in Singapore, the options available are limited in brick and mortar stores here and I can't customise its specifications to my liking. Most of the retailers (excluding Dell Singapore's website) have these three SKUs along with the price tags in Singapore Dollars (converted to US Dollars at the time of writing):
I will be using it mainly for school work revolving around engineering, so I don't need crazy specs for a laptop. I do intend to try out photo and video editing in the near future, but not a high priority in decision making (not a professional, I don't demand too much on this area). But I do not want [it] to be plugged into the wall all the time as I move around a lot doing work, so battery life is a must for me. Which is why I am leaning to the first option, but the other options make the first option look weak. Which option do you think is the most viable for my use case, or should I head over to Dell Singapore's website and make my purchase from there? For reference, here's Dell Singapore's Dell XPS 13 product page and the different SKUs available: Dell XPS 13 (9380) [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:58 AM PDT Hi everyone. Recently I have discovered that my old laptop, from 2015 (so it has some working years behind it), got the famous Trojan virus. But not only that, it's RAM memory (4 GB), hard drive and other hardware equipment is more, less.. Out of date.. The repair cost would be around 500 Euros, or round about 560 dollars.. So, I came to the conclusion to buy a new one. I'm recently a student, and a good and fast laptop is a necessity nowadays. What would you suggest me? I'm looking for something which isn't that costly, but has some good specs. [link] [comments]
Cannot pick between these laptops. Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:24 AM PDT I am in need of a new laptop as my current daily driver is wearing out. (Current Laptop --> HP Pavillion 15 Beats Special Edition) I am a teacher and need this laptop for working at home and for entertainment. I play casual games like World of Warcraft and Minecraft I know, 2012 much. I, also, am almost constantly watching Netflix or a podcast in the background. I know a bit about computers and I know what I definitely need/want in a laptop but I am struggling to make a final decision. I have had this tab pinned for weeks now. My Needs
My Wants
My No Goes
I narrowed my selection down to these 3 laptops all of them have my wants and needs covered. I need help making my final decision since these all seem like great options. I am open to other suggestions as well. My 3 Finalist
Any help will be appreciated! [link] [comments]

Dell laptop with two external monitors? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:16 AM PDT Hi, I've looked on Amazon, etc for a splitter that will allow me to display on two external monitors. My laptop is a 2019 Dell latitude 7490 w/ i7. The two monitors are identical Dell w/ only VGA or DVI output. I would like to not just display a duplicated screen on the second external monitor, I would like to have both monitors have different desktops/screens. For example, I could have chrome open on one display and MS Word open on the other. Is this possible? I've seen these splitters, but I want to be sure that they won't just duplicate the display. What do I need to do this? [link] [comments]
Need some advice on what Laptop to buy Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:17 AM PDT Hey everyone, * **Total budget and country of purchase:** 1100-1600, Germany/Austria * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life, normal clamshell * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Must be light enough to carry around every day * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-15 * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** CATIA * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Oldschool Runescape, SC2, Apex * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good trackpad, keyboard, fingerprint or windows hello * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** So currently the laptop i am using is the Samsung book 12, and it just isn't cutting it battery life and performance wise. I originally bought this for university to take notes on with the pen, but due to the lack of decent writing programs on windows, i decided to buy an iPad pro which I'm super happy with. I need good battery life, honestly I'm tending towards 1080p on a laptop now, just because battery life means a lot to me, and 4k isn't that noticeable on good 1080p panels? (100% sRGB). I mainly play Oldschool Runescape, Starcraft 2, and Apex. Uni work would be anything CAD oriented mainly CATIA. Anything more demanding, i have my desktop for (6700k upgrading soon to ryzen 7nm, rx 480 upgrading to Na'Vi). So here's what I'm looking at rn:
Any suggestions or advice? [link] [comments] |
