would my dad be able to see my search and video history from the WiFi router?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:03 PM PDT

I saw a similar question awhile ago, but my dad is a database administrator for his job, and I've searched less than appropriate things on my phone (incognito) and using a VPN and my life would be pretty hellish. And if so, how can I delete the history thanks

Gigabit Ethernet dropped back to 100mpbs, suspecting damaged cables. How do I test the cables?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:03 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I noticed when doing some file transfers at home the file transfers to my NAS was stuck basically at 11 MB/s. It drove me nuts because I know before I left for vacation the speeds were much faster than that. I read somewhere that Cat 6 cables if damaged can drop down to sub gigabit speeds.

I want to test the cables, but not sure how to do its done. The RJ45 testing tools seem to require the cable on both ends to be connected to it, the cables I have in my house span from the basement up to the upper levels in the house.

Before I buy the wrong things...

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:35 PM PDT

I just bought a new house and trying to take advantage of the prewired Ethernet in my home. I have googled and googled... can't seem to figure out what the proper set up is.

THIS IS THE PART I GET - The room where my internet comes into the house... I set up the modem and connect to a router.
    - From the router I split it up to each room in the house.

THIS IS WHERE I START TO GET CONFUSED - In the living room I want to split this into a smart tv, PlayStation, Apple TV... (etc) - In the home office I want to split this to my computer and Ethernet printer. - The remaining rooms I do not intend to split up, as they will only have a computer set up.

MY QUESTION IS - Do I use a router in the rooms, where I have multiple things connected? Or, will a switch work just fine? And if it is a switch does it have to be a "smart" switch?

MY CONCERNS ARE - My kids, from their bedroom may want to print a homework assignment in my office once in a while.
    - If I put my printer on a switch in the home office, I fear that my kids computer won't be able to communicate with the switch, because it isn't located on that switch.

Do I have the correct understanding?

    MOCA vs Mesh w/Ethernet switch

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:09 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I could use some advice on getting a wired connection to my 2nd floor office. I am currently on a 300mbps Comcast plan ( and will upgrade when higher speeds are available). Streaming devices are wired and there are a mix of wireless device (3-4 laptops, 15ish Iot devices).

The internet comes from the street into my living room. The wall-plate there has two coax jacks (a splitter?). From there it is connected to my:

    • modem: Arris SB6141 which is connected to
    • router: Synology RT2600AC
    • switch: 4 port netgear un-managed switch for the Entertainment center

My main challenge is trying to get ethernet to my office on the 2nd floor for 3 desktops. It's a bit too far to run ethernet. The RT2600AC is amazing and provides coverage throughout the entire house including the basement and the parking 25 yards away. I am wary of powerline because of the potential interference from electrical appliances. My thoughts were to try:

    • MOCA from the living room to my office. The house is wired for Coax in all rooms. My major concerns would be interference with the comcast cable box and with my network being extended back out into the street coax. I am also confused about installation especially if the living room coax has two jacks (one currently used for my modem).
    • A Mesh router with an Ethernet jack. I was looking into the Synology MR2200AC which will work with my existing router. I don't need a mesh node since coverage is fine (although I might if I ever move to a bigger house) but I was thinking I could have that mesh node in the office connected to an Ethernet switch. Has anyone tried this set-up?

Thank you for any advice you may have! If you have any recommendations for products, please let me know!

Need help finding a solution to pick up wifi 118 feet away

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:56 PM PDT

My neighbors are graciously letting me use their internet but, the problem is I have to be outside to usually pick it up. I'd like to find a way to be able pick up the signal and broadcast it through my house.

We'd rather not run an ethernet cable all that way and would rather do a wireless solution. I've looked at cantenna's but, I'm not sure if they're good for this distance or even worth while now a days. I'm open to any suggestions anyone has. Also, the cheaper the better but, am not against spending a bit extra.

    Poe powered Fire TV stick?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:51 PM PDT

I've run out of power outlets behind my tv, and am thinking about using a poe splitter to power and connect Ethernet to the Fire Tv 4K. I'm sick of the stick having to reboot every time I turn the tv on, since it's currently pulling power from a USB port on the tv. Anyone else done this with one of these? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M1E3VC8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pUvPCbSNWJJW9

Need to extend my network about 10 feet

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:47 PM PDT

I live in an apartment that is only about 700 square feet but for some reason the wifi will not reach the room on the "far" side of the apartment. I am assuming it's something in the walls, because the distance is only maybe 50-60 feet. I thought it might be my modem and router so I bought a new modem and router, but still no luck.

I have read that extenders don't really work, so I am looking for a reasonably priced solution that a non-technical person could set up.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

What's the best router for me?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:38 PM PDT

    Hello,

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 other people, with about 1200 sq. ft. of space. We currently have a subscription to Verizon Fios Gigabit, and our trusty Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 from eBay just crapped out. I've been using Linux exclusively for the past 3 years, and I've worked odd jobs doing maintenance and setup in the past, as well as going through the whole cycle of Ubuntu to Arch to Slackware to Linux From Scratch back to Ubuntu again, so I have a relatively firm handle on how to use Linux. Because I had little time to get the network running again, I Amazon Primed the GL iNet B1300 overnight and set it up. I like it, but there are so many bugs with the higher level wrapper software that I'm afraid to reboot it. I picked the B1300 because I used the GL iNet Mango in the past, and it's absolutely fantastic as a travel router. Now that I've had time to think about what networking solutions I want going forward, I'm looking for suggestions as to what I should do. I still have a few weeks to return the B1300 to Amazon with no fee, but I'm wondering if there is a fan favorite router out there with ideally easy setup that also allows for the great feature set of OpenWRT or DD-WRT or any of that (Advanced)Tomato stuff I see around. My price range isnt more that $200, and reliability is a huge consideration, seeing as our 145 frickin dollar R8000 lasted all of one year! Any ideas or brands are appreciated, and I'm mostly here to see what people are using these days.

Edit: As for usage, we stream a bunch of TV from netflix, one roomate plays LoL a bunch, and we generally stay connected over whatsapp and the like.

    Internet Speed Help

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:34 PM PDT

I've been trying to fix this for a few days now but I'm not sure what to do.

Certain downloads seem to be capped at 340kbps - downloading a torrent through Qbit or through Steam seem to cap out at this. However, I can stream HD video fine, and downloads through Battle.net application download games at full speed.

Speed test shows my full download speed available on multiple devices. I have tested on my phone using Wi-Fi and my PC which is connected by ethernet cable.

I have tried resetting the router and resetting all the firewall settings but this doesn't seem to fix it.

I'm at a loss. About a week ago I had none of these issues, and I haven't changed anything since. The only thing notable that happened was that my place lost power last week for an extended period of time.

    Any ideas?

Will WiFi routers work connected to a load balancing router?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:36 AM PDT

I plan on hooking up the Draytek with two internet connections to a mesh wifi system.

Are there settings that I need to be mindful of so that both routers are not competing with each other?

Wouldn't want the routers to nerf wifi speed because they're competing with each other by trying to do the same things twice like firewalling, QOS, WMM etc. (If this concern is even valid)

Complete Noob - Looking for help with bandwith? issues

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:41 PM PDT

So I really have no knowledge about home networking, but I've recently run into an issue that I've never crossed before. For specs I have Xfinity 400mb down/21 mb up over an Asus AC1900.

My new issue, is I can't seem to maintain a steady connection while watching video from Twitch or Youtube, and playing an online game, such as the Division 2. I don't have this problem with lighter games such as World of Warcraft, or Battlefront II,

I've turned off the QoS in my router, and it looks like everything else that might mess with it is off. The only thing I haven't dug into is my Antivirus (bitdefender '19)

Any suggestions? Or is the network usage for both activities too high, that I can't do them simultaneously?

    Thanks!

How do I setup multiple different networks with different static ip's?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:30 PM PDT

So my ISP sells static ip's for $15 a month, and that if I wanted to setup each static ip with its own little network, that I would need a multi wan router OR a managed switch. I've decided on getting a multi wan router since they told me switches are tricky to work with. Where do I go from here?

    Mesh Wifi Router for Home

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:36 AM PDT

Anyone has any guidance / suggestions on which mesh router based on their experience?

I am looking for a 2-story home 3000+ sq ft. Both security & performance are equal priority.

    1. Netgear Oobi Tri-Band BK50 is generally acknowledged as the best in multiple reviews. However its not a true Mesh. I am not sure what kind of security/protection does it offer with regards to malware, ransomware etc. it also doesnt provide any QOS and doesnt have any USB.
    2. TD-Link Deco M9 probably offers the best blend of performance and security features. Most of the reviews however put it more in the middle of their rankings.
    3. My research says Gryphon is the most secure and true mesh router. However I am not sure about its performance compared to others as many reviews dont even acknowledge it.

How to secure a network from access from (literally) outside

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:55 PM PDT

So I am thinking of adding another AP to my network to have wireless coverage on my porch and in my garden. However, I'd then have an ethernet cable running outside and theoretically one could unplug the AP and have total access to my LAN via the ethernet cable.

How would one secure a network against such a (allowedly) theoretical threat?

Using a ZyXel C3000z as a Modem only (no routing)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I've got a CenturyLink modem/router (ZyXel C3000z) which I'd like to use only as a bridge to an ASUS router that I love. Unfortunately, my home layout and network is such that I can't simply program the PPPoE and creds into the ASUS router as it's far away from where the WAN comes in. So I need _something_ where the C3000z is located and I'm fine with it being the C3000z.

Does anyone know how to turn off the routing functionality of the C3000z? Is it as simple as disabling the DHCP server or will it still try to do some routing?

    Thanks!

Question: Internet Speeds vs Bandwidth. What am I actually paying for?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:50 PM PDT

If I'm paying for a 1000mbps plan from AT&T, what am I actually paying for? Speed or bandwidth?

    And to further clarify:

    1. Is my plan offering (theoretically) 1000mbps speed to each device connected to my home network? (So, for example, an image can be downloaded at 1000mbps?)
    2. Or is my plan offering 1000mbps divided by however many devices are connected to my home network?
      1. Ex: 4 devices connected so each device can only download an image at 250 mbps max?
    3. Or is my plan offering bandwidth or something else entirely?
    4. Is there a way to determine how much bandwidth your ISP offers you? Or do they just keep this information secret?
    5. If I'm getting this all wrong, I'm all ears for a correct explanation of what's going on.

Edit: Thanks for all the responses!

Edit 2 (3:32pm CST) I just realized that my #1 question wasn't worded the way I had intended after reading some of the responses. Although I've definitely gotten a better understanding now, I still posted an updated #1 below if anyone wants to correct it:

    (1. Revised) If there were 10 devices connected to my network, is my plan offering (theoretically) 1000mbps speed to each device connected to my home network at the same time? (So, for example, all 10 devices can each down an image at 1000mbps at the same time?)

Help setting a local network over wifi between two iMacs

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:44 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm confused. I'm trying to set up a simple network for file sharing between two iMacs (standing next to each other).

    - In System Preferences / Sharing, File Sharing is checked on both computer.

    - In File Sharing / Options, we've tried with SMB checked, or both SMB and AFP.

    - Each user has been attributed to the default public folder on each computer.

But it doesn't work! The access is always denied. The login window shakes as if the password was refused.

    Please help! Thanks :-)

Need help making decision about home network with AP's from different companies

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:35 PM PDT

    Hey Everyone,

I just had a few questions about my home network setup.

Here's a bit of background information:

I am currently living in a house with other roommates where a former housemate rigged up the current internet network. He decided to use Open Mesh AP's ("Open Mesh" is a company like Ubiquiti that was acquired by another company recently) and powered them using the provided POE injectors.

One of my current roommates has been complaining about the poor internet signal in his room. Since it would be expensive to buy another A62 AP from Open Mesh (roughly $250), I am wondering if it would be smarter to change the entire home network over to Ubiquiti AP's (AC-Pro) instead since the features between the two APs don't seem too different and it would be a lot more cost efficient if anyone decides to add more AP's in the future.

    Link to A62 AP --> https://www.amazon.com/Open-Mesh-A62-Universal-Tri-Band-Cloud-Managed/dp/B07CLHK676/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=open+mesh+a62&qid=1554319252&s=gateway&sr=8-2

^^^I feel like the "tri-band" feature listed in the product description is just 3x3, which the AC-Pro has

    Current Home Setup:

    AT&T Modem/Router --> Unmanaged Switch --> 4 Open Mesh AP's

    Here are my questions:

    1. Is it possible to use an AP from Ubiquiti and configure it so that it uses the same SSID as the other AP's and still supports roaming?
    2. Am I better off replacing each of the four Open Mesh AP's with Ubiquiti AP's since a Ubiquiti AC-PRO is only $136 on Amazon compared to the ~$250 for an Open Mesh A62.
    3. Can Ubiquiti devices and AP's be managed remotely through a web portal?
    4. Can anyone explain what "wave 2" technology is?
    5. What is 2x2 technology? 3x3?

Replacing my consumer WiFi router and possibly my existing unmanaged switch and not sure if I know what I need

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:53 AM PDT

Background: I'm a software engineer with some sysadmin experience, although my physical networking experience is mostly limited to consumer-grade home networks.

Bought my first house last year, and seeing as it had a crawlspace, I decided I could pretty easily run ethernet to the living room and my home office. One of the previous owners had just drilled into the floor and ran an off-the-shelf ethernet cable between a couple of rooms and that just would not do.

Last month I ran Cat 6 from the living room and my office into one of the closets in the master bedroom. I got a cheap wall-mount rack,a 24-port patch panel, a 24-port gigabit unmanaged switch, a rack-mount surge protector, and a little shelf for some smart home hubs I wanted to move out of the living room. All done.

Then a few weeks later I bought a NAS, because of course. After I got it, I realized it had two gigabit ports on the back so I could bond the connections together... but my switch doesn't support that because it's unmanaged.

I also had some problems where my router would die and need to be reset, and every time I reset it, I would have to go back and turn the switch off and back on so that it would configure itself properly. Annoying.

Then I found out how cheap PoE wireless APs are (at least compared to how expensive I figured something like Ubiquiti would be). So now I want PoE connectivity too, but really just to power one AP (it's a small house and I live in a rural ass town in a really safe neighborhood so there's no need for considering security cameras).

I'm not sure I'll be able to affordably allow my NAS to theoretically hit its max (obviously HDD speed is a factor and RAID config probs), because I think that means needing a 24-port managed 10Gbit switch which all seem like they're above $500 easily.

I guess my question is... what should I replace my existing WiFi consumer router + 24-port unmanaged switch with? A small, wired router with a PoE port (like an EdgeMax I think?), keep the existing switch and forget about bonding my NAS connection? Should I get a router with 16+ ports, PoE and skip the switch until I need it? If so... which one? Is it worth trying to find something that supports 10Gbit, even if only for a handful of connections? Should that be part of the router or is it more economical to just get a small 10Gbit switch and plug everything that needs the speed into that?

I feel like I'm over complicating things maybe and my networking knowledge is possibly a bit outdated and incomplete. Thanks for any help!

P.S. I'm asking specifically for a wired router, under the assumption that I'm going to get a PoE WiFi AP

P.P.S.: When looking at the EdgeMax line of products, there's a 'Console' port, which I assume is for a datacenter console, which I don't have. Is that necessary? Will I be able to configure most of these business-focused routers over the web like regular home routers or...? I really don't know how that stuff works
