At my wit's end with internet lag, driving me crazy and draining my wallet

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:24 PM PDT

I'm on Windows 10 Professional, on a modest custom built gaming desktop that I've been using for a long time now, but the problem is not limited to my computer. It's also on my Xbox and my Roku devices.

I am connected to the internet, but I am experiencing lag and sudden but brief disconnects on all devices. My ISP has been out to my location and says everything is fine on my end, everything is coming through just fine and I am plugged directly into the node. I just went out tonight and bought a brand spanking new modem/router, the best one I could get my hands on (Netgear AC1750/C6300), and my ping in-game has improved by a small percentage but I am still experiencing lag and some disconnects! I even bought all new cables for it; both the coaxial cable and the ethernet are the best that money can buy. It's precisely what all the publications recommend.

This is a new problem. My internet has been fine for years, 100Mbs coming down the pipeline just fine, right up until a couple weeks ago. I really didn't want to spend the money I did on this fancy modem, but I did with the reassurance that I was putting the ultimate fix towards any internet problems I might be having. Again, it's not a speed problem, it's my latency. My latency in online games skyrockets through the roof at random but brief intervals, and I am totally disconnecting from online games at random times.

My last post got no visibility, and I am frustrated to tears about this honestly. It's threatening the loose bond I maintain with my online friends because I can't stay connected in games. Any and all advice is appreciated, I've done everything I know how to do so far but I am a novice at these things anyway.

I'm competing with 38 wireless routers visible from my apartment. How to get wifi into the bedroom?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:08 PM PDT

EDIT: So looks like running ethernet is my best option, which is what I didn't want to do - but thanks to y'all, I know it's my best option. I used to run my second router in access point mode, so I already know how to do that, thankfully, and someone mentioned flat cable exists, so that's valuable to know as well, so this thread is:

    SOLVED

    Thank you all!

    My original post:

I'm in a small two bedroom apartment. My wireless router is plugged into the cable modem at the only cable outlet that will supply internet.

Approximately 30 feet away and through two walls (my living room is at the front of my apartment. There's a central hall going straight back to the back. On one side there are three rooms: living room, bedroom, master bedroom. So the signal goes through both walls of the bedroom int he middle, if that makes sense) is the master bedroom. Wifi is patchy at best in the bedroom, and about half the time I can't get anything to load.

In the house we owned previously, wifi was slow through about 5 walls and 40ish feet from the router, but was consistently perfectly fine for streaming etc.

What's the best solution to get internet working in the bedroom?

I do own a second router, which is what I ended up using to get great wifi in the bedroom in the house. I was able to run a LAN cable from the first router to the second.

In the apartment, I'd have to lay the cable on the floor by the wall, and that's icky here. So I'd rather not do that.

Would something like this be a good option? Maybe I'd need to get one to put in the bedroom between the living room where the router is and the master bedroom, then a second one in the master bedroom?

I honestly don't quite know how these things work.

I'm afraid if I'm not getting good wifi signal into the bedroom, a single one of these extenders wouldn't either.

But anyway - what's a good way to get wifi into the bedroom? I know there's already too many routers, but with my vague understanding of how it all works, as long as the signal is strong enough, having some device providing wifi directly in the bedroom should be enough for my devices to get decent connections…

Where are we buying gear from?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:45 AM PDT

Closing on my new home soon and then time is nearing to order all the goods I'll need (primarily Ubiquiti) and I was wondering where's everyone's go-to for orders? I've search the common names, Amazon, Ubiquity direct, Newegg, Monoprice, and CDW. If I insist on buying all from one source, Amazon has the best price / selection but since I'm not opposed to mixing and matching, are there any other vendors who's news letters I should start subscribing to?

    Upgrading From N300R

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:13 PM PDT

Our families modem and router are both located in the basement and the signal strength is awful for me since I'm on the top floor, especially when someone is streaming Netflix or music. My family has also been using Range Extenders which have made our already slow internet worse, at least in my case. I'm wondering if I'd see any improvements upgrading to something like the Netgear Nighthawk AC2300 or ASUS AC1900. Running an Ethernet cable is sadly not an option. I've even considered Power Line Adapters because the signal strength is so poor. I'd like to hear any and all suggestions.

Internet issues on PC, but not other devices

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:42 AM PDT

I've been having issues with my PC having trouble loading websites even while all my other devices (iPads) are just fine. I have to keep reloading the sites over and over, and sometimes they'll load, and then they won't again.

It happens regardless of whether I'm using ethernet or wifi on the PC. It is windows 10. Network adapter drivers are up to date. Windows is up to date. It's been happening for awhile now, but I'm not sure what is causing it. Windows defender doesn't show any viruses.

Any ideas? Any info that would help figure out the problem?

Two network connections, one wired, one wireless, Bridged.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:56 PM PDT

On my windows 7 PC I have two network connections, one wired directly into a X32 mixer and the WiFi connected to home network with internet access.

I setup both under a bridged network to allow me to see the hardwired connection via WiFi. Is this the correct way to go about this or is there another and better approach?

    2.4ghz or 5ghz to Ethernet?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:23 PM PDT

Hello, I have my PC connected via ethernet and I decided to check my speeds with speed test. And I only got like 20mb/s and I pay for 500. So I instantly thought my ethernet somehow switched to 2.4ghz instead of 5ghz. Also, I have my phone connected to the 5ghz and I tested that also and I got around 500mb/s. So what am I doing wrong here? Someone please help.

    EdgeRouter X - QoS(Game lag) Issue..?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:16 PM PDT

I have my PC connected to eth0, and the internet/modem to eth1. When I enable QoS(applied to WAN=eth0), it appears that "download" and "upload" are opposite(???). When I or another PC on eth2/3/4 download at full speed, my ping in games only rises by ~10, but there is still very choppy/unplayable lag.

It seems I should set WAN=eth1 instead of eth0. I wonder if I set up the router incorrectly at this point... Will this now solve my QoS/game lag, and make "upload" and "download" not opposite? Or is that a firmware bug?

Also, with initial settings(and all I've tried so far), I often see my ping in games rapidly jumping from 48 to 60 to 48, etc.

Can a Synology RT2600ac handle Cox Gigablast?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:11 PM PDT

I'm using a Synology RT2600ac for my home router and want to make sure I'm using the best equipment for the speed of internet that I'm paying for.

My speed test tops out at ~ 690Mbps down, I'm happy with this but as always would like to be closer to what I'm paying for 1Gig.

I'm thinking of going to Ubiquiti UniFi USG, just want to make sure I'm thinking in the right direction.

Thanks for any help y'all can give me on this.

Strange network wide issue with PC upgrade.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:50 PM PDT

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with a friends computer right now, he upgraded his PC with new Mobo/CPU/RAM and kept the OS and Hard drives the same. Once the upgrade was complete and installed all updated drivers whenever the computer turns on ALL devices on the network stop working. Phone/Internet/Wifi are dead besides the 1 computer - Turning off the computer allows access network wide again.

Reinstalled OS / Factory reset Modem / Upgraded Modem from ISP from their troubleshooting (Tech came to replace + their own troubleshooting went no where)

Windows 10 / MSI Z370 Carbon Mobo - Intel Ethernet Driver

Task Manager shows no network apps hogging anything - I'm currently digging into the DHCP and MAC addresses to see if there may be something conflicting? I am at a lost for words right now if someone can point me in the right direction that would be helpful.

    Cheers!

tp link router help (bandwidth control)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:55 AM PDT

I bought this router.. https://www.tp-link.com/ae/products/details/TD-W8961ND.html main goal was to control bandwidth over connected devices so I wouldn't go over my data limit cap provided by my isp.. sadly there doesn't seem to be a bandwidth control feature :( https://imgur.com/a/vPPDky1 and it's router settings doesn't seem to be matching the ones I've been seeing online looking for help. Am I missing something here?

Can I do anything useful with 6 gigabit ports?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:07 AM PDT

So, cleaning out my server this past weekend, HP ProLiant DL380 G5, and I noticed what I thought was a bunch of ISDN ports is actually 4 gigabit ports. On top of that, the 2 ethernet ports that are on my server mobo are also gigabit. Please don't laugh, no clue why I did not check the network config earlier.

So my questions is, with 6 gigabit ports, can I use them all for anything other than redundancy? I kinda feel they need to be used for something. :P

    Setting up network for internet

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:15 PM PDT

Had no other idea how to title this. Hey guys I have a few questions mainly concerning the internet, routers, modems, and the likes, etc. I live with my mom and she has all this stuff set up if it matters. Everything is downstairs. I am on my pc and playstaton a lot, I play games. Right now I am using an Ethernet connecting to the modem/router?? Whatever. See I can't even tell the difference. I might have a gateway, but yeah I have that connected which gives me the true speed or close to it anyway. However without it and just using WIFI it is very slow. Now I know this, as ethernet is so much better but having a long cable dangle around the house is weird. (Surprised no one tripped on it)

So here goes my questions. What if there are two type of 'networks' in the house. Is like the bandwidth divided, halved? Will be less. Does that mean the internet bill will potentially get higher? I don't know about all this stuff. Should I call my ISP about these things and if so, exactly what? Or will I get the speeds that I should be regardless of two of them, is it even possible? How would one go about setting this up. And an even stupid question. Say that I just want to use this 'network' just for me, can I or will it be shared throughout the house? Even if I buy one of these, can I still connect to the SSID? Man I got so many questions for this type of stuff.

i want to set up one that is closer to me and where I can just use ethernet instead of WIFI because WIFI fucking sucks. You don't have to answer all these questions either, but just a general outline of what can I do I guess and what this does for your internet. Like really curious if this will sow down my speeds or whatever. Anyway thanks

    Optimal solution for media center?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:39 PM PDT

I would like some advice from you gurus, please.

I have a UniFi 24 port PoE switch, 2 nano AP's, a USG and Cloud Key gen 2.

I have three or 4 areas of my home that I'd like to be able to watch media that I've downloaded on a TV. All of these areas have hard wired connections.

I originally thought I could just buy a Snyology NAS and simply hookup a WDTV/Nvidia Shield and I would magically be able to access the media/torrents that I've downloaded to the NAS. I am now seeing that might not be realistic.

I currently own 1 Nvidia Shield. I have several WDTV's (no longer made, they are awesome because they simply play almost any file tye). Through the Shield subreddit I've heard a lot about PLEX and Kodi. I am not very familiar with these yet but after researching a bit I now realize that encoding/decoding seems to be very resource dependent. I do not necessarily want to be tied to a certain device for each TV.

Given my constraints and options, what would you advise?

Is there some sort of media server that accomplished this in conjunction with a NAS or simply any HD on my network?

Should I just use a Raspberry Pi for this? Is it powerful enough?

    Thanks for any help!

How do I create home lab/network environment behind Altice One all-in-one?

How can you create a lab environment starting from behind an Altice One all-in-one modem, router, tuner combo box if the box only spits out DHCP and the Altice One does not offer any kind of bridging mode? Can you put a gateway behind an Altice One box and somehow get WAN IP to the gateway? Thanks

    pfSense VLAN issue

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:04 PM PDT

Trying here before I take this over to /r/networking. So I have a weird issue going on. I have a high availability pfSense setup. There's a Cisco SG300 switch on the LAN side that's been left unconfigured, but I've logged into verify that all switchports are set to trunking and allow all VLANs. I have a VLAN 400 port configured on the LAN port of pfSense, configured a CARP IP of 10.19.4.1 however the CARP IP shows as master on both firewalls.

    Here's a simplified topology.

On a Cisco 2960S, the ports are configured as trunk ports allowing VLANs 1 and 18 (phones are tagged as 18, but they're not Cisco compatible so the only way I was able to get the phones to work was to trunk them and then the phones are set to manually tag VLAN 18). The phones are routed via a static route to another router via pfSense and they work without issue.

For testing purposes, I configured a port on the Cisco 2960 as an access port to VLAN 400 (it's been added to all switches and the trunks allow all VLANs other than the access ports). For testing, I had a laptop with a static IP set as 10.19.4.100. I also set the default gateway to the primary firewall's IP 10.19.4.2 and did a packet capture. I see ARP packets one way and IPv6 advertisement packets but that's it. The laptop cannot be pinged from the switch or firewall and it cannot ping the firewall. The switches can ping 10.19.4.2. If I set a VLAN 400 interface, it also cannot ping.

pfSense has an any/any firewall rule on the VLAN 400 firewall entry. The routing tables also have entries for the 10.19.4.0/24 network.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've posted this on the Netgate forums but someone thought the traffic wasn't being tagged. But if that was the case, I wouldn't have seen ARP packets on the correct interface when doing a packet capture.

I've done VLAN routing a million times on all Cisco networks, but not with pfSense. Anyone seen this before?

    Router Issue at Work

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:43 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

My issue is a router at work. My department is the warehouse and the router there is a Netgear N600. You can connect to the router no problem, but around the afternoon you get kicked off from it. And when you try to reconnect it gives an error and says wrong password even though the password is exactly the same. So what I end up doing is having to turn it off and turn it back on, and that seems to fix the issue because we are able to connect the mobile devices to it. The only problem is it seems to be happening every single day which is annoying and not a long term solution of having to turn it off and on. So any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thank You

    Asus 88U and 3100 problems.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:38 PM PDT

Hi first my network looks like this. 1. Modem / Router Combo provided by ISP. 2. Asus AC88U (connected via lan port to 1) 3. Asus AC3100 (connected via lan port to 1)

When I go into the firmware and set it to WAN dhcp disabled it will say the Network Cable is Unplugged.

I have them properly set in LAN as 192.168.1.2 and 1.3

Any idea why this would be happening? I mean yes, nothing is plugged into the WAN port because it should be plugged into a normal ethernet port.

IT Geniuses: Will Netflix play nice with a load-balancing router?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:41 AM PDT

I am moving from the USA to a part of Italy where the Internet is not great.

I'd like to order two internet connections to my home and hook them up to a load balancing router.

Does a Netflix stream pull a single link or does it use multiple ports that can be balanced evenly with a router?

Are there issues I should be aware of when it comes to surfing the web with a load balancing router?

I still need router help! PLEASE!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I do not know what I should go with. I don't want to overspend but I really need to get my wifi running properly again.

I previously posted about my R7000 Nighthawk going to shit. I really want to get a good reliable wifi system.

I currently use Wifi for everything except my gaming PC. I stream 4K video to my 4K smart TV, use my PS4, Switch, Laptops, cell phones, etc. Multiple people using my wireless everyday.

I need something fast and reliable for all the tasks that I do. Again, my gaming PC is plugged in direct to the router, so I assume that should be as fast as possible regardless.

I currently live in a small Villa, but eventually (1-2 years) will buy a large house. I cannot run more cables in my current situation but I will in the future.

I am currently considering either Orbi, Eero, R7000P Nighthawk, or going with an edge router and an AC-Lite or NanoHD.

Can anyone please help me determiine what is best to go with and if its the Ubiquiti stuff, how to properly set it all up so everything works properly?

If you need further info, please ask.

So i today have had some issues with my HUAWEI B525S-23A LTE router. Usually i have been able under "Network settings" to select which band the router should use. But today that feature is gone, and i have had internet issues. Anyone else that have had the same problem? It was fine yesterday, but today that feature is gone which is fairly strange.

    Thanks
