Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 USD. Good battery life, best specs for the money, and lightish gaming. I don't care about the weight. Which OS do you require? Windows 10 Do you have a preferred screen size? Minimum of 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Schoolwork, light gaming, IT related programs. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? Don't care about games tbh. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices? Good build quality and just really good battery life.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games I play include BFV, Squad, R6 Siege, insurgency, division 2, Apex Legends I'd like to play at close to/highest settings at over 60fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not necessarily. Just need two usb for mouse and headset.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking around and I have pretty much convinced myself I want something with an RTX card. Something with decent thermals so I don't need max Q. I also won't be binge gaming. A max of 2 hours at a time. Thank you in advance!

Laptop Suggestions - Fast, affordable, reliable, strong battery, etc....

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:57 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around $1k more or less - USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Not sure how I feel about a 2 in 1. I'm concerned about a short eventually occurring in the monitor. Great battery life is crucial.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight and thinness are important to me, but I'm willing to give in to a laptop that may be a bit heavier if it provides a better overall performance at a good price.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Currently have a 15.6 inch monitor, so I do not want to get anything smaller than that. A larger screen would be nice, but not entirely necessary.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Primarily run the standard Office Suite programs. Occasionally I'll run games. Would be nice to be able to have a system that can actually support gaming.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Unsure which FPS would be best, but would love something that will not experience stuttering. My current laptop is fairly basic and cannot handle gaming well.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Not a huge fan of touch-screen for a laptop, but not against having that as an option either. A good keyboard is crucial as I do a TON of typing. 10-key is necessary as well.

My primary concern with purchasing a new laptop is that it is integrative with my Office programs and also functions well with programs such as Chrome or Firefox.

I'm also a huge Sticky Notes user, if that makes any difference.

Good quality web cam is crucial.

I would also prefer a laptop with speakers that are actually loud. My current laptop speakers are so quiet.

The final thing that I would find absolutely necessary is that there are several USB ports, at least one HDMI port, and of course the standard VGA cable port.

Acer Swift 3 OR Asus Vivobook S14 OR...?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:10 PM PDT

    Good morning guys!

I need some help with deciding which laptop to choose. My budget is about 800-900€.

    Those are my main expectations:

    • I can do some light gaming (Dota2,... no AAA games and such)
    • it has to be light and portable as I'll travel a lot
    • The keyboard ought to be decent because I also want to use it for university after having travelled.

Things that do not bother me:

    • not having a touch screen
    • not having many ports for cables and such
    • not having included HDD next to a SSD

Alright, so my first favourite one was the Lenovo Y530. Terrific design, but I guess it kinda lacks portability and the battery life. Then I stumbled upon the Swift 3 and, except for the design bothering me a little, I really like it. However, the Vivobook S14 seems quite decent too, especially the design, which is why I can't decide between those two. What would you advise? Or, are there even better laptops for me?

    Thanks in advance!

    Laptop Suggestion!

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:51 PM PDT

    Country/budget: Canada, $1000 +/- $100

Good batter life: prefer 7+ hours, would like best available specs for the money

Weight/thinness: Would prefer something lightweight, less than 4 pounds

    OS: windows

    preferred screen size: 13/15.6 inch

No editing/CAD, light gaming if possible (fortnite low-medium settings 60 fps

At very least 1920 x 1080 resolution but I would really want something better, laptop is being used for university/ lots of entertainment (which is why I want good resolution)

A laptop I've been looking at is the Lenovo ideapad 730s 13" or the Ideapad 330s 15.6" (any thoughts/review on it would be appreciated)

    Thanks in advance

    Travel/Video Editing Laptop

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700-1200 USD, purchasing in the USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would say I prefer the best specs for the money. Good battery life would be nice, but it isn't crucial.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important. I want to be able to take it with me when I travel for work and leisure and it not be a big bulky thing.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. No to Mac, no to Linux, prefer windows, open to Chrome OS. Could be convinced to take up Mac with good reason.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger than 12".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes to CAD but only for generating code to 3d print stuff. Yes to video editing (1080p/60fps, sparingly 4k 30fps), light on gaming (just League of Legends).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Smooth FPS on medium graphics. I'm not too picky.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and hybrid/SSD are key for me. Lots of storage too.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been saving to make a long backpacking trip, and want a good laptop to bring with me when I go. I plan to take footage of my travels and will eventually use this laptop to store footage and edit the video(s?).

    Curious on value.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:27 PM PDT

I hope this doesn't go against any rules, but I was hoping for just a rough idea on a laptop I am potentially looking to buy.

It's an Alienware laptop off craigslist, and the seller seems competent. Everything looks clean from the photos and the description for the specs are as follows.

    "Windows 10

    Intel i5-4300 3.1ghz

    8gb ram

    Nvidia 760m

    1tb hdd

    250gb ssd

Comes with original box charger and gaming mouse"

It's listed for 400, and I know it's not a lot of info, but curious if it seems to be a decent deal or better to pass it up. Thanks for any and all help.

Computer Science and Engineering Laptop, budget ~2k

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 2,000 USD. +/- 100 USD. United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, best specifications for money, 2 in 1 laptop preferred but not required.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are very important. My last computer was too heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Solidworks (CAD), MathWorks MATLAB, programming compilers

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen preferred, but not required. Good keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My college suggests at the minimum to get:

    • Processor(s): 1.8 GHz, 512KB L2 Cache (each processor), with at least SSE2 support,

    • Memory: 4GB Main Memory,
Hard Drive with 80 GB available,

    • DVD-ROM Drive,

    • 128 MB, Direct3D 9 or 10, or OpenGL-capable graphics video (shared memory is okay if 4GB or more main memory),

    • 14 inch display,

    • Ethernet Network Interface (NIC)*,

    • Wireless Networking Adaptor (802.11 b/g)

Currently I am an undecided engineering major in either computer science or electrical/computer engineering. FYI, I'd like this laptop to last me quite a few years and don't want it easily outdated. So I'm not sure if those specifications from my college (like for example the screen size, I don't care what size it is) help or not, especially since it says this is the minimum recommendations.

    Looking for new work laptop

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:52 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget 600-1200 USD * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I'm split here--I think 2 in 1 w/ stylus would be beneficial--but good battery life and performance are more important--I would like at least 6+ hours for battery life * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Would like weight below 3.5 pounds, thinner the better but not overly important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-15, probably leaning towards 13 * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** N/A * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliability and a good keyboard experience is very important. I would want a USB-C, doesn't need to be thunderbolt. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I would be willing to pay extra and size up for decent sound. Main purpose is to take to and from work, with the occasional (3-4) business trips a year. Nothing graphics related needed--anything that would help stay more efficient and organized would be a plus.

    Good 2 in 1 for a budget

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:49 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm trying to help my girlfriend find a good 2 in 1 laptop for college. The price range is about $500 so I'd like to know what is the best we could get for that amount

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Once again the budget is $500

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs and best battery ideally, something that is good to take with you the whole day

How important is weight and thinness to you Big factor for school, just something that wouldn't be crazy to carry all the time

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

It would be for school work, she intends to be running some geographic programs so possibly CAD-ish

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Overall it needs to be a 2 in 1, have touch, and support a pen

Thank you for your help everyone!

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*

Best specifications for the money, Ram and CPU are important

*How important is weight and thinness to you?*

    Love thinness.

*Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*

    Windows

*Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*

    N/A

*Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*

This is for IT work. I will be using virtual machines, server emulators, coding software. Would like to be able to edit too!

*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*

No gaming. Not interested in GPU, LEDs, or ANY gaming aesthetic.

*Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*

I love the aesthetic of small screen bezels. Touch screen is a plus. SSD is a must. A trustworthy product is preferable.

*Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My old gaming laptop is falling apart. I'm no longer into gaming on it - i've built a beefy PC in the meantime, so there is no reason to on a laptop anymore. I need this laptop for school, and I already have one in mind. I will absolutely take ANY suggestions, but tell me what you think about this laptop. It has a beautiful aesthetic - Its like a ripoff macbook with an amazing bezel AND it operates on windows. That's a win win in my book. On top of that, the i7-85 is a little bit better than what I currently, so that's nice. The SSD is also a win. I would prefer it had 32gb Ram, but I can't complain. Thanks!

Laptop purely for portable software development

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:30 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000 Australia (Cheaper is better)
    • **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Battery life is important. I work in cafe's pretty often and don't always have a charger. Small form factor preferred so I can fit on small cafe tables / planes. I am fine with a 1080p screen at 13-15''. I like reduced glare. Prefer no touch screen, but fine if it has one.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, need it to look decent in front of clients and have to carry it around all the time.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux or OSX.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 - 15.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will generally run a couple of node servers, IDE and chrome. My apps have to build so faster cpu = faster build times.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not important to me as I have a desktop.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality. Nice to use all day if required. Easy to carry around and looks professional in front of tech people.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been using an alienware r3 13 as my work provided laptop, I run ubuntu 16.04 on it. It's a bit heavy and bulky but I usually just work with a screen so it's been fine. However, I am moving to freelance work so I need to get myself something. This laptop is a fair beast - i7hq and 16gb ram. I was looking at XPS 13 (9360 - Silver) which I think is an older model and only has 8gb ram and an i5u. I really don't do anything too crazy with my pc so I was wondering if I would be taking a huge performance hit moving to that model from what I'm using at the moment, or if there are better models to look at. I built my own desktop for gaming but I'm a bit lost with laptops.

I'd like decent battery life, to an extent. I'm looking for something ultraportable so I know battery may not be the best.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

I want something as small and light as possible.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

I would prefer windows, would do chrome or linux, and would not like Mac. I don't have any specific requirements since most of the things I'll be doing are web based.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

I'd like something small, 12" max.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

None of the above, just web based office work and some homework.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

No gaming requirements, if anything simple mobile type games.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I would love a good keyboard, build quality, and maybe touchscreen.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

The goal for this laptop is to have something ultra portable that I can carry around with me daily for simple tasks. I currently have a powerful gaming desktop (which is pretty much exclusively used for gaming) and a surface book 2 (which I use for most of my mobile tasks, but is bigger and heavier than I would like for daily use). In the new computer I'd like something small and light with great build quality. The 12" macbook is something that comes to mind as being ideal, but it is expensive, the keyboard is horrible, and I would prefer to not have mac os. I definitely don't want a tablet type 2-in-1 that uses a stand and keyboard case type form factor. I've considered, the 12 macbook, pixelbook, and the new xps 13, but would still like to be smaller. I've considered a GPD pocket as well.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated! If anyone wants additional info let me know!

Decent laptop to do web & print design and occasional video editing? $2000 CAD/$1500 USD budget

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:50 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000 CAD, located in Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best spec for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would love something not too heavy or thick because I'll be moving around a lot, but performance takes priority.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows only (job's requirement)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. All of Adobe CS (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, XD, Bridge, etc.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A (although I might start again if the laptop can take it..)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. All requirements have been mentioned above. I'm currently using a HP Spectre x360-15t Quad Core (8th Gen Intel i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, 512G PCIe NVMe SSD, 4K IPS micro-edge Corning Gorilla, Windows 10) 15.6" from work, and they're letting me upgrade to something more suitable. This laptop can be buggy at times and struggles to run 2 softwares at the same time (for example: InDesign and Photoshop).

    Thanks!
