PSA: Google Play Books now lets you download your previously uploaded e-books.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:42 AM PDT

Same as Google Play Music, Google Play Books allows you to buy but also to upload your own media to the service. From the web Music Library you may download back your files, individually (a limited number of times), or your entire library as a whole. Something similar was not possible to do with your Books Library.

A couple of days ago, I've noticed that the book cover three-dots menus have a new option to download and save the e-book files.

LE: I'm not talking about "downloading" your book to your phone for reading it offline with the Google Books app (aka caching it without having access to the file), I'm talking about downloading them from your Google Books library to your computer, as a local file (e.g. epub).

    Regarding Huawei and Emui.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:28 PM PDT

After the release of the p30 pro, I know some of you are thinking of getting it.

The reviews are all about the camera, but what I and other users want to know is how does the software stack up? what issues and bugs does Emui have? Pros and cons, comparison to Oxygen, One ui, miui, etc.

All in all, I do hope to spark a good discussion.

Huawei P30 Pro, Samsung S10 Plus, Pixel 3XL iPhone XS Max - Very detailed review

[App Impressions] Moment Pro Camera v 2.1.0 (Galaxy S9+ Exynos). Bit of a rant, maybe.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:16 AM PDT

    PREFACE—

I'm a bit of a photography hobbyist who only ever uses a phone because I'm not quite able to justify spending a large amount of cash on a proper CSC or DSLR. Besides, since my phone is almost always with me and can fit in my pocket it's the single most convenient camera I have. I picked the S9+ over the Pixel 3 because, besides the Google kid not being officially available here in the Philippines, I rather liked the feel of the S9 and the shmancy Gear VR headset that you can get with it. I've had this phone for a few months now and while I do envy the S10 the HDR10 recording capability and the ultrawide camera, I've few complaints about this phone overall save for its size— I've got smaller hands for a dude.

Yeah, yeah, get your jokes out now :P

As a photography tool the phone leaves quite a lot to be desired. As has been pointed out many times elsewhere Samsung appears to be so reluctant to raise ISO that it keeps the shutter open for longer than most other phones under similar lighting conditions. This leads to remarkably clean shots in excellent lighting even accounting for the oversharpening and oversaturation you often get on Samsung flagships (which I admit not minding all that much), but once the light goes down you'll be hard-pressed to capture photos of people or pets without losing details to motion blur. I don't take very many photos of static subjects unless I'm just testing the camera out so for the most part I stick to "Pro" mode, crank up the shutter speed and shoot in RAW so I can salvage shadows in Lightroom CC. I wish Samsung allowed people to snap photos in DNG without an accompanying JPEG eating up space in my Gallery; it's an extra step having to delete those.

Things were all good until the Android Pie update came. I like One UI, but take exception to the fact that for some reason Samsung decided to separate Photo and Video modes and even went so far as to kill off Pro move Video. I didn't like that.

So the hunt for a new video app began. Filmic Pro was pricey as hell and other third party apps had UXes that were just unaesthetic, leaving Moment one of the few apps left on my shortlist. I don't own any of their lenses but may pick up the Tele one of these days just for the heck of it. I've had the app for about 48 hours now and have been playing with it nonstop, here are my findings.

Do note that the Exynos S9 uses a Samsung ISOCELL sensor in its camera, whereas Snapdragon variants will have a Sony IMX one. Samples make me think the IMX is better than the ISOCELL, but I've not been able to compare my phone to a Snapdragon unit yet.

ACTUAL STUFF ABOUT THE APP (Got a bit lazy after writing the above so will be brief in this section):

    PROS

    > The UX is beautiful and the video processing at 4k is much nicer-looking than that of Samsung's stock camera, which in itseslf is enough to justify the PHP170 (after tax) asking price to me even considering all that will come below.

    > Square, rule of thirds, and golden ratio grids help with composing shots. Also love that there're accelerometer and gyroscope-based cues in the viewfinder to let you know when you're not shooting perfectly straight or flat down (for food or EDC pics, I guess).

    > 24fps framerates! A bit dated and arbitrary, but I actually do personally enjoy the motion blur you get v. 30fps or 60fps.

    > Ability to manually adjust shutter speed, ISO, focus, and exposure in the middle of recording recording is nice, allows for clean pans or beautifully liquid ones as per one's own taste.

    > No recording limit for 4k video, at least, none that I've noticed (Stock Samsung camera cuts out at 5 mins for 2160p 60fps or 10 mins for 2160p 30fps).

    > If you own any of their lenses, the app comes with correction profiles for each of them. This will be especially useful for their Anamorphic lens— I'm not a fan of anamorphic lens flares myself, but do like the distortion you get around edges.

    CONS

    > RAW photo (DNG) quality is inferior to Samsung stock camera— limited dynamic range and significantly more noise in shots even when using the exact same settings (i.e. ISO, shutter speed, manual focus). Unless I'm going blind one could argue that there's more detail in Moment's DNG files v. Samsung's and that the latter over-smoothens textures, but all that detail lies behind a wall of noise. Also a great deal more purple fringing in extremely dark environments, which I unfortunately kinda like shooting.

    > Significant lag between pressing shutter button and photo actually being taken, even at faster shutter speeds. It's a matter of a second or so but that's more than bad enough for me to poop on it. Pro mode on Stock camera is much better for street photography where milliseconds matter.

    > Shutter speeds only range from 1/10s to 1/8160s, where Samsung stock goes from 10s to 1/24,000s, allowing for a LOT more flexibility in shooting scenarios.

    > Cannot use the telephoto lens or use the main lens' f/2.4 setting, but I like the shallow depth of field you get at f/1.5 anyway so it's not that big a deal. Even then, f/2.4 does eke out more fine detail to make up for the slower shutter speeds, so I can see why people might miss this.

    > The app isn't sensitive enough to rotation— I'll sometimes take a photo or start recording a video in landscape only to later find out that it's locked to portrait mode, or even completely upside-down. Minor inconvenience for photos, bit PITA for videos. In my experience you have to make sure that the UI elements are facing the right direction before you hit record unless you enjoy making work for yourself in post.

    > No 120fps or 240fps, heck, the app maxes out at 30fps. Never mind the 960fps bursts, the phone can record 1080p at 240 fps until you run out of storage. Not a matter of the phone being unable to handle it so much as the app being a bit behind, perhaps.

    > No dedicated shortcut, gesture or otherwise. You can open the app and it'll keep running in the background even after you lock your phone— pressing the power button drops me right off in the app. There's a fair chance that this eats more power than if the app were actually hibernating, though I've yet to really test this out.

    > Nitpick: available settings on the Android version are MUCH more limited than on iOS. Fair, too many things to account for with all the phones they're supporting, but it's still a bit galling that Android users are getting shortchanged. Histogram is much more rudimentary on Android for one (it's not RGB), and there's no option to save in HEVC/HEIF even though Android Pie should already support this natively. No option to set bitrate either, or see waveforms and audio levels. I understand that it's easier to develop stuff for iOS because it's unified and all that jazz, but ouch :(
