I plan on docking my laptop because I have a whole Jarvis desk setup with two external monitors, so the inputs aren't super crucial but it does need good docking functionality. Of course build quality is crucial as well, my last laptop I had for 10 years. It was a Lenovo, but I don't want the Chinese spying on me. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -fill here, remove dashes-
I am pretty set on getting an XPS 15, but I really want the 2019 model in hopes that they have a found a way to fix the cooling situation. I'm also curious what kind of new CPU, GPUs it will incorporate, and don't want to miss out on some game changing upgrade with the new version. My question is, is waiting worth it, or is there a comparable option I can secure sooner. I have some major life changes coming up and need this computer to be able to edit my resume and other stuff. submitted by /u/MrPessimist [link] [comments] |

[Germany] Small, light laptop for uni and media Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:04 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 1600€, Germany Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, best specs How important is weight and thinness to you? Really important. I want something light and thin as this laptop will be carried around a lot and also be brought along for travel Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, maybe dual boot Linux, also considered Mac Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. web browsing/programming/media If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As I will be typing a lot, a good keyboard would be really good. Build quality is extremely important to me. I want something with thin bezels. A touch screen would be cool but not necessary. A good screen is also really important. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The two laptops I've mostly looked at until now were the new 2019 Dell XPS 13 with a 4k screen and the MacBook Air. I've never really been a huge fan of Apple but with MacOS being based off of Unix I wouldn't have to dual boot Linux. Also I really like the look and design of the MacBook Air. The only thing really keeping me from buying it is that 1600€ for a dual core in 2019 seems a bit much. So right now the Dell XPS 13 with an i5-8265U, 8GB of ram, 256GB of storage seems like the best option. submitted by /u/OneStay [link] [comments] |

Gaming Laptop or ultrabook? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:29 AM PDT I'm currently in my second semester of my freshman year of college(studying abroad). I need a new laptop but don't know whether I should get an Ultrabook or a thin and light gaming laptop. My 2 choices that stood out to me were the Huawei Matebook X Pro (2018) and the Acer Predator Triton 500 ( Acer's new thin and light gaming laptop). I still game frequently and don't know what to do. One of my friends told me that a gaming laptop would be a bad buy even though it sounds tempting. My friend told me I should buy an ultrabook and either buy a Nintendo Switch or upgrade my PS4 to a PS4 Pro. I don't know what to do as I'm attracted to the Triton 500. I apologise if this is long but thanks for reading. Total budget and country of purchase: about 1600 dollars give or take. I'm getting it from the US Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. About like 6 hours of battery life and High end specs for the money How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too heavy not too thick Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Gaming, word, excel, Visual Studio If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch, Rocket League, BO4, Battlefield 5, MKX, Pubg. I don't need the absolute best graphics so games running on high 60fps is good enough for me Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, great build quality, trackpad doesn't have to be the best because I'll be using a mouse most of the time anyways. 2 in 1 definitely - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Preferably under 4.5 pounds/ 2.2 kilos - Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Im open to anything but Mac - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Betwen 13 to 15 inches - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I need it to run photoshop and other design programs, and i would like to be able to play some games on it - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Light to moderate gaming, as long as it doesn't crash it's good enough for me - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I need it to have pen support, since I will use it mainly for art and school - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been looking at the hp spectre x360 (the 2019 gem cut version), I would like some input on it. And I really don't like ones like the surface pro where it's really more a tablet than a laptop (I want the keyboard to be non detachable). Also, I will be using it for school so I will be carrying it around all day. (Edit because I messed up the format) submitted by /u/ehrynn [link] [comments] |
[USA] Laptop for light gaming in $600 range Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:32 PM PDT Hi! I currently have an Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-51-55WL)and while I enjoy the specs and the performance when all is well, it's been a bit of a lemon on me. The internal screen support broke due to using thin metal to bear high loads. The camera stopped working. The SSD was not properly seated in the m.2 connector, leading to "Disk not found" errors happening a ton. This was also the second one of this laptop I got - the first had a defective 2.5" SATA bay (wouldn't recognize the drive I installed) so I exchanged it the next day. So yeah, I've had issues with this model. I ordered replacement parts on eBay so everything is back in working order, but I don't want to keep messing around with this thing. I would like to sell it (I think I can get $600 for it) but I don't know what to buy next. I think it's performance (1050Ti) is a bit overkill for my needs. I would say that if anything can run Skyrim at medium settings at 45 fps, I would be happy (my primary rig is RX580, I just want a laptop for when I'm away). I want something with an SSD (or something I can easily slap an SSD into). Beyond that, I'm pretty open to ideas. I would want to avoid Acer, because they refused to honor the warranty on the current laptop, and I don't want to deal with that again if I run into issues. Ability to run Linux is a big plus. It would also be nice to avoid anything that looks too "edgy gamer" type thing, but I'm not going to let that be a deal breaker. I also live 5 minutes from Microcenter, so keep their prices in mind. submitted by /u/WaitForItTheMongols [link] [comments] |

[USA] General Use/Moderate Gaming Laptop, $1k or less Posted: 30 Mar 2019 06:11 AM PDT My wife and I have two old laptops (2010 Macbook Pro, 2009 Dell). [USA] Looking for a laptop for digital art & music production <$2500 Posted: 30 Mar 2019 08:04 PM PDT Hi all, I'd appreciate suggestions for a good laptop for working frequently in Adobe programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier mainly) as well as music production software (Ableton). I multitask a lot and also frequently have music or videos running and tons of tabs up for research. I've been using a 2013 Macbook Pro until it died recently. I've been looking at 2015-2018 MBPs and the Huawei Matebook Pro X from 2018. Staying with Mac isn't super important to me, it works for me but if there's other computers that can handle my work I'm all for it. Mainly I'm just looking for the best value for what I pay in terms of processing power, display quality, build quality, and longevity. Budget of less than $2500. Please let me know whatever suggestions yall may have! Thanks in advance. [Philippines] Laptop at around $2000 for media use? Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:25 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: Around $2000 (USD) - Lower the better [Philippines]
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Ergonomics first (importance on display and keyboard) then specs second
- How important is weight and thinness to you? 6 out of 10 importance
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" laptops
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using this as a workstation first. So CAD, video/photo editing, graphics design, web design and app design. Then gaming second
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No game preference but I do want the device if possible to have atleast something equivalent or higher to a GTX 1060 6gb (could go lower if the display and other factors are better than a 1060 device)
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The most important for me is the display (color accurate [≥90% sRGB] + bright screen [≥ 300 nits]) and a good keyboard followed by having good specs and build quality last (had a dell Inspiron I bought in 2016, which broke down 4+ times with moderate use – I have a mid-2010 13" MBP (Bought at launch) that I used all the time until recently and has never broken down once, I even had the thing plugged and turned on without rest for months at a time)
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I already have a 2014 15" MBP (recently bought to replace my 2010 MBP) as a primary workstation (have no intention to getting the newer MBPs with their horrible keyboards and minimal spec increment changes). I would be using this as a workstation aswell in a similar fashion to my MBP. Thanks! :D

My annoying wife wants me to get a gaming machine for my annoying 10 year old. Help me. Posted: 30 Mar 2019 06:08 PM PDT I need to look like I'm trying, so please give me suggestions. I don't want to spend $1500 but I don't want something that plays like ass. The little shit will probably only play fortnite on it. So I need something that will run it smoothly without him crying about 'default-skin sweaties'. submitted by /u/oblivia17 [link] [comments] |
Laptop for school work Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:55 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $500 USA. Closer to $300 would be great. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life and best specs How important is weight and thinness to you? Something lightweight and thin to carry around in my backpack Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows (preferred) or Chrome OS (unsure about chrome OS. Is it possible to install windows 10 on it?) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably less than 14 inches. Something that I can bring around in my backpack. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. N/A If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and touchscreen (optional but would be nice) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I do not know much about laptops and do not know what has the best specs for my budget. I plan to use this PC for just normal school work but I want something still powerful enough to handle some programs opened like chrome, spotify, and microsoft word at the same time. If more info is needed then ask away. I will try to answer the best I can. Thanks for your guys help! submitted by /u/Pray_Plague [link] [comments] |
Acer predator Helios 300 Posted: 30 Mar 2019 05:20 PM PDT Hello guys, I am planning on buying Acer Helios 300 as I need a new laptop. I will use it for coding and light gaming ( like CS GO or League or Legends) It seems like a good deal for my budget, but i wanted to see more opinions. And one more thing, if somone has tested this laptop, what can you say about the battery life? I know a gaming laptop will have a bad battery, but i am hoping it still lasts for at least 3 hours while coding ( not gaming)If any one has any other advice it will be well received. Thanks! submitted by /u/RazviH [link] [comments] |
Looking for laptop for photography work. Posted: 30 Mar 2019 06:02 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: UK, up to £1000, but would prefer £800 or less if it's not critical Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm sorry, I don't really understand the 2 in 1 bit. I did a quick search, but still unsure what it means. Probably best spec over battery. How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want a lead brick, but it's not really important. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger is better, Edit: on Second thought, 14 inch is probably fine. Still much bigger than the screen on my camera! Lol Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop and Lightroom mainly. Occasionally Premiere Pro, but it's not important. Using it for quick uploads when tethered vis Lightroom or Capture One important. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good screen! Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I work as a photographer and have reached th stage where I need to have a laptop with me on a shoot, not just when I get home. submitted by /u/showmm [link] [comments] |
