Any Reason to Keep Discrete GPU (Don't Game Anymore) Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:18 PM PDT I built my computer with a GPU to play games with friends. Now that I don't have time to game anymore, is there any reason to keep the GPU, rather than just using the Intel iGPU? I do have dual displays. Is Windows at all faster with a discrete GPU? So I bought a new gaming computer a month ago (running windows 10) and it is working fine except for some very little things like this one I found. It is not an emergency but I would like help to find out what is happening. Ty. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Mar 2019 04:48 PM PDT Hello I have a PC with an ssd (where Windows 10 is running of) and an HDD so I can save my files. Yesterday I saw some weird behavior on the hard drive. Some programs were loosing their data (which were saved on hdd) upon every launch. Also sharex (a screenshot program) couldn't save the screenshots (which are being saved on the hdd). Then I rebooted my pc and hdd was not even read by the os. So I opened the pc case and I unplugged and replugged the sata cable of the hard drive. After booting up hdd was fine so I quickly backed up all the important files from there and I used the pc normally. Today when I tried to open Android Studio (which is installed on the hdd) it gave me an error. I figured out that the exe was corrupted and after a while I realized that all the hdd folders where empty. When I ran an chkdsk it said that its a raw drive and it can't be checked. So I rebooted and everything is fine (again). I'm currently backing up the rest of the hdd files. So I'm confused. Is it a Windows bug or my hdd is dead? PS: Android Studio is now working okay [link] [comments]
Struggling with making Windows 10 detect wired xbox one controller Posted: 30 Mar 2019 04:41 PM PDT Yesterday my xbox one controller (wired) that i use on my pc worked fine, booted up my pc today and found out that windows wouldnt wanna have it at all. The controller gets power from the pc, i can hold in the xbox-button to make it blink without batteries, but i cant seem to use it. When i plug it in, the controller vibrates for a split second, but nothing else. Sometimes it shows up on device manager as a gray icon, sometimes not at all. (I know how to see hidden devices) I have tried different cables and with two different xbox one controllers. There is no glitching in the usb-port i dont think, i can wiggle my port around gently without it losing connection. os: W10 64bit If anybody could guide me through the troubleshooting, i would be very grateful! Driver not compatible with Windows 10 Posted: 30 Mar 2019 04:30 PM PDT I was just trying to install Windows 10, but my graphics driver (AMD Radeon HD 7520G) isn't compatible with Windows 10. The installer said "There could be problems with Windows 10 display/screen." I really want W10, but I don't know if I'll get major problems or even if I could update them. What can I do? Surface pro 3 starting problems Posted: 30 Mar 2019 08:11 PM PDT Like almost 4 yrs ago I bought a Surface Pro 3 but for the last 2 years it's having a problem when turning on. It won't turn on immediately it would stay as frozen showing the "Surface" I first thought it was loading something but once I let for even hours and didn't change. I would have to restart it 3 times before it finally works, works like a charm always on the 3rd try it will turn on but it's annoying when you are in a hurry. Also after the first year it was having problem with the touchscreen, at the time I found something like the "ghost click/touch" i found a temporary solution by calibrating the screen but after some point didn't work anymore so I just disable the touchscreen completely which is basically disabling its tablet function. Has anyone had the same problems? Any solution available? Spec: Surface pro 3 i3, 4gb Ram Originally with windows 8, but currently upgraded to windows 10 [link] [comments]
create bootable USB using Rufus Posted: 30 Mar 2019 08:04 PM PDT Created a bootable USB drive using Rufus, but for some reason the drive doesn't show up when I boot up Windows. Is there a reason for that? Are bootable drives not supposed to show up in windows explorer? Why so? [link] [comments]

Need some help with driver installation. Posted: 30 Mar 2019 03:35 PM PDT So I've had this Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Adapter for Windows for a few years and every time I reinstall Windows I have to set it up again. I just have to go to device manager and find the one device that is labeled unknown and I manually install the drivers myself. Well now when I go to do that I can't find the unknown device. I did some digging and found out it is being recognized as a HiD Keyboard Device. Is there any way I can get it to be unrecognized again? I've already uninstalled the driver, it didn't help. Task Scheduler - Automate Add Task Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:00 PM PDT Hello, I need to add a high-priority task to Task Scheduler on multiple PCs. How can I automate this, and how do I set it to be one of the first tasks to launch? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:52 PM PDT Hey all, so i recently had to reset my pc, and after getting everything i noticed that my pc is handling very weird app instalations, for example when i try to install discord thought their setup file it wont let it modify the registry to properly install (even tho i tried everything i came across), the only way i did was by extracting the files from the setup until i could open the exe file within; Then steam is having some problems while installing some games or apps and not having permission to edit the registry, or Wallpaper Engine that can't edit the registry and always does a first time setup when i open my PC, at this point i need to know how to actually make it so that windows can allow apps to modify the registry so i can actually use my PC. Any help is welcome, thanks in regards. [link] [comments]
Just updated Windows 10 and now there's a weird bug with Notepad's line count Posted: 30 Mar 2019 09:47 AM PDT After some thorough testing, I figured out what the bug is. Basically, whenever you have a document with a line that's so long that it automatically wraps to the next line, all of the text in that line and above is counted as line 1 then everything below that line is counted as normal. To duplicate this bug: 1 - open a fresh Notepad and ensure that View > Status Bar is enabled 2 - type a bunch of gibberish with line breaks 3 - type a line so long that it automatically wraps to the next line 4 - type more gibberish with line breaks 5 - put your cursor at the beginning of the document then keep tapping the down key and see how it counts the lines normally in the status bar 6 - save the document, close it, then open it again 7 - repeat step 5 and this time, you'll notice that every line is line 1 until you get to the wrapped line then everything after will be line 2, 3, 4, etc. This bug is annoying as I work in Notepad all the time and rely on line and column counts but now, it's all messed up. I hope this gets fixed soon. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:43 AM PDT I've got an Alienware m17 laptop running Windows 10 Pro and struggling to figure out why hibernate after sleep isn't working as expected (the setting in Control Panel -> Power Options -> Edit Plan Settings -> Change advanced power settings -> Sleep -> Hibernate after...) Using the default value of 180 minutes, the computer simply wakes itself after this time and then doesn't hibernate, eventually sleeping again due to idle. This will happen repeatedly if left idle the whole time, waking and sleeping multiple times a night. However, with low values under around 25 mins, it works correctly. Hibernating immediately through the start power menu also works fine. When it's working, the wake source is reported in Event Viewer as "S4 Doze to Hibernate" but when it's not working, it's reported as "Unknown" despite resuming at the time configured - almost as if it's forgotten why it's waking. Running Any ideas why this might be happening? I'm dual booting with Linux installed on a different drive. Briefly I thought it could be due to the hardware clock mismatch (Linux uses UTC, Windows uses local time) but I'm in the UK, where UTC is the same as the local time, until tomorrow when it becomes Daylight Saving Time. Control Panel and My computer in start menu changed after updating to 1809. Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:26 AM PDT So I run Windows 10 Home, I just updated to 1809 and everything seems fine for the most part, but the control panel and my computer shorcuts that I had pinned in the start menu have changed. My OS is in Spanish and in 1803 the shorcuts were fine, they showed up with the proper name in Spanish, but now they show up as "Control Panel (1)" and "computer (1)". If use the search bar to search the control panel using the Spanish name for it, it'll show up but I get no option to pin it, I can only pin the English one. My computer will show up in English even if I use the Spanish name. Anyone have any idea as to why that might be and how to fix it? I don't mind having the names in English that much and everything works correctly and is on the correct language once you click it, but the (1) and especially the lack of capital c on "computer (1)" is driving me crazy. Sharing to Android Easily Using Bluetooth? Posted: 30 Mar 2019 08:18 AM PDT I thought that "Right Click > Share > Looking for Nearby Devices" was using Bluetooth or WiFi, but it seems that it has to be another Windows 10 device. There also isn't an option to share using Bluetooth in the options below that either, so how can you easily share a file using Bluetooth without going to "Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Send or receive files via Bluetooth > Send files > Choose the device > Next > Browse> Navigate to the file you want to share > Open > Finish" (which is easily a 5 minute process for something which should take 20 seconds through the Share menu in context menu). Permanent icons for shortcuts? Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:47 AM PDT I have a few apps that I rarely use installed to an External SSD. I have no problems there whatsoever, they run great for me. However, when my SSD is disconnected, the icons in the start menu for the shortcuts to these apps disappear, replaced by a generic file icon. I get why this is happening of course, they are trying to point to files which at that moment in time aren't accessible. However, is there any way I can give these shortcuts permanent icons? TIA!
