This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

DDR2 disguised as DDR4 on eBay

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:21 AM PST

I recently bought 64GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666MHz DDR4 ram for a Threadripper build I'm putting together, and when it came time to put everything together and I actually opened up the box, I realized the ram was an elaborate fake. The packaging was real, but instead of 16GB DDR4 sticks it was actually old DDR2 sticks with genuine Corsair Vengeance DDR4 outer shells stuck to them with double sided tape. Pretty wild. Has anyone else ever ran into something like this? Here's are some pictures:

    https://imgur.com/gallery/UiyU35F

I don't believe the seller was attempting to rip me off, as they have a 15 year old eBay account and a 99.6% positive rating with nearly 2,000 seller ratings. They promptly refunded me and didn't make me send back the fake ram. The seller seems to mostly resell board games and some toys, so this was a bit of an odd item for them, and I assume someone ripped them off. There wasn't anything about the listing to make it seem shady. Good seller. Real pictures of the packaging clearly taken by the seller themselves. Normal enough pricing. I paid $300 + $10 shipping via a "buy it now" option, which definitely would have been a great deal, but it's not "too good to be true" territory for an item listed as "Open box, new item." I just figured I'd gotten lucky and stumbled across a good deal very soon after it had been listed.

Anyway, after I got my refund I ordered 64GBs of 3000MHz Crucial Ballistics Tactical ram, which should get here by Friday, so my build will be complete soon. Thankfully I'm mostly just writing right now instead of video editing, so the delay this caused hasn't really affected my work at all. But I figured you guys might like to know about this so you can be on the lookout for it.

Are the build guides on PCPartPicker reliable?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:00 PM PST

I'm a beginner looking to build a pc and I'm willing to spend a decent amount of money on a relatively high end rig, but I'd prefer to avoid overspending on overpriced/unnecessary gear. Are the build guides here (specifically, this one) trustworthy or would I be better off elsewhere? I use a computer mostly for music production, as well as gaming and occasional video production. Any advice would be really appreciated!

http://imgur.com/t4q83LC I am pleased to announce my first ever and dream build since I was 15 (now 20) went without a hitch, and the results are better than I could've ever expected, now I'm gonna need to get some games! Thank you all for helping me out, I couldn't of done this without you all. If I could thank every single one of you individually who has helped me over the past few weeks, I really would. Without you guys I couldn't of made this dream of mine a reality, so really - from the bottom of my heart - thank you all so much.

PC Reboots when trying to game

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:54 PM PST

Hi, I just put together a build/upgraded most of my old system. Installed a fresh Windows 10 and everything seemed fine for a few hours until I tried gaming. Whenever I launch a game I seem to be able to get to the main menu, but when I launch into the actual game I don't get there because the PC reboots when it's supposed to load into the game.

New components are: MSI B450M Mortar Titanium, Ryzen 5 2600x, G. Skill 2x8GB DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 Ripjaws V. Old components are my Msi Geforce 1070, Cooler Master G750M, 750W and a SSD I can't find the name of but it's only about 6 months old.

All temps seem fine, have monitored CPU with Ryzen master and it likes to stick around 38-48C (Stock cooler). Case is a Fractal Design R5 With a 140mm in the back and 140mm in the front. I might be imagining it but the PSU seems to be noisier than it was before. One thing to mention with Ryzen Master is the "EDC (CPU)" seems to hover around 90-100% of 125 A with a limit of 168 A. Don't know what this means.

    Thank you for your time

    First build in 5 years

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 10:18 PM PST

I've been wanting a new PC for a good year, but money was short. About 2 months ago, I really started to make my build and here I am, I finally got a new PC. I mostly play PUBG right now and wanted to be able to stream. I also am a student in Graphic Design and needed an update in order to properly run the softwares

Calling all music producers! i7 9700k or Ryzen 7 2700x?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:47 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

Hope all is well. I was just wondering, I'm looking to build a new PC to replace my old, outdated laptop. I do exclusively music production (Ableton Live 10 being the main program, which I believe has multithreading support, more here: https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209067649-Multi-core-CPU-handling-FAQ), and video editing as well. I dont really play games anymore, so I'm not looking for a graphical powerhouse; music is the main priority with video editing being second.

So my question is, which processor is better for this type of work? They both have 8 cores, so I know historically Intel has had the advtange of more power per core, but I'm not so sure if that's the case anymore. I don't mind to spend a little more if it means I have more power to do my work well.

    Thanks!

First gaming PC - would love help on if ok! Also ideas on widescreen monitors?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:16 PM PST

Would love some help - my first build ever and I'm so excited about this! Just need a little review to build confidence to buy.

Mainly done from own research but then used PCPartPicker build as base (nice looking case too) and LogicalIncrements.

    1. Does this look sensible and anything I'm obviously missing?

I wanted it really quiet so had deliberately left out HDD - boosted SDD - and used water cooler even though scares me silly on how to install.

    1. Any suggestions on cool widescreen high spec monitors? I'm not sure how to match the monitor to the rig..?

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Wanted to play some online games at high spec - particularly Eve (for my sins). Have a pretty home computer as first time can afford a high end machine...

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Budget pretty decent (~£2,000 for rig) and based in UK

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

GPU usage under 1% in games like GTA V and Black Ops 4

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 06:01 AM PST

I just built a new PC and i was hoping this would be fixed with it. On my last build my FPS was horrible. Now its playable but very annoying. What could cause this? Is my GPU broken or what? I have only checked this with Task Manager on my new build, but on my last build MSI Afterburner showed under 1% GPU usage.

Running Ryzen 2200g iGPU along with RX 580 dGPU

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 11:57 AM PST

    Hey,

How exactly does vega iGPU work with dedicated RX 580?

If I switch hdmi cable from one gpu to another, I get rendered desktop in both cases.

If I have looked into Radeon manager, both cards are recognized, no driver update available (have not installed anything after plugging in RX 580)

Looking for drivers online results in the same versionhttps://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/radeon-500-series/radeon-rx-500-series/radeon-rx-580https://www.amd.com/en/support/apu/amd-ryzen-processors/amd-ryzen-3-desktop-processors-radeon-vega-graphics/amd-ryzen-3-0

Do I need to set something in the bios? Are both drivers up to date? Can I switch between both GPUs as simply as switching the HDMI port? What if I plug one RX to one monitor and vega to another (don't have two monitors right now)

Can I just switch hdmi cable and run vega for office work in ordet to be more power efficient and switch cable when playing games? Does the unplugged gpu draw no power?

    Friend needs build help

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:40 PM PST

My friend needs some build help, and I cannot really help him as I have never fully built a PC, only replaced parts in pre-built ones (hopefully this sub doesn't rip me to shreds). He went ultra cheap with his build: MSI B250M pro-vd motherboard, Intel Pentium g4560, 1060 3gb, has one stick of samsung 16gb ram unsure of the exact model, as he had it lying around at home. He plans on upgrading the Pentium, as well as his 128gb ssd and 350w power supply when he gets more money, but for the time being he just wants to get his pc up and running. He says it will power on, however, it will not boot and the cpu ez debug light comes on, he said he can't get to the bios. He originally tried an intel i5 7500 (another part he had lying around), and when that didn't work he figured it was the processor, got the pentium to try to get it to boot, but now that it doesn't again, he is convinced it is the power supply. I told him my guess was that it was the ram or wasn't because of one of the components. Sorry if the information is lackluster, but this is all I have, and I don't have any pictures at the moment. I really appreciate any input you guys may have.

My first build (~700 dollar budget)

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:45 PM PST

Hello, you might have seen a post similar to this a couple days ago, as i was looking for help and didn't really receive it. This is my first build, and will mainly be playing games like fortnite, but a mix of more graphically demanding games also. My budget is around 700, so I was looking at this (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H6n3D2) but I don't know how that build turns out. Thanks

    ###Troubleshooting Help:

I just got all the parts to my first build in and got done building. I went to turn it on before I finished cable management and nothing at all happens. No lights, no sounds, no indication that the PSU much less the MOBO turned on. Im freaking out. Ive read through some past posts and tried to troubleshoot on my own but so far nothing is working. I removed the GPU, wireless card, both sticks of ram (then tried with just one), redid the front panel connections with and without the little tool that came with the motherboard, reconnected the power lines.... I dont know what else to do.

    9700k vs 2600 vs wait - 144hz-165hz 1440p

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:50 AM PST

    Hello.

I am planning to upgrade my current PC to a new one.

    My current specs are:

    CPU: i5 4670k @ 4.4Ghz

    GPU: Gigabyte 2080 Gaming OC

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz DDR3

I had a 770 gtx card, and a 1080p monitor, which I upgraded to a 27 inch 165hz 1440p monitor and a 2080 card, so I could play at 144hz 1440p. I also recieved a new case, which is an ITX. My current is an ATX.

So I started looking at my options for the Mobo+CPU+RAM, but I am nowhere near a decision, I just can't make a decision, so I hoped you good people here could help me out.

    My options are:

Buy a b450 board and a Ryzen 2600 plus some Samsung B-Die RAM @ 3200Mhz CL14, and then upgrade when Ryzen 3xxx comes out. Price:

    • Asrock B450 ITX: 121€

    • Ryzen 2600: 169€

    • 3200Mhz CL14: 215€

Total 505€ + cost of new Ryzen(Thinking of buying the 3850 if the rumours hold) and maybe new motherboard (Depends on the whole PCI lanes thingy on the new 550/570 boards).

    Option two would be:

Very good mobo, very good CPU and good RAM:

    • 9700k: 456€

    • Asrock Z390 ITX: 208€

    • 3200Mhz Cl16: 134€

    Total cost: 798€

Both options will have a resale value of my current setup (Ryzen option will have double resale)

Now, my current PC has lasted me since 2013 and I want my new PC to last me many (at least 5) years as well. I just can't decide which of the options are smarter. The Ryzen one seems like a good choice on paper, but seeing as I need to buy good RAM and possibly upgrade the Mobo to get full usage of the new Ryzen down the line, the cost amount s to the same, i think?

It would be easier to say "Just wait for the Ryzen Zen 2 to come out" but seeing as rumours were "it launches in march" now got changed to July, but I have already waited since fall last year and it seems I can always wait for some new tech to come out, I don't know if I can wait much longer. My fingers are tingling to build the new PC, sinc eI've been staring at the new case for quite some time now.

My usage is Gaming only. I play Dota 2, AAA games.. well.. all kinds of games really, so what option do you think I should go?

Intel? AMD? or just straight up wait till July?

    PSU - ryzen 1600 + gtx 1070

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:29 PM PST

My PSU just died and I am trying to figure out my best options. Ive got a Ryzen 5 and a gtx 1070 and was thinking sweet spot was 650w. I've settled on the seasonic focus plus but they only have an MIR for the 550 or 750, 750 is $20 more. Is it worth just going for the 750? Would I have any issues in the future going with a 550?

    2500K, R9 280X used PC for 150€

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:04 AM PST

    Guys, I need opinions:

I'd have a deal on the following rig:

    • i5 2500K on a Asrock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 Mobo
    • 8 GB DDR3 Ram (2x4) EDIT: obviously ddr3 sorry
    • MSI R9 280X 3 GB
    • 2 128 EVO 840 SSD
    • An unidentified massive Noctua Single heatsink with a Noctua Fan
    • 3 Noctua Case Fans

The other components are nothing to rave about, but we're „modern" when the PC was built.

My question is, is this a good buy for 150€? The R9 280X seems to still be usable for 1080p gaming. However, what about the 2500K? I will obviously clock it as high as possible (with that heatsink I suppose I can do even 1.45v probably) but I am a little concerned about the lack of hyperthreading. Is this cpu something that will do for another 2 years or should I look into a different system?

    Is Ryzen 5 2600 + RX 580 a good build ?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 05:17 AM PST

I am finally switching over from laptop gaming to PC gaming and this is my first PC build. I would deeply appreciate your views over my build or any modifications I should do to it.

    Build : ( Budget - 750$ (converted from INR))

    Ryzen 5 2600 Rx 580 8gb (sapphire) GIGABYTE B450 Corsair Vengeance 3000mhz 8GB RAM 550W PSU 1TB HDD Corsair Carbide Case + 1 fan extra for exhaust

Also note : Rx580 is cheaper than 1060 where i live. This build fits into my budget so i cant probably go over this. The 750$ dollar may be misleading as I used the google conversion rate and prices in US and India might differ. But any modifications is welcomed.

    Thanks in advance

    1660ti or 2060

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 08:12 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm planning to build my first PC soon and have some trouble deciding between these 2 GPUs. I will be using a 1080p60hz monitor and want to be able to play AAA titles on the highest settings at a constant 60fps for the next few years. Would the 1660ti be able to handle this or would it be safer to pay extra for the 2060?

    Upgrade from 750ti to 1050ti?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:54 PM PST

Long story short. I'm looking to upgrade my PC after a couple years of having the 750ti but i don't know if it's worth it. I run an AMD A5800k CPU and 8GB of RAM so as far as i know a bottleneck won't be an issue As you might have noticed i'm on a budget and honestly i'm not that interested in doing a full upgrade anytime soon since money is tight tight now, i don't care about fancy graphics either but i could like to play newer games at a decent framerate since things like MHW are playable but really tank when things get messy. Thanks in advance guys.

Hi guys, while I know the general consensus is that 16gb is enough, I was wondering if there is nevertheless any point in upgrading my ram from 16gb to 32gb (DDR 4 ripjaws V, 3200). I mainly play racing games like Assetto Corsa / PC2 and other games like dark souls 3. Perhaps I will stream in the future as well.

The reason I ask is because these are currently discounted from 190 to 120 euros in my area.

The rest of my build is as follows:

    Mobo: Asrock extreme 4 CPU: 8700k i7 GPU:Nvidia 2080 Storage: Samsung evo 860 (1 TB + 500 GB) PU: Corsair RM750x Case: meshify c Cooler: Dark rock pro 4 Ram: DDR 4 ripjaws V, 3200

    Thanks for all the input!
