Building 16 computers for a non profit. Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:29 AM PST Hi everyone, I work for a local non profit and I am replacing the computers in our tech lab. you've been so helpful with my previous projects I have one more big job that I am reaching out for help with. Our organization received a large grant to run a tech program teaching coding to kids between 7 and 12 years old. A portion of that money is allowed to go towards buying new supplies and we want to build new computers in our tech lab. Obviously bang for our buck is the most important factor here and I'm not sure if any parts manufacturers have systems in place in Canada to support non profits in purchasing parts or computers. I built a system on PC Parts picker but I also know that many of the stores I want to buy from will run out of stock before I buy 16 systems worth. I am hoping to spend $400.00 Canadian on the builds we do not need monitors operating systems or mice and keyboards we only need cases and components. These kids deserve decent computers I would like them to be able to play basic games and use 3d modeling / video editing software (I don't expect great performance but at least tolerable). My big questions are: How do I get around the stocking issue for these parts. Is there an organization I can reach out to with support for this kind of build (other than you guys!) **Edit** THANK YOU!! the response to this post has been amazing. I have found a great prebuilt pc on https://www.pcliquidations.com thanks to a suggestion from /u/VicticLusion and a partner of our organization will present the price we got to a dealer they work with to see if they can get us a better deal. This project is goign to come in WAY under budget thanks to your support! thanks again /r/buildapc! **Edit 2 the one about my ego** I'm aware this is a terrible build (I wasnt when I built it but I am now) I just assembled it quickly to show people my price range and desired specs. Here is my template build: [PCPartPicker part list](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/dNMhw6) / [Price breakdown by merchant](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/dNMhw6/by_merchant/) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [AMD - FX-6300 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/PnxfrH/amd-cpu-fd6300wmhkbox) | $91.72 @ Amazon Canada **Motherboard** | [Gigabyte - GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/z3rG3C/gigabyte-motherboard-ga970ads3p) | $89.99 @ Newegg Canada **Memory** | [Patriot - Signature 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 Memory](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/CnW9TW/patriot-memory-psd38g16002) | $47.99 @ Amazon Canada **Storage** | [Seagate - Momentus Thin 500 GB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/kDYXsY/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st500lt012) | $46.02 @ Amazon Canada **Case** | [Corsair - 200R ATX Mid Tower Case](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/cTQypg/corsair-case-200r) | $68.99 @ Powertop **Power Supply** | [EVGA - BT 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply](https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/GQX2FT/evga-bt-450w-80-bronze-certified-atx-power-supply-100-bt-0450-k1) | $29.99 @ Canada Computers | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* | | Total (before mail-in rebates) | $394.70 | Mail-in rebates | -$20.00 | **Total** | **$374.70** | Generated by [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com) 2019-02-05 11:19 EST-0500 | P.S.: My veteran friend from my last post has ordered his parts and is waiting on a back ordered case I will provide update when the build is complete you guys saved him a lot of money! Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:19 PM PST So I'm building my first ever pc and my Asus Strix Geforce Gtx 1070 doesn't seem to fit into my MSI B450 motherboard. It's really frustrating since that's the last thing I need to put in to test it out. EDIT : Welp I'm a dumbass I forgot to take out that covering thing which didn't let me install it, sorry for wasting everyone's time. I'm going to go off myself real quick Further Edit : PC seems to turn on but now it doesn't seem to want to boot I'll have to check on the cables once i get back from school, any tips would be appreciated, and if you know where I can go to get it inspected in the US then that'd be appreciated too. Even Further Edit LOL : So it seems that I plugged my monitor into the mobo instead of the gpu which I needed to I guess since my cpu doesn't have any integrated graphics. These simple mistakes are going to be the end of me 😔 Will update once I get back home to see if that was the only problem. LAST EDITKSSKSKSK : Ladies and gentleman we got him 🤝 It booted :)))))) Thanks to everyone that helped and gave tips 🙈 [link] [comments]
PC insanely sluggish/slow after blue screen error Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:27 AM PST Hi I was playing apex legends earlier today and my pc crashed with the whea uncorrectable error. Ive had the pc crash before playing games which I assume was because of my gpu getting too hot, although before everything worked perfectly fine after turning it on again in those instances. This time though the pc is very slow. Task manager shows my cpu usage spiking a lot even just using reddit with one tab open. I tried resetting the bios and using chkdsk which didnt seem to make a difference. The pc has a Inno3d gtx 1080, ryzen 7 1700, 16GB of ram an msi b350 PC mate motherboard and a samsung 500 GB SSD. Its also worth noting that despite my pc having good parts it doesnt perform as highly as it should in games when compared to almost identical setups. Any help is appreciated :) [link] [comments]
A big huge thank you to each and everyone of you! Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:52 AM PST Hello and welcome to a poor man's mATX build. When I discovered this subreddit for the first time, I had no idea that DIY PC building had gotten so popular over the years! Last I cared to check in the PC enthusiast community, it was 7 years ago when I first built my custom gaming/multimedia development PC with an i7-2600k, 8 GB dual channel 2133MHz G.SKILL RIPJAWS RAM, Corsair TX750W and a Zotac GTX 560Ti. Being the novice I was, I had to ask someone for help on tomshardware to put together a build for me, then I took it to the local computer shops in my area and had a pro build it for me. That PC is still going strong today and I sold it two months ago to a guy who wanted to ascend to the pcmasterrace for $400. He was literally ecstatic and kept sending me compliments for a week straight, after acquiring the PC. Before I further belabor the point, let me get back to saying that after selling my PC, when I came back to the PC building scene, needless to say everything had changed. And thanks to this sub, I learned a lot during my research into what I should buy for my new build. You guys even helped me with my troubleshooting a couple days ago when my brain froze due to simple mistake while putting all the parts together. Seeing so many people who have never done anything like this, posting everyday about their experiences, emerging victorious and giving me the strength to do it. And today, thanks to all that from this sub (and the Ironman Project Music playing in the background; oh and special thanks to the Google assistant for the role of Jarvis as I kept asking her to google queries everytime I ran into silly little issues), I have finally ascended once again. This is my build on PCPartPicker Not the best cable management ever, but that's all you can do with this not-so-cable-management-friendly case and a non-modular power supply. In my defense, I bought this specific case (after a lot of research) because in my budget, it was the only micro ATX form factor case which had open ventilation, exceptionally flexible modular design and a very good potential to maintain thermals within satisfactory limits of all the cases I had seen. Seriously, during the AIDA64 stress test which I ran for 2.5 hours, my R5 2600 was comfortably maintaining 51 degrees Celsius constantly while at 100% load. It idles at 30 degrees. That's impressive. Credit where due- the 200mm gigantic Thermaltake fan at the front and the Noctua AF-14 PWM with it's anti-vibration silicon mounts keep the PC cool and quiet like the wind. As for the PSU, I really did try but the Corsair TX550M and the CX500M semi-modular PSUs were literally out of stock everywhere in the country. I do not know how that happened and it's mind boggling, but it did. I even ran Userbenchmark to determine if the system is performing up to the expectations: UserBenchmarks: Game 74%, Desk 85%, Work 75%
Overall, I'm pretty happy that everything worked out fine. I was really worried about the worst case scenarios where a part is DOA as this was a piecemeal build (Or "a poor man's build" like I said above); I bought the parts over a span of 3 months, patiently waiting and then jumping on sales as they came so obviously, the parts are out of the return window. Again, thank you all for giving me the strength to build this beast. I was really really nervous, but now I'm overjoyed. Never thought I'd get to apply a coat of thermal paste on a processor myself as I always thought this advanced stuff was only for overclockers, but thanks to you guys, I lost that "virginity" today as well ;D [link] [comments]
Buy a 1060 or wait for the 1660Ti? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:59 AM PST I use what use to be a prebuilt gaming machine, upgraded to contain an i7-6700k and a Gigabyte 1060. Recently the 1060 broke (screen artificating and freezing - more information here), so I have returned it to the seller via Amazon for a full refund. My question now is what graphics card would best replace it? I have a budget of £250, and aim to use the card with the 6700k and 16GB 2400MHz RAM for 1080p60 gaming, and 144Hz competitive gaming (Overwatch etc.). I'm unsure whether to simply get another 1060 (from a different manufacturer?), wait a few weeks for the rumoured 1660Ti, or try an AMD card such as the RX580. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Edit: the refund was in Amazon balance, seeing as that's where I bought the card originally. Sadly that leaves most second hand cards and some good deals off the table. [link] [comments]
Logitech G-Pro Wireless review Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:25 PM PST First off, I got this mouse for free. So perhaps im a little biased. I didn't recieve it for free as a part of the review or something. I returned my G703 after numerous problems with it, and was amazingly offered the G Pro wireless as a replacement pretty much the day it came out, which is amazing. This won't be a super in depth guide or breakdown, just a simple user experience. I personally mainly play FPS games, with a couple of MMO's. I have about 6 years experience in FPS games, and consider myself to be a pretty good "aimer". I've been using the G Pro for about 3-4 months now. I've always been a logitech mouse person, pretty much using them exclusively due to their good value prices, however I have had my fair share of mice. Including the Mionix Castor, Logitech G 403, G703 and a few other popular ones. Feel of the mouse/design: The shape of the G Pro is perfect for me personally, my hands are medium-large in size, and I use the claw grip. And personally I find it to be a good size. I use the mouse without the weight in it, and its incredibly light without it. It's ambidextrous, as you can change the sides of the mouse buttons as they are magnetic, or you can add both to have 2 buttons on each side (which does feel a bit weird, but whatever boats your float). The clicks are very satisfying on this mouse and i've never had a double click issue (I play Runescape and do some pretty intense clicking sometimes). And i've had no problems with my aim with the Hero sensor being very accurate. The scroll wheel is also very nice to use, I personally use my scroll wheel to change weapons on CSGO alot of the time, and the steps on the scroll wheel are at a good level between stiff and loose so I can change my guns accurately with it. Wireless: The wireless features on this mouse are great. With little to no latency at all vs wired after doing tests on humanbenchmark, I peform at about 99.5% of the same reaction time I do vs wired, meaning the delay is so small its not going to affect your gaming experience. And not having a wire to drag along makes a huge difference. When I do have to plug the mouse in to charge (which is very rarely due to its battery life) it feels horrible again, not because the wire is bad. But just because how good it feels without a wire. Battery life: The battery life is set to be around 65 hours of usage. I personally believe it to be more, but I haven't actually timed it. I play with no LED's on and I find myself charging the mouse very rarely. And when I do have to charge it, it charges very quickly. So for instance il plug it in before going to make food or doing some errands and it will have charged up a good amount in that time. Obviously if you charge overnight, or use the logitech charging mousemat this wont be a problem for you. Is it worth £150? (current price in the UK). The £150 asking price is the only negative, in my opinion with this mouse. Its very expensive, but it's also pretty much the best mouse (in my opinion, and many others) on the market right now. And Logitech are pretty much the only person to nail the wireless gaming mouse so far. Personally, i'd wait until it either drops in price a bit, or if you manage to get one at a lower price. But if you can afford to spend £150 on a mouse, then i'd highly reccommend it. I seriously cannot fault this mouse in any way, and I assure you i'm no Logitech fanboy, I had huge problems with my G403 mouse (going through 3 of them due to them shipping out many faulty units). However their support team have always been very good at returning, and even giving free upgrades when returning a mouse. (I originally had a G403, then was upgraded to the G703, then the G pro wireless. So I essentially paid £30 for the G pro). In my opinion the only mouse that comes close to this is the Finalmouse, but with that being sold out basically everywhere and just as expensive on ebay, this mouse is a great buy. TL;DR: Sensor peforms perfectly, good weight, ambidextrous. Wireless has no delay, and very good battery life. Pretty much the perfect mouse, other than the price. This was also my first review ever, so please leave feedback :) If you want a more in-depth guide I highly reccommend this review from Rocket Ninja, dude has an incredible amount of experience with mice, and FPS gaming in general : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeWRU92qMUQ [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:08 AM PST Hi everyone! I'm hoping to get just a little advice on my computer build. I have consulted a couple people in the same research program, but am still feeling a bit trigger shy. I'd love to hear your take on the parts I have chosen. Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. I'm hoping to build a beefed-up work station for research. My work is all data science/statistical modeling, so I need to be able to run a lot of computations and at a pretty reasonable speed (for MCMC and other samplers, if your familiar with the subject). I just want to be able to run scripts in R and Python with a decent amount of efficiency. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) N/A What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? < $2000 In what country are you purchasing your parts? US Post a draft of your potential build here PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant Provide any additional details you wish below. Edit: I realize the motherboard I have chosen is out of stock, and I will need to choose a new one. That's not the part of the build I'm most concerned with, so feel free to ignore it. Computer won't turn on after 1 month of use. Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:58 PM PST I posted yesterday about having trouble turning the computer on. I shut down randomly when I was using it and hasn't been able to turn on since then. I bought a new CX 650M PSU today from Corsair, installed it, and nothing is happening. The rgb light on my motherboard still lights up as did previously with the old PSU. I'm really at a loss for what to do. All the cables are plugged in properly. I don't know if it's the motherboard that is faulty, since it was working perfectly for the past month, and now it just stops? https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/an72c8/pc_wont_power_on_after_1_month_of_use/ [link] [comments]

What should I upgrade first for the best fps performance? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:37 PM PST https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/33183087 What item should I upgrade first to see the biggest increase in FPS? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 01:22 PM PST I'm building a new computer that consists of: 9700k Prime Z390-A 16GB Corsair RGB Pro I'm debating what I should do on my GPU. I really want a 2070, but it seems like the failure rate is so high (I don't want to put up with that) and I feel as if it's not worth the price. I'm open to suggestions but I do want to stick to NVIDIA. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Should I clean / cable manage my PC or leave it alone? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:23 PM PST I know some of y'all will have thoughts on the internal dilemma I'm having, so here it is: I put my dream PC together just about two years ago. When I put it together I didn't give a second thought to aesthetics or cable management. Fast-forward to today - I now have a desk with carefully managed cables, and I have never opened my PC up for cleaning of any sort. So now there's a discontinuity between the cable management ON my desk -vs- IN my PC. Also, I splurged on the components and haven't bothered to clean anything since April 2017. So my question is; have I committed dream-PC malpractice by not cleaning this thing the whole time? Or have I been playing it safe by not endangering the safety of all my parts by not daring to open the thing and spraying it with Wal-Mart air? I'm just imagining me ruining my rig for the sake of the odd cable and dust particle :| [link] [comments]
I'm going to be upgrading either my CPU or GPU for Apex Legends, which should I go for? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:21 PM PST As the title states I'm looking to upgrade either my CPU or GPU for playing Apex Legends. I don't care about graphics/looks, but I do care about visiblity (Meaning running the game at 1080p) and fps. Currently I'm running the game at 1280x960 all low @ 100-144 fps with the following build: i5-2500k overclocked to 4.2GHz GTX970 500GB SSD 16GB Ram I want to upgrade either the CPU or GPU using a budget of about ~$600. I assume my i5-2500k is the big bottleneck, what CPU should I get for this budget? Will I have to get a new motherboard as well? Buying from Sweden/EU. TL;DR: How do I best spend my money to get an increase in fps at 1080p Apex Legends compared to the 1280x960 i5-2500k/GTX970 setup that I currently use? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:32 PM PST So my parents asked me to find a new PC for them to replace their aging 9150e desktop and I need a little advice on what I've come up with. I looked around at prebuilts, but didn't really find anything that I was entirely satisfied with so I turned to building a PC. It's been around 4 years since I've built a PC, and I haven't really kept up with the tech since then, so I went into this a bit blind lol. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Building my first pc for me and my brother, would appreciate help Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:14 PM PST i'm going to buy 2x of each part and have a shop install them as I have no experience with it, I'm also out of the states if that changes things, here's what I came up with PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
The GPU is gonna be a ZOTAC RTX 2060 AMP Edition but I can't find it on pcpartpicker for some reason, our budget barely allows for this pc with the taxes/shipping, do I have everything I need? did I choose anything wrong? Upgrade from R9 390X to RTX 2080Ti not sure on GPU width Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:36 AM PST Hi I'm looking at getting an RTX 2080Ti I will be air cooling so water/liquid is a a no go for me personally. Can this GPU keep temps low enough with a 2 fan 2 slot card? I was looking at EVGA XC (non-Ultra) but after reading about someone's experience they said it was good but it got quite hot I'd like to look at a card with better cooling but the problem is I'm working in quite a small case that's a Micro ATX (Fractal Design Arc Mini R2) which I think limits GPU options due to size. I'm wondering is GPU slot width a standard measurement? because my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA170MX and my MSI R9 390X according to Google is 2.5 slot but on my board it only covers 2 slots. I'm wondering what's the biggest slot width I could manage so I could opt for a better cooled 2080Ti. Also are 3 fans necessary? I've included an image of my motherboard. my r9 390x sits in the slot next to where it says "Killer Ethernet" and expands to cover a second PCIe slot below with fans facing the bottom of case above PSU - theres about 1.5-2cm of space between PSU and where it says "COM" and "TPM" https://i.imgur.com/qL7bbiW.png [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:16 AM PST Ive been saving up for a PC over the past 2 momths and I have $200 already. I want a good PC without spending 5k. Im looking to spend <$1000 on parts and <$500 on accessories. I need some recommendations on parts so here are some preferences. CPU: i7 under $300 RAM: whatever I can get for under $100 SSD: 500gb - 2tb Power supply: doesn't matter, prefer under $75 GPU: I play games like fortnite and csgo, so I need something that can run those on at least 60fps high graphics (not epic, high). I just want a PC that I can play games, listen to music and watch videos without paying $5k. If you have cheaper alternatives for anything, I would appreciate it. Also for accesories: Mouse: <$70 at least 2 side buttons (prefer more), good scroll wheel and no need for lights. Keyboard: <$80, backlight rgb prefered, mechanical and wired Chair: <$120 adjustable height and armrests, good support. Id rather have an ergonomic chair than an rgb 1k dxracer made with unicorn fur. I have a monitor and mousepad, but any options for 60 or 144hz 1-2ms monitors under $150 would help (looking to buy 2, 1 60hz and 1 144hz). A desk would be nice to but I have one. Thank you if you have anything to add, have a good day! :) [link] [comments] |
