    Simple Questions - February 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:17 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Do you POST once outside of the case for a new build?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:13 AM PST

I have all my parts with me except the RAM that's coming to me the day after tomorrow. I thought of putting everything in and just plug in the RAM when its here to get started but a friend advised to do a POST test outside the case. I get it, but what are the odds of high-end parts being faulty out of the box? Just curious.

CPU overclocking vs buying a better CPU

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:54 AM PST

I'm interested in overclocking the ryzen 5 2600 which would require a little extra investment of $70-120 for an appropriate cooler (to overclock to ~4 GHz from 3.4) but for the cost of CPU+cooler it becomes possible to buy something like the ryzen 7 2700 which scores 25% higher on passmark.

So my question is; Is either overclocking or buying a better CPU a better value in this price range (~$1000 build cost)? Does overclocking only make sense for high end builds? What are some good resources to help figure this out? Am I out of my depth?

    Thanks!

Cpu temperatures very high (100 celsius while idle)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:13 PM PST

So my computer has been very sick for a few months. Cpu usage was above 70% even when idle. School and work took too much of my time so I just let it be and didn't use it for the semester but a month ago I decided it was time.

My first reaction was to format it. It made things a little better but I still couldn't open games without getting >30 fps. So i did some searching, realised my cpu was very hot all the time (100 Celcius even when idle). So far I have changed the thermal paste, and the cpu cooler. The thermal paste seems to have made things better but changing the cpu cooler did not change much.

I am out of solutions and would like to hear your thoughts on what the problem could be.

Edit: Cpu is an intel i7-4770K Edit 2: Looks like the problem was simply that i didnt plug in my cooler pump. Sorry for wasting your time everybody. Thanks to everyone who responded!

Some glam shots of my red/white micro-ATX build!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:45 PM PST

[This is adapted from my blog post, which has a few more details and full specs.]

    >> Photo Album <<

Bonus linky to an album showing off my previous rig!

    Background (if anyone cares)

I first built a PC in early 2015, which still ran just fine, and played most of my games at 1440p, high settings (r/patientgamers represent). But I remember the process of building a PC to be really fun, and I wanted to go through it again.

I was a lot more patient with the research, part selection and shipping times this time around because I already had a working gaming PC. I wanted to go with a distinct color scheme because karma. I figured I'd go with white and red to match some of the furniture in my living room.

    The build

Turns out it's very easy to find parts for black and red builds. White and red, not very much. There are barely any cases or mobos that come with that color scheme out of the box, especially mATX, which was a must. I planned the build as a mostly-white build, with hopefully enough red accents that I'd be able to call it white and red. The trick was to buy custom PSU cables and red RAM sticks.

There was a small hiccup related to the 550W PSU I bought not having enough sockets (details linked below), which required me to swap for an unnecessarily higher wattage version. Other than that, the build went smoothly and the PC turned on the first time!

What is the best mechanical keyboard I can buy for under $100?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but whatever. I don't really care about RGB but backlighting is nice. I don't really know what keyboard to buy.

My graphics card doesn't have a DVI output, but I have a 2k monitor without an HDMI input. Would an HDMI to DVI cable deliver 2k gaming to this monitor?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:01 AM PST

Me and my friends are currently in an argument about whether this would work or not.

I have an MSI Armor OC RTX 2070 GPU, and it has essentially every other type of output besides a DVI. If get a HDMI to DVI cable and plug it into the 2k monitor, will it ACTUALLY be 2k?

Thanks in advance. PLease explain your response as i've tried to do research on this without any luck.

Edit: Just a clarification: THE MONITOR ONLY HAS DVI INPUT

Edit: Link to back of the GPU picture and to card itself https://www.evetech.co.za/repository/ProductImages/msi-geforce-rtx-2070-armor-8gb-oc-gddr6-graphics-card-1000px-v1-0005.jpg https://www.amazon.com/MSI-RTX-2070-Architecture-8G/dp/B07JC4MB7V

    Edit: From RabanastranGuard:

"If your 2k monitor has DVI, then it has dual link DVI.

An HDMI 2.0 to dual link DVI adapter will give you 2k output.

A displayport 1.4 to dual link DVI adapter will also allow for 2k.

Dual link DVI supports up to 2560x1600, "2K" is 2560x1440"

PC crashes when i set my RAM to run at 3200 Mhz.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:29 AM PST

First of all, I'm a complete PC builder beginner.

    These are my specs:

    1. MSI GeForce RTX 2070 ARMOR
    2. AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
    3. ASUS ROG STRIX B450-E GAMING
    4. Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB

I've downloaded the latest BIOS version and I'm using the DOCP feature in the BIOS menu and it automatically sets the RAM to 3200 Mhz.

This however makes my PC a mess. Frequent BSODs etc.

Am I doing something wrong here?

I have no idea where to start.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

    Need help choosing a high-end X470 mobo

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:26 PM PST

    Hi /r/buildapc,

I'm looking for some help in choosing between three X470 motherboards: the MSI Gaming M7 AC, ASRock Taichi, and Gigabyte Aorus 7 Gaming WiFi. I was slightly turned off to the Asus Crosshair VII Hero because I'm not sure the price jump between it and the other three is warranted, though I'm open to being persuaded otherwise.

They're all a bit overkill for my current CPU, a Ryzen 5 2600, but I intend to upgrade to a new Zen 2 CPU (likely one of the ones with more than eight cores) once they're released, and I'd like to go for maximum future-proofing. The Gigabyte board looks like it might be the best in terms of heat dissipation on the VRMs and possibly the M.2 slots, but I like that you can flash the MSI board's BIOS without a CPU.

With both the current and upcoming CPUs, I'll be running a liquid cooling loop and overclocking both memory and CPU, though I'm uncertain whether I'll be doing any BCLK overclocking.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Are ASUS GPUs really that bad?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:53 PM PST

So I've been reading through reviews of the ASUS Strix RTX 2080 and almost half of the reviews are about how the card stops working after a week or so. So is it really safe to go with ASUS?

I may be out of my depth in upgrading my new desktop

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 12:40 PM PST

I recently picked up this lenovo desktop and this graphics card. The card fits just fine in the PCI slot and case, but the power source unit didn't have a connector for the graphics card.

I went out looking for a new one and Best Buy's guy recommended this PSU, which unfortunately lacks the 4-pin and 14-pin connectors for the motherboard... So, I picked up a 14to24 pin converter but I'm having trouble finding anything that will convert to the square 4 pin on the motherboard.

I guess my question is: should I return the PSU and get another one that hopefully has the proper connectors, or is there a 4 pin connector converter that will solve my issues?

Is Steelseries Arctis Pro worth it?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:20 AM PST

I have been looking for a new pair of headphones for gaming.

The Steelseries Arctis Pro has just gone on sale for 100 $ which is a fairly good price and thinking about buying them. But I would like to know how these compare to headsets like Beyerdynamics 990 DT or Sennheiser HD 559 which I've also been looking into.

Bonus info - I already own a Audiobox 22vsl soundcard and a Røde microphone which I could use - But it would not be as convenient as my desk is quite small.

Budget gaming PC for my cousin - $1000

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:07 PM PST

Greetings all, I've been tasked with creating a build for my cousin. This will be his intro to PC gaming and I want to do him good. The budget is only $1000 and he has only a monitor right now (msi curved 1080p -144hz). So I have to fit in keyboard, mouse, and OS. I also have a corsair 750 watt from my last build that still works well which I will give to him.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/dudemansky/saved/bmm9Jx

For the card I really don't know what to pick. It seems 1080's and 1070's are way over the budget and I know nothing about AMD cards. I chose the Ryzen CPU because he's interesting in getting into streaming, and I heard that it's better for that.

But yeah I'm pretty open to any ideas or suggestions! Please help us out! Thanks for your time.

Looking to build a PC in preparation for University. How much should I be saving?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:53 PM PST

Hello r/buildapc! First things first this is my first large post on Reddit and I'm probably making some form of rule/formatting/location mistake. If so, let me know and I'll quickly make the necessary changes to make the post rule abiding. Now onto the question.

I've recently been accepted into a game design/development course and it's come to my attention that my 3 year old, mistreated and dusty gaming laptop won't take me through the 4 year program. I'm in need of an upgrade and am looking to make the switch while I still have a steady income. With a start date of September and small monthly payments going into a designated computer savings account I'm looking at a budget of just over $3k (in Canadian dollars) but that number can be increased. Since I'm coming from a laptop I'll also have to look at buying a good monitor and keyboard, which I'm including as part of that total budget. I'm hoping to build a desktop that can run most modern games well at higher/ultra quality graphics settings and also one that can preform the programming, rendering and unoptimized test builds of games that my course will ask of me. After looking around I'm noticing that may be asking a little much of my current projected budget. How much should I have saved up to build/buy said PC, monitor and keyboard at the beginning of the school year?

Thanks and sorry for any mistakes! I'll keep actively reading comments to answer questions/make corrections.
