Cheapest phone to run ONLY Google Maps? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:10 AM PST Hey, Recently I made a thread over at r/cars and while making it realized something. In thee thread I asked for GPS alternatives to put in a car so that it can be located anytime, anywhere. Now the problem is, all the GPS alternatives are monthly subscriptions which sucks. I did however realize while writing the thread that if nothing else presented itself I still have one amazing option: Google Maps Location Sharing! I simply purchase a shit phone. Make an account, activate GPS and share location with me and voila, problem solved for zero subscription fees. Heck, don't even need a damn sim card! Why aren't more GPS trackers like this? GPS is a free service available to all so why aren't there devices simply for tracking without having to pay stupid amounts? Anyway, I'm wondering which phone you'd recommend for this. I might have some old crap at home but unsure if there's a specific version needed to run location sharing or not. Keep in mind the only job this phone has is to act as a location beacon, nothing more. (Also great to have for emergency calls ofc so that's a bonus!). It will be attached to the battery at all times I believe so discharging won't be an issue, especially if it's just gonna standby and do nothing at all. Still, I would like something that can at least stand by for a few, days if the car isn't used.... EDIT: Just as I posted I realized it doesn't even have to run GMaps continually, only for the initial setup so as long as it can install the correct version required for Location Sharing, I'm gold. Changing google/gmail account & Backups Posted: 04 Feb 2019 09:03 PM PST So I'm tired of having my main Gmail account full of spam, so I made second one! I plan to have my Google contacts and photos moved and saved to my new Google account. Will also change bank and other important accounts to my new email. I still want to use the old account to download apps, play games. Also receive emails from certain people like jobs, lawyers ect. Because it has a more professional name. So my first question, how could I get important emails automatically forwarded to my new email? Secondly could I have it automatically delete the forwarded message from my old account after it's forwarded? Lastly i want to have my Android backup to my new Google account, but I want to use my old account to install apps, sign into games and ect. How will this effect my backup if all apps and data are installed using my old account but backed up to my new account? What will happen when I restore my backup? Can I have Google back everything up except apps and app data ? Appreciate any advice or help! [link] [comments] |
YouTube Playback/Soundcloud download Posted: 04 Feb 2019 04:59 PM PST Hi all, So I need to listen to SoundCloud tracks to improve my learning in Spanish. The problem is it doesn't offer download for offline use which is why I used the YouTube app since they also have that option to listen to their tracks. My only problem is I need to play them while I'm on the go without the need for streaming. Since the videos stop playing when you put your devices to sleep, can you suggest [modded] apps that can both download tracks/playlist from SoundCloud or YouTube and has playback feature? I searched the web and they are all suggesting the browser-trick. Then again I can't stream the tracks since it would take a huge sum of my mobile data allocation per month, so offline/download feature is a must. Please recommend those that I wouldn't have to jaibreak/root my device for I don't own a PC as well, and not a techy-techy person. I am using an iPod 5th Gen (iOS 9.something; doesn't support OG YT app) and an Android (5.1.1). Since I don't know if this is the appropriate subreddit, I'd appreciate your help. [link] [comments] |
Need to go to Google.com to Activate* Wi-Fi Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:18 PM PST I was in the middle of updating my Essential phone's DNS setting and decided to see if there happened to be a solution to the problem that's been plaguing me ever since I got my phone. Whenever I connect to a network, the network appears disconnected until I go to google.com to activate* it. For example, I'll be on another app like YouTube failing to load its perspective content and will have to switch to Chrome head to Google and suddenly I'm able to view the content. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:57 PM PST My texts have stopped going through, and whenever I tap on the arrow to download the texts it just loads forever. I let it "download" a 400B text for an hour and it was still going at it. [link] [comments] |
Phone blocks calls from unknown caller Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:04 PM PST I have a weird problem. My LG G4 blocks calls from unknown callers. I checked it with a friend, there are two different things - something like "unknown number" and "blocked number" (but it isn't really blocked). He gets calls from both and I only get from the first one, it goes straight to voicemail with the other. I checked the settings in my phone app and it should receive calls from everyone. Has anyone ever encountered that issue before? I searched the web and couldn't find any solutions... [link] [comments] |
New update notification issues Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:24 PM PST [Solved! See edit below] I have an issue with the update that I just got on my phone today. I have a Samsung galaxy s9. And now I cannot preview my notifications on the lock screen. It shows the icons for what apps have notifications, and if tap that it brings down the notification menu. I've gone through the settings and I have seen like 3 different things. Like one is settings > notifications > messages > in app notification settings. And there I can "preview messages" when they're on the lock screen. Is this supposed to mean I can preview them after I click the icon? Because it does not show the contents of the text. Is there something else I'm missing? Edit: so I figured it out finally but am posting an edit in case anyone else has this issue. So go go settings > lock screen > notifications view style I assumed the notifications was just a switch to turn then off and on. But upon clicking it I saw there were more settings. Hope this helped someone else out! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:36 PM PST Hello. Sorry for the throwaway, I exclusively lurk reddit unless I need to post something. I recently purchased an S9 and I love it. However, much to my frustration I discovered that all of the phone numbers associated with my synced work gmail account appeared in my phone's contact list. I deleted all of these manually and de-synced my gmail accounts, because I'd rather not have coworkers and exes appearing in my phone app's contact lists. However, now when I turn on my phone app, it still makes my employer's entire directory available in the search function. If I start to type anything in there, names of people in my employer's directory pop up. I'd rather not have that because I wouldn't call those numbers anyway. Is there a step I have missed in totally de-syncing the gmail account from my phone? That directory seems to go away when I remove my work gmail from the gmail application. I'd be willing to use a different phone and contacts app. Thanks very much. I know this is a very nitpicky question but I haven't had much luck finding helpful answers with some time spent googling. Weird Apps in Battery Usage, What are they? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:23 PM PST So I was browsing through my battery usage, and I saw three "apps" that were named 99091, 99090 and another one that was something like 10116 (its no longer there) Just wondering if anyone else has come across these apps in their "Battery Usage" or even know what they are? and if i should be worried about these. Samsung S9+ suddenly not allowing hotspot to work. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:50 PM PST So today my S9 Plus started suddenly going into infinite "Checking subscription status..." junk that this device REALLY doesn't need considering almost any other device I know of just lets you turn on the hotspot and just work. Only once has it gone "no data connection available" when it's got the same signal it's had every day I'm home using it. It's gotten to the point I'm ready to huck this thing out in the yard and go into more debt to the phone company just to buy an iPhone that at least lets the hotspot do what it's supposed to. I have to rely on the hotspot because I live in the boonies and it's faithfully worked since I've had it. Every day I've needed it, not a single issue, connects immediately almost, but now it's wanting to just hang up on it inside and outside my home. This is the most infuriating thing because there's no real excuse for it to just do this, no settings have changed, nothing has happened to the phone to even force this to occur. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:48 PM PST I noticed a lot of friends are using different emojis. I've looked into it and they are all emojis from the android oreo update. I'm using an LG G6 however still stuck using old emojis from 7.0 so it seems they never updated as my current software is 8.0 Oreo. Is there a way to fix this or something? I'd prefer to use the new ones, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:56 PM PST I have a 32 GB phone with a 64 GB SD card in it. I formatted the SD as adaptable internal storage, now Android shows 96.00 GB device storage, split between 32.00 GB "Internal shared storage" and 64.00 GB SD card. But when I plug into Windows 10 in MTP mode only an SD card shows up in Windows Explorer and Windows reports 64 GB capacity, not 96. In Android, FX File Explorer sees only "Main Storage" at 64 GB capacity. Device Storage Analyzer sees the total space of /storage/emulated/0 as 64 GB, yet sees /data as 27 GB? /sdcard is a symlink to /storage/emulated/0 In /storage I have /emulated and /self. In /self is /primary, which is a symlink to /storage/emulated/0. /storage/emulated/0 is the only filesystem in /storage/emulated. I'm using Oreo 8.0 on a rooted Moto E5 Plus from MetroPCS. LG G7 ThinQ - experiences. Do you recommend it? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:49 PM PST Hello, I'm interested in buying G7. After a few years LG-free I'm considering going back and buying G7. I had G2, G3, G4, G Pro 2, Flex 2, all really really great phones. After G4 I switched to Xiaomi. I'm in position to chose for around 350€ and in that price range I can go for G7, Mi 8/MIX 2S, Nokia 8.1. Or even pay extra 100€ for Pixel 2XL, OnePlus 6 or Galaxy S9. So, what are your thoughts and experiences with this phone? Any problems (hardware or software)? Is stock camera really that bad? How does it position itself compared to S9, OP6, Mi 8, P20 Pro. How's battery life? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:32 AM PST I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 that I've had for a couple of years, but recently it seems as if my phone space is just gone. I've done the little space cleaning thing through the settings, purged a lot of my apps, and deleted pictures, but I still seem to be lacking space. I know apps and stuff can take up space even after they are installed but nothing seems to be taking up an abnormal amount of space. Can you give me any insight on my issue? [link] [comments] |
Android apps slow after modding with apktool Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:32 AM PST Idk if it's a weird compression issue or what but when I mod an apk using apktool and recompile it, sign it and use it, the file size is much bigger and the app runs super slow. Is there any way to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to get notified when developer respond to your review? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:35 AM PST I review apps from time to time, mostly when I find bug. Developers want more information or want to contact to an email address but since I don't have any notification, it doesn't go any further. Did I disabled something or its not possible to have that kind of notification? [link] [comments] |
Phone gives error when updating from android 7.0 Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:35 AM PST I own an alcatel u5 hd (possibly the most obscure phone ever) but when I try to system update my phone restarts as it should and starts updating but halfway through it says error just error nothing else apart from the android logo lying down then my phone boots normally after a few minutes does anyone have a solution? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:14 AM PST Anytime I stream a video on Facebook, when ending it, the three buttons at the bottom are off the screen so that you can just barely see the tops of them. I can sometimes manage to hit the share button with the S-Pen, but not the other two. Has anyone else seen this issue? See image in comments. [link] [comments] |
How Do I Undo A Google Play Notification Decision? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 05:12 AM PST Last week Google Play popped up a decision box asking whether I wanted to be notified about something. I didn't take long enough to ponder (I admit I only skimmed it) and since I have auto updates turned off, I very much like getting notified about updates so I clicked "yes". I am a fool. When I got a notification about top image viewer I knew I'd made a horrible mistake. I believe that in my haste I signed up for Google Play marketing spam where Google can now tell me about every stupid sale or promotion. Crap, I'm an idiot. Digging around the Google Play app settings, I can't find any way to disable these marketing notifications and would still prefer to get notifications about app updates. How do I disable only these horrible marketing notifications? [link] [comments] |
