Hey r/SuggestALaptop! I need help personally deciding between the new Macbook Air and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 12:43 AM PST

Hey gang! As the title says, I'm looking for a new laptop. I'm a freshman in college and I've saved up so I can afford a nice ultrabook, because I really want to get rid of the $180 Chromebook I've been using since high school. I currently own an Android phone ($200 Moto G6) and a custom Windows Gaming PC, but I'm seriously considering the switch to the Apple ecosystem because I don't use my PC for gaming at all, even though I thought I would (Dad wanted to build it with me). To me, design, reliability and a minimalist OS are very important to me, and I'm getting sick of Windows bloatware (Candy Crush, Bing, Cortana, etc.) so I'm seriously considering jumping full ship to the Apple Ecosystem, which I've heard is really nice. My Dad has an old iPhone 6 I could use instead of the Moto, and I also might invest in a Mac Mini. However, I do really like Android (Google Assistant is nice) and Apple can be a bit expensive. However, Apple has best reliability and longevity from what I've heard. What do you guys think? Should I stick with Windows/ Android or jump ship to the Apple Ecosystem?

Laptop for programming with SSD and 16 GB - alternatives for HP Omen?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 03:22 AM PST

    Hello!

I am about to buy a new laptop which will mainly be used for Programming.

    My requirements are:

    • SSD drive for quick boot-time and start-time
    • 16 GB RAM to be able to work with multiple heavy IDEs
    • i7 processor
    • Price within 1.5k
    • At least 15 inch display

As for now, I am considering the HP Omen, but the problem is, I am paying extra for the GPU which I don't really need.

I also took a look at Apple products, but they seem to be much more pricey and offer worse components (DDR3 RAM opposed to Omen's DDR4), 2-core processors (6-core Omen), 13-inch display..

So, do you think that the Omen is the right choice? Also, can you think of any good alternatives?

I don't know why but I feel that buying a gaing laptop for work purposes might not be a good idea.

    From Yoga to Xps??

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 02:57 AM PST

Hi, I am in sw development. Full stack develop but I m looking for unity and stuff. I currently have this yoga c930. Up to now I had minor problems with it but I managed to solve them and now it works perfectly. Recently I received this offer: swapping my yoga with a dell xps 15. Here the configs:

Yoga c930: i7 8550u, 16 gb ddr4 ram, 512 gb ssd, 4k touch panel with dolby vision and dolby atmos. 4 pcie lanes

Xps 9560: i7 7700hq, 16 gb ram, 512 gb ssd, 4k touch panel, NVIDIA GTX 1050,2 pcie lanes.

Pro for the yoga: better cpu, good sound and video quality ( I am also into Photoshop), lighter, 4 pcie lanes for an external graphic card Cons: no dedicated graphic card

Pro xps: dedicated graphic card, Better display ( both adobe rgs and srgb) Cons: awful speakers, some qc problems and heat dissipation problems (thermal limitations), 2 pcie express, coil whine effect

What should I do? Currently I m not using the touch/touchpen capability. I dont know the xps "market value" but I ve found many for under 1300€. My yoga can just be found as new for almost 2k€. Help me with this dilemma.

    Laptop for work

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 02:54 AM PST

Hello, I need to buy a laptop for work. The laptop doesn't need to have anything special, it just needs to be able to run normal Windows programs, MS Office programs and have a reasonable amount of storage space for saving videos and images related to my work. I was looking at the HP 15-DAO301TU. Any advice? Thanks!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Decently important, but it's ok if it's a little bit heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 inches

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Maybe wizard101, but that can run on a potato.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good Cpu, 500+ gigabytes of storage, decent RAM.

(X-post from PCMR) Quitting gaming and looking for a productivity laptop under 700

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 09:10 PM PST

I realized that gaming has been getting in the way of things, way into things, so I'm cutting the cord now before things get worse. (Addiction is real, guys, and I'm looking to change!) So with the money I get for selling my PC and then some, I'll have 700 for a new laptop. A productivity laptop for when I'm heading to college. Any recommendations you guys have for me?

I need a PC with at least 8GB of RAM or anything that's customer configurable, and I need some wicked battery life yet no real compromises in performance. I also need a great keyboard, because that's what I'll be mostly using it for. No gaming GPUs, please!

I would love it if it was also touchscreen or 2-in-1, but those aren't imperative. Portability, in general though, matters to me plenty.

Does such a laptop exist at all? I don't mind any used options either. Thanks guys!

    EDIT: US

    ryzen 5, i5 serie u o i5 serie h? I'm so cofused

    Posted: 15 Feb 2019 12:16 AM PST

    Hi guys,
I need to buy a laptop, I'm completely confused, but based on my budget I think I can choose between:

    • ryzen 5 vega 8
    • i5 8xxxU mx150 (or 130 I do not remember well)
    • i5 8300H 1050 smooth

I would like to buy the best laptop that gives me the right compromise as:

    • portability (I do not claim 10h of battery, of course I need 4-5)
    • gaming (720 is enough)
    • work (creative)

seeing the various videos and comparative tables, it seems that the two i5s are equivalent and this upsets me because if they were identical in performance, I would obviously go towards the U version that heats up less.
I thank you for all your advice in advance

Laptop for Architecture work- USA, budget ~$1,100

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 11:04 PM PST

Hey all, have a good friend who's laptop is failing her & needs to be replaced. I'm knowledgable but not an expert so want a few extra opinions, especially if you have experience with Architecture or engineering work which she does.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~1,100 max, to leave some cash to buy external drive or 2. Buying in the USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not sure what a 2 in 1 form factor is, didn't see it in sidebar but strong spec is the most important for making work faster.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? She is a small person so weight is a consideration, but larger like a 15" or 17" & thick isn't bad if it's not really heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" is nice but not mandatory.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. AutoCAD/Revit/Photoshop for Architecture work. These programs are going to be the large majority of her work & use, hours every day and they are the priority for the machine. Also light streaming of netflix & some word processing but not too much else.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Durability is a big consideration as this laptop will go from home to studio to class and home again every day. At least one USB type C (I think it's the lightning?) Is wanted, along with USB 3 and HDMI. An SSD is preferred but will also be using external drives so not strictly needed. Extras like touchscreen/UHD/sound stuff is not needed.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As stated this is going to be a work laptop for an Architect, and hopefully will be able to last years of CAD, Revit, and photoshop. She does lots of 3d work in CAD & Revit and she does a decent amount of image rendering but little if any video rendering. My initial thoughts go to a Lenovo ThinkPad and the sidebar quick picks said they're good, but there's 3 contenders in the same range- the 480s, the Carbon X1 and the P52- the P52 has the power but seemingly less RAM? Also P52 is at or slightly above budget. The Carbon is nice weight & size wise but not quite as powerful as P52 and still pricey. 480s seems like it may lack in power a bit but is more price friendly- maybe up-optioned it's best? Really not sure which would give best results. If theres another brand or model that's better than ThinkPad I'm all ears too.

    Budget Gaming Laptop suggestion

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 06:48 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$800
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money but thermals take priority over specs.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important. I would like it to be able to fit in a 15" back pack though.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. WoW, Classic WoW, WCIII Reforged, BFV, BF1, Witcher 3, AC: Origins, Skyrim (lightly modded), Kingdom Come: Deliverance
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium settings - 60fps @ 1080p - with an emphasis on keeping thermals below 90c w/o having to repaste.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? back lit keyboard would be nice, no plastic chassis like the G3.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I can't emphasize enough on thermals. I am tired of getting units that hit 100c on CPUs while gaming. They are gaming laptops even if they're budget gaming laptops, they need to run efficiently without having to make all kinds of adjustments. The most I would be willing to perform is an under volt and provide a cooling pad (which I believe is reasonable). I might even consider turning down the multiplier on the CPU if I had to. But I am not interested in re-pasting and figuring out how to override fan controls, etc...
      • I would like to ask if you think sRGB and nit is important in displays for gaming. I've always wondered this. I know that typical budget laptops use about 60% sRGB but I heard that 80% is the sweet spot. I might consider getting a lesser component if it meant getting a better display, but I don't know what is more important in that regard.

Thank you for your time. I appreciate what you guys do here. =)

I don't really have a budget so I'll take any suggestion, but maybe starting around $1,500. No idea if that's more than I'd need or not enough.

    Need a laptop for programming

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 06:03 PM PST

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

    600 USD

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

2 in 1 would be nice, but is not necessary. Good battery life is a must, I don't want to be tethered to a wall.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

The lighter the better, I would be carrying the laptop around with me most of the time, but it isn't a deal breaker

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I'd want it to be able to run adobe Photoshop, for some light photoshoping on the go, anything big would be handled on my main computer, so this isn't that important

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    N/A

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I will be doing a lot of typing so i would like a pretty decent keyboard, doesn't have to have high storage capacity (at least 500gb, preferably 1tb) but a ssd for quick boot up is a must (if possible a m.2 slot would be nice) A textured touchpad is a must

Don't know what to get! :(

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 09:25 PM PST

So I'm looking for a budget laptop capable of running some light games, the likes of minecraft, league of legends etc, at REASONABLE fps at med-high settings. I play most of my games on consoles anyways, and will use the laptop for mainly browsing/studying if I'm not playing on it. My budget is around the 400-550$ range but if going to up to 600$ is necessary I can do that (but come on there has to be something.)
I'm very interested in the ASUS Vivobook F510UA as it seems very light and thin and that's also something I would like but isn't a MUST. I've read up on it and have heard installing a 128GB ssd can make this guy quite a powerhouse for the price. Would this laptop meet my requirements? If not is there anything in my price range that would?

    Mac Pro 2016 15' or Pro 2018 13' ?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 02:13 PM PST

Hi. I am going to be a college student, and am having trouble deciding between the two.

They will be the base model of each - 2.6ghz i7 for 2016; 2.3ghz i5 for 2018. I will get either one second hand, but they will have a battery count under 100 for 2016, while 2018 will be under 10.

My main use will be to read books, research, and write essays. My main reason for considering the 15 inch model is because I am using a 2011 Mac Pro 13 inch right now, and I found it is a little 'crowded' when I am having multiple windows for research, and switching back and forth. Both are the same price.

    Thank you for your time.

EDIT: Another option is a 2018 Mac Pro 13' with 65 battery cycles, but has 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage.

The last is a 2016 Mac Pro 15' with 315 battery cycles, but is the top of the line model, with 2.9GHz, QC i7, 512gb

The number 1 laptop that I have been looking at is the Razerblade 15, 1060 Max-Q, 256gb ssd and 2TB HD for $1799.99. I'm looking for something around the same price, same build quality. If you can suggest something around the same price with better specifications for the money that'd be great, otherwise it looks like the Razerblade 15 will be the choice. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your suggestions.

Edit: I would like at least a 1060 gpu

    Help choosing a laptop

    Posted: 14 Feb 2019 04:18 PM PST

So I've redeemed $250 of Amazon Gift Cards so I could buy a new laptop. But I'm stuck trying to choose which one to buy; I am also buying a $13.99 laptop case/bag with it for protection. Appreciation if anyone can help find a cheaper/better laptop than my choices.

I am stuck on which one is better for playing games like ROBLOX on High or Medium:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: In United States with a budget of ~700$ USD(if the price is under 1000$, I could probably afford it. 700$ is just an idea for price.* Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Longer battery life preferred, not neccesary* How important is weight and thinness to you? not very important* Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, * Windows, only option * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. between 12 and 18 inches* Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Wish to run Rimworld(With mods), Faster than Light, League of Legends, and Prison Architect (With mods)* If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Higher quality settings, >40fps * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? nothing fancy, just want long lasting keys/ports * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Skype/Discord will most likely be used concurrent to games, If you could please link or name a complete laptop I could buy instead of build/assemble would be much appreciated. Talking specs/'technicalities with me is entirely pointless, I require dumb words to comprehend what you say. Thank you, have a nice day/night.

I like windows* Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. n/a * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. yes* If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? stuff like league of legends not heavy games * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? ssd is a must, I'd like an 8th gen Intel CPU * *Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the laptop ** I have to directly connect to switches and routers and telnet and ssh into them so a variety of ports would be nice but there are always adapters, USB c would be nice too, thanks!
