Too many options, could someone help me narrow down the best laptop for specs I'm looking for?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 10:12 AM PST

I'm looking for a laptop with either a 1050/1060 or 2050/2060 gtx, with an SSD. I'm not looking for a super beefy 2500$ gaming laptop, I'm wondering what my most affordable options are.

    Thanks!

    Huawei versus Dell

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 12:30 PM PST

OK. I am eyeing both the newest matebook x pro that is to come out, and the latest Dell XPS 13.

Which is the best for: Student life (hw, documents, media) Perhaps gaming? (if I were to invest in an egpu with an RX 580 8gb inside) Using Linux mint with programs like kdenlive, etc.

    GPU vs. RAM/SSD tradeoff question

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 11:29 AM PST

I have the ability to buy two different laptops, and I can't decide which I should get. I'm not a laptop whiz, so I figured I'd come to the experts for help.

One has 32GB of RAM, 2TB SSD, and a 1060 GPU.

    The other has 16GB of RAM, a 128SSD+ 1TB HD, and a 2060 GPU.

I'm not a huge gamer, but I do a lot of data analytics work with some pretty large datasets. Which laptop would you suggest (if any)?

    Thanks so much!

    Laptop upgrade help

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:36 PM PST

Hi. Im currently looking options to upgrade my laptop ( 2016 Dell XPS 13" ). I'm working as a freelance designer & web developer, so I use lots of Adobe Suite programs and some coding ones. I'm constantly having meetings with clients, and as I don't have a stablished office I find myself carrying it arround quite often. Taking all of this into consideration, I'm interested in a laptop which has a more simpler design, light to carry arround and powerful enough to be able to have 4 adobe suite programs along with several browser windows open with little to no problem. As a hobby I play Overwatch every once in a while which is why I was considering a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Since I don't plan to upgrade in 4 or 5 more years I wan't something that'll be powerfull enough to last through it without too many problems.

    My options are as follows

    Razer Blade 15 1070 MaxQ (16gb ram 512ssd 8th gen i7)
    MacBook Pro 15 (16GB ram and 256SSD, 8th gen i5)

    Dell XPS 15 1050Ti (16 gb, 512ssd 8th gen i7)

Now the reason I'm going towards the razer is for that beautiful GPU which would come in handy for video editing, some very large illustrator files and my breaks playing overwatch.

The macbook and it's trackpad would do wonders for my workflow, since I really never go out of my place with a mouse I'm ending up using the trackpad almost all day, and as I'm familiar with both macbook and dell trackpads I really don't like at all the xps one, whereas the macbook pro is huge and so intuitive and smooth (i would have to say good bye to gaming though) before getting my current dell laptop i was using a 2015 macbook pro and it was really really good for content creation and it never gave me problems.

Lastly the dell xps 15 is the better value for the money, BUT THAT TRACKPAD, it really sucks, and I know they've improved it over time but comparing it with the apple one really makes me question the choice. Also, since i would be upgrading from a previous dell laptop, I don't think I would feel that anything has changed, aside from performance.

Has anyone tried the Razer trackpad and compared it with the macbook pro one who can give me some insight as how well it works?

I would love to hear your thoughts on the three of them, your experiences and reasons as to why you prefer either of them. Also, if you think there's another option within the price range which can give the same value in design and performance I would be happy to look into them as well!!
    Thank you!

Where can I get Razer Blade 15 2018, 1070 maxQ?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:28 PM PST

Hey guys! I'm trying to buy a new laptop and I was thinking of buying a Razer Blade 15, but after some research I think the new RTX models are not worth it, so I thought a good option would be the Razer Blade 15 (2018) 1070 MaxQ 16GB and 512GB SSD. Do you guys know where can I buy it? I can't find it!

    Thanks!

I’m about to buy a gaming laptop. But

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:52 AM PST

I'm thinking of buying the MSI GS65 or the GIGABYTE AERO 15X. I'm gonna be using it for editing videos as well as moderate gaming.

But since newer laptops are about to come. Should I wait a bit more? Like months? So that they may cost a little less or maybe even buy cheap 2019 gaming laptops like lenovo y740?

Or should I definitely go for it now?

I'm targeting 1070-2060 gpu, and have a budget around 1800-2000usd. But then I'm buying it here in the Philippines so gpu costs a lot more.

Loading usb type c through a hub?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:20 AM PST

Hey Guys! I am planning to buy a Huawei MateBook D with Ryzen 5 2500U for light video-editing on the go and to set up a work/multimedia-station at home.
Now my Question is whether i can put a USB-Hub on its USB-C Port which also serves as the loading port and load it through the hub. I dont know if my question became very clear, so i will try to explain it a bit better:
Step 1: Put a USB-Hub on the USB-C Port of the Laptop.
Step 2: Connect the USB-Hub with the Power Supply for the Laptop

Step 3: Have more USB-Slots with the benefits of the USB-C´s capability

    Step 4: Profit?

I dont know if that might even be a dumb question, but i am not much of an Expert, so please forgive me if that is the case^^
    Hope you Guys can help^^

Best Gaming Laptops of 2019 to Buy in UK

Gaming laptop? or barebones? where to begin?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:09 AM PST

Looking for reddits help on building a gaming laptop, i have three desktops - 2 skylake PC's on AIO and a skylake x - i've sold all my DDR3 machines. In the past i've had experience installing ekwb w/ sli blocks and monoblocks, i've acquired gsync panels, PLS and a LG OLED. Admittedly i know almost nothing about laptop hardware.

i have a mini laptop with ubuntu on it i never use, but sometimes i see people post their games from alienware laptops. This has me intrigued, i've seen eGPU setups but i'm fascinated by "barebones" laptops that are upgraded, usually i see builders on ebay offering all kinda of upgrades as if they can install discrete gpus somehow, i am interested in something that can do 1080p around 3-4 TFLOPS, nothing spectacular. Mostly i would like to manage orders on EVE online or play apex when i'm traveling.

With that in mind i'm thinking a late 700 series or 900 series nvidia mobile gpu, but where can i find information on this? i've tried searching other threads and google but i get years old information on older models and pretty messy threads blasting OP for not choosing a desktop. Are these laptop gpus locked vendor to vendor?

can anyone point me in the direction of the right resource? help would be greatly appreciated

Dell G5 BIOS Version and Audio.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:08 AM PST

Hello there,i juts bought a Dell G5 a couple of days ago, preinstalled with a BIOS version of 1.5.0, the fans kick in pretty late, i benched mark with cinebench R15 and the processor hit 95C and the fans quite abit to start, i have the options to update it to 1.6.1, 1.8.0, and 1.9.0. Which one should i upgrade to ?

I tried undervolting, with XTU, and everytime i restart, it just returns back to normal.

Another Question, concerning Audio, i had the latest realtek drivers installed, the sound was okay, but the microphone was too low, uninstalled the drivers, the sound is meh, and the mic is good. Is there any appropriate audio drivers to install for it ?
PS: i have a windows 10 pro 1803. WavessMax audio isn't supported for me in the store.

    Any advice ?

    Thanks in advance :)

Repurposing surface pro with frozen screen (6 vertical lines) to desktop help

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:19 PM PST

Long story short, came home from school took my laptop out and the screen was black with 6 vertical white lines. Did some research and figured out it can't be fixed and I am out of warranty period. SO the computer is running like a champ (sans the screen) and I was wondering if I could turn it into a desktop using a monitor, keyboard, and mouse? What else would I need so it wasn't a pain to use it every-time? Is this a waste of time?

    Laptop recommendation

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:06 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800$, Romania (I might be able to push for 1000$)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I am looking for a laptop that has a battery that could last for more than 5h, 4-core processor, 8 ram, ssd and the most important thing, a bright and color accurate display. As for the 2 in 1, I am indiffenret and long as it meets the requirements (which I hope aren't too many requirements to fit the budget)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It isn't, but as it is not a gaming laptop I would expect not to be a monster like Predator 21x^^.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size?

15 would be great, but I'm open to any size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Adobe (often - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; rarely Premiere Pro, After effects)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't think I will play games on the laptop. At most Dota 2 or overwatch in case of a LAN party (once in a year)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A sturdy keyboard would be great with a backlit or illumination and a precise trackpad. I don't fancy in particular touch screen or finger-print reader, nor would I use a optical drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I like the very much the Legion y530 and its keyboard design is spacious and backlited, but I want something with a better battery life. Dell XPS 15 is lovely, but is too expensive and I not looking for a 4k.

    ThinkPad T480 for engineering?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:02 AM PST

    Hello everyone.

I will be attending college for mechanical engineering soon, and I need a long battery and durable laptop.

I stumbled upon a new T480 with i5, 1080p, 8 GB ram (I will upgrade to 16gb) and intel UHD 620 (yes I am willing to sacrifice graphics, and mx150 is too expensive) and 1tb HDD (I might switch out for 500gb SSD). I would be able to get it for around $600.

Is this a good buy for 4 years of college, will it be powerful and portable enough?

Pls give your opinion on this laptop for an engineering student.

    Thank you!

    HP DM4-3002sa Memory question

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:55 AM PST

Product: HP DM4-3002sa Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

    Hi,

I have had a HP DM4-3002sa Pavilion laptop for quite a few years now and have always believed that the maximum memory for this system was 8GB DDR3 ram.

I have recently seen conflicting reports from other sites which state theis will actually take upto 16GB DDR3 RAM.

Does anyone know which is correct as If it will take 16GB it will be worth the upgrade.

HP support assistant states the product number as follows :A8J22EA#ABU

EDIT - It does have the installed 6GB total ram at the moment - 4GB+2GB SODIMM

Thunderbolt 3 Dock w/ Three Displays?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:22 PM PST

Picked up a Zephyrus GX501 (8750H, 1080 Max-Q, etc) for a pretty low price the other day and for the most part I'm pretty happy with it. That said, it's pretty lacking in the ports department. I have three monitors that I want to drive using a TB3 dock. Main display is an Acer X34 (3440x1440 100hz) and the other two are just auxiliary 1080p 60hz displays.

I've tried this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZPV8DF but it can't do all three monitors. Actually, I can't even get it to do two of them. Drives the X34 just fine, but the other two don't turn on no matter which cables or adapters I use.

Tried this as well, no cig. Runs the two 1080p monitors but the X34 gets zilch (technically it's not even a TB3 dock so it was a long shot): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CMKLNMN

Anyone have experience getting a TB3 dock to drive multiple displays? Preferably more than two?
