    GTX 1060, 1070, RTX 2060

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:03 PM PST

I was waiting until the release of RTX laptops before getting my first gaming laptop, and I was just wondering what the best option would be. I really want to get one now (budget around $1200), but I am able to wait maybe until the end of March. Would it be best to wait for a further price drop in the 1070, just get a 1060 now, or wait for the cheap lenovo RTX laptop?

If it helps, the laptops I'm considering right now are the Lenovo Legion Y7000 (1060 for 1099), OP 15+ (1060 for 800), Lenovo Legion Y540 (RTX 2060 for 930 but comes out in May), the MSI Leopard (1070 for 1300).

Any other laptop recommendations would be good, I'm mainly looking for an i7-8750H, and at least 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD.

LG Gram 17 - CPU Throttling when on certain USB-C charger

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:42 AM PST

I recently purchased an LG Gram 17 laptop. Overall, the laptop is excellent. However, I have a curious issue I wonder if anyone with a USB-C charging capable laptop has come across.

When I plug in a particular USB-C charger, that is apparently rated at 60W (also w/ 3 USB-A type ports), the CPU slows down tremendously, even when set to Best Performance. The Task Manager maxes out at ~0.50Ghz. The system is too slow for anything other than casual browsing. The charger charges the laptop well.

I even tested the CPU with PassMark. When on this particular charger, it tested at 1428 CPU Mark. Off the charger, it tested at 7265 CPU Mark. On another USB-C charger, it tested at ~8900 CPU Mark. The USB-A ports were unused while testing.

I've played around with the settings a bit, but cannot find anything that would work around this issue. Is there any software that would indicate what voltage the port is drawing? Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone have experience using both Mac and PC together?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:07 AM PST

So I recently built a PC and everything I need to do I can do with it. Before I was using just an old Dell Inspiron laptop from 2009 or something so this was a huge upgrade. The one thing I do miss about having a laptop is just being able to sit on my couch on my living room with a show in the background doing work (through google sheets, docs, slides), browsing YouTube/Reddit, or using Adobe Audition for editing audio files.

I was looking into purchasing a new laptop and have just loved the design and supposed durability of the MacBook Pro line. I've never had one, but I've recently started using the MacOS at my work (I'm a middle school teacher) and I enjoy the simplicity for apps like google suite and such.

Is it common for people to use a PC as a main desktop computer (gaming, video/audio editing) and then use a MacBook Pro for work and leisure use? Aesthetically I would love to make the MacBook Pro purchase, but I wanted to see if people had any negative experiences when going back and forth from Windows 10 to MacOS daily?

Any insight to your experiences would be great! Thanks!

RTX 2060 + Long Battery Life

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:18 PM PST

I am looking for an RTX 2060 laptop that has a very long battery life (similar to the AERO15X). I like the Aero15x...but the webcam and keyboard are a little bothersome.

I'm considering the MSI GStealth RTX 2060 (if we could get some benchmarks) since it has a good keyboard, battery life, and nice aesthetics (not too gamery, but I would prefer even less than it's current state)

Alienware M15..I just don't like the cover or how it looks to be honest. I'd consider the Dell G7 (if I can get it at 90W and if it has Optimus).

If only Gigabyte listened and changed the Aero 15x...get rid of the numpad...fix the keyboard (center it), increase travel, fix webcam and this is easily one of the best laptops out there.

Acer Swift 5 Pros and Cons Review: is it Worth Spending $900?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:53 PM PST

Looking for a new laptop and looking for Recommendations

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:53 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is lower the better than can do what I want to do, but I rather not spend more than ~ 800$ CAD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My goal in changing is to have something a bit thinner if possible and lightweight from my defunct MSI GT70. Laptop gaming is not required anymore.

One thing I would like to have is the laptop to have a SSD come with it and place to fit a second 2.5inch drive that way I could get my 500GB drive from my laptop right now onto it and have enough space and quick boot.

I also need something that can last a good 2-3 hours preferably as I need battery when I have it in the car for troubleshooting.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it's less heavy than what I have right now. I think it's rated at 9lbs my MSI GT70.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would like at least 15 inch with 1080p resolution

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would like it to run video streaming stuff like Netflix or web browsing. Also need to run my BMW software which I don't think is that resource intensive. The official specs for that are as follows:

The processor is at least a 2.2 GHz dual-core processor. At least 4 GB of main memory At least 250 GB of free disk space on drive C: A screen resolution of at least 1280x1024 At least USB 2.0

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If I can run games like golf with friend or minecraft I'm happy but don't expect really to run games nicely on a integrated GPU.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not not really.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -I NEED at least a USB 2.0 port, preferably on the left side.

RTX 2080 Max-Q vs Desktop RTX 2060 (Userbenchmark)

So I've been thinking about getting the RTX 2070/2080 MQ...but after seeing this I wonder if it makes sense to just get a 2060/2070 Desktop and a decent laptop for around the same price. Thoughts?

Missing pad under my laptop, help !

Thoughts on Lenovo s730 for someone who wants XPS 13 but on a budget..?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:36 AM PST

Hey all. I'm looking to get a new machine and have set the XPS 13 i5 as my "ideal if I had all the money" machine. I've seen Lenovo have released the s730 with a very similar build, ports and internals. The only thing that differs from the XPS is the lack of touchscreen option. Coming from a touchscreen laptop is a bit annoying because I often use the screen for zooming and scrolling but the difference in price is upwards of £400. It even has the same 4 lane thunderbolt so it could even even be used as a little gaming machine with an eGPU in the future.

Has anyone done more research on this machine or have any negatives of it? Reviews seem to be overall positive except battery life and the plastic build but interested to hear your thoughts.

Difference between hp spectre x360 models

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:28 AM PST

Hi, im looking for a new laptop and im thinking the hp spectre x360. However when i go on their online store, there seems to be 4 different product names for the same laptop with the same specs but different prices. Theres the 15t touch, 15t touch plus, 15t touch performance and the 15-ch012nr. All of which are the 15 inch model and can be configured with the same specs.

From looking at the specs, should i just get the cheapest one or would that be an old model missing some useful features such as dual thunderbolt 3 4lanes or a fingerprint sensor.

    Thanks

would you ever recommend this laptop?: acer e5-476G (mX130 variants)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:55 AM PST

im currently using this laptop (more specifically, the i5-7200U/MX130/4GB RAM/1TB HDD variant) and im curious just how it holds up. tbh, i really think it was a mistake to purchase this one because it holds an mx130 gpu, which is pretty much a renamed 940mx (a fact that i didnt know when getting it). its a huge turnoff because this gpu is just not enough for anything heavy in 2019. however it works perfect for everyday use, lowend+esports gaming, and basic programming. thing is, idk if the price is worth it for those.

id like to hear other people's thoughts on this model. how does it compare to other laptops in the same price point?

    QUESTION ABOUT SODIMM RAM

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:16 PM PST

I'm buying a second 8gb stick for my laptop.

These two SODIMM sticks seem to have virtually identical specs (with the exception of the MT/s speed), yet they're priced pretty differently on Amazon. Is there any significant difference between these two (aside from the MT/s speed)?

Part number Part description Price point Amazon link
    CT8G4SFD824A Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory $49.99 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019FREJOQ
    CT8G4SFD8213 Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2133 MT/s (PC4-17000) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory $68.00 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015HQ9TGW

It seems weird that chip with a faster transfer rate is cheaper.

The one 8gb stick that's already in my laptop is a 2133 MT/s, but I read on some website that I can put a 2400 MT/s stick in the other slot and it will run fine. Is this correct?

I'm sorry for the all-caps title. I just really cannot stand that this subreddit forces the first letter of every word in the title to be capitalized.

Asus ROG G703GI or Clevo P870DM2 Chassis

My brand new X1 extreme is getting low-ish frame rates without full utilization

My brand new X1 extreme is getting low-ish frame rates without full utilization

Note before reading: I use sarcasm in my writing, but this post is actually serious and I really want to fix this issue.

Computer specs are the i5, 8gb ram, and 1050 ti. My problem is I have the frame rate on a game like fortnite set to 120, and my computer is giving me a sweaty 100 frames (and like every time I get into a fight I get like 40-60 for a bit... so annoying). As you can see from the picture below, none of my CPU, or GPU use percentages are that high (never passing 80%), even though the game isn't reaching the desired 120FPS frame rate (almost always lower), and it gets lag spikes when I look at anything somewhat complicated, like another person. With my RAM (not the ranch), there are a bunch of garbage processes running in the background, but I don't think that matters too much as memory usage never goes above 90%. How do I get my lazy sack of metal to give 90-100% so it can get solid frames and lack of lag spikes? Any insight to why the utilization is low/fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Other info: The reason I bought this computer was because I had an old gaming computer I bought from a 3rd party company which broke -- the motherboard ran hotter than a charcoal grill and to replace it would be $800 (still paid for the diagnostic lol). On my new x1 extreme, I want to be able to have what appears to be a steady 60-90 fps on a game like fortnite. I have 16gb ram and an i7 on my other computer which I might want to replace out (I have no idea how this works, so in the seemingly impossible case you think I have a bottle neck and I should do this, please provide info on how/where I can learn)

I looked in the NVIDIA control panel, and no, I'm not someone's grandma who doesn't know they're using integrated graphics. I also changed my power settings to performance, and messed around with regedit with no helpful results. Once again, computer specs are the i5, 8gb ram, and 1050 ti. Thanks so much for your help.

Is this refurb laptop a good buy?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:30 PM PST

I need something for University this year. I'm studying teaching. I do not need it for gaming or multimedia, just lots of word processing and browsing.

I knew nothing about computers But I did lots of research into good stuff like SSDs as the laptops I've purchased before end up failing on me after 18 months and I'm over it!

So because funds are limited this time I went the refurbished route, and found this at a price I can afford. What do you think?

Note - price is $485 AUS, so about $350 US

Looking for a laptop £500 or less capable of adequately running League of Legends

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:26 AM PST

My current laptop runs on Radeon R5 graphics and it sucks, fps lag is constant and i cant play the game. League is the most demanding game I play and I dont play enough to warrant a dedicated gaming laptop costing upwards of £700. I've been told that Intel i5/i7 is adequate for LoL but ive no clue about the technical side of laptops/computers. I currently only get between 02-35 FPS at all times when I play, I was hoping to get closer to 60+ if possible.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
