Is guest mode on Unifi AC access points enough for IoT and guest isolation away from my home network?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:51 PM PST

Basically. I've set up an Edge Router Lite.

I have a Unifi AC AP and a few cheap VLAN supported switches.

I've created 2 VLANS and assigned them to their own access point. With guest mode disabled these access points can see my LAN devices. With guest mode enabled they cannot.

However should I be using the edgerouter to set rules to drop any packets across the VLANS or is guest mode adequate? Bear in mind i'm only interested in wireless devices, I have nothing wired that i'm bothered about LAN access.

    Thanks :)

Using apt. patch panel drops my gigabit ethernet speed to 100M (Google Fiber ISP)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:40 PM PST

So I just moved into a new place with had Google Fiber available. I setup the account online, got the "Network Box" they give you (which is like a router) and first plugged it in directly into the "FiberJack" and presto I'm getting a lovely 1Gbps connection via ethernet off the network box/router thing.

But since I can't setup my desktop in my closet... I tested and figure out which wires in the patch panel go to which wall jacks in the apartment; which has 4 keystone wall jacks and cat5e wiring throughout. I noticed that the keystone jacks on the wall are punched down in the TIA-568A way, which is odd, but I guess as long as all the jacks are the same it should be fine I think (no?)...

So I have this patch panel and the grey wire you see in the foreground going towards the camera is coming from the FiberJack. When I connect that wire to any port on the patch panel and hook up the Network box at the wall jack, the LAN speed is just 100M... what gives? Is the wiring bad? Should I redo all keystone connections to TIA-568B ? I'm not sure what to do to get 1Gbps LAN...

Tired of renting a modem from my ISP. Ready to purchase my own. Need Router recommendations

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:35 PM PST

I already know to look for a modem only device, and to buy the router separately. I'm looking at getting the Arris Surfboard SB6183 modem. As for the router, that's where I need suggestions.

I live alone in a 525 sq. ft. apartment. I use the following:

    • Desktop
    • Chromebook
    • Phone
    • Google Homes
    • Wemo light switches
    • Harmony Hub
    • Chromecast/Apple TV/Fire TV/Roku

I'm not a gamer. I mainly just need reliable speeds for streaming things like Emby, YouTube TV, Netflix, MLB, etc...

Expensive routers like the Nighthawk series or even mesh routers seem like overkill for my relatively small place and simple needs. I just want something that works without needing constant refreshing.

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions. I went with the TP-Link AC1750 C7.

    4.Guest Vlan

How should I set this up to allow guests to Plex media to Chromecasts m

    5. Children's Vlan

I would like to restrict what they have access to online. What would be the best way to do this?

Question about bandwidth speeds and router.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:18 PM PST

Not sure how to word this and it might sound silly, but here goes.

I'm trying to figure out what internet package is best. We've been on a special bundle price at 150Mbps but we're now looking at dropping the cable completely and also wondering if we can drop to a lower package.

From the modem I can get those speeds but from the router (Cisco E1550) it gets around 50Mbps. Since we've been fine with the router only allowing 50Mbps I'm trying to figure out if that means we'd be okay on a package that only gives that amount. There are three people and at points during the day we're all streaming something, usually a mix of DirecTV Now, YouTube, Twitch, Netflix, and/or Plex (though it's within the network so wouldn't think internet bandwidth is used).

The reason I'm unsure if a 50Mbps package would be fine is because I'm not sure if we're still benefiting from the modem sending out 150Mbps. Like, if it can only reach speeds of 50Mbps but it's the "extra" bandwidth that allows us all to stream without issue?

Question about which (third-party) Router I should get for Verizon (no Ethernet used)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:12 PM PST

    Hi guys!

So I have just upgraded my Verizon Internet plan to a Gigabit connection, aka about 900Mbps, from 100Mbps, and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestion on a good third-party router.

My family streams a lot, such as Netflix, and we have many devices used at the same time.

My sister and I, on top of that, are also avid gamers, and low ping/latency/packet loss is of course HIGHLY preferred. I play a LOT of League of Legends, and I get constant ping-spikes which REALLY messes up my gameplay, and includes problems such as rubberbanding.

Also, we do NOT use Ethernet at all, except for the devices right next to the router, such as the Xbox (and I think that's the only device connected through Ethernet anyway).

Anyway, do you guys have any recommendations on a good router we could buy? I had researched gaming routers on Amazon a bit, but I'm pretty sure that those are just cash-grabs because of the popularity and shape of the router or something. Price is not an issue. I'd gladly spend hundreds if it means I get a really good quality router with absolutely no issues such as connectivity loss etc.

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Just wanted to add, the router will be on the MIDDLE FLOOR. My room is upstairs, others are downstairs (above and below the Router room).

    Strange ethernet problem

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:51 PM PST

I've used the same TP-Link powerline adapter and the ethernet cables that came with it for the past 3 years or so and have never run into any issues until recently. Lately my download and upload speeds have been really bad compared to usual and I noticed that when I opened the Local Area Connection status it said "Speed: 10 Mbps" when it used to be 1 Gbps. I have a usb to gigabit ethernet adapter that I used for my Nintendo Switch that I tried to connect to my PC and the Speed says 1.0 gbps for that and my download speed and upload speed seems normal when i'm connected through that.

Could the ethernet port on my motherboard be causing the 10 mbps speed when it used to give me up to 1.0 gbps? I've tried different cables and every time I connect directly into my computer's LAN it makes my connection a lot worse than it used to be. I just noticed this within the past week or so.

    Slow Wifi

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:28 PM PST

I've been having issues with internet recently. I have a spectrum modem plugged into a google wifi system. Most of the time I get around 300mbps down but recently it has been less than 10. I've tried restarting the modem and router but nothing seems to be working. This started a few days ago and I have since upgraded my cat 5 ethernet cables to cat 6 which helped a bit. I either have no internet connection or slow and unreliable connection. I can't play any online games due to the ping being crazy and getting an connection interrupted every minute. Any tips to help.

    Thanks

Can i create an ssh tunnel to my old house?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:44 AM PST

Im moving to a new apartment that will have other roommates (i dont know them well so i want to play safe on my browsing) we have a private wi-fi router with password that we (the guys that are living in the apartment) can access. So how can i protect my browsing (ie. intercept requests) from someoner that have the access to the router internet too? After some search, i found a guy that said "I'd just set up an ssh tunnel to my home network and proxy everything over that." is this possible? How can that be done? (beacause on my "main" house, the router & internet is safe..)

Firewall Router and Multiple APs or wireless router?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 06:11 PM PST

My Asus RT-N66U wireless router just died. I cannot even restore it with the Asus Restoration Tools. So it got me thinking of what is a better set up. Using a firewall router like pfSense and a couple of wireless APs wired back to the router, or get a wireless router like the Synology RT2600ac?

Unify AC lite first timer having issues.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:48 PM PST

    Hello,

I am having trouble setting up my unifi AC lite that I just got.

I am using the poe injector that came with the AP. I have a 100ft cat6 cable connected to the AP and the POE port of the injector. From the LAN port of the injector I have it connected to eth2 on my edgerouter x.

Before installing the unifi controller the AP will stay solid white. I had it powered on for 55 minutes before installing the controller software (it showed 55 minutes in the uptime field). As soon as I configure the device with the controller it gets set into a boot loop.

On the device itself, the LEDs go through this cycle.

    1. Flashing White

    2. Solid Blue (for about 3-5 seconds, when it is solid blue my phone detects the network and will connect to it)

    3. No LED at all for a few seconds.

    4. Solid white

Then the process repeats. On the controller software it shows "connected" and has an orange triangle warning signal (the warning signal isn't always there but it always says connected) I have tried resetting the AP by using the physical reset button. When I did this the boot loop stopped but as soon as I configured it with the controller software the same process repeated.

    TP-Link EAP225 V3 PoE issue

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:15 PM PST

I just bought and received an EAP225 V3 today and it doesn't power on using my Crestron Cen-Poe-5 but it will work with the included PoE injector. I have a second EAP225 V2 that has always worked with it and unplugging it doesn't make the V3 work.

I see 802.3af across the board for all devices so do I have a bad unit or is there something I'm missing? I should mention no lights come on at all when plugged into the Cen-Poe-5. No link or anthing.

    Help - Maximize Current Location

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:40 PM PST

Hi everyone, I am new to home networking (obviously) and have found myself in an interesting situation that I would like your assistance on.

I have moved into a 2 bedroom apartment (1,100~ sqft) with CenturyLink Fiber. "Plugged-In" speeds are in the 9xx down and 9xx up range which is to be expected. However, wireless is around the 200 (+/- 20) down and 500 (+/- 40) up range. I would like to increase this if possible!

Modem/Router: Actiontec C3000A (CenturyLink equipment, free)

I had originally purchased the Netgear Nighthawk AC2600 router but returned it because wireless speeds were nearly identical if not slightly worse (could have been user installation error?).

    Thanks in advance!

    PoE Injector Issues

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:05 PM PST

Hey all, my internet has been dropping multiple times a day over the course of months now. My router is not the issue. I called in to my ISP and was told my internet connection drops every 2h15min45s. The tech over the phone said it may be a faulty PoE injector. Does that sound right? I have point to point internet sent to my house.

I have my router plugged into the same outlet as the PoE Injector and the router has been proven to have continuous power and no drops in broadcasting the home network, so I know its not an issue with my electricity.

Is it possible that theres an issue with the Ethernet cable going from the PoE injector, out to the Antenna? TIA

router with per device bandwith QOS?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:38 PM PST

    Hello,
We have some rural cabins a use a Telus smart hub for internet (there name for a LTE router/hotspot)

some months we go over, ideally Id like to split the bandwidth cap amongst devices so one person doesn't screw over the rest, but most QoS options I see with routers limit speed but not bandwidth, unless I go with a expensive business class device.

is there something relatively affordable to do what I need?

Is there anything I should know when picking a cable for streaming / gaming?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:05 PM PST

I'm wiring a network cable through my wall for streaming / gaming. I have two cables: a blue, ticker one that I purchased myself. It says nothing on the cable, but the package says "high performance, 100% copper attending to the norm enforced by datacenters". I also have a white, thinner one that the internet provider left. I don't have the package, but it says on the wire: "SOHOPLUS U/UTP 24AWGX4P NBR 14703 --- ROHS COMPLIANT -- CMX 60 degrees C --- VERIFIED TO TIA-568-C.2 CATEGORY ANATEL 00036-08-00256 --- 31807071331 054m". I'm wondering which one is the best, or if it doesn't make a difference? Here is a picture of them.

Too many devices, not enough ethernet ports

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:04 AM PST

I live in rural Texas and use a small ISP that none of my friends have even heard of. The speeds are awful but to make the connection more consistent I started running cat5 cables to everything I use. My dad told me to do it for his computer in the office and the ps3 (which is used for Netflix and other streaming). I have everything but the office done, but I'm out of ports on my router to run more lines. I saw an adapter online that splits 1 cable into 2 but that makes it to where you can only have 1 line in use at a time. I've thought about a switch as well but I only will have 5 things connected via ethernet, so a switch seems overkill. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Default Gateway Changing by itself to "random" IP

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 12:35 PM PST

Hi all. I'm confused here. I just called my ISP to see if they're the ones doing this and from what the guy could tell the answer is "no".

Every now and then I'll run an ipconfig for the hell of it. I noticed today (2nd time this has happened) that my default gateway IP changed from 192.168.1.1 to something random (did not record it - but I believe it was 98.x.x.x).

Google has failed me. Am I being hijacked here? What's going on? Anyone ever see anything like this? Restarting the router & modem fixed the problem but it will come back eventually I just don't know when.

I initially ran the ipconfig because I noticed some sites would not load right away or at all. Ipconfig first showed nothing for the default gateway - then it showed that random 98.x.x.x address. Maybe my router is bad? I've already tried a factory reset. Thanks for reading!

Download speeds inconsistent through ethernet cable but fine wirelessly

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 11:36 AM PST

This problem has always been consistent whenever we have used any device through the ethernet. I just recently built a PC and I would prefer to use an ethernet so I can get the fastest speeds possible, obviously. I notice the drop in speed especially when I am playing multiplayer games. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has had issues similar to this and knows a solution.

Our internet provider is Xfinity and I have my ethernet cable plugged into the XB6 gateway. The ethernet cable is use a
50ft CAT7. We also also running on Gigabit speed apparently. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Download speed lower than upload speed

So i recently went from 300mb/s internet, on gigabit internet.

I have everything that could manage the speed of the internet, but i get higher upload speed than download on speedtest, is it normal? I want to specify that a friend of mine gets even 100mb/s when he downloads something and i can't get higher than 60.
