At wits' end with my packet loss. ISP says it's not on their end. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:48 PM PST Ping plotter here. Not sure if everything needed to diagnose is in that screenshot, but this has been going on for about a month now. No hardware changes have been made and I've had the same modem (ARRIS SURFboard SB8200) and the same router (Google WiFi Mesh w/ 3 nodes) since December. It especially gets worse at night time. My ISP says it's not their fault, and I should replace my hardware. This is severely affecting my career. Please reddit networking wizards, pls fix sorry if this breaks any of the sub rules, if there's a better sub for this point me towards it ISP is Atlantic Broadband [link] [comments] |
What am I dealing with and what is my best course of action Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:30 PM PST I moved into a new apartment at the beginning of last month. The apartment complex has a T1 business connection for all of the units and each unit gets their own ubiquiti WAP. Everyone signs into the same SSID with the same password but each unit has its own secured connection, there is no certificate or anything tieing you to your own WAP so I am not sure how that works. I pay for 200/200 but I can barely get a connection 10 feet from the WAP. Sometimes I get internet [good], sometimes I just get a network connection but no internet (which makes me think that they got a dumpy router/modem) and sometimes I get nothing at all. It is a constant fight. I am thinking of dropping and getting my own connection with my own router. I just got a new computer and am pulling 10mbps on the other side of my apartment and would like to do some online play but I don't think I will be able to with that speed [if i can even connect to the internet first]. My questions are does anyone know what kind of network setup this is and is there anything I can do with my current setup to make it better? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2019 08:09 AM PST See title! I am trying to make port forwarding a reality for server hosting purposes. Just wanted to know if there is any way to make this happen without having to pay the extra $10 a month. [link] [comments] |
Not getting gigabit speeds after upgrading to gigabit plan Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:14 PM PST This started about 6 months ago and I have no idea what to do. There is a tl;dr at the bottom if you don't want to read the full context of my situation. Prior to getting gigabit, my internet started having random disconnection and extreme slowdown problems (<1 Kb/s connection!) almost twice daily that lasted up to an hour and appeared seemingly randomly, so I decided to completely replace my modem and router suspecting that they might be broken/failing and upgrade my internet plan to the new Gigablast plan that Cox recently made available in my area just for the heck of it. Unsurprisingly, this did not work, and the random disconnections continued. I decided to call Cox support and after numerous troubleshoots they scheduled a tech to come and check out my setup to make sure nothing is wrong. Fast forward a few days, the tech checks out my modem and router and found that a local node which my modem connects to was damaged, which caused insane amounts of packet loss for multiple hours. He requests a ticket to fix this and estimated about 2-3 days to fix this issue. Fast forward a week from then, I'm STILL having random disconnection problems. I call Cox support again, we do the same troubleshooting, they schedule a tech to visit. This tech says again that a node is damaged and he will submit a new ticket to check it out. Two weeks later, I am still having these problems and would have already ended my plan with Cox had there been any other alternative ISP that wasn't satellite only. I call one final time with Cox support and we go through the motions and I pointedly threatened to cancel my subscription if something isn't done soon. They then escalated me to a supervisor who informs me that the node which was said to be damaged has been fixed and a new tech will be sent to check my internet setup yet again. Few days later, the tech comes and after all the testing surprisingly says that the box outside the house is damaged and requires repairs, which Cox will happily do for free. "Thank God", I thought, thinking that this would be the end of this. So the repairman comes and spends about 2 hours outside fixing the box and as soon as he finishes his work and leaves, my modem immediately disconnects, this time permanently. I was immediately pissed because I thought that he broke the box instead of repairing it, and phoned Cox support again for a new tech to come check it out. This time, when the tech came, he said that my modem had broken down (what a coincidence, a brand new modem just suddenly breaks down after the repairman leaves) and I need a new one. And to make it better, THEY CHARGED ME FOR THIS TECH CALL BECAUSE IT WAS MY FAULT. After stewing over this for a few hours I decided to go buy yet another modem of the same model to really test if it was the modem itself, and surprisingly it worked when set up. There was one problem, and it was that the speed on speedtest.net never reached 1 gigabit! In fact, it barely even touched 500 Mb/s. After dealing with Cox support, technicians, and testing the internet myself over the past month, I decided to count my blessings and say fuck it and see if it fixes itself. And 6 months later, Even though the disconnections have stopped, the speed is still less than 500 Mb/s. So what is the problem here? I have done everything I can think of short of buying yet another new modem, and I sure as hell do not want to possibly lose another 75$ because the tech thinks it's my fault. Info about my set up: Modem: Netgear CM1000 Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 Up to a dozen devices are connected at once to the router with ethernet switches and access points set up to handle all of this through ethernet ports in the walls. All connected by Cat5e ethernet cables tl;dr gigabit speeds not hitting gigabit, struggled for a month with Cox to fix a "node problem" then the outside unit, now they say it's a problem on my end and I have no idea how to fix this after doing every test I could find on the internet. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:42 PM PST This may be a dumb question but I'm trying to save some work. I have to swap out my ISP router for the third time. Each time, I have to reconnect about 15 devices to the new network including a bunch of smart home stuff which is tedious. If I name the network exactly the same and set the password the same on the new router, will my devices recognize it automatically? [link] [comments] |
Trying to figure out a simple solution with room to grow Posted: 13 Feb 2019 05:11 PM PST Ok so I'm another "I just got gigabit plz halp" noob. My original goal was just to replace the Verizon Fios quantum gateway router to save some cash and in my hunt I stumbled across this sub. After some reading I've decided not to waste my money on an off the shelf router, however I don't want to dive fully into the whole home networking just yet, nor do I want to spend the big bucks straight out of the gate. After reading tons of posts here it seems that everyone's situation/needs are different and I cannot seem to find the correct setup to meet my initial needs. Little bit of background: small house (1500 sqf), 2 floors, good ol stud n drywall, ability to run cable wherever needed, decently tech savvy, super susceptible to hobby addictions. What I want to do for now is get the bare minimums to be set up while I have time to do real research and planning. As it stands the basic router supplied by Verizon does a pretty decent job at covering my house with WiFi so I don't immediately need a mesh(?) or multiple access points(?) but I would like to add them down the line to get better coverage in my basement/back yard. I'm not terribly interested in setting up a rass pi or dedicated computer just yet. I have 3 wired connections right now, but would like to add a switch (?) down the line so I can wire each room eventually. It seems like the best place to start is with Ubiquiti products but even that's not clear. Is the AmpliFi HD Mesh Router a stand alone substitute for the Verizon router? If I get that will it work for now while I decide how I want to move forward or do I need additional gear? Oh yea, lastly I am on an internet only plan from Verizon, no cable tv. Thanks a ton in advance, I understand this sub is flooded with these posts [link] [comments] |
Not Getting Gigabit Speed on Office Network Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:17 PM PST I'm at a loss. I've tried everything. For the life of me, I cannot get the right download and upload speeds from my ISP on my home network. I pay for 1Gb down/35Mb up. (Spectrum) Initially we thought it was the ISP. When they tested the line, the signals were out of whack down the entire block. They replaced the cable drop coming from the pole. They even replaced the modem. After all of that, they were able to successfully detect the correct speeds straight from the modem using their meter. However, when I plug my computer directly into the modem, bypassing the router and switch, I get 400/30 on one computer and 200/30 on another computer. So, this would suggest a problem with the computer, right? I tested the cable and even re-crimped it. I used a line tester to ensure the signal traveled through and lines weren't crossed. I then plugged the cable directly into the modem and ran the speed test again. It capped at about 200mb down/30Mb up. For good measure I reset my Edgerouter X to it's factory settings and did a basic setup through the wizard. Same slow speed. What could this be? Deduction would suggest it has something to do with my NIC config or computer in general. What do you guys think? [link] [comments] |
DD-WRT worth it for Netgear AC1750 Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:26 PM PST Hello all, looking for advice. I have a Netgear AC1750 which JUST SO HAPPENS to be incompatible with most VPN's unless some Open-VPN finagling is done, and even then the support isn't great. On NordVPN's website they suggest us poor souls flash DD-WRT to open up the possibilities. I read on here that routers have come a long way and that you get what you pay for, but i actually quite like this simple hub for what it has to offer. Pretty good 2.4 and 5ghz signal strength and reliability for me and my flatmates place, decent security, easy to manage, etc. It's not great, but it's definitely not bad. Would i regret flashing DD-WRT for my router and should pay the few hundred for a nicer device or could i get away with DD-WRT and be fine? What are the pro's and con's here? I've looked through a few posts here that were helpful, but they all seem to be people who extensively use the devices they have instead of a home shmuck like me who just wants a VPN to work for him and his roomie. EDIT: I own the consumer grade R6400, not the R6700 (nighthawk). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:18 PM PST When using workstation, I can't seem to get the virtual network drivers installed. As it's about to install, it just freezes there. When I use VMware player, I get the drivers install no hassle but unfortunately, gns3 has issues with player and VIX and vmrun.exe file. Can anyone say why Pro doesn't allow me to install the network drivers? I did a clean install as admin and no luck.

Trying to set up 2 devices under the same IP but only 1 needs internet. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:12 PM PST Howdy all, I've put together a diagram of what I am trying to put together. I've attached the link. But basically, I'm trying to figure out how I can -while using 1 IP make 2 devices work without an conflicting issue since only 1 is actually connecting to the internet. https://imgur.com/FcHUHev (old image) https://imgur.com/ORxLAjk (updated image) [link] [comments] |
What the heck is this other 5Ghz network with no security? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:15 AM PST I just recently setup a linksys E9500, left all the settings as default. Ran into some problems this morning where some of my devices were unable to connect to the 5Ghz network. I disabled 5Ghz band steering, and that fixed the issue, everything now connects fine. However when I got to my amazon fire Tv I saw this It shows a strange 5Ghz network with my network name, with no security. When I try to connect to it, the TV stick sorta just freezes until I cancel it. What the heck is this? None of my other devices are showing this as an available network...But the fire stick is even after rebooting it. Is normal or is this a security risk for my network? [link] [comments] |
Should I set up a separate SSID for IoT devices, or an entire separate AP? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:04 PM PST I want to minimize the load on the main WiFi network, but it seems just adding another IoT SSID onto the same APs (from Ubiquiti) wouldn't help do that. Is adding another access point (ASUS) a better idea, or is there no difference? [link] [comments] |
First time doing layer 3 switching! VLANS at home! (noob patting self on back post) Posted: 12 Feb 2019 08:57 PM PST So I have a Cisco 2560 switch at home, and I just used it to do layer three routing and create separate VLANS at my house! I don't fully understand what I did, and I just followed these instructions but I am so happy! Well.. I had to do some additional configuring and troubleshooting but still, these instructions got me going. I have VLAN 1 (192.168.2.5) and VLAN2 (192.168.1.200) My computer is currently 192.168.1.235, and is getting out to the net. My esxi server is 192.168.2.2 with a CentOS maching running at 192.168.2.112 which I am using as an SFTP server. And everything can communicate!!!! I even got my raspberry pi (192.168.1.9) which is running a vpn server to be able to communicate with cameras on the 192.168.2.x network!!! I had to add some routes in the pi to get it going but it's going. I even managed to get this all going between the Cisco 2560 and and SG200. So it's all passing traffic lol. I don't know how I did it but, I DID IT!!! This is dope!!!!!!!!!!!! I know the IP scheme is atrocious and things are plugged in to such random ports it makes my head spin trying to understand it all but that actually makes it cooler to me. It's stupid complicated for no reason other than I wanted to see if I could do it. lol [link] [comments] |
Bizarre sudden NAT loopback problem Posted: 13 Feb 2019 08:52 PM PST The Setup
The problem Until today, everything was working fine. Access to webapps from outside and inside my network was as expected (myapp.mydomain.com -> 10.11.12.13 -> 192.168.1.2 by DMZ -> 192.168.0.10 by port forwarding). Today, I upgraded the ER-X from 1.9.3 to 2.0.0 firmware. Since then, this works fine from outside the network, but the same request from inside the network now terminates at the outer router (myapp.mydomain.com -> 10.11.12.13 -> 192.168.1.1[according to the router, remote admin is disabled, so this must route to its internal interface] -> Verizon router admin page) If I add an /etc/hosts entry (192.168.1.2 myapp.mydomain.com), it works (myapp.mydomain.com -> 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.0.10 by port forwarding), so the ER-X, which is the only thing I changed anything on today, appears to be working identically to how it was before. But the Verizon router, which I hadn't made any changes to (or even logged into in months) is suddenly handling this differently, breaking functionality that I depend on, and I have no idea why or how. TL;DR - upgraded ER-X firmware; Verizon router outside it won't loopback NAT properly anymore [link] [comments] |
Have to keep resetting router every time I reboot Posted: 13 Feb 2019 08:47 PM PST Hey all, Since Monday, my router has been losing internet access every time I reboot it (turn it off in the night, and then turn it on whenever I need it again), and when I boot it up, the light claims to not have internet access. When I reset it, it just works again, usually I need to log in with my ISPs credentials. Feels like my router is dying, I only got it in November, it's a TP Link Archer C1200, any ideas? Added an additional access point Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:31 PM PST I added another unifi ap-ac-lite to my home and when they share the same ssid I cannot connect wirelessly to the network at all. Any ideas on what I might have done wrong? If I assign each ap to a different ssid it works fine but I want the network to be configured in a way where the ap will drop the client if they don't meet the minimum rssi and they will then connect to the other ap automatically. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Suggestions for new router and modem (comcast) Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:57 PM PST I am moving and the only option in my new building is Xfinity/comcast, which I've never had. I'm looking at the 150mbps plan, and I'd like to buy the router and modem separately. That way I can sell the modem when we move down the road. Some other details... Its just my wife and I, but I play a lot of online games and we both use wifi on our phones/laptops frequently as well as streaming apps. I'd like to buy a router thats I can have for the next 5 years or so that can give me the best performance. Can you please recommend a good modem and router for my situation? Thanks! Network problems fixed by using VPN, do I need to worry? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:47 PM PST Hi. I live in the basement of some people, and for now my computer is connected to their router through ethernet. I have had some problems getting connection on the ethernet down here so I have been up there a few times to help them get the cabling and setup right. They seem to have pretty low knowledge of networking and such, so I have not been too paranoid of having it like it is now. However, today I started getting short disconnects all the time. Disconnect from games, discord, etc, for like 5 seconds. I tried ipconfig /release, flushdns and everything I could google myself to. Also reset the network drivers through windows. Nothing helped. I did "ping www.google.com -n x" for a while, and it randomly disconnected giving "General failure" 3-4 times and then came back. Was like that for 1-2 hours. When I now tried to turn on my NordVPN, everything is working fine. I get no dropouts, no disconnects from anything. I suspected at first the router just needed to restart or something, but didn't have the chance to try that. Now I dont know since enabling VPN fixed it? Should I be worried someone is on the network with bad intentions? Or is it just an innocent occurence? Thank you for your answers! [link] [comments] |
Need DOCSIS 3.0 device, but which to purchase? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:05 AM PST Looking for a modem that I don't have to rent monthly from Comcast. This would be my first "non Comcast" modem and I am indeed a novice in home networking. Not sure price range? Under $100? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2019 05:30 AM PST Before anyone says, wiring the house for Cat 6 is not possible. I've got an unused coax system in the house that once upon a time used to send signal from the living room TV to all the other TVs in the house. Figured I may as well put it to use. I'm a bit lost on how to wire it. My setup is as follows, Coax from Virgin Media (ISP) enters house in living room. This coax plugs directly into the single port on the back of the modem/router. Also next to the router is an unplugged main coax lead that feeds to the rest of the rooms in the house. Nothing to do with Virgin, this was here when we moved in. So my stupid question is, how do I get the internet into the MoCA? Preferably I don't want to be messing around splitting the ISP coax, so do they take the Ethernet as an IN? Like this: Router ---(ethernet)-> Main Moca ---(coax)-> house coax network ---(coax)-> Moca elsewhere ---(ethernet)-> equipment If not, I suppose this would be the setup A) ISP coax ---(coax)-> Main Moca ---(coax)-> Router B) Main Moca ---(coax)-> house coax network ---(coax)-> Moca elsewhere in the house ---(ethernet)-> equipment TL;DR Can I use Ethernet as the internet input for the MoCA, or do I need to use coax? tia! DIY Question: Needed supplies for conduit? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:32 PM PST Hi all, I'm going to Home Depot later to buy some conduit to bring cables from my living room to my upstairs loft. Conduit will be outdoors on and West facing wall that gets a lot of sun. I'm buying CAT6a cables, CAT6a keystones, and keystone jacks from Monoprice. In the future I would like to be able to run OS2 or OM4 fiber so I need to worry about bend radiuses. I'm wondering what supplies would be best to do this? I have all the tools. I'm just not quite sure on the best pieces to get to build this conduit (i.e. Schedule 40 PVC, Metal, etc.). [link] [comments] |
How to turn off wireless functionality from cable services’ modem (Technicolor TC8717T)? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:22 PM PST Hi, new to the sub so please bear with me. I'll start off by saying that my internet service provider is Spectrum, I have the 200+ mb service and have the modem Technicolor TC8717T, but I don't use the wireless functionality from the modem itself. I have a Google Wi-Fi mesh network connected to the modem and use that Wi-Fi from the routers instead. I have issues from time to time with it randomly going down, not too long ago a spectrum guy came out and installed a cable box in a room, I asked him if he had any knowledge on this sort of stuff and commented that having the modem's wireless functionality on while using the Wi-Fi on the router could cause some interference. Is this true? Is there anyway to turn it off on the modem? I'm sure the google Wi-Fi range will be way better so I prefer to use that. The guy did check my internet speed off the modem itself so I know it isn't the service. Any advice helps! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:18 PM PST I'm looking to build out a home network with 10Gbe, and my wife is a photographer with heavy storage needs. I'd like a good NAS that we can kind of grow into, and I like the apps/software that Synology is putting out. It'll help cut down on other expenses we pay for. I'd also like to keep things clean and consolidated with rack storage. I'm nervous that the DDR3 and Intel Atom C2538 won't be able to keep up in say 4-5 years, especially if I use it as a Plex server or the Synology apps that let you stream to your devices. My wife will edit straight off the NAS (my plan anyway), she's terrible with digital workflows and staying organized. That's why I want the 10Gbe mainly. I have to buy the PCIe card for that...not a big deal. I'm not sure how to calculate out or come up with whether or not this device will work/be a good investment for 5+ years of use. The next one up Synology offers is DDR 4 and a C3538, with a 25% higher score, but + $600. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:11 PM PST Im looking for 8 port Poe+ switch to run presumably 4-8 cameras, need recommendations or advice on what to stay away from. Trying to set up my own network. Just bought a dedicated PC to use as my NVR. I have a TP Link or a Zytel 2in1Router. Im assuming brand choice/compatibility for the switch wont really be an issue. Just need some advice on what to get. Im new to this but have a decent understanding of pc/electronics. I dont want something thats top of the line, just something that is reliable. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:09 PM PST Hello everybody, This is my first post here and I must say that my networking knowledge is pretty basic. First, a little background: I have a really strange home network. The ISP provides a router (shitty one) and to this router (via a switch) we connect other routers. Each router works as a standalone router (which means they all provide their own IP's with their DHCP). I know that is not really efficient, but I cant really change this now. The issue is that I am having high ping "spikes" between one router and the "main" router. Please see the chart below (it goes 1ms until a sudden 637): Do you guys know what could be happening? This is pain in the ass for gaming, for example. I would not be able to provide much more context since I am just an amateur, but I mainly would like to know if I need to call a technician or I can solve it myself. I thank you all in advance. All the best! [link] [comments] |
