Surface Pro 6 VS MacBook Air 13" 2017

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:47 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm a prospective uni student looking to find a solid, dependable and portable laptop for mostly university use. I'm also on a budget, hence the MacBook Air 2017. I've narrowed down my options to the Mac and the Surface Pro 6, and was wondering which one is better?

A few things I'd like out of the laptop:

    • Easy note-taking
    • Comfortable writing for long periods of time (e.g. essays, assesments)
    • Fast performance
    • Longevity

P.S. I'm also a little nervous about getting the Surface due to it's slightly more tablet nature. I'd like something sturdy, and I'm worried I just won't get that feel from the Surface.

    Thanks in advance!

Help in deciding what to buy

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:10 PM PST

Narrowed down my picks to dell 7567,the Acer swift 3 and the dell g3

The hard part is deciding on what I can Live without, battery is key and the swift and 7567 are great but the g3 lacks in that department but with performance the 7567 and dell g3 shine and swift is comparably worse and with portability and build I like the swift and g3 and lastly price the 7567 is cheaper but not by much and I don't have a problem with paying for any of them. This is where I can't decide I have been told g3 is the way to go but am skeptical after some research and am back to a circle of indecisiveness on what is right for me

For context: cs student, and will do light to mid levels of gaming (mostly e sports titles but may venture in shooters) and battery is important along with longevity

TLDR: what the best all rounder that will last

Laptop for University Student...and is a 2 in 1 worth it?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:36 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, but preferably WAY WAY LOWER, that's my max//USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life. I am also mildly interested in drawing and writing my notes down on a 2 in 1 with a pen.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I need it to be portable.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is preferable. I'm open to anything though!!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Good size for portability.
    • I only intend on downloading the basic Microsoft programs (word, excel, powerpoint, maybe OneNote), and a drawing program regardless of 2 in 1 capability.
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality and ability to last a while. Also, if 2 in 1, touch screen should not be crap, right lol?
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like to use a pen on the screen but...is a 2 in 1 worth it? Would I be missing out? Also, what are your recommendations for RAM and storage capacity? I am kind of a major indecisive dumbass.

    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

    Edit: just mentioned pen

    Art & Gaming laptop?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:18 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase $1000-2000 AUD (australia)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. would like good battery life and memory/RAM

How important is weight and thinness to you? Would highly prefer it to be a bit lightweight and portable

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

As it's mainly for art, would prefer a large screen size. I currently have a 15.6 so nothing smaller than 12

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-art programs such as photoshop, paint tool sai, and possibly 3d modelling programs like Maya in the future

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • games like guild wars 2 and elder scrolls online. Would like smooth gameplay at normal settings, high graphics if possible but not a must. Seeing as I currently only get around 15-30fps, 60+ fps would be really nice.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - comfortable & precise keyboard, as well as good RGB value? idk how to explain but the colours on my current monitor are off in a way where when i transfer my art to my phone, the colours are very off.

    Finishing thoughts

    • ive been using a lenovo thinkpad for the past few years and it's been really awful. Heading into college in a few weeks and really need to upgrade for my art. Any help appreciated & and im not very good with technical terms, sorry but thank you in advance!! :)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? No preference

Hey guys! I need your help. I'm thinking of getting the Acer Helios 500, but I'm not sure whether to get the AMD/Radeon or Nvidia/Intel version. It is only a 50$ difference. But I need to know the difference in performance. Which one is more of a bang for my buck? I don't care about the price that much honestly, but I like this model because it is similar to the Predator 17 which I have currently. I do some video editing/music, but mostly gaming. I'm not very educated in this stuff of graphics cards and such, so plz help.

    Portable + Thunderbolt 3

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:32 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking to remake my current setup since my favorite notebook (Pixelbook) is sitting on my bag most of the day because it's useless for Mendeley+OneDrive+Word+Indesign+PDF Editing (awesome at other things).

I am a teacher and researcher on social media, I also work on social media and this means a whole lot of different scenarios and uses. Ideally, selling everything and buying from scratch, I think I'd go for a Blade Stealth 1 or similar, an eGPU, a 4k 120fps display and an iPad Pro. Not so easy selling everything, I could easily sell the Pixelbook on 750€ and maybe get something with Windows that is light and portable as the Pixelbook.

I'd be looking at a Windows laptop for graphic design, social media (community management) media consumption and desktop use (I have a 4K 27" inch monitor). Mild gaming or chance to have an eGPU at home. But the problem is that my whole setup is too much, expensive, heavy and too limited by iOS and Chrome OS when I actually need a 100% Windows/Mac workflow (I'm on the hate cycle with Apple right now).

Programs that I run: a private Cloud Server, One Drive, Acrobat Pro or similar, Illustrator, Indesign, GIMP or Pixelmator, Jamovi, SPSS, Mendeley Desktop, Outlook, ...

Games that I play: primarily Civilization 5, PUBG Mobile on the iPad, Black Ops 4, sometimes (I also have The Witcher, L4D2, MW3, BF3, and a whole lot of games that I don't play).

I'm currently using a Pixelbook, an iPad and an Asus ROG Zephyrus GTX 1080.

    Pixelbook

+ pros: portable, super light, sleek design, great keyboard and trackpad, great screen, good battery

    - cons: I can't manage fonts therefore I can't do Scribus+GIMP (graphic design). VM are really slow (Crostini or Crossover). Can't use my cloud storage workflow unless I connect via webapp which is a PITA. PDF editing is also too narrowed without direct access to a synced folder (imagine ~Dropbox ~Corp OneDrive)

Current use: media consumption. Also, when I'm out and I have to do mild social media, or mild writing, since it doesn't support have the Mendeley plugins on Word. It's so thin and light that you can actually take it anywhere. Anyway... it can't actually do anything that you can't do on the iPad Pro...

    iPad PRO 2017

    + pros: urta-portable, great battery,

    - cons: instagram native app is =null (the iPhone App) and works only on landscape, can't really do hardcore work on it, just mild and occasionally... doesn't have a desktop Word that integrates plugins for instance, and the browsers are not good for plugins either... Opening a file and editing it on the cloud has gotten easier.

Current use: media consumption and PDF editing (mark up and send to remote server is a pain) but it's good as a secondary device. Probably keeping it (actually we have 2 of these guys, a 10,5 and a 12,9 with a smart keyboard)

    ASUS

    + pros: can DO EVERYTHING, the 144hz screen is I M P R E S S I V E.

    - cons: not actually that portable... It BENDS. It's bigger than a Macbook Pro 15", its battery lasts only 1-2h, charger is heavy, the lower firm bends on the lap, it's noisy, and for media creation the trackpad is bull. 1080p is BAD for graphic design or even mild video editing.

Current use: I use it as a desktop computer; gaming, graphic design, statistic analysis, writing, everything at home except restroom, coach or bed. I love it's 144hz screen but at this price point (paid ~1800€) I could maybe get a TB3 laptop + 144hz display + eGPU. I think a Surface or something like that would suffice.

The most powerful 2-in-1 on the market

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:33 AM PST

I don't particularly care about money, but I would like to get the most powerful 2 in 1 on the market. Dedicated GPU is a must (will be running FEA simulations) and I would like to not have to buy another one for a while. Ideally, a biometric entry method would be good, as well as a decent battery life. What have you guys got?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A machine with a good build quality that can last many years with a 1070 or a rtx.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I found a couple of laptops that caught my attention. They are: Helios 500 even though it has a 1070 i heard a lot of good reviews about this laptop and its nice build quality. MSI-GL73 and the MECH-17 This one seems to be the no brainer a 2070 with a very good specs, but since eluktronics is not a well known company makes me feel a little bit skeptical about the build quality and how well will it handle the years.

    Looking for a gaming laptop!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:01 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

So, I'm currently studying programming, and for netbeans and such my old crappy laptop was barely enough, but now its crashing everytime I open Unity so I thought it may be about time, I gathered some money, got help from parents and finally on my way to find the perfect laptop for me.

Have in mind it's going to be my gaming station, so I'm looking for something as high-end as possible, I wouldn't treat it as a programming laptop, more as a gaming one.

    Ok so, form:

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Flexible, but somewhere between 700-1k. Buying from Spain.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Dont really care about battery life, it should have some but it's just gonna work as a pc that moves from home, college, gf's home.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

As long as I can carry it in my backpack it's fine :)

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

A pretty nice plus, but not my main focus

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Already stated that, basically gaming, Im gonna be programming things with it, hopefully games in a future, but mostly is for gaming, I'm a junkie for indie games but I want it to move new games, a 1060 may be hoping too much but 1050 Ti or smth like that would be cool too.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I'm gonna be playing the batmans and Lara Crofts on it, also maybe I'll get Anthem, so yeah, if it can move those (not on Ultra ofc) I'm happy with it.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Please let it have more than 2 USB ports and HDMI, but thats a staple right? Also of course all good add-ons would be cool, but again, not the focus.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

    Thanks for helping!

    M.2 SSD suggestions (Lenovo x1e)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:20 PM PST

I just got my Lenovo X1 extreme and need a second 1tb ssd. I'm pretty torn on what to get and hoping someone can help me choose/suggest a better drive. There's a few options but all I know is that I want a drive that's not going to boost the laptops temperatures and has a decent sustained read/write speed without going over $200.

I've been looking originally at the Crucial P1 for $144, but it seems to have a meh sustained speeds and drops to like 20mb/s after only a minute of file transfers.

Then there was the MyDigitalSSD BPX Pro at $189

Just today the HP EX920 for $169 popped up and seems like maybe it outperforms the other cards but could have temp issues.

And also the HP EX900 at $139

NVMe would be ideal, but it just seems to be that SATA isn't cheaper than NVMe when were dealing with m.2 1tb SSD's. if there was a significant price/temp drop in a SATA card that'd be fine too.

I'm also not 100% sure on whether all of these fit my laptop - I haven't managed to figure out what specs I should be looking for to confim that.

Laptop for someone who’s in the military and needs it for school/light gaming

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:17 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Less than 600 is my goal but I'd spend up to 1k if it was perfect. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Preferably good battery life and good specs but 2 in 1 would be nice too

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very. I fly a lot and would like to be able toss it in my backpack easily

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches or less. I have a 15.6 inch screen laptop and it's bulky. Slightly smaller and thinner would be perfect

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly want this for school, light gaming and watching tv when I travel. School is number one, so it needs a good keyboard for typing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I have a pc at home I seriously game with. I'd like to be able to play a few games but that's not it's main purpose. Mainly league of legends/Csgo/brawlhala. Around 60 FPS on low/medium settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard for typing is main thing

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. To sum it up I need a small/thin ish laptop I can travel with easy to type papers and watch some Netflix and play a few games of league of legends when I have free time.

Screen size/brand doesn't matter. My only requirements are price range and minimal software lag.

    What does reddit suggest?

[US] [$800-$1300] Laptop for dual work and home use, big multitasker, light gaming a +

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:44 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Buying from USA in California, budget tops out around $1300

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I had a 2 in 1 that I rarely used in tablet form, and I felt like I paid extra for 2 in 1 that I would've rather gone toward the specs. 2 in 1 would be nice but not required, and I rarely use it somewhere I can't plug it in. So primarily specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It's a plus but not super necessary. It will be plugged in and stationary at work, and resting in my lap at home. Nothing monstrous, but not putting it in a backpack and hiking it around a campus or anything.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows will be primary but I always enjoy the option to dual boot to Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Just more than 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be running Chrome with many tabs including gmail, either office programs or gsheets or both, occasionally processing databases through software, often lots of PDFs open, etc. I'm a slob when it comes to closing things I'm done with and I don't want that to slow me down. I will occasionally use it to game but it would be things like Stardew or Civ at the most intensive. Gaming is low priority, probably best for productivity if I can't to be honest lol.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is low priority.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I've had some issues with build quality in the past so that's important. I really don't want another hinge to fall apart. I'm a mechanical keyboard user so the nicer the keyboard the better, but that's icing on the cake. Don't really get much use out of touch screen although I don't have a ton of experience using it. Optical drive not needed, fingerprint reader would be neat.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I said, this laptop will spend a lot of time plugged in, both in the sense of power and peripherals, I just want to be able to take my work home with me and work remotely more easily when it's called for. My current work PC is getting quite old and not keeping up with my needs, so I'd like to essentially replace it with this laptop. Please ask any questions that are helpful to giving a suggestion. I also would prefer to buy the laptop from Costco if you know of something there that fits the bill. In searching there recently I came across these that were appealing:

    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Business Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 1080p - $1300

    Lenovo ThinkPad T480s Business Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 1080p - $1249

Someone a while ago said ThinkPads were cool and I guess it had a big impact on me, lol. Really appreciate the help, y'all are doing god's work.

Inexpensive yet well built for browsing the web, documents, etc.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:36 PM PST

Want an inexpensive laptop for my mom to use so she can browse the web (Youtube, Amazon, Email, Netflix) that is sturdy/well built and decent build quality.

1080p screen would be nice, 13" minimum. ~$100-150 USD in CA. Depending on how much more quality $50 would be, $200 would be okay too. Chromebook or anything goes.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life + good build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. Will be sitting in lap or table/desk at all times. Moved room to room to a desk.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Chrome OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13", 15" preffered

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Chrome, document writer, pdf viewer

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Again, just for my mom to use to browse the internet, view pdf files, type up documents, etc. Simple stuff. Would like the ability to cast from it too.

[US] [Up to $1500] Programming/College/Light Gaming

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:10 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, UP to $1500, realistically would like to spend between $700 and $1200
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Looking for decent specs per dollar, good battery life (all day, ~10+ hrs would be nice) when not gaming (only light gaming however)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Let me preface this, I have been somewhat spoiled in this area, for the past (almost) 5 years, I've had my Mid-2013 MacBook Air with its Aluminum build, dual core i7, and 8gb of ram. I'm (likely unrealistic) looking for something that will be comparable in terms of feel in the hand (Aluminum, not much flex if any), however, I am not opposed to a heavier machine.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Don't care, prefer no OS as I already have a Win 10 Pro License I'm going to install on it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Indifferent about size. I would HIGHLY prefer 1440p or 4k (leaning towards 1440, but I haven't seen any laptops with such a display)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Minimal light gaming, CS:GO, some simulator games (Velocidrone, FSx), going to be using Microsoft Office (already own), PyCharm, and Eclipse
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would like to get 60/30 FPS at medium/low settings in CS:GO, Velocidrone, and the intermittent game of Modded Minecraft
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't care about touch-screen (would be cool, but highly unnecessary), finger-print reader, or optical drive. I would like a keyboard with a decent feel as this laptop will be used for college, and odds and ends programming. Windows Precision drivers are a must for the touchpad, would prefer a metal touchpad like my old mac, but not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • This point of this is really that I am starting to feel limited by my Mac (running Windows/Ubuntu), because I use my desktop quite often, and just recently started using my laptop for a college course I'm taking in dual enrollment now (High School & College Courses at the same time). Ultimately, this laptop doesn't need to "game" as that will likely save a good chunk of cash. I've been looking at some lenovo thinkpads, specifically the E485, and the T580, in addition to the LG gram, and the Dell XPS line. I'm not afraid to order a laptop with a low-end hard drive, or little to no ram (or no hdd for that matter) and install/upgrade them myself (with money outside of this budget). Likewise with the CPU if it is a socketed system. I would definitely prefer the ability to install an NVMe drive over a sata drive. No need for a spinning drive, as I will buy a decent sized ssd, and can then put other files on my large NAS.

    • I just want to thank you all in advanced, and apologize for my lack of commitment in this area. I have limited experience buying laptops, and just want something nice. I looked for a good bare bones system, even messaged Lenovo to see if they would sell their Thinkpad E485 AMD with no HDD/RAM (no dice), but I just cant make a decision that seems to check all the boxes. If you guys have any questions, I'm going to be near my PC for a few hours, otherwise, I'm nearly always on mobile.

[CA]Computer Science Student, looking for light gaming, up to $2000 CAD

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:32 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: From Canada, budget is $2000 CAD.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent battery life would be nice on non-gaming work loads.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I can deal with weight, but the lighter the better. Thinness is not much of an issue unless its massive like some gaming laptops are.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15'-15'6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will mostly be playing indie games and e-sports games, would like to run triple A's if I wanted to on low settings. Will also be using some development software such as android studio.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The type of games I listed above are the type of games I'm playing. I'd like to maintain 60 frames. On more intensive games, I'm fine with cranking down the settings to get adequate fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An SSD for boot, hard drive for storage. I would like the keyboard not to be too loud. It would be nice if the touch pad was a little bit resistant to my palm.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Decent IO is appreciated.

Dell Inspiron 15 7567 Laptop: GTX 1050 Ti

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:22 PM PST

So I recently ordered the Dell Inspiron 15 7567 from Amazon:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07793DRK9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was supposed to be the GTX 1050 Ti, correct? My understanding is that the only difference between them is the Ti has 768 CUDA Cores vs the regular 1050 only having 640 CUDA Cores.

Well, I looked at my system information through the NVIDIA Control Panel and sure enough it says GTX 1050 (no ti) 4GB Vram but only 640 CUDA Cores. Did Amazon send me the wrong one or am I missing something?

    Thanks.

Looking for a laptop for college. Budget $800.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:02 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: AUD$1100 - Australia
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery is the most important factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably less than 1.6 kgs.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14'
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? None at all.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Have been using an ancient used Lenovo ThinkPad for over half decade (it's definitely even older than that). The new one will only be used for web surfing and study (Microsoft Office etc.)

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

    Looking for a 13.3" or less 2-in-1, $600/PHP30,000, PH

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:39 PM PST

I'm looking for a laptop that my sister is going to use for college. She does pretty well on her 5-ish year old Celeron now, but the battery's not that good and it's showing its age. She really wants a touch screen so she could just have a tablet and a laptop in one device. Details below:

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Not greater than 30,000 PHP (600 USD). Less is better. Philippines

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

A 2 in 1 is a must with good battery life. Can do without a GPU.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Preferably less than two kilos.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

No bigger than 13.3 inches. Smaller is better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Writing documents, web browsing, watching videos, casual photo editing (just messing around on Inkscape and GIMP), low-req gaming (Mount and Blade, Sims 4, 2D games).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Sims 4 and Mount and Blade: Warband is the most demanding one I can think of.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Since it's a 2 in 1, touchscreen is a must. A good keyboard and pen support would be nice to have but not a must.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Right now, we're looking at this Lenovo 2-in-1. It really fits well within our budget and it's available locally but we're hunting for any other options just in case as we haven't read any long-term use reviews yet about it.

General schoolish computer, United States, $1000, 15.6"

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:39 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. Battery life is nice because it usually means lower energy consumption, but I almost always plug laptops in, anyway. I specifically am not interested in any sort of 2 in 1 form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want a thin laptop. They look and feel fragile. A lot of gaming laptops can be too heavy, though.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. ArcGIS Pro ArcMAP Campaign Cartographer GIMP

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rome Total War II Imperator: Rome Crusader Kings II Hearts of Iron IV

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like something durable. I can be rough on things. I absolutely need a numpad. Typing without one is awkward. I would like a touchscreen, but that isn't mandatory.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000 max, USA

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:16 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000 max budget, live in USA.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Pretty good specs for the money, decent battery life.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very important. As long as it is a laptop that I can carry reasonably easily in a bag, I'm good.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    -Windows 10.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    - N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

-Possibly playing games like Call of Duty (not often or likely), heavy Photoshop/art and video editing.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

-Games similar to Call of Duty, at lowest settings. Maybe 30-60fps.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

    -N/A

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

-Any games that will be played would most likely be at the lowest settings, and 16BG of ram is a definite need. Dedicated graphics card is preferred as well. Not looking for a gaming laptop, but I may end up gaming in small amounts.
