Ubuntu won't boot after new installation Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:22 AM PST I have Windows on an SSD. I have a 1TB HDD for my D drive for additional storage which is just a 300gb partition, the rest is left clear cause it's never used. I decided to install Ubuntu on the HDD, so I used a USB installer, and made a 30gb partition on my HDD then installed it. It finished and told me to reboot. I unplugged the USB. When I tried to boot my system from the HDD to load Ubuntu it said "Operating system not found". Tried to figure it out but eventually gave up so I tried installing Ubuntu again, this time I pressed the automatic option to replace the current Ubuntu, rather than the "Something else" button. This then deleted the partition I just made and made 2 new ones. One is a FAT32 the other bigger partition is Ext4. Now when I load from the HDD it just goes straight to windows which is weird to me, because windows is on the SSD. Can anyone help me figure out what I've done wrong? As far as I'm aware at this point, I have Ubuntu installed but just cant boot it. [link] [comments] |
Always been confused with software updates. Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:52 AM PST I've been using linux for years now, and for some things it is really great to not be bound by windows. But for other things I am endlessly confused with. I typically install software through the package managers (on mint btw) so when a software says it has an update like in this case firefox, and it downloads "firefox-65.0.tar.bz2" i have no idea what to do with it. I can open it and see the files, but they just look like generic program files to me, with no installer or read-me. What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
How to choose Linux or Windows on Startup? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:39 AM PST Hi (first time poster sorry), I have Linux installed on a different partition on my Surface Book 2, and I plan on installing it to an SD card soon so I can have more space & freedom. My question is that, when starting up my laptop, how can I make it choose an operating system on startup when the SD card is plugged in to the computer, as opposed to booting into windows just to get onto linux. Thanks for the help! edit: distro is Linux Mint (most recent version) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:26 PM PST Hey guys, so I'm a bit new to the MATE D.E and I was wondering how you could do a slideshow you different wallpapers that change every so minutes and all. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:22 AM PST I remember in early 00s my father would use Linux Mandrake constantly. Nowadays, I can't even find the ISO's for it. What happened to Mandrake? [link] [comments] |
All distros: Flash/pepper player freezes for 1 sec and then catches up. Please help me fix it. Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:39 AM PST The only thing keeping me from making Linux my daily OS is flash performance. I like to watch live TV while working while maintaining a useful 2nd monitor. For example, if I watch MSNBC.com/now and enable flash, the video plays fine but the image will pause for a second every 10 or so seconds and then catches up. I've tried at least a dozen different distros and browsers but experience the same. Currently on Suse Tumbleweed. This doesn't happen on Windows. I know it's more of a flash issue but am hoping there's a workaround. Tnx [link] [comments] |

Downgrade from Raspbian to Raspbian Lite via SSH Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:02 AM PST Hello, I have a headless Raspberry Pi 3B currently running Raspbian but since it's headless I'd like to save space/resources and downgrade to the Lite version. I have access to it via SSH but I have absolutely no idea how to make changes like that from there. I don't mind wiping it, but I have no SD card reader. I think in normal mode you do this by pressing shift on boot and then changing the OS there, but I'd prefer to do it via SSH if possible as it'd be a lot easier. Could someone help please? Thanks. Getting a modest chrome book and want to install linux on it Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:57 AM PST So I bought the Lenovo s330 Chromebook the other day when it was on sale. I decided I will remove ChromeOS and install linux on it. I always wanted a linux machine as a secondary device, so thats what im doing. My question is that, will my laptop be able to run linux smoothly and nicely? Im just gonna use it to watch stuff and some web browsing, no heavy use. My specs are: CPU: MediaTek 8173C | GPU: integrated | 4 GB ram | and 64 SSD eMMC. Maybe you guys could recommend some of the lighter window managers and/or distros. Thanks [link] [comments] |

How do I install win on a partition, but without having pendrive / dvd? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:44 PM PST I want to install windows just to play (I know how to do this in linux with a "gambiarra", but my computer is weak and certainly could not play) but it gave some problem with my pendrive and it does not appear in the file manager , neither with lsusb nor gparted, so I need to install linux without having any external bootable media. Is there any program to do this? I remember already having installed windows 10 when I was using windows 7, using a program that I do not remember the name of, it just did some work and after that the new windows was available. Trackpad not working properly on Ubuntu 18.04 Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:57 AM PST Hello. I recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 on my Razer blade stealth and the touchpad is barely usable. The mouse often stops moving well before I stop moving my finger or doesn't register my touch at all. I have tried googling the issue and nothing online seems to work. I know it's not a hardware problem because the track pad works in Windows. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Question about drivers on Linux Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:09 AM PST A bit worried about linux I read somewhere that someone couldn't have the proper driver for his headphones, resulting in shittier audio than on Windows. Does this kind of thing happen often? I would hate to use linux for a year, only to buy a new monitor, or new headphones & not being able to use them to their full potential. [link] [comments] |
Question about updating Chrome/Package Manager? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:20 AM PST Greetings! I was hoping someone could help me solve a tech mystery at work. I am trying to update our laptop's Chrome browser to the latest version. The Chrome website says that Linux users must update Chrome through the "package manager." I've always been a Windows user, so I'm trying to understand what this means. I've researched different package managers and was unable to find any of them on my computer. Although since it uses CentOS I have a hunch that it uses YUM? How do I access it? Thank you so much for helping out a Linux noob. I apologize if this post is it a bit scrambled - I probably don't even know what I don't know. [link] [comments] |
How to change folders color globally? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:37 AM PST Hey, i know you can change them one by one by right clicking and going to folder color, but there is any to change them all globally? Ps: Im using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS [link] [comments] |
Macbook Pro can't boot to linux. Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:31 AM PST Greetings! My old Macbook Pro has served me well with various distros trough the last few years, but recently I must had messed up something in it. I was doing a internet recovery and after since I can't boot it from either USB nor DVD. I did all the possible keybind resets (Vram, ect.) but nothing. pressing the option key on startup brings me the menu to select the boot device but it first just freeze for a couple try, now it only boots up the OSX instead or gives me an error that there is no bootable system. Could some give me an insight what I might have to try to make it shine with linux glory again? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Why should I use anything other than Bash as my shell? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:19 PM PST Hi all, I've been using Arch for a few months now, and I have my system set up in a way that is usable and looks okay (though there are many improvements to be made!). However, I am curious if I am missing out. I currently use bash as my shell, but I see that people often use other shells or that at the very least other shells are available. What are the practical advantages of using a different shell? Do they do things that bash can't? What is there to improve even on the shell front? I'll admit that I am not 100% sure as to the distinction between the shell and terminal, so perhaps that is confusing me a bit. [link] [comments] |
