Lenovo Ideapad Y700 Slow boot and 100% disk activity Tech Support

Lenovo Ideapad Y700 Slow boot and 100% disk activity

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:05 AM PST

    Hello!

My friend has Lenovo ideapad Y700 laptop and is having problems with it being slow, booting slow and having 100% disk activity. The fastest read speed it reaches is around 9MB/s. Boot time takes 2-3 minutes. 1 minute if no services are on (only Microsoft ones). 5-6 minutes til all startup programs turn on (Chrome, Steam, Discord). When I lauched it in safe mode it basically takes no time til it boots to desktop.

What would cause the disk to be slow? The system is up to date with Windows 10 updates and it has been scanned with defender for viruses.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Has my laptop/windows 10 version been tampered with?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:35 AM PST

Today, someone that used to work at my workplace, who is an absolute genius but also supercreepy, brought his laptop back after a few years. The laptop looks an absolute mess, and instead of just giving the laptop back with all the necessary files, he completely removed everything on it, put the files on a USB-stick and brought the laptop back to fabric settings, meaning that we had to initiate windows 10 again. Although he said he had not used the laptop since he left (a few years ago), it was looking horrible, full of stains and scratches and some parts being broken. As i already mentioned, he is supersmart (also computer-related), but he left because he could't handle his perfectionism. Since he also has a superdark/shady side (experimenting with drugs, analysersoftware and probably other stuff too) I am really hesitant to use the stick and laptop he brought back (we have not seen him in all those years, because he totally ignored almost every email). He also said that there is only one language setting (our native language) and english is not an option. This all just triggers my distrust. I there any way to know if a version of windows 10 is tampered with? I'm just paranoïa about him spying on us. Or can I know if a stick is corrupted? I put the stick into the laptop and everything seemed fine, but I just want to be sure.

Worried about someone stealing my personal/financial information through Google Cloud Platform

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:32 AM PST

I'm a resident of Greenville, Michigan. A couple months back I had my Gmail account hacked into by some unknown entity. They somehow used it to bill my credit card through the Amazon Marketplace for a large purchase of over $600 (although they sent it to my address for some reason?).

I went through the turmoil of freezing my cards, changing all my passwords, and it seemed to stop after that. However, I just noticed this morning that there was a charge from something called Google Cloud Platform on another credit card of mine. I googled to see what this might be and I come to find that my Gmail account has been used to set up some kind of server or sharing program.

I already plan to change email addresses, as this one seems to be thoroughly stolen, but I'm just wondering if I should be taking any legal action from here? I'm not super tech-literate to understand what's going on with this cloud program, but perhaps it can be used to figure out who is stealing my information? Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated, Reddit.

    25mbps internet good?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:07 AM PST

As the title says will 25 Mbps Internet suffice for gaming? Everyone I asked on my discord said it would but maybe once or twice a month my ping will jump to 300-600 until I reset the box.

Comcast is the best for our area and are arguing the 150+ is the min for gaming. I'm currently on a 1 yr contract and I'm worried if I up my package I would have to extend my contract or cancel it to no contract pricing. I'm moving in Aug so getting another year contract would be out of the question.

Will activating windows wipe my PC?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:31 AM PST

Hi, I have a less than legit version of windows 10 running on my PC (probably for a couple of years now). I have the thing popped up in the corner saying I need to activate it. I would like to buy a key and activate it but what will this do to my computer/account? Do I need to get an external hard drive and back it up and will I need to put everything back on my computer after? Will it affect my logging into the PC/admin status? Also looks like I have to buy a USB or disc, and not able to just buy a key online. Sorry if stupid questions I know nothing about this someone else set up my computer for me

    Thanks

Something (probably explorer.exe) leading to 100% CPU usage on one core only

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:41 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

so recently I've stumbled upon fps problems in a game and searched for the issue, and in MSI Afterburner I could spot that one of my CPUs threads (CPU1) is at 100% usage constantly. The other CPU threads run around 1-10% usage at most. This is what it looks like. I notice my CPU fan running faster as well, it makes a louder noise when the usage is at 100%.

Now if that wasn't weird enough already: When I open the task manager, the CPU usage goes back to normal! (Around 3-4% on average) ...

Now I thought this might be a sneaky virus terminating itself when opening the task manager, so I ran a complete scan with Total AV (antivirus and antimalware program) and it didn't find anything.

To find the culprit, I installed processexplorer to watch my processes without opening task manager. Because it apparently terminates itself right after I open the task-manager, so this was my only option.

The only process that seems to be vanishing right after opening the task-manager is explorer.exe. Here is what it looks like without the task-manager, and here with the task-manager opened. The processes are sorted by CPU usage.

So I think it might be explorer.exe which is causing these problems, but I'm not a hundred percent sure. Any help appreciated. Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

Hello, I want to download a few videos from my learning management system.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:22 AM PST

I have been their student and I have a paid access to the videos for a year. However, I need to download around 10 of those videos because I feel as if I might forget those tricky concepts later on. Is there a way to download them? I have tried Internet download manager and a few others but none of them work on my Mac Os Yosemite. Thanks in advance!

    Wifi interference problems?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:15 AM PST

So, me and my brother play games a lot. To set the picture, our rooms are side by side, and we basically face each other when playing except for the wall that makes the division of the rooms. Our computers are connected to the internet via wifi.

For a long time, no problems happened. Even though a cable connection would be better, wifi always worked fine. However, starting 2 weeks ago we began to experience some serious lag every now and then. Lots of matches being disconnected from the game.

So I started to run some tests. A quick search on google got me to "tracert" and "ping" commands. Even made some seriously cool charts on google sheets. What the data showed is that 99% of the lag spikes happen internally, between my pc and the wifi router. Another thing I noticed is that whenever both of us are playing, these lag spikes become a lot more frequent, when I play by myself and he's not online I experience almost no problems with the connection.

So here I am. My knowlegde with computers is not that great, so next step should be looking for some tips you guys might have. I'm thinking this might be some sort of interference in the signal? maybe?

    Thanks.

How to get a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex drive to wake up every morning

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:36 PM PST

I run Windows 10 (currently 1803) under Boot Camp on a 2014 iMac. My two external drives are a Seagate Backup Plus (6TB) and an older Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex (3TB). For some time now, when I start the computer in the morning, the Backup Plus starts up with the computer, but I have to "jiggle" the power cord on the FreeAgent every morning (at the point where it enters the drive) to get it to wake up. Otherwise, Explorer just doesn't see the drive.

The drive never gets bumped. There does not seem any possibility that the cord moves at night.

Is there anything I can do to alleviate this problem and get the FreeAgent GoFlex to wake up without the hassle?

    Thank you for any help.

Windows 10 Bootloop - Can't access Safe Mode.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:06 AM PST

    Hi there,

I noticed my PC this morning was refusing to open LoL, so I decided to restart.

It's now stuck in a bootloop - I'm able to get to the log in screen, but it doesn't accept my password, just flashes and does nothing (and no, the password is absolutely not wrong). When I'm on the log in screen sharemouse.exe pops up with a warning error - and also my internet is disconnected.

I can't access Safe Mode through the power menu, because it's not there by default and I haven't activated it yet. So I'm locked out of my PC, without any way to restart it safely.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm on Windows 10, and when I boot into BIOS all my hardware displays correctly.

[Networking] Accessing raspberry PI that is behind NAT

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:58 AM PST

I have raspberry PI connected to my network at home. (192.168.1.X/24) My network is behind NAT, which is managed by my ISP. I do not have access to the NAT configuration. WAN IP of my router is 10.0.a.b This is internal address used by the ISP. When I go to whatsmyip.org, I learn that my public IP is 88.x.y.z

So as far as I know, the communication is: Raspberry(192.168...) --> (192.168...)MyRouter(10.0...) --> (10.0...)ISP NAT(88...) --> Internet Is there any way to access my Raspberry from outside of my home network (192.168...) when I do not have access to ISP hardware? (i have full control over the router at my home) I do not own any server with public IP to create reverse tunnel from there to my RPI.

Need help locating program on windows 10.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:57 AM PST

    As the title says.

I have BitTorrent installed on my laptop but I can't find it anywhere to uninstall. To use it I have to start a torrent download, it doesn't appear on my start menu, neither is it listed on the add or remove program page. It appears as though it isn't on the laptop when it is.

Edit: I've searched through my hard drive and it isn't in any of the program folders either.

    LVDS Cable macbook pro problem.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:57 AM PST

I am an idiot and I tried to tighten the loose hinge on my A1278 on my own which resulted in me probably not either inserting the display cable back correctly or damaging it. Either way after reassembly I noticed I had no audio and when I tried to reset the SMC and NVRAM and whatever, suddenly It doesn't even boot after the chime and I just get a blank screen. How fucked am I everyone? Have I shorted something?

Unstable HDR signal from PC to 4k Samsung TV????

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:55 AM PST

I'm at my whits end trying to figure this out

I am trying to pass a 4k/60hz/HDR signal from my computer to my TV using a newly purchased HDMI 2.0b cable. The HDMI is connected to my Gigabyte G1 GTX 1080 through 2.0b capable HDMI port, routed through a 30ft new HDMI 2.0b cable (link posted below), and connected to my 4K Samsung Q8FN TV (which all HDMI ports are 2.0b ready)

The cable passes normal 4k/60Hz signal just fine, but when I turn on the UHD HDR mode on my TV something weird happens. First, the TV just flat out doesn't recognize the signal. Second, my computer recognizes the signal but is unstable. It sort of freaks out and cycles between recognizing and not recognizing the TV at all. At this point I have minimal control of my mouse cursor because it constantly flickers between detection. (hard to explain, also the icons are switching between two different sizes during these spaz cycles). This all stops when I turn off the UHD HDR mode on my TV

Troubleshooting, I brought my PC closer to my TV and hooked it up via DVI, turned on UHD HDR mode, and was able to get it to pass a stable signal; however, this was only at a max resolution of 1080/ 60hz. I tried dropping the resolution via the HDMI route but still unstable signal

What could be wrong? Is the cable junky? Is the cable too long? All my drivers and windows are up to date.

    DSLR camera black line issue.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:09 PM PST

Sorry, not sure where else to post this.

I have a second-hand canon 77D, and something just happened.

I went to change my battery after using my camera to stream, and when I turned it back on, this black line showed up.

    https://i.imgur.com/9wlULqK.jpg

It's small, but noticeable, especially while using video.

    https://i.imgur.com/etm0LLw.jpg

The mirror is fine, I don't see any hairs. The line seems to be digital since it changes color depending on what I'm pointing at.

If anyone could tell me what it could be and what I could do to fix it, I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks for your time!

Edit: I was able to have the camera open up so I could see the sensor and I didn't notice any irregularities.

Edit 2: added a second picture

Tried installing this one (https://support.creative.com/downloads/download.aspx?nDownloadId=13599) but it gave me a BSOD. Any help is appreciated.

    Wireless Ear Buds not stereo?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:48 AM PST

Sorry if this is the wrong sub to post in but im honestly stumped. Just bought some iWorld Encore Wireless Ear Buds and charged them fully. Tried them and only the left side is working. And it's not even like it's a stereo sound, all of the sounds are coming through in mono on that one side.

In the manual it includes an email address that when I tried to mail, gave me a reply that basically said I'm not allowed to contact them because Im not on their specific contacts list.

    Any help would be appreciated

Windows 10 stuck in automatic repair and says cannot fix your system

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:47 AM PST

Hello my friend recently sent me a "vrius free" file which he uses and I've seen him use it but after I downloaded it I got flooded with pop ups and ads so I ran a Malwarebytes scan. I found over 400 malware (fucking scared out of my mind now) and deleted all of them while quickly looking through them to see if there was anything in them that I knew about/still wanted to keep (for some reason) but after I deleted all the malaware and restarted my PC, it would boot into automatic repair. It said it could not fix the problem and I tried multiple things like trying to reset my computer (wouldn't let me keep giving me an error) and system restore (said I was missing something like system32 config yikes) so if anyone can help I'd be greatly appreciated. I have the money to send it somewhere but I don't want to spend $100 dollars if I can fix it on my own. I'm worried to lose my files which I've had for over 4 years now. I also have a backup Windows 10 home disc that I will run tonight and I'll get back to you guys to see the progress. Any help right now will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Reddit hopefully we can fix this problem. (Yikes I wrote alot and it's probably not helpful sorry)
