Any advice in regards to internal SSDs for gaming laptops?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:16 AM PST

so i got myself this Asus gaming laptop a while back and regardless of the poor reviews, i've had no problems with it so far... apart from its absolutely terrible hard drive. I tried to put up with it for a while, and disabled all programs on startup to allow the HDD to catch up every time i switch it on, but i blew my bottle last night after waiting nearly 8 minutes literally for firefox to load. Worst harddrive i have ever had!

I literally had enough! I decided to look into the matter and found out that this laptop has a slot on the motherboard to clip in an internal SSD. Im really considering buying a 500gb SSD for the OS and 1 or 2 games and leave the HDD in for my movies and other media.

I was looking on Amazon and come across this SSD for a reasonably good price... but i'm a little suspicious about it's price point... it seems to be TOO good. There's different versions of the same SSD but they cost more i.e. "extreme performance and green performance" but i dont have a clue as to why they cost more and i dont know if im going to buy something that i shouldnt!

There's other internall SSDs on Amazon with 500gb but they all cost more. I really wanna buy the one i linked but im not sure if im going to buy a terrible SSD. its literally going to be there to run win10 and 2 games on steam.

can anyone tell me if this ssd is a good investment? if not, would you recommend something else around a similar price point?

    Thanks guys

EDIT: i forgot to mention! this HDD had windows 10 pre installed and the laptop doesn't have a disc drive! is there a way i can clone over windows 10 from my hard drive to the SSD if i was to buy it? is it a complicated process

    Thanks!

Hp probook 6550b vs AMD A6 Series

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** -fill here, remove dashes- *

Basic surfing, video playing. Maybe light gaming.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** -fill here, remove dashes- *

at worst some old indie 3d games

I'm looking at two used laptops and I wondered which would be an all around better recommendation. The are both around the same price. The first seems older but more powerful while the second seems newer.

    The first is

    HP ProBook 6550b - 15.6" - Core i5 460M - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - 4 GB RAM - 250 GB HDD Series

    in slightly modified config

    The second is

    External GPU’s and Laptops

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:41 PM PST

I'm a college student that likes to game, but needs a laptop for class. I really only need strong processing power when I'm back at my desk, playing games. So I was thinking, is there a 2 in 1 laptop out there that has solid specs, and external GPU compatibility? If so, would something like this be a plausible replacement for my desktop?

Trying to replace my laptop and buy a new one

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:32 PM PST

I'm thinking of buying this laptop but I don't know enough to know if it's a good deal. Price is in Canadian dollars. What do people on here think?

Here are two other ones I'm looking into. I know the HP is much more expensive and above the $500-600 price range I have, but it just looks like an amazing deal (to me and my limited knowledge). I'm open to any suggestions. Thank you. Here are the other two:

I am thinking about buying the top of the line XPS 15, change my mind?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:15 AM PST

I have no need for touchscreen that is why I'm eyeing the best specked non-touch version:

    8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Processor (9MB Cache, up to 4.1 GHz, 6 Cores); 32GB 2x16GB DDR4-2666MHz;
    1TB PCIe Solid State Drive; NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5; 15.6" FHD 1920 x 1080 Anti-Glare Non-touch IPS 100% sRGB 400-Nits display InfinityEdge

It is an expensive piece of machinery at 1950$ before tax (20% VAT or thereabout that I might be able to dodge), however I really like the design and I've so far had a fairly good experience with DELL, one of my older Inspirons lasted 5 years without a glitch and gave out when my brother overheated it (Would've probably lasted a lot more if we actually cleaned the poor thing). I currently have the buck for this type of bang, I also need a "luxury" item to showcase around on the seminars I'm attending, weight (sub 2kgs) is also a factor since it will spend most of its time on my back and I really am fond of my spine.

The point(s) of this post is:

    1. Could anyone who has this laptop please share their experience, any buyer's remorse?
    2. If anyone would suggest an equally powerful and well designed machine (Sub 2k $).

Cloning NVMe to another NVMe SSD in laptop

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:45 PM PST

I have a Legion Y530 with a very limited 120GB NVMe ssd as the boot drive, so I bought a 512GB one with the intention to replace it (since this laptop only has one NVMe slot). So here are my questions:

    1) How would I go about cloning the 120gb into my new and fancy 512gb NVMe? The laptop only has one NVMe slot, so I'm at a bit of a loss here.

    2) What happens if I were to just swap the ssds without cloning anything? Would I still have access to the Windows OS and other software that comes pre-installed with the laptop?

Any help would be welcome, thanks!

Recently I've been having this wierd problem where i get notification sounds while the lid is closed. Right after I heard it the most recent time I opened it and it greeted me with the windows 10 lock screen. I had been running windows before I closed the lid. Also yes I have it set to go to sleep when the lid closes. Any help would be appreciated!

Where to find "burst power throttling" on XTU to fix OVERPOWERED 15+ CPU power limit?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:44 AM PST

I recently bought a new laptop (OVERPOWERED 15+) which like a couple other laptops has an issue with limiting the i7-8750h to a certain power, which in this case is 35w. Multiple users over on r/LaptopDeals say that you can just turn "Burst Power Throttling" off and on which fixes the issue, and I'd at least like to try this solution before moving to other options. I installed XTU on the laptop and I can't find this setting, however. Can anyone provide some insight on this?

Link to the comment on r/LaptopDeals: https://www.reddit.com/r/LaptopDeals/comments/a73ihu/overpowered_gaming_laptop_15_2_year_warranty/ec1b9s3/

Posted a similar question in r/intel, wasn't sure which subreddit was more appropriate.

Laptop for video editing? USA $2000 USD

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:45 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Roughly $2000 USD, purchasing in USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Pretty important-- about an 8/10

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Importance of each:

    • Keyboard: 8/10

    • Reliable build quality: 9/10

    • All others listed: 0/10

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking for an all-around laptop, but the most resource-intensive task will be video editing. Other uses include audio recording (so I want it to be light and portable, but battery life is not important) and computer programming (Thunderbolt 3 would be nice so I can connect to external displays easily).

I've been eyeing out the Surface Book 2 for a while, but the lack of TB3 and USB-C made me want to wait to see what the SB3 might be like. I wanted a detachable 2-in-1, but now I think I just want a reliable, powerful laptop for video editing that has great value for the money. I'd be doing the editing at home, so a dock would be fine if it's better to go that way. The portability is more important for my other uses (audio recording and computer programming), whereas the power is more important for the video editing.

    Asus FX504GM with i7 8750H, GTX 1060

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:04 AM PST

I recently bought the Asus FX504GM with i7 8750H and GTX 1060 6GB with 120 Hz screen for gaming purposes. But the performance is no where near what a GTX 1060 is supposed to be performing. I had a GTX 1050 2GB laptop before which ran PUBG at 60-70 fps in low settings, so I thought the GTX 1060 would give much better fps. But it turns out it's giving around 60fps only. I have updated windows, GeForce drivers and even tried over clocking using MSI afterburner. There are videos on YouTube saying that it's probably cause of power throttling by Asus as a company to limit power to my GPU from 45 watts to 25 watts. I didn't know about this before the purchase and now I'm feeling distraught. I don't know what to do. Any kind of help or advice would be appreciated

Suggest a Thin and light laptop for Front End Development.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 05:35 AM PST

I'm currently using a HP 840G1 laptop and I'm planning to buy a new one. My requirements are

    1.Battery Life

2.Display (3:2 is preferred) but 16:10 will do.

3.Easy to carry around. anything below 3lbs(or 1.35kg), give or take few 100gm is fine.

    1. something below $1200.

I was considering Surface Laptop 2 and Huawei Matebook X Pro, but both have problems.

Surface Laptop being not upgradable or hard and expensive to repair vs Matebook's not so good build quality.

Another one is Macbook Pro 13 (8th Gen) (new Air 13 has low powered Processor) but concerned about that butterfly keys.

Also Dell XPS 13 was considered, but that 16:9 screen.

    Please suggest few options.

    lenovo ideapad 330s loud fan

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:05 PM PST

just got this laptop, the first few days it was fine, but now all I have is 3 chrome tabs open and the fan kicks on high and makes this god awful rattling noise. like a wobbling/cracking, as if something is loose. if I move the laptop to its side or shake it gently the noise lessens. I know pretty much nothing about computers; is this normal/okay and is there a way I can fix it?
