So the new semester is rolling up and I just got my textbooks. I was looking to find a laptop backpack able to carry 3 textbooks, a couple notebooks and a binder... while keeping the Asus tuf gaming FX504 series laptop protected and safe.

I want a portable and powerful gaming PC. I have no budget

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:04 AM PST

It's a little long winded to explain why I have no budget (pls no hate also lmao) but just keep that in mind as you read please.

I want a 15 inch laptop that can last me for the foreseeable future. I won't be buying it until the summer, so this may not be the best time to ask but eh what the heck

I would like it to have an 8th gen processor i7-8750H, i7-8850H or i9 is fine

I would like it to have an RTX card as well. I don't think the things I would use it for (video editing + programming) necessitate an RTX card, but because I know it's gonna be expensive no matter what ($3000+) I think it's a waste of money if it doesn't at least have an RTX 2060 in it.

I'm not much of a gamer, and am willing to trade refresh rate for resolution, so 4K 60Hz is an absolute must, no if's ands or buts

Basically I want a super powerful gaming PC, but I want it to be 4K with a slim form factor I'll consider some of the real gaming laptops, but basically anything in the range of the Alienware m15 is too thick (in both size and bezels)

As far as I'm concerned my only option is the Razer Blade 15 in the 4K touch option, but I'm guessing by the summer there will be other laptops (X1 extreme, XPS 15, etc) that have been outfitted with RTX cards, because as of now almost all other 4K gaming laptops come with 1050ti's which for a $3000 device is just not up to par with the latest tech.

The reason I'm so tentative about the Razer Blade 15 is because the spec'd out model only has 16 GB ram and 512 GB SSD, whereas something like the X1 Extreme has 32 GB ram and a 1TB SSD.

Again, I don't NEED an RTX card, but for $3000+ (which is what I'm expecting to pay because I want this to be my last laptop purchase for a while) it better have one godda**it😂

I've heard about the Gigabyte Aero 15 Y9, but it seems really sketchy so I'm crossing that one out for now (maybe by the summer it will be more mainstream)

So what are your thoughts beautiful people of reddit? Is the Razer Blade 15 the way to go? Or is there some hidden gem that I'm missing that I should look into?

buying a schoolwork laptop for my younger sister.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:48 PM PST

my sister's birthday is in a couple of days. as an older brother i realized she would need a laptop because she was tired of having to wait for me to end my league of legends game to be able to do her work on my gaming pc and as it is quite inefficient for her to go from her room to mine and wait for me to finish, i decided i should buy her a laptop to use for school and so on.

do you have any recommendations on which laptop to buy her, as i'm also trying not to completely break my budget here (350-500 euros).

    thanks a lot

Is it worth upgrading to an SSD on my machine?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:23 AM PST

I considered upgrading to an SSD because 128 and 250 GB ones aren't that expensive anymore and they should improve performance, especially bootup time and application launch time, which is a little slower than I'd like on this machine. However, I have determined that my laptop's motherboard only supports SATA 2, which is half the speed of SATA 3, meaning that I won't get the full benefit of even a SATA SSD. I think I have a spare mPCIe connector, but the BIOS doesn't support NVMe SSDs. AFAIK, you can use an NVMe SSD without BIOS support by having another drive that you boot from that contains the kernel and NVMe drivers, and putting the rest of the OS on the NVMe, but I don't want to do that because I think I'll need a few adapters and some glue to make it work. I also plan on getting a new laptop in 2.5 to 3 years, which will most likely come with its own SSD, rendering the one that I would have bought for this one redundant.

Given that my mobo only supports SATA 2 and I'll be getting a new machine in 2.5-3 years anyways, is it still worth getting an SSD?

    Newest Asus TUF?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:25 AM PST

I hear the tuf 504 has a bad screen and throttling issues and have looked high and low for reviews on the new tuf and have only seen the older models. Maybe I don't have much to compare it to but I feel like the screen is nice after doing color corrections. It no longer has a hybrid Hdd. I was getting sub 75 Temps while using unigine Valley for a bit

    https://www.microcenter.com/product/509542/tuf-fx504-156-gaming-laptop-computer---black

    Intel Core i7-8750H Processor 2.2GHz; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5; 16GB DDR4-2666 RAM; 1TB HDD+256GB SSD

Never owned a laptop. Was looking for a laptop mainly for web development/programming/UI design, has a nice keyboard and screen, with the ability to hook it up to a monitor. This one caught my eye at micro center first.

I don't plan on gaming much on it but I still wanted a beefy one.

I have some time to test it out before I choose to maybe switch it out for something else but so far I haven't had much of a complaint.

    Used laptop options?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:40 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I am looking to buy a good laptop with enough power to last me a number of years going forward. I was using a 13" Spectre x360 but found that it didn't output enough graphics performance to really satisfy my needs. I do some gaming as well as a lot of photo editing on Photoshop and Lightroom, so color accuracy and resolution are the two most important things to me. Please note that I am looking currently at the used market, so anything from 2014-2017 will do me well under $1000. I currently have a few options in mind:

    • Macbook Pro 13" (2015) - Cheaper option, I prefer using MacOS but greatly enjoy Windows so no issue with either OS; great ports (minus USB-C), portable, great screen and battery life, although no dedicated graphics option
    • Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013-2015) - More expensive MacOS option, great screen with dedicated graphics options; main negative being lack of support for 2013/2014 Nvidia drivers and AMD 2015 version pushing $1000
    • Dell XPS 15 (9550 preferable for the price point) - Port situation is by far the best for my needs, easy access to 960M graphics card as well as 4K display, probably my favorite windows option but any other ideas are welcome
    • Razer Blade 14" (2016) - Screen won't be as great as the other two, although theoretically I should get better performance from this one

If anyone has any other recommendations for laptops under $1000 used (or even new) then feel free to shout them out. Thank you all in advance!

Are $800 or more laptops worth it?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 02:22 PM PST

I just turned 18 and got a good amount of money for my 18th birthday. I am going to college next year and am looking for something to take notes on, study with, watch videos at night etc.. This will compliment my gaming PC I got a couple years ago so I don't need anything with a dedicated gpu. I have about $1000 in savings and don't know if I want to blow it all on a nice laptop. I am really concerned though that if I get a cheap laptop that I will just end up having to buy another one in a year or two or deal with it being laggy. I also want something that runs windows 10 with a 1080p(or better if possible) display.

    Thanks in advance.

Acer Nitro 5 or HP Pavilion

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:21 AM PST

This year I will begin with Computer Science studies, so I'm looking for a laptop. I've looked for suggestions and I got those 2 options:

    https://www.cyberport.de/?DEEP=1C24-63M&APID=6

    And

    https://www.cyberport.de/?DEEP=1C26-APU&APID=359&STOREID=2

What I could note is that both are almost the same, but the HP one has a SSD of 128gb but a gtx 1050Ti, and the Acer has a SSD of 256gb but a gtx 1050. My priority is not gaming, but I would like to play some games. These are the best offers I could find in Germany. Also, I don't know if this place is a good place to buy. I've read some reviews, but I'm still uncertain. Does anyone knows anything about it? Thanks a lot in advance.

Have an ancient gaming PC, need laptop for work. Anyone ever "upgrade" your PC to a laptop without regret?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:47 PM PST

Need a laptop for work that can handle some decent horsepower. This puts me into the $1300-1500ish range out of the gate.

Current I work on my desktop which does the job but it's running on hardware I've slowly upgraded since 2006, with the newest part being a 970 running on a 2500k processor. As fun as my cost effective upgrade era was, I'm definitely at the point in my life where I'm looking for a new build because I'm woefully behind on current hardware standards, and would rather not have to deal with lots of upgrading.

I don't game that much anymore, but occasionally would like to be able to play something current, especially if I manage to get back into gaming in a more serious way.

This got me thinking I should focus my upgrade path twords a gaming laptop. I need a laptop anyways that has decent power, and I'm willing to pay for high quality. Especially with how good it seems these laptops have gotten last year. The Razer blade in particular appeals with it's mix of professional looking, small footprint, and quality build (if you don't get a dud). Plus all the new rtx laptops that just came out - though I'm waiting for reviews on them before getting too invested in that idea. Just seems right now gaming laptops are finally hitting this sweet spot in performance, portability, quality.

But I don't want to regret my purchase. I worry about longevity mostly (I can under clock to help prevent this though right?). My partner uses Mac book that has lasted 6-8 years and I'd like to try and have this purchase do the same. I actually eyed MacBooks for this upgrade for their longevity, build quality, and general high performance outside games until I realized my program i use for work doesn't support Mac.

What do you all think? I know this is going to be biased against laptops here but I'd love to hear from folks who did a "new build" upgrade from a PC to a laptop, and if they regretted it or loved it. I just figure it would be more cost effective, sanity effective, and flexible to go this route instead of having to get a cheaper but still expensive laptop AND a new build (that I would only use for games, which I play infrequently).

    Zenbook Pro 14" UX480 VS Zenbook 15.6" UX533

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:21 PM PST

    Hello laptop-people! :)

I just bought a [Asus Zenbook Pro 14" UX480]. I'm happy with the laptop but im having second thoughts due to the newly released [Asus Zenbook 15.6" UX533FD]. Also, i was pretty sure the UX480 had a touch-display, which does not seem to be the case in the model i have received?

-They both seem to have very similar specifications such as GTX1050, i7-8565U, 16Gb RAM. Here in Norway right now they also seem to be on the same price-level.

    UX480:

    -32.3 cm x 22.5 cm x 1.79 cm.

    -1.6Kg

    UX533:

    -35,4 cm X 22,00cm x 1,79.

    -1,68Kg

I was hoping some of you could give me some advice. I am also strongly considering swapping the zenbook out for a 2-in-1 laptop, any thoughts on the Lenovo Yoga c930? Or the Zenbook Flip UX461?

    Thx on beforehand!:)

Curious if the Acer Aspire E15 can run a few games at least decently?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:16 PM PST

Leaning towards purchasing an Acer Aspire E 15, it looks like the best bang for your buck. My question is, will this laptop be able to play Blizzard games like WOW, Starcraft, Diablo, as well as the Total War series of games? Would I be able to download the games through Steam or would it be better to purchase the games separately?

I also enjoy games like Stronghold Crusader and American Conquest, I'm curious if the cheaper Acer Aspire 15 for $350;would be able to run those games.

Any other laptop suggestions around the same price range are welcome and any help is appreciated.
