Laptop to write a PhD thesis on Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:59 PM PST
I'm in Australia and have a preferred budget of 2500 AUD, but can go up to 3000 if there's a convincing enough argument.
Windows is my preference, but only because that's what I've always used. I would be interested in Mac or Linux if there is a convincing reason to switch for my use case.
I will occasionally need to use Mathematica, and I would like the option to do some light gaming on it. Things like emulation or indie titles like Celeste, Hollow Knight or A Hat in Time.
Windows hello support would also be ace, but again I'm not super fussed about having to type in a password. I don't need optical drives or sd card readers, but do need USB type c (so surface laptops are sadly a no-go for me). An upgradeable ssd is also a must, since I am going to be buying a second hand 1TB 970 evo from a friend who is replacing his desktop pc and would very much like to put that in the laptop.
As I mentioned in the last answer and in the title, I'll be using this laptop to write my PhD thesis. So I need it to both last a good 4 years and to be portable so I can easily take it with me to my university. Aesthetics are also important to me, and I prefer a clean design. I basically just don't want to be embarassed pulling the laptop out in a meeting with my supervisors or with one of my tutoring students. I have had my eye on the Huawei Matebook X Pro but I'm unsure if the i5 or i7 version would be better for me, and I'm not sure whether the keyboard is good enough. I would also like to hear some other alternatives anyway. Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Looking at the Acer Nitro 5 but would there be anything better for me in the same price bracket Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:36 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Australia, ~$700 cheaper the better (This is money I'd rather spent on pants, seriously I have like two pairs of pants left in total. Feelsbadman) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Moar power > anything else * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Again, MOAR POWER. My current laptop is an old MSI and it weighs... I dunno, but a lot. So I'm cool with bulk * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Bigger is better but I realise I'm going to take a downgrade for the price I have, I'd rather have a 4K monitor or something with a higher refreshrate or colour calibration than a larger screen, if possible. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Yup, I'm a film student and wannabe editor so I frequently run the entire Adobe Suite, AE and PP are the biggest hitters performance wise other than that its mostly PS and Illustrator. Gaming I'm pretty casual, Just esports stuff rather than AAA. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** In an ideal world I would like something better than a GTX1050 and an i5 but I don't have a lot of cash to throw around, and frankly while not amazing the specs are so much better than my almost 5 year old MSI. Looking for a small lightweight general use laptop Posted: 02 Jan 2019 06:04 PM PST
USA, no more than around $500 ideally, but $700 is max
specs, I guess. I have a 2 in 1 currently but never use tablet mode. I occasionally use the touchscreen but I wouldn't miss it.
windows
no more than 13 inch, prefer 11 inch
mostly no. ability to play some games would be a bonus but I have a gaming desktop so it's not a priority at all.
I could only see myself playing Crusader Kings II, stardew valley, and Age Of Empires 3 (aka lan parties lol) but again, the ability to play these is not a priority at all
I do a lot of video chat, so a front camera that isn't literally garbage is important, but my standards aren't high with the.
my #1 use for my laptop is for running my dungeons and dragons campaign (just a bunch of tabs open lol) and video chatting my partner. so I'm looking for something simple and cheap but still runs well. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for moderate (but not extreme) gaming. Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:45 AM PST
Canada. $500-$700. (Unfortunately today is the last day of Boxing Day sales, I didn't know I needed a laptop until yesterday evening, I get paid tomorrow, and I don't have enough time to transfer money from my savings account as it takes a business day.. Very ad timing.)
Best specs for the money. Use at work on home so never really rely on battery as I always have access to an outlet.
Doesn't matter. Not looking to go any larger than 15.6" screen, but otherwise not a priority.
Windows.
15-15.6" only.
Moderate gaming. I don't need to run any games on high but just want them to run smoothly and decently. I play more casually to pass time at work.
I have almost 500GB worth of games, some of the more larger/demanding ones being Ark, The Sims 3/4 as examples. I usually don't too many To compare the current laptop I've been using (was purchased for business not gaming), I run these games on a Dell. Intel Core i5-5200U @ 2.20GHz, 8GB ram, 64-bit, Intel HD Graphics (so basically nothing), and it's got 500GB HDD. It's probably 5 or so years old and was ~$800 range at the time, so What I'm looking for is: - i5 or better. AMD is fine too. - 8GB or more. Don't think I'd need anymore than 12. - 1TB HDD or SSD (but obviously my budget takes SSDs out of the running I believe) - Decent graphics card and an upgrade from the Intel HD.
A decent brand is important (I like Asus, Samsung, Dell, & HP personally). These might not be the best, but personal preference and what I usually buy. No touch screen or extras required, besides smaller things like bluetooth and 3.0 USB ports. I also have 5G internet at home and I'm not sure if there's any laptop in that range that can make use of the higher speeds.
I need this laptop by next week as I will no longer have access to my current. Today is the last day of sales so I'm kind of panicking. Some of my games are on Steam, but a lot are just on the laptop itself (including saves, etc) and I'm also wondering the best way to transfer almost 500GB to the new laptop. Thanks! Thinking about buying Inspiron 13-5000, anything I should know about? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:35 AM PST Will only be used for college work but it only has 4gb ram. Best gaming gaming laptop atleast 17''? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:48 PM PST I want to upgrade from my Alienware 17'' (2014 model) it still can run games well but it has a few issues and it would be more worth to buy a new one than to fix it. I want something with at least a 17'' screen as I can't downgrade from 17'' now XD. An OLED and keyboard lighting would be nice but not essential. Budget under $3000 AUD ($2000USD) [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Software Engineering Student Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:56 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* $1000-$1700 (Not set in stone, but a good benchmark) in the USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Best guess, not designed to play major games * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* reliable build quality is a high priority for me, SSD for Windows, not really interested in other features * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* I've been leaning toward the XPS 15, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I just saw the Huawei something or another that looks comparable, but I have no idea on the build quality of their laptops. Other than that, looking at an i7 (not sure which generation is best to suit my needs or clockspeed), 16gb ram, a light dedicated GPU, and an SSD to run windows with a supplemental (doesn't have to be huge) HDD for running everything else. I won't be storing an absurd amount of data on here. The largest things I'll have will more than likely be a few GBs, and if I ever need to upgrade this, I'll do that at a later date. 512GB is plenty big enough for me. edit: formatting [link] [comments] |
Laptop for coding, editing, gaming and for work Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:06 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: Up to USD $1500 or Php 80k, Philippines Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and the best specs within the budget. I'm also a midcore gamer. I usually play GTA V and horror games such as Outlast. How important is weight and thinness to you? Has to weigh probably under 3 or 4kg. I'll be using this laptop in school and at work, in the future. I'll be graduating this next semester. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer 15.6". A 120hz to 144hz screen would suffice. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do some photo and video editing as a side hobby. I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 for photo editing and Vegas Pro 15 for video editing. I'll be using the laptop mainly for programming and web development. I may also use the laptop for virtualization. I may also use the laptop for gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I usually play GTA V and some horror games such as Outlast and Evil Within. I don't usually play games that requires internet connectivity. I'm good with medium to high settings, though it might be beneficial if I can game on ultra settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A reliable, well-made and sturdy laptop with at least NVIDIA GTX 1050ti, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD or SSD, and an i7 8th Gen, probably 8750H, is good enough for me. Also, it might be beneficial if the laptop has good heat-dissipating mechanisms and can be easily configured and upgraded. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a capable and reliable laptop that can last for years to come. I'm also currently looking at Lenovo Legion Y530 and HP Omen 15, the 2018 version. Lenovo Legion Y530 has i7 8750H, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 2TB 5400 RPM + 16GB M.2 Optane and a 1050ti GPU priced at Php 78k or USD $1490. HP Omen 15, on the other hand, has i7 8750H, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 7200 RPM and a 1050 4GB GDDR5 GPU priced at Php 68k or USD $1300. Yeah, the price here is a bit higher than prices in US due to tax and probably, inflation. I'm considering these two since they are the only gaming and capable units available at the nearest gadget store. I'm open to other suggestions though I'm still a bit iffy about purchasing online but it's still an option. Any advice regarding these two laptops and other laptops are welcomed. Thanks in advance! absolute cheapest laptop I can use to run my steam library Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:26 AM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** US, I'd prefer to spend around $250-ish, max would be 350. If there is even a broken laptop that can still display and has working fans and ports, just without a working touchpad, keyboard, ect that's cheaper than $200 I would rather have that **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** best specifications above all else I prefer laptops less than 15" , but I understand that with my budget its mostly just what is out there. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** windows or Linux. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 12" would be amazing, but I know that's basically a dream at my budget * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** -fillgaming and small video editing * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** mostly fallout 4, bio shock, TF2 , and mad max 30fps medium-low settings **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** nope, I just need a dirt cheap laptop capable of running my games **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** like I said, I don't care about build quality, keyboard, screen, or almost anything. I need a laptop that can run most of my steam library. I mean, as long as it turns on and can display with all fans/ports working I don't even car if the touchpad is working or if the keyboard is in tact. I need the absolute cheapest laptop for the money [link] [comments] |

Looking for a budget friendly portable laptop to practice coding with Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:57 PM PST My goal for this year is to try to teach myself some coding skills in the downtime that I have at work to try and hopefully get onto a better career path. What I'm looking for are some options, preferably under $600 but I'd consider up to $1000 if its worthwhile, that are portable and easy to setup and put away when need be. If possible I'd like to get something smaller than the standard 15" I dont plan on gaming on it, I intend to primarily use it to practice some programming and coding, starting with python and then seeing where that takes me. 2 in 1 may be nice as well as I have numerous ebooks and digital reference material that may be easier to use in a tablet mode. I'm open to any suggestions or advice. My coding knowledge is pretty basic at the moment, but I'm wanting something that would be able to handle average programming needs. I'm in the US as well. Large difference in battery between Intel core i5 and i7? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:22 PM PST Getting a new laptop for school that I would be doing general school work on, programming, web surfing, entertainment, maybe some light gaming on. I want something that's going to last and not going to become obsolete quickly. I know that an 8th gen Intel core i5 with at least 12gb of ram would be more than enough for my needs, but if I jump up to an Intel core i7 my main concern is battery life since I've heard so many varying things. Is there really such a difference in battery life between the 2 processors to where I should go for the less powerful i5 so my laptop will last longer? [link] [comments] |

Need a new laptop, old one is from 2013 and it's starting to show. Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:57 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Norway, total budget around 14000 kroners (1600 dollars) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specification for the money and decent battery life. Don't care for 2-1. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Somewhat important, will carry it with my 5 days a week, but sturdiness is also important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows preferably * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-14 inches preferably. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
* **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good keyboard and quality build. Don't really care for fancy stuff like touch screen and fingerprint reader. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I want something reliable and not too heavy. Think up to around 2 kgs max. Gaming isn't very important for me, but I'd like to be able to play some easier games without overheating the laptop. I'm writing my master thesis in a year, and need a computer that is good to write on. I have been interested in "ASUS ZenBook Pure UX430UN 14" but when I've read about it I have become sceptical of the build quality and heating problems. I have also looked into the "thinkpad t480", but I'll only be able to get the lower spec options on this. PS: I found this computer at Finn, the Norwegian amazon. https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=135755022 It's a thinkpad x1 carbon 6g. The price seems good, but it comes without a receipt, so only way to claim guarantee if something is wrong will be through Lenovo, which I've heard can be a hassle. Also i've heard that this pc also has some heating issues. [link] [comments] |
Best Gtx 1070 Laptops with decent thermals? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:35 PM PST I've been looking for a long time but most of them are max-q or have alot of bad reviews saying they overheat alot and my budget is around 2000$ [link] [comments] |

Usage wise, I'm a college student looking for something to use for school and also play light games like various indie games and others like league of legends. I'm looking for a light enough laptop, with a thin bezel but can also handle some games (hence the mx150 in the provided laptop choices) The choices above seem to fit my need at a fairly low price, so I was wondering what you would prefer based on spec, and if you have a better recommendation around the same price, please let me know!
