Laptop to write a PhD thesis on

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:59 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

I'm in Australia and have a preferred budget of 2500 AUD, but can go up to 3000 if there's a convincing enough argument.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I'm not interested in a 2 in 1, but good battery life is important to me. I need to be able to get a full work day without charging, and would also strongly prefer USB type c charging.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important. I have a backpack that will also be filled with an iPad pro and usually 2 or more textbooks, so both size and weight are important variables to me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows is my preference, but only because that's what I've always used. I would be interested in Mac or Linux if there is a convincing reason to switch for my use case.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 or 14" is my preference. In terms of resolution, 1080p is the bare minimum.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will occasionally need to use Mathematica, and I would like the option to do some light gaming on it. Things like emulation or indie titles like Celeste, Hollow Knight or A Hat in Time.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      See above

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I really want a good keyboard. I will be writing my PhD thesis on this laptop so I want the keyboard to be pleasant to type on, and would prefer a large trackpad. A touch screen would also be great, but I'm not terribly attached to the idea.

Windows hello support would also be ace, but again I'm not super fussed about having to type in a password. I don't need optical drives or sd card readers, but do need USB type c (so surface laptops are sadly a no-go for me).

An upgradeable ssd is also a must, since I am going to be buying a second hand 1TB 970 evo from a friend who is replacing his desktop pc and would very much like to put that in the laptop.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

As I mentioned in the last answer and in the title, I'll be using this laptop to write my PhD thesis. So I need it to both last a good 4 years and to be portable so I can easily take it with me to my university. Aesthetics are also important to me, and I prefer a clean design. I basically just don't want to be embarassed pulling the laptop out in a meeting with my supervisors or with one of my tutoring students.

I have had my eye on the Huawei Matebook X Pro but I'm unsure if the i5 or i7 version would be better for me, and I'm not sure whether the keyboard is good enough. I would also like to hear some other alternatives anyway.

    Thanks for any help.

Looking at the Acer Nitro 5 but would there be anything better for me in the same price bracket

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:36 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Australia, ~$700 cheaper the better (This is money I'd rather spent on pants, seriously I have like two pairs of pants left in total. Feelsbadman)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Moar power > anything else

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Again, MOAR POWER. My current laptop is an old MSI and it weighs... I dunno, but a lot. So I'm cool with bulk

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

Bigger is better but I realise I'm going to take a downgrade for the price I have, I'd rather have a 4K monitor or something with a higher refreshrate or colour calibration than a larger screen, if possible.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Yup, I'm a film student and wannabe editor so I frequently run the entire Adobe Suite, AE and PP are the biggest hitters performance wise other than that its mostly PS and Illustrator.

Gaming I'm pretty casual, Just esports stuff rather than AAA.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

In an ideal world I would like something better than a GTX1050 and an i5 but I don't have a lot of cash to throw around, and frankly while not amazing the specs are so much better than my almost 5 year old MSI.

Looking for a small lightweight general use laptop

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 06:04 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

USA, no more than around $500 ideally, but $700 is max

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

specs, I guess. I have a 2 in 1 currently but never use tablet mode. I occasionally use the touchscreen but I wouldn't miss it.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I really want a small laptop. lightweight is preferred but size is more important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

no more than 13 inch, prefer 11 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

mostly no. ability to play some games would be a bonus but I have a gaming desktop so it's not a priority at all.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I could only see myself playing Crusader Kings II, stardew valley, and Age Of Empires 3 (aka lan parties lol) but again, the ability to play these is not a priority at all

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I do a lot of video chat, so a front camera that isn't literally garbage is important, but my standards aren't high with the.
my current laptops touchpad is horrendous and I hate it, so definitely want a decent touchpad. same deal for my current laptops wifi connection. it needs a dongle to connect to WiFi because the built in has never worked, so having working, built in WiFi is important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

my #1 use for my laptop is for running my dungeons and dragons campaign (just a bunch of tabs open lol) and video chatting my partner. so I'm looking for something simple and cheap but still runs well.

Looking for a laptop for moderate (but not extreme) gaming.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:45 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Canada. $500-$700. (Unfortunately today is the last day of Boxing Day sales, I didn't know I needed a laptop until yesterday evening, I get paid tomorrow, and I don't have enough time to transfer money from my savings account as it takes a business day.. Very ad timing.)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs for the money. Use at work on home so never really rely on battery as I always have access to an outlet.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Doesn't matter. Not looking to go any larger than 15.6" screen, but otherwise not a priority.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15-15.6" only.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Moderate gaming. I don't need to run any games on high but just want them to run smoothly and decently. I play more casually to pass time at work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I have almost 500GB worth of games, some of the more larger/demanding ones being Ark, The Sims 3/4 as examples. I usually don't too many

To compare the current laptop I've been using (was purchased for business not gaming), I run these games on a Dell. Intel Core i5-5200U @ 2.20GHz, 8GB ram, 64-bit, Intel HD Graphics (so basically nothing), and it's got 500GB HDD. It's probably 5 or so years old and was ~$800 range at the time, so

    What I'm looking for is:

    - i5 or better. AMD is fine too.

    - 8GB or more. Don't think I'd need anymore than 12.

    - 1TB HDD or SSD (but obviously my budget takes SSDs out of the running I believe)

    - Decent graphics card and an upgrade from the Intel HD.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A decent brand is important (I like Asus, Samsung, Dell, & HP personally). These might not be the best, but personal preference and what I usually buy. No touch screen or extras required, besides smaller things like bluetooth and 3.0 USB ports.

I also have 5G internet at home and I'm not sure if there's any laptop in that range that can make use of the higher speeds.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need this laptop by next week as I will no longer have access to my current. Today is the last day of sales so I'm kind of panicking. Some of my games are on Steam, but a lot are just on the laptop itself (including saves, etc) and I'm also wondering the best way to transfer almost 500GB to the new laptop.

    Thanks!

Thinking about buying Inspiron 13-5000, anything I should know about?

Best gaming gaming laptop atleast 17''?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:48 PM PST

I want to upgrade from my Alienware 17'' (2014 model) it still can run games well but it has a few issues and it would be more worth to buy a new one than to fix it.

I want something with at least a 17'' screen as I can't downgrade from 17'' now XD. An OLED and keyboard lighting would be nice but not essential.

    Laptop for Software Engineering Student

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:56 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

$1000-$1700 (Not set in stone, but a good benchmark) in the USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

Not concerned with 2 in 1, would prefer decent battery life, mid-high specs

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Moderately important, I don't want to carry a tank

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows 10

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15in or larger

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

Possible light CAD, mainly for programming, light gaming, maybe 4gb vram

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

Rocket League at 60? Best guess, not designed to play major games

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

reliable build quality is a high priority for me, SSD for Windows, not really interested in other features

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I've been leaning toward the XPS 15, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I just saw the Huawei something or another that looks comparable, but I have no idea on the build quality of their laptops. Other than that, looking at an i7 (not sure which generation is best to suit my needs or clockspeed), 16gb ram, a light dedicated GPU, and an SSD to run windows with a supplemental (doesn't have to be huge) HDD for running everything else. I won't be storing an absurd amount of data on here. The largest things I'll have will more than likely be a few GBs, and if I ever need to upgrade this, I'll do that at a later date. 512GB is plenty big enough for me.

Laptop for coding, editing, gaming and for work

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:06 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

Up to USD $1500 or Php 80k, Philippines

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life and the best specs within the budget. I'm also a midcore gamer. I usually play GTA V and horror games such as Outlast.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Has to weigh probably under 3 or 4kg. I'll be using this laptop in school and at work, in the future. I'll be graduating this next semester.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    I prefer 15.6". A 120hz to 144hz screen would suffice.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do some photo and video editing as a side hobby. I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 for photo editing and Vegas Pro 15 for video editing. I'll be using the laptop mainly for programming and web development. I may also use the laptop for virtualization. I may also use the laptop for gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I usually play GTA V and some horror games such as Outlast and Evil Within. I don't usually play games that requires internet connectivity. I'm good with medium to high settings, though it might be beneficial if I can game on ultra settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A reliable, well-made and sturdy laptop with at least NVIDIA GTX 1050ti, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD or SSD, and an i7 8th Gen, probably 8750H, is good enough for me. Also, it might be beneficial if the laptop has good heat-dissipating mechanisms and can be easily configured and upgraded.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking for a capable and reliable laptop that can last for years to come. I'm also currently looking at Lenovo Legion Y530 and HP Omen 15, the 2018 version. Lenovo Legion Y530 has i7 8750H, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 2TB 5400 RPM + 16GB M.2 Optane and a 1050ti GPU priced at Php 78k or USD $1490. HP Omen 15, on the other hand, has i7 8750H, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 7200 RPM and a 1050 4GB GDDR5 GPU priced at Php 68k or USD $1300. Yeah, the price here is a bit higher than prices in US due to tax and probably, inflation. I'm considering these two since they are the only gaming and capable units available at the nearest gadget store. I'm open to other suggestions though I'm still a bit iffy about purchasing online but it's still an option. Any advice regarding these two laptops and other laptops are welcomed. Thanks in advance!

absolute cheapest laptop I can use to run my steam library

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:26 AM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

US, I'd prefer to spend around $250-ish, max would be 350. If there is even a broken laptop that can still display and has working fans and ports, just without a working touchpad, keyboard, ect that's cheaper than $200 I would rather have that

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    best specifications above all else

I prefer laptops less than 15" , but I understand that with my budget its mostly just what is out there.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    windows or Linux.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

12" would be amazing, but I know that's basically a dream at my budget

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    -fillgaming and small video editing

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

mostly fallout 4, bio shock, TF2 , and mad max 30fps medium-low settings

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

nope, I just need a dirt cheap laptop capable of running my games

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

like I said, I don't care about build quality, keyboard, screen, or almost anything. I need a laptop that can run most of my steam library. I mean, as long as it turns on and can display with all fans/ports working I don't even car if the touchpad is working or if the keyboard is in tact. I need the absolute cheapest laptop for the money

The best 15.6" laptop money can buy. Budget is $5,500 or less, flexible. [USA]

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:04 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, $5,500, flexible

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Special request:

if building the best 15.6" laptop for under 5500 with the absolute best specs... BUT NOT MELTING, it seems to be the followin:

    9700K (9900K seems to melt/be too much)

GTX 1070 8GB (they do not offer the 1080 by default, i can request, should i, or will that 'melt/not work')

64GB 16x4 DDR RAM (2666 MHz is the highest Obsidian offers, should i request higher?)

4TB SSD 860 Evo Samsung Internal (not offered, have to custom request)

    screen question:

1 x Upgrade LCD to 4K IPS (non G-SYNC) -- would getting this as opposed to the basic 1080p screen slow down graphics? like wouldn't that make resolution extra high? ive also heard from D2 that it will make autozoom/scroll/cantrememberthephrase but it basically can be glitchy on high resolutions and no one wants that

    WiFi & Bluetooth:

Intel Wifi AC9260 vs Killer 1550 AC and Killer is said to be the more premium option, but user feedback says they've had issues with it

I'm basically building my ultimate dream laptop and im going to work to build a customized laptop with obsidian pc, so you tell me what you think is the higheset possible specs for a 15.6" laptop that doesn't melt or is literally unfunctionable (9900K) in the present technology of 2019/2k18

    https://shop.obsidian-pc.com/en/home/p751tm.html

im pretty sure i have it down about 90%, just want to run some things by y'all before i talk to the sales rep and all they see is $$$ i dont want it to be any like 'well you should've got that'

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Pro

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" non-negotiable

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes. But we're beyond that. Just getting the best stable possible laptop. Initial desire was for high-end audio editing but now I'm just treating myself to the best.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above answer.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? If you have anything you think would be killer, please suggest.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you.

Looking for a budget friendly portable laptop to practice coding with

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:57 PM PST

My goal for this year is to try to teach myself some coding skills in the downtime that I have at work to try and hopefully get onto a better career path.

What I'm looking for are some options, preferably under $600 but I'd consider up to $1000 if its worthwhile, that are portable and easy to setup and put away when need be. If possible I'd like to get something smaller than the standard 15" I dont plan on gaming on it, I intend to primarily use it to practice some programming and coding, starting with python and then seeing where that takes me. 2 in 1 may be nice as well as I have numerous ebooks and digital reference material that may be easier to use in a tablet mode.

I'm open to any suggestions or advice. My coding knowledge is pretty basic at the moment, but I'm wanting something that would be able to handle average programming needs.

I'm in the US as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Casual Gaming. From Hearthstone to Battlefield 1 on low.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and comfortable typing.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I got lucky some years ago and found this for $500.0. IT has served me well for 3-4 years. Ideally I'd like as close as possible to this but I'm not married to gaming as much as I was anymore. SO let me know.

    Thanks guys!

Large difference in battery between Intel core i5 and i7?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:22 PM PST

Getting a new laptop for school that I would be doing general school work on, programming, web surfing, entertainment, maybe some light gaming on. I want something that's going to last and not going to become obsolete quickly. I know that an 8th gen Intel core i5 with at least 12gb of ram would be more than enough for my needs, but if I jump up to an Intel core i7 my main concern is battery life since I've heard so many varying things. Is there really such a difference in battery life between the 2 processors to where I should go for the less powerful i5 so my laptop will last longer?

Looking for a good university laptop, with a side of casual gaming (e.g. League of Legends) and music production (DAWs such as FL Studio, Ableton, etc..), with no budget, in Australia.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:57 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: No budget, Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, good specifications. 2 in 1 is irrelevant.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be quite thin (for convenience/portability), but I'm understanding if it's not.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Previously a Mac user, but Windows 10 will do fine (I would have gone with the new MacBook Pro line of 2018 (I'm still considering it) but it seems to be facing a multitude of issues, including kernel panics, extreme thermal issues, and keyboard problems).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches at the minimum.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming/Music Production. As for gaming; very casual, mostly League of Legends. As for music production, probably a program like FL Studio or Ableton Live 10.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends. Settings I don't care too much for, but.. is 60FPS too much to ask for? Again, it's not a big problem.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Only thing I really care for is the build quality. A good keyboard wouldn't go amiss either.. considering the MacBook's..

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So, it'll mostly be used for university work (to the extent of the Microsoft Office Suite), but at other times I'd like to play League, as mentioned, and produce music. There is no budget, so take that for what it is - it doesn't need to be 'affordable'. I'm still in consideration of the MacBook Pro (15"), 2018 ver., but.. it's facing a riduculous amount of issues right now. Which is a shame, as that computer would have been perfect.

Need a new laptop, old one is from 2013 and it's starting to show.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:57 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Norway, total budget around 14000 kroners (1600 dollars)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specification for the money and decent battery life. Don't care for 2-1.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Somewhat important, will carry it with my 5 days a week, but sturdiness is also important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows preferably

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13-14 inches preferably.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    1. Light gaming: Hearthstone, Civ 6, maybe wow and lol(thought don't need to game these with highest setting if gaming). Haven't really gamed much the last couple of years.

    2. I use GiS and autocad sometimes, probably sketchup and indesign too. But we have powerful computers at the uni that handles the heaviest programs.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good keyboard and quality build. Don't really care for fancy stuff like touch screen and fingerprint reader.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I want something reliable and not too heavy. Think up to around 2 kgs max. Gaming isn't very important for me, but I'd like to be able to play some easier games without overheating the laptop. I'm writing my master thesis in a year, and need a computer that is good to write on. I have been interested in "ASUS ZenBook Pure UX430UN 14" but when I've read about it I have become sceptical of the build quality and heating problems. I have also looked into the "thinkpad t480", but I'll only be able to get the lower spec options on this.

PS: I found this computer at Finn, the Norwegian amazon. https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=135755022 It's a thinkpad x1 carbon 6g. The price seems good, but it comes without a receipt, so only way to claim guarantee if something is wrong will be through Lenovo, which I've heard can be a hassle. Also i've heard that this pc also has some heating issues.

    Can't decide on a laptop

can't decide on what laptop to get. Usage wise, I'm a college student looking for something to use for school and also play light games like various indie games and others like league of legends. I'm looking for a light enough laptop, with a thin bezel but can also handle some games (hence the mx150 in the provided laptop choices) The choices above seem to fit my need at a fairly low price, so I was wondering what you would prefer based on spec, and if you have a better recommendation around the same price, please let me know!

    Replacing An Underwhelming XPS15

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:24 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to $2,000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications and good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? A bit important. I do travel with my laptop a fair amount and would like it to be portable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably 15", but willing to go down to 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only game I'll be playing is MTG Arena

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, high build quality, preferably number pad, touch-screen is nice but not required

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Overall, I've been pretty disappointed with my 2015 XPS15, it's consistently overheating and throttling, despite not seemingly doing much. I love the form-factor and keyboard, the touch-screen is nice. The battery has puffed up in the past 2 years and it's made my trackpad unusable, which is particularly disappointing considering Dell's solution was nearly $400, despite being a known issue with these laptops. I guess I'd also like reliable customer service if that's possible.

    Thanks!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? a lighter laptop is important, but i'm willing to sacrifice here

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. linux, but if it has windows i can probably just put linux on it

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. mostly just programming

Laptop for Computer Science major and moderate gaming (GTX 1060)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:57 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $1500 USD, but less is better

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

No extreme "gamer" branding. Good battery and build quality are next priorities.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Doesn't need to be ultrabook levels of thin, but thinner is better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming and some lighter level stuff that doesn't really matter

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

AAA games at medium settings, 60 FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would like Thunderbolt, but the only real requirement is that the keyboard isn't ass. Also, I don't want my fan to sound like it's going into the atmosphere.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

TLDR: GTX 1060, without gamer branding, for around $1500 USD
