So long, Statistexts - another small dev exits Google Play (in aftermath of Call/SMS permissions debacle)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:27 AM PST

This article highlights the uncertainty facing developers on Google Play and the implications for roadmap visibility for small devs going forward.

This leads me and others to start asking some questions. What happens in the future? Will other permissions be removed later on? I'm currently working on a new application for creating notifications. Should I hesitate when adding new features if they will require new permissions? I'm not sure. I want to be able to build cool new things using existing permissions and know that they will be safe from this kind of thing in the future, but I think right now that's pretty hard to guarantee.

Google Play started off with small devs - you need devs to make an app store viable (ask Windows Mobile) - Google needed them, so mantra of "open" attracted them. Now Google Play revenues are dependent on ads, in-app revenue for large high-value games etc. Majority of ad space is used by high value game apps (where each user can pay back $0.40 on average) - this justifies paid installs (plus their organic multiplier effect) to be viable for them, and a virtual engine for more installs.

Thus for Google, these are the commercially visible face of apps - smaller app developers who have much lower return per app download are less important (paid installs have less payback, so they advertise less as well), and harder for Google to justify individual hand-holding. Even though small developers can do paid apps - and there is increasing appetite among android users for paid apps - however, this cannot compete with the high-value game apps. As a result tools apps etc. have less visibility/relevance for Google now - they contribute a miniscule of the installs, they don't really contribute to the ad revenue as much, and it is harder to individually devote a human to deal with them.

    Why Google is goofing up

Google's reliance on the big name apps has an Achille's heel - these apps are big enough that they could potentially move off Google Play altogether - witness the actions of Fortnite.

The foundations of Google Play store are built on the effort of small developers - it is these developers who have built out the niches and made the store viable. These developers are the ones who make Google Play more viable than say the Samsung Galaxy Store (which fewer people use for EXACTLY this reason - not ALL the apps you need are available there).

Yet Google is embarking on an exercise of burning these small developers - because the financial numbers suggest to them that they are less relevant than the big app names.

However, if tomorrow all the big name developers start distributing their apps outside Google Play, or worse they start moving to alternate app stores of the future, what will keep Google Play alive - it will be the small devs, the smaller apps.

With Google removing apps, there will be greater awareness among users that 10% of their important apps have to be installed from outside Google Play (making Google Play seem closer to what Samsung app store is now - incomplete). There will develop a greater willingness for users to go outside Google Play - this will naturally be used by alternate app stores - by Samsung, and by Huawei and others if they go into app store business (presenting a unified app store for China for non-chinese developers).

In summary, what distinguishes Google Play from all the other much smaller stores is the perception that any app you can think of will be available on Google Play. When that perception is broken, how will Google Play be any different from what Samsung App Store is now. The ONLY reason many users don't use Samsung App Store or Amazon App Store is because all their small apps they use are NOT ALWAYS available - so they don't bother to go there. Once a perception develops that many of the tools apps are not available on Google Play, that will start making Google Play look more like Samsung App Store.

When I read the official announcement that google is shutting down Inbox (by Gmail), I said goodbye and moved to the standard Gmail app. After a month of frustration, of knowing that my interaction with my emails can be so much easier, I deiced to ditch it and go back to Inbox.

Phone notifications on my Windows Laptop...?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:11 AM PST

What's the best way to get phone notifications pushed to my laptop (ie: text/MMS messages, Snapchat, Instagram, etc...)? Please do not recommend Pushbullet, I am not interested in paying a subscription (I would not mind paying though for a one time fee!). Thanks

    High Res Photo Camera

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:43 AM PST

Hello! I recently picked up a Note 9 and I'm looking for a high Res photo camera. To get a better idea, I'm basically looking for a hydra replacement. Here's what I'm talking about

    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/hydra-amazing-photography/id947824428?mt=8

The app takes about 40 pictures and stitches them together for a super high Res crisp image. I've searched the playstore but most of them are all rubbish. With descriptions like "high resolution HD hardware uploaded" etc. Would appreciate any suggestions! :D

Why are we lacking in the Android App Department?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:44 PM PST

    Hey Everyone,

as my title says.. and, forgive me if this isn't the "best" subreddit to post this in. Why are we lacking Quality and Good games with Android App Store.

The reason I am asking.. if, you look at our heathen brethren (IPhone / Apple Users) they get pretty good quality apps and games for the IPhone / Apple devices.. I:E; Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Civilization 5, e.t.c..

We kinda get crappy F2P / P2W games with tons of in-app purchases... and none of the above.

Most android phones are on the same level if not above performance wise to an IPhone (latest gen). Secondly, I heard people say.. Oh, because IPhones cost $700+ and they are willing to shove out more $$$.. I don't believe this is true at all. since, a good amount of Android Phones are going above $800 now and, the latest Note 9 is hitting close to the $1k mark.. not to mention I know quite a few people who are constantly spending megabucks on everything in the Playstore.

So, what is a "good" reason for good apps and games not coming to Android with only IPhone exclusivity??

    Notin alternatives with more functionality

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:18 AM PST

I like the idea of Notin, which lets you add a quick note to your notifications, but I wondered if there were any alternatives that also have a quick settings tile to write a new note and also let you move the note taking window around the screen, as Notin sometimes manages to cover up the very thing I want to note down!

I've used the note function in Shortcutter, but that's the only bit of the app I used, and you have to upgrade once you've written 10 notes (as in ever, not simultaneously).

Gallery App with Google Photos connection that isn't Google Photos?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:50 PM PST

Google Photos is the worst gallery app. No auto-sorting after being deleted from your device, album order is sorted by most used with no consistency, and picture order in albums is oldest to newest. Great for storage, horrible as gallery.

Are there any apps that can connect to Google Photos while I sell my soul to the devil in the hopes that Google will actually make good design decisions?

Is there a music app that sorts by folder then by filenames?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:28 PM PST

I'm sick of the music app randomise my playlist because it ignores the folder structure and sort all by filenames.

EDIT: Also, ideally ignores the meta data.
