Quick Guide - Purchasing a Laptop in Q4 2018/Q1 2019 Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:31 PM PST To help some of the individuals here with purchasing a new laptop, I figured I'd go ahead and just do a brief write-up of varying aspects of selecting a device in this day and age. The pointers here will be structured in no particular order, but all are at least somewhat important to consider. Tip #1: Benefits: Lower thermals means better longevity and internal integrity, as well as better performance (due to less thermal throttling/power throttling). There are no long-term negative effects associated with doing this; if you undervolt too aggressively, your laptop/device will blue-screen and reset to default, allowing you to lighten up on the voltage offset. Tip #2: Don't know if you need the i5-8250U or i7-8550U for your ultrabook? For average users, the i5 will be just fine. Both are quad-core hyperthreaded processors; the only major difference between the two is slightly faster clock speeds on the i7, and a slightly larger cache. So, unless you are planning to use your device for heavy CPU work (spreadsheets/rendering) or an eGPU solution, go with the i5-8250U if the price differential is large. Userbenchmark reports a mere 3% effective delta between the two. Benefits: Cost-savings on an otherwise unnecessary expenditure for the average user. Most users won't feel a significant difference between the two chips. Tip #3: Can't decide between a GTX 1070-MaxQ or GTX 1060 6GB for your latest gaming laptop? If your laptop has a 120/144Hz screen, go with the 1070 MaxQ unless you only plan on playing e-sports games. Most users should want to utilize their high refresh rate screen as much as possible before the GPU inside is outdated. Userbenchmark shows about a 27% performance differential between the two; so if the price to upgrade from a 1060 to 1070 MaxQ isn't overwhelmingly large, take this into consideration as well. Benefits: Self-explanatory. Helps the end-user make a price/performance ratio decision. Tip #4: Most users on here will tell you "Do not buy a laptop without an SSD." This is mostly true, but for individuals that are willing to YouTube some videos and install an SSD themselves, feel free to purchase a cheaper device and do the upgrade yourself. Just make sure the task isn't too tricky (inverted motherboards, 1000's of screws, etc.) before making the call. Most of the time, its a fairly simple process, and installing Windows on it thereafter is pretty easy with an installation media (USB drive, etc.) Benefits: Self-explanatory. Helps the end-user make a price/performance ratio decision, and place a value on the labor of installing a drive themselves versus a price premium of buying a higher-priced model. Tip #5: RAM is a tricky subject in 2018/2019. Many programs nowadays use quite a bit of it, many ultrabooks have soldered RAM (meaning you cannot upgrade it unless there is a free RAM slot), and is finally returning to normal-ish prices. For the average user, 8GB is plenty for basic/medium tasks. 16GB is a nice option if the model you are looking at has soldered RAM, as you won't be able to upgrade later if your needs from the device change, or you know you often have several programs/tabs open all the time. I would not go with a device that only has 4GB of RAM, as Windows 10 will use quite a bit of that to begin with. That's all I can think of for now, but feel free to ask questions and I will try to answer them promptly. Happy hunting, Reddit! [link] [comments]
Is there a big difference between these two Gaming laptops? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:47 PM PST I'm looking at these two versions of laptops. One with a regular 1080 and 6820HK: https://www.amazon.com/G701VI-XS72K-G-SYNC-Gaming-7th-Gen-Backlit/dp/B01N7TWAYC/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me= One with an 1080 OC and a 7820HK: https://www.amazon.com/G701VI-XS72K-G-SYNC-Gaming-7th-Gen-Backlit/dp/B01N7TWAYC/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=&th=1 Is there a big difference between these two setups? Are there any other laptops I should be looking into that are similar? I'm currently looking on Ebay for the non-OC version and am curious whether or not I should just get the one with a better processor and OC'ed 1080. Thank you very much. [link] [comments]
Which is best laptop for linux I can buy in 2018? Apart from the dell XPS line? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:24 PM PST Hi, I am a computational biologist and most of the stuff that I work on is using Debian or another flavor of linux. Although most of the stuff that I do is on a remote server I would still prefer a Linux or Unix operating system for my portable device. Can someone recommend one? I am looking for a laptop that can at least last for 4 years. [link] [comments]
Charge laptop without an original charger Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:19 PM PST I forgot the charger for my HP laptop in another city. I searched alternative ways and it says that it can be changed with phone or power bank. I tried that when the laptop turned off and it doesn't work. Any other methods? [link] [comments]

Dell laptop for running AutoCAD and similar software Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:18 AM PST Which of these two is better for running AutoCAD, Civil 3d, and the likes? I have a 17% discount since I'm an employee and would like to take advantage of the Cyber Week deals while they're active. Any other Dell branded recommendations? Thanks in advance. Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:15 AM PST I'm having trouble finding up to date failure rates/reliability reports, and the ones I do find don't include MSI. I recently purchased this Lenovo Legion Y7000, but this MSI GE63 Raider seems to have a little bit more bang for the buck due to its 120 Hz 100% sRGB screen. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:58 AM PST Hello I'm stuck between two laptops. They are both around the same price and they both have their pros and cons. I'm looking for a lightweight machine that can get some gaming in. Which is better? I'd hope for a laptop that can run fortnite and overwatch at medium at 60. Which would you recommend? Googling is getting me nowhere. Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:59 AM PST I'm on mobile so sorry about bad formatting blah blah blah. Straight to the point I need a laptop that has at least 8gb of ram and at least 512gb ssd. About £500 is what i can afford. It would also be nice for it not to look too bad and to not weigh a ton. Any recommendations? I'm sorry if I'm asking for too much for £500 [link] [comments]
Is it okay/safe to store a laptop in a cool/cold area? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:09 AM PST I just recently bought a new laptop and I've been keeping it in my closet when not in use. The closet, however, gets cold due to poor insulation. Is this safe or will this damage the laptop over time? [link] [comments]

Disk space keeps changing for no reason? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:26 AM PST Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I have somewhat of a problem with my laptop: The storage space keeps changing for no reason, for example yesterday I had 47GB free space, then on evening it was 46. When I was going to shut it off I checked again and it had jumped to 59GB. It has happened a few times before as well. Is this normal or do I have a virus or something? I don't want to download something and suddenly run out of space because it changes randomly. Any idea what's going on? Any help would be much appreciated! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:43 AM PST Bought it in August. Screen sucks way too bright. Battery broken, doesnt charge if only it was new. No command prompt which makes my work with python difficukt. The piece of dog shit doesnt even have flash(you think you can download flash player oh silly you Hell no). Not once in my life has flash player been that notoriously difficult to download, absolute failure also slow. The wierd thing is that suppose to support a game like Max Payne 3 pfffff, cant support adobe flash, also, why the hell do I have to close the browser during instillation and why doesnt it continue the download once I do. Also, what the fuck does restart browser mean you cunts. I understand restart the computer. I have never experinced such difficulty with download flash. What about pixlr, always easy to sign in but here oh fuck no, are you out of your mind. One more thing if you download something it doesnt show. So I noticed the free month of microsoft trial was over, it was installed but it didnt show. It was luck that I found that the free trial was successful. I plan to take this piece pile of dog fucking useless shit to the shop and tell them to throw it in that bitch company's face. It is Acer computer with AMD ryzen 2500U [link] [comments] |
