Quick Guide - Purchasing a Laptop in Q4 2018/Q1 2019 Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:51 PM PST To help some of the individuals here with purchasing a new laptop, I figured I'd go ahead and just do a brief write-up of varying aspects of selecting a device in this day and age. The pointers here will be structured in no particular order, but all are at least somewhat important to consider. Tip #1: Benefits: Lower thermals means better longevity and internal integrity, as well as better performance (due to less thermal throttling/power throttling). There are no long-term negative effects associated with doing this; if you undervolt too aggressively, your laptop/device will blue-screen and reset to default, allowing you to lighten up on the voltage offset. Tip #2: Don't know if you need the i5-8250U or i7-8550U for your ultrabook? For average users, the i5 will be just fine. Both are quad-core hyperthreaded processors; the only major difference between the two is slightly faster clock speeds on the i7, and a slightly larger cache. So, unless you are planning to use your device for heavy CPU work (spreadsheets/rendering) or an eGPU solution, go with the i5-8250U if the price differential is large. Userbenchmark reports a mere 3% effective delta between the two. Benefits: Cost-savings on an otherwise unnecessary expenditure for the average user. Most users won't feel a significant difference between the two chips. Tip #3: Can't decide between a GTX 1070-MaxQ or GTX 1060 6GB for your latest gaming laptop? If your laptop has a 120/144Hz screen, go with the 1070 MaxQ unless you only plan on playing e-sports games. Most users should want to utilize their high refresh rate screen as much as possible before the GPU inside is outdated. Userbenchmark shows about a 27% performance differential between the two; so if the price to upgrade from a 1060 to 1070 MaxQ isn't overwhelmingly large, take this into consideration as well. Benefits: Self-explanatory. Helps the end-user make a price/performance ratio decision. Tip #4: Most users on here will tell you "Do not buy a laptop without an SSD." This is mostly true, but for individuals that are willing to YouTube some videos and install an SSD themselves, feel free to purchase a cheaper device and do the upgrade yourself. Just make sure the task isn't too tricky (inverted motherboards, 1000's of screws, etc.) before making the call. Most of the time, its a fairly simple process, and installing Windows on it thereafter is pretty easy with an installation media (USB drive, etc.) Benefits: Self-explanatory. Helps the end-user make a price/performance ratio decision, and place a value on the labor of installing a drive themselves versus a price premium of buying a higher-priced model. Tip #5: RAM is a tricky subject in 2018/2019. Many programs nowadays use quite a bit of it, many ultrabooks have soldered RAM (meaning you cannot upgrade it unless there is a free RAM slot), and is finally returning to normal-ish prices. For the average user, 8GB is plenty for basic/medium tasks. 16GB is a nice option if the model you are looking at has soldered RAM, as you won't be able to upgrade later if your needs from the device change, or you know you often have several programs/tabs open all the time. I would not go with a device that only has 4GB of RAM, as Windows 10 will use quite a bit of that to begin with. That's all I can think of for now, but feel free to ask questions and I will try to answer them promptly. Happy hunting, Reddit! [link] [comments] |

US/$1500-2000
I don't care about a 2-in-1 form factor, but I would prefer a balance of specs and battery life.
Not particularly important, but it does need to hold up to some travel.
Windows
15-17
Matlab, GSAS-2, possibly CAD in the future, and some gaming
Dwarf Fortress, Paradox games (Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, etc.). I think medium settings for newer games is enough.
A HDMI and 2 USB ports are required.
I would prefer something with fairly good cooling. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2018 04:00 AM PST I'm currently using a MacBook air but the storage (128gb) is giving me problems and I'm looking to get a new laptop. I also like to do photoshop and drawing (so a pen would be preferred! Like, those laptops that let you write on the screen) on my free time, and during uni I take lecture notes on my laptop. Other than that, I use it for watching TV shows, using some messaging apps, and so on. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around $1000 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I want both, a good battery life and something worth the money. Also, preferably a pen! * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Pretty important, I usually carry my current laptop in a purse. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows or Mac * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13/14 inches or smaller please! * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, AutoCAD, some games like the Sims * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** the sims I guess, idk the fps * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Touch screen so I can write on it with a pen if possible (but not necessary) and I would love if it's snappy and doesn't lag / freeze * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I use my laptop a lot so I'd prefer a good snappy speed. Battery life doesn't need to be AMAZING, but at least good since I travel with it a lot. A thin laptop that fits in my purse would be great (current 13 inch MacBook air fits exactly but idk if I can go bigger than that width. As for weight, I don't mind if it's a little heavier than the Air) That's about it! Thank you so much!! [link] [comments] |

$1000 to $1500, Canada
Good battery life, performance over specs. No particular interest for 2 in 1, but wouldn't be opposed to trying it out. Money is not a huge issue, but always looking for a good deal and not looking to spend >1700 on this machine.
High importance, this machine will be the portable extension of my desktop machine.
Windows
13" to 14" (could also do 12")
Will be doing some (big) data processing & visualization but the machine will mainly be used to run MS Office apps & browsers. Light preference for 16GB RAM, but 8GB will do. No gaming or video card requirements.
N/A
Good build quality & input devices (even though this is partially subjective). Also needs solid audio & cam for video conferences. Definitely needs an SSD drive. 128GB might be sufficient, but I'd feel a lot safer with 256GB. In case the standard model only comes with 128GB, the drive definitely needs to be accessible/replaceable.
I have a high performance desktop machine and am looking for a thing lightweight laptop to work at external locations. I've had great experiences with DELL Latitudes but am looking for something smaller and mobile this time around. So far I've been looking at the XPS 13 & Huawei MateBook X Pro but both machines have their cams located at a very awkward spot which really kills the deal for me. At the moment I'm looking at the ASUS ZenBook UX430. Interested to hear what you guys think about that machine & hoping to get some more suggestions. [link] [comments] |
ASUS TUF FX504GM vs. MSI GP63 8RE-627 Posted: 04 Dec 2018 01:32 AM PST Hello, I wanna buy a new laptop and I've narrowed my choice to theese two. Looking at the specs, they look almost identical and they cost basically the same in my country. I was wandering if you guys can see any significant differences I've missed. Thanks in advance for any comments. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:40 PM PST i am so confused right now on which laptop to buy, i know exactly the specifications i want, but the options are still large because i dont know which brand is the best in terms of laptop build and thermal system, there are a lot of options. So does anyone have an idea which specific laptop/brand should i choose if i want the best cooling system? [link] [comments] |

Looking for a decent laptop for graphic design work and music production. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:10 PM PST US Budget: $500 Would prefer something on the lighter side, but anything beyond that isn't a deal breaker. Not really looking for anything too fancy, or to spend 1k on a macbook. Just want something that can get the job done. [link] [comments] |

Is there any better alternative for this laptop ? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 10:40 PM PST Hello guys, I'm from India and computer parts are hella expensive here. I am looking for a laptop that is good for gaming. from what I've find through little of my knowledge about computer I've found this one. Any reviews (thermals etc) are welcomed and sorry for bad English. It's Acer aspire 5 ryzen 2500U Acer Nitro 5 Ryzen 5 Quad Core - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) AN515-42 Gaming Laptop http://dl.flipkart.com/dl/acer-nitro-5-ryzen-quad-core-8-gb-1-tb-hdd-windows-10-home-4-gb-graphics-an515-42-gaming-laptop/p/itmf6h2pyfu3y28x?pid=COMF6H2PJAYPCFZ6&cmpid=product.share.pp [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:52 PM PST Hey, would you guys suggest a Y520 with 7700hq and 1060 6gb or a Y7000 with an 8750h and 1060 6gb. Will I get much better battery life and thermals with the 7700hq with only a small loss in speed compared to the 8750h? Also what about the Legions vs the Dell 7577/5587 ? All of them have the 1060 but I want to get the one which doesn't have abysmal battery life. And is it true that the Legions would have a better screen than the Dells? LASTLY, can someone tell me if I can shut off the GPU in all these laptops to save battery? [link] [comments] |
Macbook User Looking to make the switch(unfortunately) Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:42 PM PST I've currently got a mid 2012 macbook pro retina display laptop, unfortunately, its definitely showing its age and its becoming more of a day to day problem that I just don't want to deal with anymore. I currently run linux strictly on this machine which is why I cant and won't be upgrading to the newest macbook, their new T2 chip makes it impossible, so Its time for me to move on. What I'm looking for in a machine is at least 16gb of ram(I wouldn't mind 32), 500gb SSD should be more than enough as I've been running a 256gb for all these years with little problems doing so. The one thing that I've loved about my macbook is the stunning build quality, the keyboard is fantastic, the slim profile is amazing, and the retina display screen is wonderful. If anyones got any suggestions on something that can match what the macbook is and allow me to run linux feel free to leave me your suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it! [link] [comments] |

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I think best specifications for money is very important along with battery life. * How important is weight and thinness to you? semi important if it's a good laptop but isn't light and thin I would still purchase it but it would be better if it was thin and light. * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A The bigger the better 14" or 15" preferred.* Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be trying to start video editing on here most likely with Adobe after effects. * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard and build quality are on the top of my list and a fingerprint sensor would be nice. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a high school student so this doesn't have to be to powerful for that but I'm definitely going going to get into video editing and other than that this laptop will be used a lot and I mean a lot for YouTube, Netflix, spotify, Instagram, Twitter and reddit. * Thanks in advance! Graduating school, need laptop for programming / work, few options inside, help me pick one please! Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:09 PM PST Hi! I posted yesterday asking for some recommendations and got a few good ones. I am now trying to decide between several options and I don't know what is the best pick. My budget is around $1000-1200 and I will be purchasing in USA. I mostly need this for programming purposes, specifically need something that can run emulators (Android/IOS) quick and fast, has a good battery life, and option to dual boot to ubuntu. Here is what I am considering: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-t-series/ThinkPad-T580/ Upgraded: i7-8550U, 16gb RAM, 512GB SSD - $1220 https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-p/ThinkPad-P52s Upgraded: i7-8550U, 16gb RAM, 512GB SSD - $1335 https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-e-series/ThinkPad-E580 Upgraded: i7-8550U, 16gb RAM, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD - $1016 (Could do 512GB SSD for another $200) https://www.razer.com/c/Refurbished-Razer-Blade-Stealth-H4/p/RZ09-02393E32-REFB REFURBISHED - I7-8550U, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, sexy af. - $1199 (Is razer refurb reliable? I love this thing but being refurb makes me a little uneasy) These all basically have the same specs so I am really struggling with which one I should go with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Looking to purchase tonight/tomorrow. [link] [comments] |

Workhorse with moderate gaming suggestions Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:34 PM PST My desktop was old and has died so I'm looking to replace it with a laptop. I'm looking for a good, all around machine that games well but does not have to be the best of the best.
Thanks in advance to those taking the time to leave feedback, both in this thread and for others that come to the subreddit looking for help. [link] [comments] |
Is now a good time to buy a gaming laptop? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:58 PM PST Hi everyone. I'm currently torn between Aero 15X (which I've heard has QC issues), HP Omen 17t with 1070 (heat management), Zephyrus S and M models (each with their own issues, albeit both have great thermals), and a few others. All with GTX 1070 but each with its own issues. I just saw GizmoSlipTech's recently released video about not buying a gaming laptop right now and was wondering what are your thoughts about it? He seems to make a fairly reasonable point of prices being bad at the moment, with the new RTX gen for laptops being 1-2months away. I just wouldn't like to purchase a laptop right now that could be severely discounted for stock clearing in a month or two (since I intend this laptop to last me about 4 or 5 years) or that would cost the same as the ones from the upcoming generation. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
