    Something for work and studies

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:01 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Cheap. Preferably under $700, but could stretch a bit.*

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life. *

How important is weight and thinness to you? Under 2kgs would be good*

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows*

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd like a numpad, but as small as possible *

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Probably just office apps and web browsing *

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As mentioned, I'll be doing work with numbers at times so I'll need a numpad keyboard. But it doesn't need to be particularly high spec, just light with decent battery life, and Microsoft office home and business if available as a set deal would be great

2 in 1 for illustrating purposes?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:08 AM PST

Hello, I am in Australia and looking for a new laptop for graphic design.

My budget is around $1000 but I can probably go higher if I need to.

I create detailed illustrations mainly on Photoshop so am looking for either a 2 in 1 laptop with a very good pen/drawing experience or a normal laptop that runs adobe software well (mainly Photoshop) and getting a wacom tablet to use as an add on.

I basically want to know if the drawing experience on 2 in 1 laptops can be as good as the tablets designed specifically for that purpose.

It would be good if the laptop can handle light gaming but not essential.

I don't care too much about weight or battery because I mainly work from home but it still needs to be portable so that I can work elsewhere if I need to.

    Thank you in advance :)

Looking for 2nd laptop to use as a heavy, large laptop 17 inch laptop for home

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA - Absolute Max Budget $2000

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** It will mainly stay of my table at home, so mainly best specs for money.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not particuarly important: I dont plan to take it around with me regularly.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Preferably 17 inch

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I plant to do regular gaming on it.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** My game roster changes regularly but I can say I want to play AAA games at decent framerates on high settings

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I care a lot about screen quality. One of the biggest things for me is brightness and colour coverage. I also like good build quality but that is less important than screen. Trackpad is a non-factor because I would use a mouse anyway but a good keyboard would be nice.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I already have a surface laptop, and I am happy with it, but I need something with a bit more horsepower for home. The reason I need 2 laptops rather than a desktop and a laptop is I have a weird situation where I spend about 6 months a year in a house in the USA and 6 months in the UK, and I don't want to have to buy 2 desktops instead of a bigger laptop.

Looking for a good video editing portable workstation in Italy with a budget of maximum 1200€

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:15 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Italy. Maximum budget 1200 €.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Definitely best specifications. I will be editing on the move, but I hope to find at least a coffee shop with a plug socket in any main city.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat important. I need to move it around, but I would definitely okay with more weight if it means higher specs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Over 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The software I use the most are Adobe Premiere, some basic After Effects, Lightroom, and I am starting to experiment with AutoCAD and GIS software (AutoCAD MAP 3D mostly for now).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I like to game, but this is not the primary porpouse of this workstation.

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I am not very picky about this. I can adapt to everything, as long as it renders at a decent speed.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My job involves filming, moving and editing on the go. I am looking for a reasonably powerful workstation that can follow me around the globe, but with enough horsepower to put together high-quality audiovisual content without having to rent a machine on the spot.

Within my budget, I was looking at an Asus Vivobook Pro N580GD-E4087T, but I would like to hear what other bells says.

Hello, I am majoring in Computer Science in college, would it be a dumb move to get a macbook?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:16 PM PST

I will be taking the class next semester (my second) and I am going to ask for a laptop for christmas. My question is, would it be a good/bad idea for me to ask for a macbook? Would I be able to use a macbook for a computer science class/throughout the course of my degree? I want to eventually hone in to software engineering. Does it matter what kind of laptop I have? Will I at some point NEED to have a windows computer? I've just always used apple products so a macbook is what I am most familiar with. Thanks!

Need a laptop with the least amount of compromise as possible ..

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:05 AM PST

    -2,500

-Prefer a laptop that I can use on my lap comfortably and portable, good performance and 8 hours of use

    - Under 5 pounds, around .7 mm thick max

    - I have a iphone, apple watch, and airpods so I think mac os for continuity but I don't really care too much

    - Bigger is better but am considering 13 "

    - No. My biggest thing is research( 30 chromes tabs), data compilation (excel, python, SQL, VM), Office products (Word), at the same time with imessage if on a Mac

    - Biggest thing is that I need it to have a really good wifi card, work without any screen flex on my lap (in chair, in bed, etc.), a good touchpad because I honestly won't hook up anything to this computer other than a power chord

-I really need something with no lag what so ever at any point and am willing to pay the premium for the processor. I currently have a massive i7-6700HQ laptop with a GTX 970M so I don't really need a machine to game on. My last mobile laptop was a fully decked out 2013 MBP that I felt like was starting to stutter here and there and wasn't going as fast as I needed it to. I also don't need more than 256 gigs. I don't edit video or photos or anything.

Looking For Decent 2-in-1 Laptop (USA w/$

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:27 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    <$1,500, USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

The best specifications for the money. Having a 2-in-1 would be a huge plus

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Nothing too heavy and clunky. I'll be carrying it around for long periods of times.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Photo editing, video editing, and light/casual gaming. Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Doesn't matter too much, just as long as it doesn't lag too badly when I'm playing games like DoTA and CS:GO. I'm actually trying to quit gaming or just leave it at a minimum.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A good keyboard/input devices and a touchscreen would be nice.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I was initially thinking about buying the Surface Pro 6, but given what I'm looking for, not sure if it's the best choice. Main reason as to getting a 2-in-1 is for easy note-taking and scribbling.

Need help finding a laptop for my wife

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:03 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US: $400 preferred/$600 max

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, she can't seem to stay in one spot around the house.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very. Less than 4 pounds preferably.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. She loves Macs, but we're cheap bastards. Chrome or Windows is fine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. She draws often using an art tablet hooked to her laptop. Unsure of software she uses, but it's mostly line work and not super detailed painting/drawing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and a comfortable keyboard/touchpad are very important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. She is a social science grad student, so this will mostly be for writing, browsing, and streaming. Comfortability is what she cares most for in a laptop, but I also don't want to get a barebone laptop specs-wise that can barely handle its functions if ya know what I mean.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for a good all-around laptop (good for gaming, watching videos, and recreational purposes)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:03 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 - $2000, Canada
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would love to have a 2-in-1 form factor. If not, I can settle with good battery life or best specifications!
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I wouldn't mind a fairly hefty laptop, as long as it is thin.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for sure.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I am looking for a screen size of either 14 or 15 inches. Nothing lower, but may consider something higher.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will mainly be doing gaming and programming, with video editing and photo editing on the side. If the laptop recommended isn't as fast for video or photo editing, I will be okay with that.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? My main game will be League of Legends. Other games I might play are GTA V, Hitman, Battlefield, and others. I would like to play them at high, and would want between 80 and 144 FPS.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It would be nice to have a laptop that feels high quality. I will be using a mouse for at-home purposes, so I don't mind a bad track-pad. If it is possible, I would like to have a 144 HZ 1440p screen. I can settle with 144 HZ 1080p, but I prefer 144 HZ 1440p.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am new to the laptop scene. I've been with a PC for quite some time, and am going to university by the end of next year. My experience with PC has been great, but now I would love for it to be portable, and nice looking. I will be using the laptop for coding, gaming, watching videos, and for other purposes. I will be selling my desktop, so I can settle on getting a laptop that is coming out next year, since it may take a while to sell my current one. My current PC has a GTX 1070 and a Ryzen 5 1600, so something similar to those specs would be wonderful! (If the laptop is more expensive than my budget, I can look for used laptops, I would not mind!)

Asus Zenbook 14 or Lenovo T480 Thinkpad

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:11 PM PST

    Biggest things I'm concerned with are - Durability & Longevity > speed > screen/sound > battery life.

Needed for graduate school, entertainment and field work-ish programs like Rcode and ArcGlobe/GIS. Basically nothing with crazy requirements, but lots of data and photo/video sifting. I would very much like a touchpad, but a nice screen is just as important. Half the time I'll have it hooked up to an external monitor/keyboard, so neither of those really matter when it's being used at home.

I'm looking at the newish Zenbook 14 for $1100 after tax and w/ amazon discount - No touchscreen and no dedicated graphics. Sexy screen and great specs. I'm sure I won't be using them any time soon as full capacity, but I like knowing it will stay relevant longer than not. Also doesn't have an Anti-glare screen, wondering what the difference would look like

    • 14-Inch wide-view Full HD 4-way nano-edge bezel display
    • Latest 8th generation Intel Core i7-8565U Quad Core Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.6 GHz)
    • Fast storage and memory featuring 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and16GB LPDDR3 RAM
    • Exclusive ErgoLift design for improved typing position, optimized cooling system and enhanced audio performance
    • Built-in IR camera for facial recognition sign in with Windows Hello
    • Exclusive dual-function touchpad: a touchpad with switchable numeric keypad for immediate data entry
    • Extensive connectivity with HDMI/USB Type C, Gigabit-class Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0 and Micro SD card reader
    • Sleek and lightweight 2.6 lbs for comfortable portability. Carry sleeve and USB3.0 to RJ45 cable included
    • MIL-STD 810G military standard for reliability and durability

Was also wondering why these two models are such more cheaper/more expensive considering the differences UX410UA and Zenbook 13 UX331UA (which really seems like the best deal, but was looking for a bigger screen. Is the difference in a 13 and 14 that big? I've only ever used the 15.6)

Specced a T480 down to $890 using a corporate code : Absolutely hate the look of this, MOSTLY the red nub on the keyboard. Atleast the T480s has a silver option, but specced about $50-100 more just for the model.

Has a touchscreen, less ram but DDR4 instead of 3. Less HD space but same specs. i5 instead of i7, which honestly the difference doesnt seem crazy. Has a cylindrical 72W battery added. Can upgrade and customize each particular component for around $50-100

How do the Ideapads compare to the Thinkpad 720s (14), because I like the look more and this has similar speccs for about $750, plus it has a MX150...just in case I wanna do something graphics related. Plus it has no keyboard NUB! My laptop that just died was an older Ideapad 15.6 inch. I liked the design and feel of it a bit, but the plastic parts started to break and it slowed down considerably over time.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but looking for a suggestion on these specific models, or anything you think would be an equivalent purchase within the ranges. I also looked at the Swift 3 but I have real hard time trusting anything from Acer.

Looking for a laptop around ~$500 usd, can be Windows or ChromeOS but would like good build quality, lightweight and preferably stylus compatability

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:48 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally I'd like to keep it as close to ~$500 USD, however, I wouldn't mind buying slightly used/refurbished models to get a deal on a good one for cheaper

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like something thin and light, I have been spoiled by my Macbook 2011

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac I'm used to, I would be open to trying Chrome OS though seems fun! But if I do I would want one that could run Android Apps pretty well, I think that would get me a lot of use out of it for some games since I can't run something like Steam.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not in particual, I guess nothing over 14" and nothing smaller than 11 or 12" though, I want to maintain a decent size for portability

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Everynow and then I use my current laptop for quick photo touchups from my DSLR in Photoshop but nothing too crazy. I figure I could use PS Online or some alternative to do the same. No video editing whats so ever. Gaming would be great but I don't need a AAA experience at all, I do have a gaming PC, and if I ever did game on the laptop it would be once in a while whenever I'm flying or something

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Something like Diablo or Pillars of Eternity, don't need AAA 60fps experience. Just wanna be able to hold myself over with something if I ever find myself in a pinch or stuck/bored.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like something with nice build quality. Coming from a Macbook I really adore it's design. Mine has held up very well over the years. The last time I had a windows laptop it was a less than stellar plastic HP that left a sour taste in my mind so I don't want to go through that again! lol

A touchscreen/stylus compatibility would be really ideal. I love to draw and I think I would get a lot of use from digital drawing. I don't need an optical drive. Would like a nice keyboard and touchpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Can't think of anything right now

Looking for a detachable for digital art and general use

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 04:04 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $750-850 USD, United States.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer 2 in 1 and best specifications, battery life isn't very important to me.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything above 12"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm doing digital art and photo editing with programs such as Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Autodesk Sketchbook
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Next to nothing, If anything maybe osu! and Hearthstone at above 60 FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent pen and touch-screen input as I'll be primarily using it for art on the go and reliable build quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This purchase is mainly for something that I can use for art on the go as I don't have a laptop and I'll be selling my desktop. I've been looking at the Surface Pro 6 bundle, it falls a bit below my budget at about $770 USD but I'm uncertain If I should pull the trigger on it because of It's lack of USB-C and general ports though USB-C isn't particularly important for me as I have no devices/dongles that make use of It and I'm fine with buying dongles in the future for the Surface. If buying the Surface, I'd be opting for the model with the i5, 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD w/ a type cover. In searching around, I saw the Acer Switch Alpha 12 on Amazon for $717 but since I'm almost completely new to the laptop market I have no idea If I should opt for this over the Surface or any other device within my budget though I do notice It has USB-C. Apologies for any mistakes made, new to Reddit and English isn't my native language.
Edit - Looked around a bit more and saw this on the MS Store, looks pretty decent compared to my other previous options but is clearly a bit heavier which may not be ideal for me as I'll be using it for travel and leisure as well. It seems to have some advantages like bigger SSD but also some drawbacks like lower res. screen, still uncertain as to which to pick!

Reliability and longevity in Macbook vs Windows

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:39 PM PST

    Hey!

I'd like to receive some advice from you wise folks out here. I can't choose between the following:

    • Matebook X Pro (base model)

    • Surface Laptop 2 (base model)

    • Macbook Pro 2017 (base model)

    • Macbook Air

    • Dell XPS 13 (i5)

I've never owned a Mac, but I'm tired of having to reset my laggy-ass windows laptops after a year or two every time, so I'm open to macs this time around too.

In your opinion, which would be the most reliable of the bunch? I'm looking for something that can last me a few years without blue screening or becoming laggy.

Thanks in advance for your help!

EDIT: For reference, I've owned a Surface Pro and Surface Pro 4, I love how tiny they are but they inevitably dissapoint me after 2 or 3 years.

    Sub-£1000 Gaming Laptop (UK).

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 04:58 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

      £1000, United Kingdom.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs for the money, not interested in 2 in 1, good battery would be nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Reasonably as it will be have to be carried to and from university classes.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13" at the least.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Specs for games currently on the market at atleast low settings. Minor multi-tasking, able to have programs in the background.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

League of Legends (Medium to High), Overwatch (Low to Medium), CSGO (Low to Medium), Rainbow Six Siege (Low to Medium). Preferably the strongest possible that you can get in the price range.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good build quality, enough USB ports leftover when using peripherals, SSD (preferably), a decent keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is for a friend. I realise that this is r/suggestalaptop but if anyone could give thoughts on whether a gaming pc and lighter laptop would be better for the price range or not then thank you in advance.

    How good is this laptop?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:17 PM PST

    HP Pavilion Gaming i7 8750H (6 cores, up to 4.1GHz) 8GB 2666MHz 128GB SSD + 1TB 7200rpm HDD GTX 1060 Max Q 3GB FHD IPS

The design is pretty slick and I'm on a 1000$ budget, so I find this one within the bounds. But is the 1060 Max Q 3GB a good upgrade over the 4GB 1050Ti? It's a 190$ difference between this config and 1050Ti + i5 8500H and an 80$ difference with the 1050Ti + i7 8750 config. Which one is the best bang for buck?

    Thanks
