    Simple Questions - November 30, 2018

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Nephew is in for a nice birthday surprise

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:45 AM PST

My nephew is turning 18 tomorrow, my sister lives far and we hardly ever get to visit. I thought to make up for not being there for birthdays and what not I would build him a gaming rig and ship it in time for his birthday.

He grew up playing console games but always showed interest in PC gaming. So here's what I was able to put together from deals I found the past couple of weeks.

The prices are not what I paid, I was too lazy to change them all :)

(Sorry for the bad picture, I ended up taking more video than anything)

    https://pcpartpicker.com/b/wmvnTW

Edit: Thanks for all the cool comments, as for the comments suggesting upgrades to the build, I sort of went 90% of the way with this build because I wanted him to have obvious and semi easy components to upgrade, hopefully he becomes more technically savvy from needing to do research and getting his hands dirty.

Edit: Thanks for the silver! As I said on my reply, I've been lurking reddit for a couple of years, this makes me feel like I'm part of the club :D

Im really happy how it turned out, used aluminum treadplate, 2mm thick, and painted it black.

How long should my PC take to boot with an SSD? It takes 22 seconds to boot up. Is that normal?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:24 AM PST

Finished building my pc yesterday and noticed my samsung 860 evo 1tb is taking a bit to boot up? Is a 22 second boot time normal? Ive seen that people can boot their pc in 8-9 seconds? How?

It shows the asus rog logo when I boot up and then loads windows.

Edit 1: here is what my boot settings look like in the BIOS https://imgur.com/gallery/LSBkQYI

Edit 2: After running a benchmark to test my SSD it says it is running great. Something else seems to be the issue instead of the ssd?

Edit 3: MOBO is an Asus X470-F

Edit 4: For people who boot in 8 seconds, are you timing from the moment you press the power button?

    Vega 64 buyers regret.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:01 PM PST

Recently purchased the Sapphire Vega 64 reference and I've been enjoying it, but I was expecting more coming from a gtx 970. Did I make the wrong call thinking this was a big upgrade? On top of that it's been a headache trying to get the card to maximize performance in the form of undervolt/overclock despite how easy everyone seems to do it / say it can be done. Underwhelming I suppose is the best way to put it. I don't believe returning is an option as it was purchased through eBay, however I imagine that if I needed to I could sell it off at minimal loss. Another deciding factor is that my freesync monitor seems to have issues with intermittently getting black screens for 2-3 seconds which is very annoying. Is it possible I'm bottlenecking super hard with a 3570k@4.4? Sorry this post was word salad I'm just stressing because it was a good bit of cash and i bought it on a whim because of the praise of it being a very good deal.

    i9 9900k dropped on carpet???

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:46 PM PST

I recently got an i9 9900K. Was extremely happy about it, admired it...until I dropped it on my carpet floor, pins down. I have touched my grounded case about a minute before i dropped it. Will it receive static damage? And does static damage range into lower performance or is it simply a problem of working/not working?

    Thanks for your consideration.

Black Friday Build | First "low"-budget AMD Build - Bent Pins & All!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:51 AM PST

    Background

So, I am a broke graduate student who really wanted to build a new PC (sold my last one for $), but I still had the GPU.

    • Goal was a good build on a budget.
    • No more than $450-500 & preferably around $50-100 out-of-pocket
      • This is the best I could do.
      • BOA Cash Rewards Credit Card: Spend $500 get $200 cashback. Signed up, paid off, $200 in-coming.
      • Old eGPU: Selling for about $200 - Pending Sale
      • Monitor: Going to downgrade to a different monitor (net $50) - May renege on this.
      • PC Fans taken from HAF XB Evo
      • Windows provided by university
      • Only bad deal IMO was the case ($87); however, friend offered to do the case as a Christmas present as I was going to print a temporary one out of ABS.

    Got the following parts:

    The Build

    • Built the entire PC and I couldn't get any power delivery
    • Confirmed the PSU worked, troubleshooted front-panel headers, and tried running the board bare, nothing.
    • CPU was not seated correctly. Removed it and managed to bend the pins in the process. Stupid, I know.
      • "Fuck, I'm out $165"
      • Managed to bend them all back into place utilizing tweezers and Aeropress coffee filters to line them all up.
      • Bought some Isopropyl & repasted with some thermal paste I had laying around
      • CPU re-installed, board turns on.
    • Finished the build, some wire management is still needed, but after way too long working on it, I'll get to that later.
    • VR games have been super smooth and I am just now realizing how much I missed a dedicated desktop.
      • First AMD experience and minus the pins, its been great.

    Case Notes

    • Case quality is phenomenal. Love the case.
      • Running 3 fans in the front (intake) and one in the back (exhaust)
      • Clearance is spot on. Card is massive at 313MM and just fits with the fans.
        • Would be a non-issue if I removed the fans
      • Very easy to build in.

At long last, after months of research, half a dozen threads on this sub about parts and troubleshooting, and a ton of time spent on r/buildapcsales, I have finally completed my first pc build. There will be a small gallery at the bottom of images of the setup/build. If you don't care to read my huge ramblings, just go look at the pictures lol.

I'd like to give a very special shoutout to u/desuemery, who's been an unbelievable help to me in making decisions on what parts to buy and has broadened my knowledge on PC building in general. He's a great guy who loves to help people learn how to choose parts, build, and generally become more adept with regards to PCs in general. Also thanks for explaining how to take apart a PSU to install an RGB fan, I probably will never do that but it's good to know.

In addition, another big shoutout to u/korearicebox, who saw my troubleshooting thread and was on regularly with me for hours trying to help me figure out what was wrong with my motherboard (which ended in just realizing that the manual had the wrong dimm slots listed for installation). Next time I'm just going to by a 4 piece ram kit so I don't have to worry about that bullshit. Even at that, you were a huge help on what started as a frustrating night that turned triumphant. It's hard to believe it happened 3 weeks ago.

So, parts. Why did I choose the 9600k? I primarily game, ESPECIALLY cs:go, which is a game that's hugely dependent on clock speeds. I personally had a debate between Ryzen for futureproofing, but I realized I'm seemingly unlikely to not have desire to build another system in a few years. In the summer I was considering buying a pre-built, and in a few short months I became a hopeless tech nerd. The mobo came in a combo with the CPU during the last week of October and has been very good so far (outside of the aforementioned mishap with the ram).

Personally, looks were a very big deal for me when it came to this build. If I was going to build a high end system, I wanted it to look the part. This almost entirely explains my choice of the PC-O11 Dynamic, which is a GORGEOUS case. In addition to the large glass panels, I get the privilege of putting my power supply in the rear and not having a shroud in the front of the case. This was a huge plus for me. Add in some HD120 fans and light strips, and I found myself a gorgeous system. Every time I'm not playing a game actively I just want to stare at my own work. Due to the case choice, a 360mm rad was a must (any other size rad looks silly in this case). I'm glad I did, as this system is doing 5.1 without even breaking a sweat. 55 max during gaming at 5.1 is pretty amazing, especially without any intake besides the radiator itself.

The graphics card is the upper echelon of mid-range graphics cards right now, which is exactly what I wanted. I got it used, but it was almost new in packaging and runs like it's brand new as well. 3200Mhz Ram is probably more than this system needs, but it's pretty and I got it on sale so don't judge me. Once I see another sale on this RAM, I'm likely to buy 2 more and have a 32GB system. I do wish I had gotten an EX920 NVMe instead of the 900, especially considering the 920 went on sale for the same as I got the 900 for a week later, but I won't cry over it. I promise.

Peripherals are a bit more interesting. A 32" 1440p 144hz monitor is a godsent, but it's a little weird because I often run it in 4:3 stretched. See, I play cs in 4:3 but I don't like minimizing to alt-tab and play in windowed borderless, but I can't do that on 16:9 native...yeah you see the point. I have display settings pinned on my bottom bar so I can change them back and forth. The 4k monitor was used, but super cheap. One of the main complaints was poor quality control, so buying used is a plus since I can check the quality control before I confirm the purchase. I do need to get a new stand, as the lower tiered stand is going to drive me nuts.

2 Different keyboards are connected. Weird, I know. Personally, I love blue switches for typing, but love red switches for gaming. The Patriot Viper v770 is a VERY underrated high-ish end keyboard. Most people don't like Kalih switches, but I actually prefer the newer ones to Cherry MX. The Rosewill keyboard had been a desire for me ever since I saw it, and it is absolutely GORGEOUS and doesn't disappoint. The font on the keycaps is a little off-putting (still not as bad as corsair), but the feel is incredible. I have used the Corsair M65 Pro for months and really enjoyed it, the sniper button actually makes a perfect push-to-talk button in game.

Finally, the Z623's fucking PUMP and I'm honestly scared to push them with my EQ for fear of people the next 3 houses over being able to hear the bass. Wish this was sarcastic. One thing to note with them; You need to turn the bass knob down for, say, watching youtube because otherwise small bass artifacts will overpower voices and sound you want to hear. This isn't a bad problem to have, however.

    /end rant.

For those of you who are scared of building a new PC...I'm a US Army reservist with the common sense of a dead squirrel. The Army should be easy for me, but it's not simply because I don't have the common sense to consistently execute basic tasks at times. With that being said, building the system itself was NOT THAT HARD. Don't ever be scared to attempt to build a new PC. If you have questions, just ask! After what this community has given me, I plan on giving back and would be more than glad to help you.

And now, as promised, a small gallery of my PC gaming setup. Sorry you have to see my vape juices and other vape-related crap everywhere! And yes, I will be fixing the stand of the 4k monitor. Shit is driving me crazy too lol.

If you read this far, THANK YOU!

How do I install the heatsink backplate of a ASUS B450m-a and a Ryzen Wraith Cooler?

Can GPU sag threaten the life span of my gear?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:50 PM PST

Hello! I recently finished my build which includes a GTX 1070Ti ROG strix and a M360 motar Mobo. I have noticed that there is a sag on the right side of gpu, this of course being caused by the massive size of the card. My main question was if this sag has any potential to damage my GPU' s PCB (or general life span) or my mobo's PCI-E slot. The mobo has a metal finish around the PCI-E slot and supposedly supports any damage to the PCB but regardless. Thanks for any replies!

Can't OC RAM without disabling turbo boost of Ryzen 2600x

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:57 PM PST

I've been at it for hours now via BIOS and Ryzen Master trying to get my RAM sticks from 2666 to 3000. It works just fine, the problem is that turbo boost ( 3.6 - 4.2 GHz) gets disabled somehow and I end up with a constant 3.6GHz CPU.

The exact same problem happens if I try OCing the CPU itself to e.g. 3.8GHz - turbo disappears and I get constant 3.8GHz.

    Is this familiar to anyone?

    Hi

First time PC builder in UK, any advice welcome.

    Total gig about £1258

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Quick PSU question

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:49 PM PST

I'm currently building a PC, I have all the parts except for the CPU and motherboard, they are still shipping. I bought a used 1060 and I want to test it but my current PC doesn't have a pcie 6 pin cable, could I use the psu for my new build to only run the 1060 or will I fry something on the gpu?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:43 AM PST

    Good morning!

I just got myself a nice monitor that has 144hz and Im having a issue with it. I would like to use the 144hz but when I am using the display port I have mouse lag. Where I move the mouse and then it jumps 2 seconds later. I do not have this issue when I use HDMI but I can only go to 120hz.

    PC: Radeon rx480 Drivers: 18.12.1

    Monitor: Msi Optix G24c

    Any help would be appreciated!

[Build ready] First ever build. Half budget half not. I plan to upgrade to Zen 2 in 2019.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:32 PM PST

Hey guys so after a lot of waiting I finally bought all the parts to my budget gaming build. I know some parts are out of proportion in quality to others but I fully intended to make big upgrades in 2019 when Zen 2 comes out. Plus I actually thought I was going to build a lot sooner but I was waiting on the Louqe Ghost S1 case to arrive so I bought some components early, assuming it would arrive at the expected time. Jokes on me I guess but I finally have it. Got the Ghost cuz it looked awesome and I wanted one case that I could use pretty much for the rest of my life (hopefully).

The motherboard I bought used running a 7th Gen CPU should already be have the updated BIOS needed to run the G4560.

Aside from the total lopsidedness of some components do you guys see anything wrong or incompatible with this build? I kind of just want to make sure it actually posts haha. Also I'm thinking of going linux if that matters but I do have a windows 10 key to fall back on.
