Home Networking Wanting to understand shared neighborhood bandwidth

Wanting to understand shared neighborhood bandwidth

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:10 AM PST

(The specific basis for my questions comes after some conversations between neighbors about trying to to have fiber routed to the section that doesn't have it, as the newer homes all have fiber added.)

Most residents are on Spectrum cable for internet and the expectation would be that, since the neighborhood is growing, that as more residents sign up with Spectrum, the collective/shared bandwidth will be affected, making the more expensive fiber option (about double the cost) more desirable.

    • Is this assumption pretty much a given reality or is there a reasonable chance that if say 15 more Spectrum families are added to the neighborhood, the bandwidth/internet speeds would remain largely unchanged?
    • Directly related to the above: Is Spectrum's bandwidth/capacity to a given neighborhood static? something they can increase from their central office? something that would require new equipment at the related ISP node?
    • I've heard that fiber to the home does not share bandwidth with neighbors like Spectrum cable would. While there is sharing taking place if you go far enough up stream (right?), is there any truth to that statement? I recall AT&T DSL telling me a few years ago at my apartment that I wouldn't be sharing bandwidth with neighbors-- is there something different with cable, fiber, DSL in how they allocate what bandwidth each client actually receives?

Hopefully you get the gist of what I am trying to understand. I've done a handful of google searches and read through many of the different articles but there's not a lot of info that I can find regarding the basics of how bandwidth/connectivity works from ISP to Node to Homes.

Happy to read an article or reddit post I missed if you know of one on this subject!

    Thanks

Edit: thank you everyone for the education

Is parabolic antenna safe for persons living at home?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:08 PM PST

I have got a parabolic antenna TL-ANT2424B with following parameters:

    • Frequency Range: 2.4 GHz ~ 2.5 GHz
    • Impedance: 50 Ohm
    • Gain: 24 dBi
    • VSWR: <= 1.5
    • Maximum Input Power: 100W

Members of my household complain that the directional parabolic antenna could impact their health if it would be running every day. Some member of my family has a diseased heart which works in 30% and a second member with epilepsy. Should I be afraid of impact directional parabolic antenna to the health of my family? Is it safe to leave running antenna connected to desktop at night?

New router, now wireshark and nmap won't work

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:54 AM PST

In Wireshark, the router is not listed as a packet source, even though it is connected directly to the router by ethernet. Nmap will fail, saying dnet could not connect to eth0.

These only seemed to happen after the new router was installed. Does anyone know of any configuration setting which can solve this?

Have Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite. Hosting website on LAN. Have A-record on domain pointing to my WAN IP. Have port forwarding set to direct port 80 to my website. People outside my network can see the website. I (from the same LAN) cannot.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:40 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm having an issue with my Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite. What's happening is that it won't let me access a website hosted on another machine on my LAN via domain name.

    Machine running webapp: 192.168.1.9

    My machine: 192.168.1.3

    Domain: mywebapp.domain.com

If I load 192.168.1.9 on Chrome my site works fine. If other people load mywebapp.domain.com it works as well. If I load mywebapp.domain.com it used to show my Edgerouter Lite admin GUI.

I've tried changing the ports the Edgerouter Lite listens on for the web GUI. I've also tried enabling hairpin NAT based on researching this issue on this internet. None of this has worked.

Any help would be great appreciated!

ISP won't allow me to bridge their modem/router. How can I connect my ER-X to it and use its QoS/SQM capabilities?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:13 PM PST

TL;DR: Not possible to bridge the ISP modem/router. I bought an Edgerouter-X that I'd like to use for its QoS capabilities, in hopes that my online gaming experience improves. QoS of the ISP router sucks. How can I connect the ERX to the ISP modem/router and use the QoS of the ERX? Can I connect an AP to the ERX and still benefit from QoS through it?

Hello everyone! So I have this modem/router provided by my ISP. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to set it up as bridge mode, they just don't enable it on their end. The router is a Technicolor CGA0101.

I bought an Edgerouter-X a few days ago and I've been struggling to connect it to the ISP router properly. The only thing I want is the SQM capabilities of the ERX, since I've heard it does wonders for online gaming (using the ISP router to play online with my PS4 is nearly impossible due to latency when my family connects to the network, even if I use ethernet).

I also want to connect an AP to the ERX, and disable the WiFi of the ISP router. That way my family can connect directly to the ERX through said AP.

I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to networking, and I'd really appreciate some help. Just pointing me in the right direction will help a ton. Thanks in advance!

Suggested configuration to create a secure network

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:59 AM PST

We own a small business and our commercial landlord has given us access to his WiFi network for internet access included in our rent. I would like to set up a router or some sort of firewall that will connect to his network for internet access so that we can create a secure network for our devices (1-2 laptops, printers, NAS, phones and tablets).

Any recommendations on hardware that can connect to a wireless network and create a separate and secure wired and wireless network?

Redirecting outbound connections to 8.8.8.8 to another dns?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:51 AM PST

I've got a device that adamantly refuses to use my dns set by my router or any manually added ones and instead call out to 8.8.8.8. Seemingly adding it as a 3rd dns for the device. I've confirmed this by checking for dns leaks, there are none outside this app and blocking that ip breaks the apps functionality, so I assume it refuses to use anything else.

So I'm wondering if there is a way to redirect those calls and trick the app into thinking it's using that dns server when it's actually using one of mine? The router I'm using uses asuswrt merlin so it has some decent functionality. I'm just bit unsure of what I'm looking for.

I had a previous message telling me that it's dnat that I need to investigate, which I have briefly since. But if anyone can help me better grasp the concept I'd appreciate it. For example I'm curious if it would work to trick a program for example into thinking it's communicating with one dns instead of another or if something would break there? Or if there is a reasonable way of setting a pi3 to obfuscate dns calls and perform dnat commands as well as network snooping to track and alert of anything misbehaving etc. I've seen some similar guides that mention some points there but it would be nice to know in working towards something that's actually feasible.

If anyone knows of any useful documentation I could read to look into setting up a pi3 to manage this I'd very much be interested also. Or a good read to get some fundamentals for iptables and routing?

Need to hunt down malware on my home network

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:43 PM PST

Hello everyone, I'm about at my wits end trying to track down something on my network that is executing malicious attacks on an external server.

A few days ago I got a notice from my ISP telling me that I'd been reported for abuse. They sent me a report that looked a bit like this:

    Nov 27 18:43:06 lvps83-169-44-105 sshd[22044]: Invalid user tftpd from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Nov 27 18:43:08 lvps83-169-44-105 sshd[22044]: Failed password for invalid user tftpd from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 44602 ssh2 Nov 27 18:49:22 lvps83-169-44-105 sshd[22306]: Invalid user romano from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Nov 27 18:49:24 lvps83-169-44-105 sshd[22306]: Failed password for invalid user romano from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 36690 ssh2 Nov 27 18:54:09 lvps83-169-44-105 sshd[22496]: Invalid user microvolts from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

So, I scanned all the PCs I have with Malware bytes and kept on going.

Next day, I get a new abuse notification. Same server, same sort of activity. So, I do a fresh format of windows 10 of each PC and reconnect.

Today, I got another report of abuse. Crap. So, I disconnected EVERYTHING from my network except one of the freshly formatted PCs. That sort of leaves me a bit handicapped though.

I've tried using wireshark to search for requests, but they aren't constant, and I'm not sure exactly what to look for. I can infer the ip address of the host but that's it. I have no idea when the attacks will happen.

My router is running openwrt, and I've tried to add a firewall rule to block access to that ip address, but that doesn't seem to be working (I tested with 8.8.4.4, it's still pingable after blocking)

I've got a pi-hole installation running on a raspberry pi, but there don't seem to be any DNS lookups for the hostname being attacked.

So my question is... How do I find out what is attacking them from my network? I've got a few raspberry pi devices connected, various smartphones, two pcs, maybe 3-4 laptops, an ubuntu fileserver, smart devices... my home network is teeming with activity.

If an ethernet cable isn't providing a signal but a different one is, can you assume that it's the cable?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:40 PM PST

I just put an Ethernet cable through my wall and when I plugged it into my PC, I discovered it didn't work. It doesn't work for the initial PC or a second one I tried it on. I tried a different ethernet cable and it worked fine. The only difference between the two cables is one is shielded while the other isn't, and one is a cat6 while the other is a cat5e. I'm pretty confident that it's the cable, but I want to be sure. Is there any way to find out if it is indeed the cable without buying a tester? Is there any signs that it is definitely the cable?

Looking for someone familiar with the Disney Circle <- Got questions

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:33 PM PST

Main issue is that I can get the circle to manage platforms well... an example is that I am trying to disable youtube on my kids roku using the 'kid' profile. however in doing so everything else seems to not work (such as netflix even though that platform is set to allowed).

Only way I can actually get anything to work on the roku is set to it to have no profile (bypass circle).

wondering if i have something miss-configured or whether the circle isnt really compatible with roku.

Also having an issue on my kids pc where it wont authenticate to game clients (steam, origin, battle.net) again when the only filtering turned on is to disable youtube.

seems i can only get this to work by either having it filter everything or nothing.... starting to wonder why i bought this junk.

    Spectrum 1gig internet + USGPRO+ Ubiquiti switch

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:05 PM PST

Quick question I can't find the answer to.

If my ISP is non-fiber, and I have that connected to the USG PRO - then my USG pro to my 48 port switch through Cat6 right now... can I go from the USG pro to the switch using fiber? Any advantages/disadvantages? Mainly trying to open up usable ports in my switch.

    Thanks!

Newly-built house, bit of network confusion.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:27 PM PST

The confusion seems to stem from the fact that there isn't a network, to speak of. During the design phase I was clear that I needed to be able to plug multiple computers in to the RJ45 sockets in various rooms (including the garage). To the point where the electrician questioned why I'd need an RJ45 socket in the garage.

What I seem to have is a wired network which exists solely to split the incoming telephone signal to all the sockets, which allows me to plug the modem or phone in where I like around the house (woo) but doesn't offer any network functionality whatsoever.

This is how the coffret de communication (I'm in France) looks.

It looks like the incoming signal (bottom left, going into the port marked "LINE") is split into 4 twice, with each of the 4 outputs of those splitters going to what I assume are RJ11 > RJ45 adapters and then into the Cat6 and on to the RJ45 sockets around the house.

My idea is to identify which RJ45 socket the modem is plugged in to, isolate it, and then get the remaining Cat6 cables to an 8-port unmanaged switch (a D-Link DGS-108) which I'll hopefully stash in that space after removing the metal block in the middle (it looks like I can just pull the RJ11 > RJ45 adapter right out and have it there independently of that mounting bracket) and the TV splitter on the right, which is also wrong (I need 4 independent satellite feeds rather than 1 feed split 4 ways but I can't blame them for that because it never crossed my mind to mention it).

After all of that I'll have 1 RJ45 socket solely for the modem to plug into (I'm never going to move it), the phone will come out of the modem and I'll bring a cable from another RJ45 socket to the back of the modem to provide internet access to the remaining RJ45 sockets around the house, which will all be connected via the switch. Having it like this would also allow me to have my DD-WRT router (Cisco E4200-v1) between the modem and the network to handle DHCP and the like.

Does this sound feasible? It looks like there are alternative coffrets available but I can't see one which includes the metal bracket bit in the middle so I guess that part is either old/discontinued or third party. Also, I would bet that I couldn't buy just the updated networky-bit in the middle, without having to buy the whole thing. Here's an installation video of what looks like exactly what I wanted...

What are the best practices for assigning static IPs within my LAN?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:58 AM PST

I just finished setting up my first NAS (via FreeNAS) and I realized I had just been using DHCP to assign all of the various IPs it was using (main server + IP aliases for the jails). I checked and my router uses the 192.168.0.1XX range for DHCP assignment.

Should I be using the 192.168.0.0XX range? The 192.168.0.2XX range? Something else?

Help with Port Forwarding on Sagemcom Fast 5260 and VPN

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:51 AM PST

I recently setup a VPN through PrivateInternetAccess.

I've been trying to forward my TCP/UDP port on my Spectrum provided Sagemcom Fast 5260 router.

    Nothing seems to work.

Does Spectum block it from working since I am using a VPN? Or do I need to buy a custom router that actually work?

    Thank you!

Random Connection Drops - Dual Wan (2 ISP) Setup, Possibly DHCP Related

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:44 PM PST

Hi everyone! First time posting here, and while I did read the rules carefully, please forgive me if I make any mistakes in that regard.

So basically I have two internet providers (Spectrum and AT&T, 400/20 & 100/20, respectively). I'm running each connection into a dual wan router (no wireless on this router) and have it setup to failover to the AT&T connection in the event the Spectrum connection fails. My main desktop and my wife's computer both connect directly to the dual wan router via ethernet. Another ethernet connection connects the dual wan router to a wireless router (so that the WiFi throughout the home is also prepared for failover). Phones, TV, etc all connect to that WiFi network but my wife and I are direct to the dual wan router (bypassing the wireless router all together).

I didn't really do much configuring outside of the WLAN settings on the wireless router and choosing which WAN connection for primary and backup in the dual wan router's firmware. I'll randomly have my internet drop out and I'm not sure why. On my PC it usually doesn't even last long enough for the wired connection icon to have the yellow triangle pop up over it or anything, but my chat program from work will log me out and back in, work VPN will have to reconnect, etc. Never had this problem prior to this setup.

My television, which is on the WiFi, is much worse. Sometimes as often as every 10 minutes I'll receive a message from DirecTV NOW that my network conditions are degrading the video stream and I'll have to reopen the app to get TV going again. Does the same thing with Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Not 100% sure what's causing it but maybe one of the devices needs to have DHCP disabled? Maybe I need to enable bridge mode? Doesn't really make sense to me cause I don't know why I'd get the problems on my desktop since it's directly connected to the dual WAN router but who knows. Thanks for any help, equipment model numbers below.

    Spectrum Cable Modem: Ubee E31U2V1

    AT&T Modem: Arris BGW210

    Dual WAN Router: Cisco RV042G

    Wireless Router: Arris AC3200 (SBR-AC3200P)

TP-Link Archer C8 or Nighthawk R7000 or Mesh

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:23 AM PST

Hi all, I am stupid when it comes to networking and I was hoping someone could give me a little advice. I am upgrading my router (EA6500) mostly due to range. I live in a small house but on the back porch the Wi-Fi is terrible. I bought the Archer C8 for super cheap from a resale shop last week and it is running well. I just saw that they now have the Nighthawk R7000 for $13 more. My questions are:

    1. Is it worth returning the Archer C8 and picking up the Nighthawk?

    2. Would the nighthawk give me a noticeable range increase?

    3. I can get the Samsung Mesh Wifi 3-pack for $100. Should I just jump into Mesh network now?

getting ethernet wall outlets to work

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:50 PM PST

Hi all, I just moved in to a house that has ethernet plugs on the wall outlets but it looks like I need to do some work to get them running. I found a box in the wall (that looks like this: home network) that has all the connections, but from what I've researched so far it looks like these are 110 connections rather than the rj45 that are needed. All I want is to plug my router in to the wall downstairs and have it connect to a computer upstairs, so I don't want to go through the hassle of completely re-terminating everything. Is there a quick and dirty way that I can get that one connection working, like splicing wires from one room to another until I get a connection? Will splicing wires together cause a poor internet connection?

    Thanks

    ISP speed test info

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:14 PM PST

I am trying to figure out the best way to test my internet speed. If I use the site that my ISP provides I get 800+ Mbps (speeds are supposed to be 1Gbps). If I use other sites such as speakeasy or speedtest I only get around 150 Mbps. I have heard that sites the ISPs provide are usually throttled so they can show the best numbers, but when I am seeing such a HUGE difference compared to other sites, I am starting to wonder if I am really getting the speeds I am paying for.

Does anyone have any input on this?

    Need help with home network

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:01 AM PST

Okay, I'm a super beginner at this and just started getting interested on improving my situation today. My house is using the stock modem/router that our cable company provides: the Arris TG862g.

The house is 2 stories with thick concrete walls, so the connection is not very good once you get further away from the router. The problem is that the router is located at the very front corner of the house, making the back area of the second floor have literally no connection.

First of all, should I purchase a better router and see if it makes a difference, I feel that the one we currently have is not very good. Second, is our best bet to try to wire a cable through the walls and make an Access Point? Or would a mesh network work better?

    Upgrade to Professional Access Point/Router/Switches

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:56 PM PST

Hi guys, hoping for your input.

I have 30+ wifi light switches, a number of wired HD cameras running on PoE, TVs, a home automation Raspberry Pi and 15 other wireless devices in my house.

I have 2 switches in my basement that and hard wired then to my Asus wireless router on the main floor.

I find myself having to reset my router and switches once or twice a week because of slow connectivity or because an entire switch stops sending data. I am tired of this problem.

I want proper robust networking gear. I'm tired of consumer crap.

Can someone recommend the best access point, router and switches to me? Whatever you think might work well for me.

Even if you don't know the exact models, a brand or product line would be a great start.

I'll answer any questions you have that might help you help me! Thanks everyone!!

Old dog struggling with Win10 and no workgroups

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:00 AM PST

So I'm a long time computer enthusiast and in 98,ME and XP days I used to have this down to a science and could do all my file sharing needs in my sleep, with my hands tied being someone else's back. Ever since the latest windows 10 update, I've struggled and bassically only do networking at home. I ending up messing around and after enabling all my drives and permissions to be shared it doesn't work, and then a couple hours later just seems to start working. But I feel like I should have this down to a 5 minute process to add a new computer to the network. Many YouTube videos are old and don't apply to the current Windows 10. Same with different articles and guides on the internet, that's why I'm posting here.

Is there some new best practices I can follow? I swear every drive and all permissions are enabled for sharing along with network discovery. I even still have workgroup set to workgroup, though my understanding is that stuff doesn't matter. Any help would be appreciated.

"man nmap" - is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.".

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:01 AM PST

    Hello,

I was playing OverTheWire - Bandit.I was at level 16 in which I needed to scan ports from this range : 31000-32000 and submit a password to the correct port. All was going good, I used this command : nmap -Pn -A localhost -p 31000-32000.The command worked, and now the last thing to do was to submit the password to the right port.I wrote this :

echo "the password" | nc -v localhost "the port"

I got an error that said something like this : eecho is not an existed commnad , and I though I just wrote "echo" wrong. When I wanted to try again no command was working I tried : exit , reset , logoff , So i just shut down the cmd (and yes , it was run by administrator).I opened cmd again and the first thing I typed was "man nmap" just to take another look, and to be sure that the command was complete , but i got the error in the title , I tried "man ssh" and I got the same result.

I know how to fix had something to do whit Environment Variables , but I want an explication on why this thing occurred.

Help with ethernet on my T3200

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:04 PM PST

Hello I just found this reddit and I figured it would be better to come here for help on this than to call TDS cuz their customer support is shit.

Anyway on to the point. I play Xbox a lot and I mean A LOT. But whenever I stop playing and shut off my Xbox after awhile the ethernet port that my Xbox is pluged into shuts off and I have no way of turning it back on without resetting my internet(unplugging it and plugging it back in).

Is there some way that I can get the connection to turn back on after it shuts off without resetting it?

    Thank you

How to set up home network

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:18 PM PST

Currently I'm using an older plan with bright house network where I am using their echo service in order to have the WiFi signal cover my entire house. Recently a representative from spectrum (the new company that bought out bright house) told me if I were to switch to their cheaper plan I wouldn't be able to keep the echo system set up and would have to resort going back to a single router. Is there any way around this where I could by my own router to create a new acsses point to extend the signal or am I sol?
