This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

My PC build has taken over my life // Don't buy from Amazon

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:43 AM PST

This story is long, and it's not over yet. It may well be frustrating to read all the stupid mistakes I made if you're much more experienced at this stuff than I am (I've actually trimmed most of the mistakes/things I tried out because they were boring and stupid). And I know this isn't really what people post in this sub so do remove if necessary. But I just needed to share it with some people who might understand

The tale so far starts and ends with Amazon.

    Prologue

I got my first PC as an 18th birthday present in 2011. It was a Dell, and it was big and chunky, and I was very happy with it. My Older Brother picked it out, and my parents paid for it.

That first PC got me through university and a few years after that, but last year it started slowing down a LOT. It took so long to boot that I had to turn it on before dinner, and by the time I'd finished eating it MIGHT be ready to go.

After weeks and months of just putting up with it, I made the decision: I would build a new computer. How hard could it be?

    Part 1: Amazon

I was pretty poor as a student and got into some very frugal habits. These days I have a lot more money, but the frugal habits have served me well. I always spend weeks researching big purchases, and then another couple weeks making sure I'm happy with my decision. In the end I pick the 'fair' row of components on logicalincrements, whack them all into amazon, and make my order! Date: 7th September

Almost immediately, amazon cancels my order and disables my account for suspicious activity.

Ok, so I had just moved house so from their point of view I was suddenly making a £570 purchase to a new address. I'm pretty annoyed, but it's objectively kinda shady. I have to update my address with the bank first, then get a statement, and then send it to amazon. It takes a while, but whatever, I send them the stuff. And I wait.

    And wait.

After a week I start calling them and sending them emails. Did you know that if Amazon disables your account, their 'account specialists' will only ever reply with the same generic email to EVERY query you make? They also don't have a direct email or phone line, and the customer service people aren't allowed to talk to them.

    Fuck it.

I set up a new amazon account with a new card and place my order again and it works fine. Thank god. Date: 14th September

    Part 2: First Build

My parts take a while to arrive, understandably, but now that the process is underway I'm pretty excited. When the last package arrives, I'm ready to start my build.

As I say, I had never built a computer before, but I wasn't completely naive to the process. My Dad was one of those early-adopters back in the 80s, tinkering with commodore 64s in the basement. Not many people my age had a computer in the house since birth. I remember my Older Brother starting a build on his bedroom floor when he was a teenager and I was just a little kid. He told me off for trying to touch the parts without touching the radiator first. But he let me sit and watch him work.

So yeah I hadn't built a computer before, but I figured I could do this.

I load up some youtube videos and follow them step-by-step. I read all my manuals, and I touch the radiator all the damn time. It takes me 2 or 3 hours, but in an evening I have everything put beautifully into place. The time had come. I press the on button.

    Nothing.

    No lights, no beeps, nothing.

I frantically check that the PSU and wall socket were on. They were. Nothing.

My ability to troubleshoot is pretty limited at this point. I ask Older Brother for advice, and he tells me to check for loose cables I hadn't plugged in, and a few basic things. But I had followed every step, I knew there weren't any loose cables!

Luckily he was due to visit me in two weeks anyway, so he said he'd take a look then.

    Part 3: Older Brother

Older Brother came to visit and he checks out my build. He says it's perfect. He tries everything he knew how to do and nothing works. He tries my new PSU on my old PC and it works fine, so it's definitely not a power issue. Diagnosis: Dead motherboard.

I sign up for Amazon Prime and order a replacement motherboard to come the next day. No way in hell was I gonna let him leave without fixing my computer. This shit was harder than I thought!

The new motherboard comes and Older Brother does this build for me. He puts it together just like I did and... dead again??

We check the Amazon reviews and there are a few complaining that their motherboards were DOA. One other review claimed to have two dead motherboards! Lightning certainly does strike twice sometimes, right?

We decide to try a different make/model. This one would take a few weeks to arrive, and Older Brother has to go home.. He tells me it will be ok: Lightning may strike twice, but it never strikes three times! And anyway my build the first time was perfect, it was only the faulty components that were the problem. I can handle this.

    Part 4: Computer Guy

The third motherboard arrives. Date: 6th November.

This had been going on for 2 months and I was starting to get pretty tired of the whole thing. This whole time I hadn't had a working PC at all and was relying purely on my phone. And you know you can do a lot with a phone but you can't play Hollow Knight on the damn thing. Basically, I was pretty over it. So I decide I would try JUST the motherboard, and if it didn't work I would take it to a professional.

I take the motherboard out the box, put in the CPU, heatsink, power, and nothing else. Try it. Nothing. Fuck it.

Google tells me there is a well-rated and highly-reviewed Computer Guy in town. I look up his business address and it seems to be a residential home. Maybe I'm wacky, but that makes me trust him more. So I phone him up, he says yeah bring it in.

Computer guy is a retired policeman. He helps me get the chassis and box of parts out the car. He has a beautiful saltwater aquarium in his living room, and he talks the talk so I figure he's legit. He'll call me tomorrow. Cool.

Tomorrow comes, and he calls me: "You must be the unluckiest person in the world! It's DEFINITELY the motherboard!"

He talks me through what he's done but I'm hardly listening at this point. A third dead motherboard? Is this real life? I pick it up from him and order the fourth goddamn motherboard

    Part 5: The fourth motherboard

The fourth motherboard arrives pretty quickly. I can hardly bring myself to care. I set it on top of the new chassis, on the coffee table. Every evening I go home and the box is sitting there. The chassis yawns empty. I need to test it.

    But I can't.

Because while it stays in the box it MIGHT work. There's a future in which I take it out of the box, plug it in, and everything works fine. But there seem be to many more futures in which I plug it in and nothing happens. Another inexplicably dead motherboard. I am loathe to collapse these possibilities. Am I going crazy? Did I miss something? Did I break them every time by building in a carpeted room? Should I have bought an anti-static strap after all? Was it DEFINITELY the motherboard? But Computer Guy told me it was. He tested my PSU and everything.

Evening after evening I sit in the chair in the corner of my room, and avoid looking at the computer. I hold my phone as close to my face as possible to block it from view. I whine to everyone I know about my computer troubles. It's all getting a bit pathetic.

(During this time, Amazon randomly reinstates my original account. Date: 16th November)

Finally, one night, I am complaining at my mother about not having a working computer. She says to me: "You really can't live without a computer, huh?". "No," I tell her, "I can live without a computer just fine. What I can't live with is the ISSUE of the computer." At this point I really feel like throwing the whole lot in a skip. But then my Dad chimes in "Why don't you build it now. I've got the evening off, we can do it together".

My family lives on the opposite side of the country to me. None of them could nip round and help me physically. And my dad hasn't actually built any computers since the 90s so wasn't that much use knowledge-wise anyway. But it turns out someone just BEING there was all I needed.

With my dad on the line, I plug in the mobo. I can't tell you how scared I am to flick that on switch. But I do. And the damn thing LIGHTS UP. I could cry.

We go slowly, piece by piece. CPU in - works. RAM in - works. GPU in - works. Heatsink in - DEAD.

Really? The heatsink? I try again and again, obsessively taking it on and off. I don't think I have ever sworn at Dad as much in my life as I did during that phone call. I begin to realise that I had never tried a motherboard without installing the CPU and heatsink first. I feel really stupid about that - all those motherboards were probably fine. But that feeling is overshadowed by joy - we have the answer, at last! But I don't know how to solve it.

    Part 6: Computer Shop

This story is getting long and I can only apologise. But it's nearly over. I took the computer along to the shop this very morning.

The shop was on one of the back alleys behind the high street. I'd never seen it before, but a friend told me to check it out after I was complaining to her about my endless issues. I figure it would be faster to just go to a shop than back to Computer Guy.

I haul everything over in the pouring rain, and explain my issues. I tell him I'll buy a new heatsink if I have to, but I'd rather make this one work if I can. Shop Guy listens, and says he'll check it out.. He starts trying things out, again piece by piece and talks me through it. And guess what, when he puts the CPU in it doesn't work.

He takes the CPU out and looks closely at it and reckons there's a subtly bent pin that could be the source of the issue. Just for me, he tries the heatsink without the CPU. It works fine. It was never the heatsink.

Final diagnosis: Dead CPU. Date: 29th November

    Epilogue: Hello Zepp

So I go home and ring up Amazon. By this time the 30 day return period has expired, but with a relatively painless phone call they authorise my return. I start digging through the pile of boxes, manuals, and little bags of screws and zipties that has taken up a whole corner of my room for months now. I was afraid to throw anything away until the build worked, in case I needed to return something or consult a manual.

I dig out the box the CPU came in. There are a couple papers in there - I remember glancing at them before. They looked like an order description. I take them out now, and open them.

It's a report on my CPU. From a computer shop on the other side of the country. From MONTHS ago.

"CPU is faulty. Advise customer to return to Amazon".

I read it over and over. I feel like I'm in the ending of SAW. The key was in the room with me the whole time.

    I start laughing

    --

If anyone read all of that, thank you! Writing it out has been cathartic. And yes it's all true - I really did find that paper at the end.

I ordered a new CPU from a different website five minutes ago. Pray for me.

EDIT: There are a couple comments saying 'why does he blame amazon' that I just wanted to respond to

The title 'Don't buy from amazon' isn't really meant to be serious advice. I just thought it made a neat moral from a narrative standpoint because the story really did start and end with amazon-related issues. And I certainly don't blame amazon for all the problems I had. There were some issues with the service they provided, but my own mistakes/lack of experience played the biggest part, compounded by two people who I viewed as much more experienced than me (Older Brother and Computer Guy) BOTH saying it was the motherboard, so I never even thought to suspect the CPU

I was however somewhat shocked (and genuinely confused!) that I received a known faulty item from them and wrote this post fresh off the back of that discovery which probably coloured the tone. I know that was almost certainly a simple mistake made by an overworked amazon employee.

Trust me, I prefer to blame amazon for their genuinely morally questionable treatment of workers and tax evasion, not for my PC problems!

I’d forgotten how it feels to be excited

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:16 PM PST

I have a lot of anxiety problems, and on top of that I had the worst summer of my life with my dad eventually passing due to cancer, which left me kinda dead inside for the rest of the year. Came across a small windfall of money thanks to not having to pay for college insurance as an online student, and elected to use it to make myself a damn good rig. And I'm excited. REALLY excited. It's all I've been thinking about for the last week or so as parts begin trickling in. It's been a long time since I've been actually looking forward to the next day. I don't think I realized how empty or scared I was feeling until I actually laid down in bed and couldn't wait to get up tomorrow and receive the last pieces. I missed this feeling. I guess I'll see if it lasts.

I just built my first pc, here’s what I learned.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 06:49 AM PST

I just wanted to make a short post for anyone who is thinking about building a PC for the first time. Prior to yesterday I had never built a PC before and always had doubts about it. I'm not very mechanically inclined when it comes to installing things so this always made me skeptical.

IT IS VERY EASY DON'T WORRY!

I was absolutely amazed how easy it was to build my PC after watching a weeks worth of YouTube videos and reading everything under the sun online. Do your research. When I was first picking parts out I was so skeptical and worried but the more and more research I did made me feel more comfortable over time.

Get an anti static wrist band. If it's your first time, it's only $6 bucks and can prevent a rookie mistake. Safe than sorry.

Also get a ratcheting magnetic screw driver, you'll thank yourself later for this.

Go slow, it took me about 4 hours to build the PC physically and then another 2 hours to troubleshoot why windows wouldn't install. I had ordered the preloaded usb from Microsoft and the usb was so cheap and was faulty. I installed windows onto my own usb and had 0 issues.

What parts to NOT buy secondhand?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:15 AM PST

What parts should you stay clear from? This is either through Kijiji/Craigslist/Ebay/etc that just involves individual sellers, not refurbished stuff from manufacturers

Trying to save someone from buying an iMac, help!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:40 AM PST

gf is about to spend £1049 on an iMac with the following specs-

    • 2.3GHz Processor
    • 1TB Storage
    • 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
    • Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    • 8GB 2133MHz memory, configurable to 16GB
    • 1TB hard drive1
    • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
    • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports
    • 1920x1080 sRGB display

Is it possible to build a pretty-looking, form-factor desktop PC for a couple hundred quid cheaper? (including all the peripherals)

Or maybe even purchase a pre-built one for the convenience?

The only thing she says she likes about the iMac is the fact that it's so 'sleek-looking' and she's very comfortable with that eco-system.

I don't want her to spend all that money when she will only use it for word-processing and youtube at the most! Especially when I have experience building my own rig.

I built a PC this past Summer and tomorrow I'm helping my friend build his first PC ever.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:10 PM PST

My friend is completely new to the computer scene. I helped him pick out everything and has zero clue how to put it all together. I'm so much more nervous building a PC this time around because it's not mine. He isn't the richest guy in the world and has saved up for such a long time. I'm really scared that I'll fuck something up and cause him to have to spend more money. It's a fairly simple build. No SLI. No water cooling or AIO, but I'm still really scared. I plan to help him enough so that he is confident enough to build a pc later in life.

    Any tips?

    First-time gaming PC build

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:04 PM PST

Hi, I'm currently working on building my first PC. My budget is $1000-$1200 (trying to keep it on the lower end). I plan on using this as a gaming PC, but it's my first one, I don't need it to be the best of the best. This will be an upgrade from what I had before, nonetheless, and I'd like to be able to upgrade parts in the future. I'd just like to get some input about the parts, anything I might've missed, any suggestions on better choices of components. I'm opting for an SSD because I don't have a crazy amount of files, and I have an external drive for that. I don't really like to mess with HDDs. I added the HP 250GB SSD because that one is currently on sale ($40), but I may not go with that specific one, I'm open to suggestions on a better cost-effective secondary SSD. (buying this in the USA) Thanks, I appreciate any help! I'm really excited about this process.

The subreddit wiki suggests the 1080 as a minimum and I've read a few other comments saying that it may not reach 144fps in some games... My questions are:

    • Is it powerful enough to get a reasonably good fps? I don't mind a compromise - lowering some settings and not always hitting 144fps, but I don't want low quality graphics AND bad fps. How well do you guys think this setup would realistically fare on games such as BFV and Assassin's Creed Odyssey?

    • Is there anything worth changing? If there's any way to save some money without losing much/any performance, or gain a lot with little cost, that would be great. I wouldn't like to go too far over this price as it's already quite high for me, so a 1080Ti for example would be too expensive.

    • I've read a few reviews saying the 1080 runs quite hot, especially when overclocked. Should I try liquid cooling or will the fan be okay? How about upgrading the fan and/or adding more?

Thanks for taking the time to read all this, any advice is greatly appreciated!

Edit: I have another identical SSD already, so there would be the two SSDs and one HDD, for a total of 1.5TB.

Help needed. Putting my build together.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:32 PM PST

Trying to put this EVO 212 Cooler on. When I put it on AM4 board I dont use the included plate with the green sticker on it correct? I use the stock mobo backplate and the black LONG standoffs not the short silver ones included that have the notch on the threads? I got it on, like an idiot realized i put the cooler up and down not front to back, so i pulled it off. Lmfao. Also is the cooler supposed to be a tiny bit loose on top of the cpu? Mine has tiny play.

[Build Help] Thinking about building my first PC

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:11 PM PST

I've wanted to build a desktop PC for a while now. I am a total noob to building a PC, though I've watched a lot tutorials on YouTube and read through guides online. I also put together a parts list on PCpartpicker.

I primarily want to use the PC for gaming-- I want to play games like Fortnite (never played, please don't judge but I want to play with my little brother) and Minecraft, as well as less demanding games like Stardew Valley. I currently use a MacBook Air for gaming and it kinda sucks. I hate how my computer overheats even when browsing the web. That said, I'm not looking for over-the-top performance. I just want something that gets the job done, with a solid 1080p resolution and 50-60fps. My budget is roughly $1400-1500 (USD) max for the whole build-- this includes peripherals like the wrists rests as well as necessary items like a tool kit. My parts list goes a little over my budget, so if there's any way to be more cost effective while still getting my needs met, please let me know.

Also, I'm interested in building my own mechanical keyboard, so I chose a customizable keyboard kit from pcgamingrace.com.

I still have to save up for these parts, so I don't plan on building the PC any time soon. Would you guys mind taking a look at my preliminary design? Is there anything I'm missing? PCpartchecker says all the parts are compatible.

    [Question] Part Prices

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:17 AM PST

Hey, I'm pretty much good to go on my PC build, I was just wondering when a good time to checkout would be. Am I wrong too assume Christmas time has bumped up prices? Does anyone know when they will go down? I'm not in a massive rush to order all my parts, but if anyone knows when the inflation drops alittle bit, much appreciated. (btw I know RAM and GPU's are forever lost to budget gamers but I mean the other parts^)

Can't decide if I should continue upgrading prebuilt, or get a new case and start over.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:38 PM PST

I have an i7-6700 with a Z170. It was a dell prebuilt with 8gb ram and 1tb hdd.

I purchased 16gbs (2x8) of corsair vengeance LPX and a new psu, as well as a new 1TB ssd and a GPU (msi radeon rx 580) thinking I'd just upgrade the old system. Now I'm having second thoughts. Should I just get a new case and strip the cpu/board off the old case and build a new one? That's all I'm really missing from a new build, aren't I?

Your guidance and expertise would be greatly appreciated guys. I hardly know what I'm doing here. Thank you.

    Would it be worth it to get a 1080p 240hz monitor for a 1070ti or should I get a 1440p with 144hz?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:24 PM PST

I'm worried that I wouldn't be able to even reach 144 FPS with a 1070ti

    [Build Ready] 1440p 144hz Mini-ITX Build Feedback

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:17 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, streaming, programming, maybe video/photo editing, maybe VR. Mainly play League of Legends, Overwatch, Starcraft 2, Fortnite which this build is overkill for right? I want to get into AAA games (RTX 2080 comes with BFV). Most of the purchased stuff is refundable so if it's really bad for this build, I can always return it. The purchased prices are final prices inclusive of taxes, shipping, discounts, etc. Currently no plans to upgrade build afterwards. Haven't looked much into overclocking.

Asus b450-i or x470-i? I'm thinking Asus for the quality and Aura Sync with RAM and Wraith Cooler. It seems like x470 is better for overclocking, SLI, and the future AMD CPUs? I'm not interested in SLI and upgrading CPU and unknown about overclocking. Is the b450 better for me?

I was considering the H200 case, but people report that ATX PSU blocks the PSU shroud and chokes the GPU. Also, Neo Mini case looks pretty cool.

Would appreciate any thoughts on any part of the build!

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1440p, 144Hz, high-max settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1900-$2000 ballpark including monitor

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA, no Microcenter or Fry's nearby.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Upgrading my pre-built for VR

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:10 PM PST

Last year I bought a prebuild for around 900 bucks it's pretty small case with a 1050 and an i5-7400. It's this one.

PC works fine, runs almost anything at acceptable levels but now I have saved a bit of money and I wanted to upgrade it if possible in order to do VR. I already need to plan 600€($680) for the Vive. I need a bigger PSU which will probably be another 100 bucks or so. The GPU needs an upgrade obviously but I checked around an the prices are fucking outrageous. Looked at prices of 1080/1080ti and was like wtf. Went ahead checked 1070ti and even that runs like $500+. So already I figured I need minimum $1300 just to upgrade my PC to not even highend, and that is if I can keep all the other garbage like processor, case, ram, mainboard.. something here seems off or I am researching it wrongly.

Should/can I even upgrade my PC or should I just start from scratch? I know some basics about putting it together but not much, I usually broke the CPU fans last time I tried or connected the wrong fans to the wrong things. Any help appreciated.
